Surprisingly cool shit...for a hardware store. But, I wasn't here for home improvement necessities. I was here because I saw a gigantic "we sell Timbuk2 bags" poster in the window. Medium-sized selection of messenger bags, backpacks, wallets, & those plastic flexerito thingys (timbuk2 enthusiasts, you feel me on this, right?) I picked up a "catapult"-- a small messenger bag-type that you sling across your back as you ride your bike. Seeing as how I don't messenger & I don't bike, this well-padded accessory will be used to hold my iPhone, lipstick, wallet, & tiny moleskin notebook. (It'll be our little secret, but I'm considering wearing it to the side like a fanny pack; it didn't look completely ridiculous...I think...) There are two ways to approach Tags: 1. Directly, with a concrete, headstrong understanding of what quarter-inch nails you need, how many keys you want cut, the size of your curtain rods, the price you'd like to pay for a new toilet seat, and an anticipated shopping time of ten minutes. 2. Indirectly, letting the spirit of the place--mecca of all things handy--languidly guide you for hours. Ooh, I could totally USE a hook there! Ooh, a little squealing pig keychain with an LCD light! Garlic presses! Lemonade pitchers! Cheap plastic shelving! Maybe it IS time I TOTALLY REORGANIZED EVERYTHING I OWN. If you're lucky, neither of these approaches will bring you into excessive contact with the generally under- or over-age, entirely lame staff, with the exception of the reaction I get whenever I flash my Harvard ID card to snag the 10% student discount. Harvard, of course, gives the same ID whether you were accepted for a PhD in philosophy, or, like me, TA'd a single entry-level course. So my girlfriend and I recently painted my apartment, and did the ol' "zipcar to home depot" run to get all our painting supplies. But as we all know, you never get enough painting supplies. Like, get this. Our house doesn't seem to have a hose in the back, which I guess is alright. I lived in an apartment building for so long, that I should be counting my lucky stars that now I live in an actual "house" rather than lamenting about the lack of a hose. So without a hose, I didn't really have a sweet way to clean off a bunch of paint off brushes and rollers. Because I ain't puttin that shit in the bathtub. No way. A weekend run to the Shaw's in Porter Square (see my review for more details) reminded me that, hey, Tags is like, right there. I always kinda forget that it's there, much like I also glaze over the Burlington Coat Factory outlet that's right there. Dunno why, I think it's got something to do with the fact that I hate grocery shopping, so when I'm in the area, my main goal is to get the hell out of there ASAP. Not sit around and wax thoughtfully about how cool the hardware store is. So when I went into Tags to get more brushes, I was actually kind of impressed with the huge selection of stuff they had. Yeah, the top floor has your typical appliances and whatnot, but for the boy in your life, whether it's you or someone you love, who wants to do a little handiwork, the basement is where its at. They got screws and paint and all sorts of stuff down there. Also, the staff was extremely helpful and approachable the three times I had to go in there to get more painting supplies. Tags is an incredibly awesome addition to the Porter Square strip mall where you can pretty much find anything from a christmas tree to a lightbulb, a battery to a hose, to a knife set. They have it all. Whether you're trying to upgrade your kitchen with new tools and cooking utensils, or trying to get a copy of your keys made, or maybe you're looking for a humidifier, they'll be there to help. They have it all and their customer service is top notch. This place has saved me while I was in the bind when I urgently needed a cake pan, and another time when I needed a couple of lightbulbs. It saved me from having to drive further, to Home Depot and having to navigate a mile's worth of aisles to find what I needed. Instead this spacious but not overly big, two floor store, is well organized and full staffed. Honestly, whether you're in a pinch of browsing, this place is simply terrific. It's like they're punishing me. Punishing me for my shoes. I'm Filipino.. I blame Imelda. So earlier this week, my plastic back-of-the-door shoe rack broke. It's supposed to hold 36 pairs of shoes but clearly FAILED. Hey.. flip flops and flats shouldn't count! They're like.. HALF shoes. Anyway.. I came here to find 2 suitable options for a good amount of shoes (not including those weird fabric shoe racks). Yowsa! Expensive! Well.. it depends on your definition of expensive.. but I can find shoe racks $10+ cheaper at Bed Bath and Beyond. That seems wrong somehow. I've had issues here a few times.. with their register having malfunctions and whatnot. But that could just be my luck considering the good reviews. Whenever my mom is in town she likes going here because there's some sort of dish racky thing that she couldn't find at the Bed Bath and Beyond at home. Go figure. This isn't a hardcore hardware store like other reviews have stated. But are there many of those in MA? I mean.. check out Economy Hardware. A decently stocked hardware store that nonetheless has a few kinks in its garden hose. The top level of Tags is more of a HomeGoods type place, with pepper mills, bric-a-brac, brass clocks, earthenware crocks, picture frames and all manner of other knick-knackery. OK as far as it goes, but I need a bunch of washers, a friction wrench and some CLR. Downstairs we go. A more typical den of home improvementery, the downstairs hardware warren is tightly laid out and well stocked, though they seem to be out of just what I need every time I go there. (Though this is a very personal reflection, it's happened enough times that I feel it warrants a mention). My only real complaint is that on the bottom floor, unlike the top, they do not seem to have associates in any great supply eager to help you. I stood on the floor for fifteen minutes, while not one, but two staff members alertly helped an attractive woman with a totally banal plumbing question (which ended up being a more extensive plumbing lesson) while I stood there with my thumbs in my nose waiting to ask whether they had any more CLR in stock. (They were out of it on the shelf). I mean, I get that not every day a hot chick comes into your store, but that's no reason to duplicate the opening scene of Extract. This isn't a one-off, either. On several occasions I've been ignored by multiple staff members before I finally found one willing to help me out. Anyway, they'll probably have what you need, and they'll probably help you find it. Just don't be in a hurry. Pro tip: Try going in on a Saturday morning, and avoid the 5:30-7:30 pm M-F time slot - everyone and their hipster cousin is going there after they get off the T. read more

