We saw this little taco stand on Patti's Mexican Cuisine (Public TV channel) and she states it has the best Birria style tacos - that's all they do so they do it very well. They offer quesadillas, hard shell crispy tacos, and semi hard shell and soft tacosl . The meat is absolutely delicious - one bite of the meat and you can tell that it is slow cooked for a long time. You can eat sitting on the wall across the street or you can ask for it to go and they pack it up for you including all of the condiments. If you want birria sauce to dunk your tacos in you'll have to ask for it and they will pack that to go also. Don't pay attention to the taco wagon look - the food is pretty darn good! It is located up the street 4 or so blocks from the main thoroughfare. If you turn up the street towards the hill side Bodeguita del Medio you will find his truck. The first time, we sat on the wall across the street and ate but the second time we asked for it to go and took it down to the seawall to enjoy the food with the water view. That's the best way to enjoy your tacos. There is also a small area that has maybe 3 tables in back of the truck where you can sit and enjoy. Great tacos/Birria!

Some of the best tacos ive ever had. Super tucked away on a corner and if you weren't paying attention you'd miss out on something amazing.

Alex, his wife, and their sons! They are SO warm and friendly!

My boyfriend and I decided to walk down to Tacos de Birria and we were NOT disappointed!!! First of all, they are the nicest people and Alex immediately greeted us with a smile and we had a plate of tacos instantaneously. He knows what he's doing - his tacos are absolutely to die for and they're so inexpensive and so delicious. I loved talking to Alex - he's been serving tacos in this exact spot for 27 years! If you go, make sure to leave a yelp review so we can get these wonderful people more business!

Tucked away on the corner of Matamoros and Allende, in the shadows of early morning sun, an unassuming taco stand dishes out daily doses of what many believe to be the best Birria in Puerto Vallarta. There are two schools of Birria, which is basically a stew of meat cooked with dried chiles...one is the beef school, and the other is goat. Both are absolutely take-your-breath-away delicious. A celebratory dish hailing from Jalisco, it is typically served in the morning with tortillas and and broth, garnished with whatever veggies are in season. This dish has a magical flavor common to slow cooked dishes. Some say it even cures hangovers. The birria Alex prepares daily is made of Beef, and since 1992, "pata saladas" have touted him as the undisputed king of Birria de Res here in Puerto Vallarta. I enjoyed two tacos, one soft and the other "durado," with all of the fixings. They were heaping with tender, juicy meat and garnished with mountains of fresh cabbage and diced onions. After topping the massive tacos with a few of the fresh salsas, I was off to the races, but not until I enjoyed a Caldo served steaming hot, the perfect addition to an already heavy breakfast. Tacos Birria de Alex...it will get you off on the right foot in the morning. Go eat there. You'll be glad you did.

Wonderful birria tacos. Tried both the fried shells and soft shells. The were equally delicious. Good selection of condiments and salsas.

There are places that simply serve food--and then there are places that become part of your story…read more Pepe's Tacos is exactly that for me. Having come here since I was 10 years old, this iconic taquería isn't just a local favorite--it's a timeless institution that continues to define what truly exceptional tacos should be. Since 1987, Pepe's has built a reputation that extends far beyond Puerto Vallarta, and one visit is all it takes to understand why. The star of the show--their legendary tacos al pastor--is nothing short of extraordinary. The pork is expertly marinated and cooked to perfection, resulting in meat that is incredibly juicy, tender, and bursting with deep, savory flavor. Each slice is carved with precision and layered onto warm tortillas, creating a perfect foundation for what comes next. What truly elevates these tacos is the balance of toppings. The sweetness of the pineapple and the sharpness of the fresh onions cut through the richness of the meat beautifully, enhancing every bite with contrast and complexity. It's a masterclass in simplicity done right--every ingredient playing its role to perfection. Beyond the food, the experience itself is just as memorable. The service is impressively fast and efficient, especially considering how popular this spot is, and there's an undeniable energy in the air that makes it feel alive at all hours. It's the kind of place you can count on for a late-night bite, where the atmosphere is casual, vibrant, and always welcoming. Pepe's Tacos isn't about reinvention or trend--it's about consistency, tradition, and delivering excellence time and time again. Decades later, it still holds its place as one of the best taco spots in Puerto Vallarta, and for good reason. Some things never change--and when they're this good, they absolutely shouldn't.

Out front, the trompo spins over charcoal fire, hand turned, on display to the street. The man at the blade is a performer, part craftsman, part showman. He hones his knife between razor thin shavings of al pastor, then in a reflexive flourish nips the pineapple crowning the meat, sending a sliver flying only to catch it with a tortilla. It is theater, but it is also instinct. Inside, the crowd looks like the United Nations. A tour group from India next to a Dutch family with half a dozen kids in tow, the Canadians eye the Americans with deserved suspicion, and a few locals whose plates are piled high while tourists settle for modest portions. It is the natural order of things, and nobody complains. The charcoal scent in the meat makes clear this is al pastor's intended preparation. I have never had the pleasure of eating from a coal fired trompo before, and it is instantly apparent that this is the way it was meant to be. Someday, somehow, I will rig one of these up, because I need this in my life. Pepe's is not just a taco shop. It is a master class in tradition, theater, and flavor, with a dining room that feels like the world gathered around one spit.

It's thicker, more cheesy than what I've ever had before and very delicious. We paired that with the prime rib tacos, it was a plate stacked with meat and 4 tortillas under it, more than we could eat. The seasoning was great, it was diced so small that it was easy to eat. I got a virgin strawberry margarita, the wife got a coke. It was very affordable.

We ordered the ribeye, al pastor, and chorizo tacos. The ribeye had so much fat that we had to pick through it just to eat it. The al pastor was very average - I've had much better at plenty of other taco spots. The biggest disappointment was the chorizo. It wasn't traditional chorizo at all; it looked and tasted more like chopped-up hot dogs. We barely touched it because it wasn't what we ordered expecting, and it just wasn't good. The presentation also wasn't appealing. The meat was simply piled on top of two tortillas, making everything messy and difficult to eat. They were also pretty stingy with the grilled jalapeños. The salsas didn't do the food any favors either. None of them really stood out, and the green guacamole salsa actually tasted like it had gone bad, so we stopped eating it. Service was attentive, but almost too attentive. Staff kept coming by every few minutes to ask if we were finished or if we needed anything. While I appreciate good service, it made us feel like we were being rushed through our meal instead of being able to enjoy it at our own pace. Overall, I don't understand the high ratings based on our experience. With so many amazing taco spots in Puerto Vallarta, this one didn't come close to meeting the hype. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.

Chips and three salsas come gratis. The pineapple habanero was a little hot for my tastebuds, but it had good flavor. The chipotle salsa was appropriately smoky and might've been my favorite. The green was more mild and fresh and also very good. I ordered three tacos: grilled shrimp, grilled fish, and the hibiscus flower and panela cheese. The waitress let me try a piece of the cheese before ordering since I'd never had panela before which I appreciated. That taco was probably my least favorite of the three- texture, not taste, but I like to try new things, so I'm glad I got it. There was a toppings bar for taco add-ons: limes, cucumbers, cabbage, onions, and cilantro. Nice to be able to customize. Very reasonable cost, good flavor, good service, good atmosphere.

Had to walk for a while to find a working ATM. Started with the guacamole which was good (although we'd had way better in the afternoon from a little cafe near our hotel). They have outdoor seating, so it's fun to people watch. Service was unmemorable.
