Simply the best tacos we had when visiting Puerto Vallarta. This is a real authentic local taco place and was a stop on our local foodie tour. Skip the eggs and pancakes, come to Birreria Robles for breakfast. By breakfast, I mean Mexican breakfast, which means birria. They serve the birria 3 ways: regular tacos on soft corn tortillas, tacos doradas which are fried, and a bowl of birria with tortillas on the side. The goat birria was tender, savory, and not gamey at all. Tia in the back knows what she's doing. My favorite was the tacos dorados con todo, con consomme. Wash it down with a glass of their agua fresca de maracuya and it's a breakfast of champions. No frills, prompt service, great food. This was one of the best taco we had in our visit to downtown PV in our taco tour. Our guide explained to us that it is a breakfast taco so has a high probability of selling out if you go early afternoon. You can get either braised beef or goat in a crispy fried tortilla. There are pickled onions and salsa to dress the taco which was delicious. Also you can get a dipping broth to dip your tacos in. It was very unique and delicious and nothing like I've had in the state side. They have weird hours so we tried to go again on our second trip out to downtown PV and it was closed which made us extremely sad. They have birria. Birria tacos. Omfg. I had these birria tacos yesterday and my friends and I are still dreaming about it. Birria is a stewed meat, typically beef but traditionally goat, cooked in a broth of chili peppers, onions, garlic, bay leaves and the meats own fat for hours on end. Sometimes oregano and other dried spices are added to the broth and allowed to bloom for as long as the broth simmers. Typically hours. Most of the time birria is served with rice and beans and tortillas in a bowl, kind of a pho of sorts, with cilantro and onions added to the broth. Anyway.... So they take this meat and put in on a crisp tortilla. Not just any tortilla, but one that has used the slightly spicy fat rendered from the broth and then pan fried for extra texture. Top this puppy off with cilantro raw onion and a bit of lemon and you have yourself a masterpiece. This Taco, my friends, is effing good. Oh, and the booth is crowded and sells out. People buy this birria a La carte cuz it's believed to help and cure most hangovers. And as added testimony it cured one in my group. Try one of these if you're in the area. Opens early and apparently sells out fast, sometimes before closing at 3pm. My suggestion is: goat birria, cilantro, onion, lemon, medium hot sauce (the sauces are ok the counter in order of spiciness) and dig in. Oh and don't be worried about the plates being covered in a plastic baggy, it's typical of street vendors in the area. read more

The woman who is preparing tacos has obviously been there forever because there is a photo of her when she was a young woman, alongside her young husband, who I believe has passed. The family owns multiple restaurants, and this is the only one where the founder (Grandma) at 90 years old still works. They usually sell out by 1 or 1:30 so I recommend coming early. Very tasty tacos dorados with absolutely delicious, slow-cooked beef filling. Judging by the crowds of locals around the stand this morning at 11 it is very popular. Pickled onions with habanero were a fantastic addition to the tacos and helped to balance the richness of the beef and fried shell. Apparently the family raises their own cattle and goats and their restaurants represent generations of experience in perfecting the art of the taco. read more