Tag's is really convenient. So great to be able to run in when you are doing other shopping like CVS, etc. Their items are more expensive but I would gladly pay more to avoid going to the big box stores. What are we talking, a dollar? 50 cents? I have found a few little household items to be better quality than the big stores too. My only gripe is how unfriendly the cashiers are on the first floor. Do they hire them like that, because they are all the same. One thing though - I googled Tag's to look for a bike lock and the Ace Hardware website pulled up loads of gun cabinets. Yuck. I can't think of any reason to give this store less than 5 stars. I have to totally disgree with prior reviews that have called this store expensive; I hit several hardware stores yesterday and found them to be the cheapest (in many cases, only by $1, but comparable/slightly lower prices is a far cry in my mind from expensive.) I was also very pleased with the quality of items here and the selection. I wanted to buy a lot of things that I didn't need just because they were attractive and appeared to be well-put-together. I came here looking for shelving, and instead found an awesome cart that works way better for me than shelving but I had never seen anywhere else. I also found three other items that I needed and felt to be reasonably priced (which turned out to be validated by shopping at other stores later in the day), received help from a staff member who was courteous and knowledgeable, and was impressed by the actual *hardware* selection downstairs. A lot of 'city' hardware stores have to sacrifice a certain type of product for space considerations, but Tags Ace Hardware had a respectable selection of actual hardware *and* housewares. I'm torn about this place - I see so many great reviews, but haven't been thrilled anytime I've been here. Recently I've noticed they have many ppl helping you find things (they say it's not Home Depot, but I can never find anything in this place). It certainly is not cheap & if you're on foot/T, it's convenient, but the whole camb/porter area & specifically this plaza is a nightmare traffic-wise during the day. 2.5 stars. PS One specific point of irritation for me is the common hardware items (as this IS a hardware store), you have to walk through all the housewares & college dorm items to then go downstairs (& all the way in the back to get keys made)... the layout is confusing @ best... It's EXPENSIVE!! It is a nice, clean store. They don't have the usual urban layer of filth over all the merchandise, but to say that they are there for the student...( they offer a 10% discount for all students with ID)...well, they are INSANE. This is an upscale hardware store. I was desperate for string to tie boxes up for recycling, and spent almost $4.00 for a small ball of it. I know if I went to the neighborhood dustbin near me I could have gotten it for cheap, but since I was already at that mall running errands... you get the picture. The store sells LeCruset, Wustoff, and other upscale kitchen items. It's a nice alternative to Williams Sonoma, but prices are about the same as at other upscale kitchen stores. read more

They should really just change their name to "Tags Ace Hardware + Kitchen Gadgets + Storage Solutions + Bathroom Necessities + Paint + Cleaning Supplies + Great Service" Okay, so maybe that's a little impractical. In any event, their name really doesn't capture the store in its entirety. They really have a great selection of kitchenware, including stoneware bakeware, candles, OXO products, kitchen electronics and all kinds of neat stuff for bathroom. Does that sound like "hardware?" I didn't think so. They keep all that fun stuff on the basement level, along with paint and paint supplies! I cannot say enough about the service! Every time I go in there, someone wants to help me, is super polite and if they cannot answer my question, they find someone who can! And with the quickness! Since it's a smaller store they don't always have what I need (which is to be expected), so I guess I have to keep going to Home Depot. Since I don't have a car, this place is great because it's along the Red Line. It's also close enough for me to walk to. My roommate was just lamenting that this place is too expensive, as i've seen most of the reviews have already mentioned. I agree, but for us pedestrian/ bicyclists, we don't have too many choices. The fact that it's at least locally-owned makes it easier to enjoy my shopping experience. They also have the same label that's used in the Container Store, which I can't remember at the moment, that has cute and useful storage for closets. read more

I'm with Roberto: 2.5 stars. This is NOT a hardware store, it's a home/dorm goods store with a few nails and cans of paint. Maybe we went on an off-day, but the staff was not actually knowledgeable about real hardware store stuff. My boyfriend is a hobbyist watchmaker (insert Siler jokes here) and needed a small can of butane to "blue screws." This is a process by which you make screws blue. I'm not joking. Anyway, he went into Tags to get this item - which, I should say, is available at most grocery stores. But when he finally found the actual hardware store first they didn't know what he was talking about, then told him, "oh no, we don't carry cans of compressed gas." Uh...giant tanks for barbecue grills? cans of air? spray paint? check. Tags is overpriced, but well-located next to the grocery store; I guess it's like a convenience store for lawn chairs. I've shopped here in the past and been satisfied with the service I've received, but this policy is bizarre and unreasonable, especially if you want to test the paint color in more than one room in your house (and aren't yet ready to purchase an entire quart.) Oh, how I'm conflicted. Your experience at Tags depends entirely on what you need and who you need to interact with. If you're looking for something housewares-y, you'll probably find it, but pay 20% more than you want to. Everything on the upper level is shiny, colorful, and targeted toward the yuppie/student without a car, left with no better options. Downstairs is a different domain. There you'll find your paint, your cleaning supplies, your garden tools, your light fixtures. If you need anything more hardcore than that, you might be out of luck. Take, for example, the time I wanted to rewire my lamp, and needed wire and solder. The guy who cut my wire must have had only one day on the job (funny how often it feels that way at Tags), and didn't know what solder was. Really? You work in a hardware store and have never heard of solder? A kindly, older employee showed me where the plumbing solder was located, but electrical solder was nowhere to be found. Ah well. The upside to this place is their fasteners. Really. They have those big bins of loose fasteners and findings and washers and lug nuts and all that, and they're never out of stock because no one ever goes in the place looking for that sort of thing. Sad to say, aside from the convenience, that's the best I have to say about Tags. Go to Masse's or Dickson Bro's. read more

I've gone here for years and had great experiences with their product selection and customer service. Their staff is very knowledgeable, and they're quite friendly and eager to help. This is far and away my favorite hardware store in the state, and being an artist and an art teacher, I spend a LOT of time in hardware stores looking for materials. Today I had especially outstanding customer service from Zaidi in the electrical department. I went in with a rather unusual DIY lighting project and he spent an hour problem-solving with me until it worked perfectly. He was willing to test things out over and over again, and there's simply no way I could have completed the project without his help. He has 25 years of experience as an electrician, and his expertise made this project possible. You can't beat this store. They even allow you to bring in your dog! read more

I'm probably the last person who should be impressed by a hardware store, let alone enjoy shopping in one, but this place is awesome, especially the first floor. Maybe that's because the first floor is actually more akin to Bed Bath and Beyond than a hardware store. They carry really nice (though sometimes pricey) housewares: cookware, kitchen utensils, bathroom stuff, home storage, and dishes. More traditional hardware-store fare is downstairs. I always find what I'm looking for here (and often end up leaving with 1-2 things I didn't plan to buy). The staff are extremely helpful--almost a bit much at times. You are guaranteed to have at least one person ask you if you need help while you are shopping here. Ordinarily I don't like being barraged by salespeople, but the people that work here are so gosh darn nice that I don't mind. They seem genuinely interested in helping out, and when you actually do need help with something they're extremely knowledgeable. Bonus: they have a student discount! read more

I don't think this Ace Hardware store is really so qualitatively different from other Ace Hardware stores I've been to. It's certainly a higher-end Ace. But it's very much of a piece with the Ace brand in general. In fact, I don't think I've ever been to an Ace that didn't have housewares, kitchenware, and bath accessories. What's the biggest standout for me is the fact that this is the best hardware store in the general vicinity. The employees are helpful and knowledgable. The cashiers are nice. The clerks are nice. I don't have a car, nor do I want one. When it comes to household items I usually stick to what I can get at CVS, but on occasion I need to get something they don't carry. Tags is very easy to get to by bus or train and it is a quick stop on the way home from work. Things are a touch pricier than Target and the like, but the convenience is worth it. Tags carries all kinds of great things including general hardware, cleaning supplies, basic kitchenware, oilcloth, messenger bags, ball jars, silpat mats, knives, pots and pans, storage and organization items, dishes....oh, and they make keys! This is the best hardware store ever--I'm sure they had hammers and nails and whatever, but I didn't even notice due to all the fun dishware, homegoods, and Le Cruset treats that bombarded me upon entering. We were on a mission for one thing only-- a beautiful Miele Carina vacuum in melon yellow...and they had it, of course, along with a million other models. The staff was super nice and put up with our lingering over prices and general indecisiveness (did i say we were on a mission?) 10 minutes before closing. Their displays are really helpful with lots of comparative info to arm you while deciding on the purchase of major/minor appliances and whatnot. When I walked into this place I was amazed by the products. A mini BedBath&Beyond, in a hardware store? I was promptly greeted and offered assistance. Downstairs? Oh, theres more...I was beginning to wonder if I was indeed in a hardware store. The staff downstairs was just as friendly and helpful. They helped me find what I came in for. Velcro. WOW! $12!!! Thats ridiculous! I noticed the kitchen stuff was on the high side. I just figured since they arent a kitchen store high prices are expected. But hardware? I've never said "Wow, thats expensive" while being in a hardware store... until I came here. I refuse to spend $12 for Velcro or lord knows how much for bulbs. Strange experience at Tags the other day. Went in to get a little rolly cart thing to take my laundry and other crap to the laundromat. Had just been in Shaws buying said laundry crap and saw their rolly carts priced at an outrageous $32 and thought, "Surely I can do better than that at Tags!" Those of you who had been to Tags before are clearly laughing at me right now. Anyway, I go in, they have all the rolly carts up in the front with price lists. I think, oh, that's helpful. And I pick out what I BELIEVE will fit the description of the cart priced at $19.99. Feeling pleased with myself, I go to the register. There is no tag on the cart, but somehow the cashier scans the bottom, and the price shows up: $52! I almost yelled, "what the fuck!?!" But, realizing that would be inappropriate, I just said, (lamely) oh, wow, um...I thought it was less than that. Taking pity on my sad credit card, she gave me a student discount that I'm a little bit too old for. Ah well. So that's the story of how I spent way too much money on a rolly cart, and why I probably won't be back to Tags again for a while. It's a nice enough place (though my hardware needs are few), and the cashier was awesome for giving me a discount, but my roommate was right...everything in there costs about $30 more than you think it will. read more

Tag's rules! I can get just about anything here. From painting supplies and copied keys, to K-cups for my Keurig, to BBQ supplies and kitchenware. The prices are reasonable, the staff is helpful, and the selection is fantastic. ALSO! Students should be aware that they offer a pretty great discount with a student ID. TAGS is way more than a hardware store. It's also a kitchen store, a home-decorating station, an organizing store, and entertainment, all in one! The first time I went in to buy leaf bags, the second time to buy bolts, and the third time, to buy a bundt pan. Pretty broad list. In mean, where else around here can you get a bundt ban? Who would have thought you'd find it in a hardware store. But like I'm saying, it's impressive (and not just a hardware store). The whole top level is actually kitchen (pots and pans, cutting boards, appliances) and home stuff (trash cans, organizers, candles), while the typical hardware store stuff is downstairs. I wish I had known about this place when I first moved in. I can see it being a great resource for new-comers to the area setting up in a new home. As you might expect, it's not the lowest price on everything, but the things they carry are pretty high quality, and they're a great local store. I do think the prices are competitive, though. It's not like you'll find something nearby for significantly less. And as others have mentioned, their service is excellent. They always ask if you need help, and make sure you get it. And today they were giving out popcorn in the front! read more

In a pinch, this place isn't bad. I only stop in if Masse is closed. They have a wider assortment of home decorating things, or cleaning items, and even bakeware on occasion... what type of store are you Tags?! The multiple personality type? Figures. I am usually floored when I get here, wander around for a while not finding what I'm looking for, knowing where it should be in the store, ask the employee, and yet again --- they have everything under the sun that I don't want, and the one thing I NEED is MIA? As far as neighborhood hardware stores go, I'm just glad to have one at all. Tags is local and family owned, so their slightly higher prices are (in my book) well justified. I've never gone in for their housewares or furniture, which is a little too collegiate for me, as I passed that phase of my life about a decade ago, but their downstairs hardware selection isn't bad at all. (I will say that if you need storage containers and don't have the time/gas to drive to a Target or Walmart, Tags also has Rubbermaid and other snap-top plastic storage boxes.) Keep in mind that this is mostly a straight hardware store, not the everything-having-to-do-with-your-house store, like Home Depot or Lowes. You won't really find things like lumber or aluminum flashing here, nor will you find the GIANT selection of tools like Home Depot has. But I like being able to walk down the street if I need a pack of nails or a new bit for my Dremel and knowing that Tags will have it. I'll start by saying that I cannot walk the dogs anywhere near Porter Square without them dragging me into Tags because of the free dog treats and the attention that they get. Kids also have their pick of lollypops or popcorn, or if you are one of my daughters, both. Tags is a neighborhood, family owned place and if that's not enough to get you to go there instead of a bigger hardware store then it should, There are 2 Tags. Upstairs and downstairs and just like the old show on PBS the upstairs is all show and downstairs is all business. Upstairs they have their somewhat over priced kitchen, dining and bathroom stuff. You can find stylish organizers, small appliances, good knives and mid-range cookware as well as a good selection of grills in the summer, dorm stuff in the fall, and holiday stuff for whatever season we're in at the time. Downstairs are the tools, hardware, paint, light bulbs, small garden area, electrical and plumbing needs, etc. The employees are easy to find, very helpful and if they don't have something the will order it for you. You may pay a bit of a premium at Tags, but it's worth it for the service and to keep a good neighbor around. read more

Tags is grossly overpriced - just try to buy a wire shelving rack and you'll end up paying 300% more than at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond - and its service is spotty at best. Upstairs, it seems like employees are always about looking to help you, but downstairs they flee from questioning eye contact like frightened rabbits. If you have a car, head out to Everett. If you don't, get a zip car membership - the amount you'll save on buying what you need at Bed Bath, Home Depot, or Target will by far make up the cost of the rental. read more

Decent. I used it more before I had a car. It is expensive, but you can't beat its distance from the T. I went there today and there was a helpful guy who was directing you as you came in the store, but once I got downstairs to the REAL hardware section, there wasn't any help to be found. I travelled all the way to porter sq. just to go to Tags. The price are..somewhat..expensive but you can't beat the service here..oh don't worry you may find some random things that are ridiculously cheap there. Everyone is very friedly and attentive. They will ask if you need help once you step into the door. Houseware section (upstair): They have everything I was looking for, eventhou they dont, they will take you name and put it in an order for you and will call you when it arrives. I was looking for a sponge holder that you can stick it on you sink and TAGS HAS IT, I had been looking for it for a while and bingo one more point for tags. Hardware section (downstair): It is not only for guys, girls can enjoy it too. They have gardening section that i love (sometimes it is unorganised but that's ok just ask someone and he will help you) and yet again very friendly people working here. I love to fix things around the house myself and never pay to get things fix. For all the girls out there, if you want to fix things yourself and save couple bucks to hire someone, Tags is the place to go to, they will tell you everything of what you need and how to fix it. I have sponken to Mike about the plumbing question and he told me step by step of how to unclogg a sink. The manager, Bob, is even nicer, he is the nicest man in the store, he will go above and beyound to find what you are looking for no matter how long it will takes. Bob is one of the reason I love Tags. (maybe thats why he is a manager). I will definately go back to Tags when I need things fix around the house, it is worth every single pennies to get the service I (and you too) deserve. A bit overpriced and a store this size SHOULD make a restroom available. They have one but they have limited it to employees only apparently. Also their return policy is store credit only. Not cool at all. I have given up on them although more conveniently located. But Home Depot beats them in every way possible. read more
