I know there are teens who go in as a group and take/mess up items on displays. Guess they visited the store on an off day. I have gone out of my way to channel personal buying to local stores for years. Grills, Paint, Random supplies...every time I can buy from Ace in 02129 I do. We send our kids solo to local stores with a budget regularly for errands, Mother's Day, Father's Day, holidays etc to teach them June Bug- awesome Place & Gather- awesome Every restaurant- awesome * we allow him to go to 99 for dinner with friends as we've taught manners and tipping Whole Foods- with a smile So I never thought twice of sending my 14 yr old son down to buy 2 bags of Mulch after I had him plant/transplant a few items from our patio bed (while his mother sat in car on a work call). He was literally stopped at the door as he isn't 18? Not that they won't sell spray paint etc (which I get)...they stopped a teenager from buying mulch? To add salt they wouldn't help her with the bags when she tried to buy after they turned him away. The lesson for our son "never buy where you aren't treated well or respected" Lesson for me.....Home Depot/Amazon for supplies (begrudgingly) and Ricky's in Somerville for plants, rest of local businesses keep up the community vibe read more

There is a lady that may be the manager who is particularly helpful but the whole team is always ready to help or troubleshoot my project of the week. Attempted to make copies of a house key. Nothing high security or fancy, a regular everyday house key. Had to return three times yet they still did not get the keys right. Didn't even fit in the lock. A professional locksmith looked at the keys, and knew right away what the problem was. They were cut on the wrong kind of key blanks! 3 trips later & they couldn't figure out the problem!! However, it is good to have a choice other than Home Depot. read more

I love coming into this Ace Hardware in Charlestown! They are just about the most friendly group of workers I have ever met. They allow dogs to come in, and they always give my pup a treat! This is great because when I am out walking my dog I can run into Ace to grab some things without having to tie up my beloved doggy. My favorite thing they have is their Mrs. Meyers cleaning products! They smell so amazing and they have a huge selection.The past few times I have bought one of these products they gave me a little free sample of soap at the register! While pricey, this place is great. The folks that work here are very helpful and make sure you leave with what you need to get the job done. They make keys, sell Miele vacuums, parts, and accessories. They have a UPS drop off spot and really all the little parts you need for your newly constructed or old world apartment or home. My experience: I called the Charlestown Ace to ask whether they carried a specific $4 mildew spray. The owner and his assistant looked around the store, couldn't find it, and apologized. After we hung up, they looked deeper into their inventory and actually called me back to let me know. When I went to the store later that day, the spray was waiting for me at the front counter. This place is so wonderful. It's an old-fashioned, customer focused, neighborhood hardware store. Let me explain why it's so great, My husband headed to the store without his cell - which I realized after I attempted to reach him to pick up a few more items. I called the store, explained the situation, they found him and helped him get the right paint samples! In times past I've mentioned a few products I was looking for and the next time I came back they were sitting in a front display. This place is so receptive to needs - its wonderful having such a store right in our little community. Only thing left we is someone who can change inter-tubes on strollers in Ctown. Otherwise Charlestown Ace has pretty much everything from Paint to Keys to random plumbing things to Mrs. Myers Products. Also, they are a great community partner which gives to many of the local charities - its businesses like these that help keep a community strong and growing. Thanks Ace! read more

Ace is not the place with the helpful hardware folks. I explained to a fellow that my closet shelf had a broken support and was needing something to bolster it. He gave me an aisle number and dismissed me. First of all, I explained that I really don't know what I needed, and secondly, I do not appear to be or sound like someone who knows hardware or home import movement. I pace the aisle for 15 minutes. The store is empty, btw. After 15 minutes of frustration and no help, I left without purchasing anything. I went to ace looking for customer service and didn't find any. Isn't that what stores like this are supposed to be good at? Will be going to Home Depot up the way from now on. read more

Do yourself a favor and drive the extra half mile to Home Depot. This store is insanely overpriced and not worth it. I recently purchased screws and asked the gentleman helping me if I would be able to return them if they were the wrong size. Sure enough, they were too small and I returned to the store... only to be told I was not allowed to return the original screws. The store has signs all over stating "No Returns on COVID related items" but doesn't say anything about prohibiting returns of screws... especially after a store associate said it was allowed. I was told "we changed our policy". Maybe they should change their signs too. I am local and this store was convenient, but I will never step foot in there again... Home Depot is easy enough and the cost savings alone make it worth it. Definitely do not recommend. read more

This place is great and there rewards program is actually really generous. I get $5 off or 25% off cards 3-4 times a year and go in there for all the things I need that frequently like air filters, tools, keys, light bulbs, batteries, etc. It's awesome. The staff is actually knowledgeable and present unlike big box hardware stores. They can order anything they don't have on the shelf for free so if you can wait a day, you can basically get anything, but frankly I've never had to because they stock a really good supply of the important stuff! read more

What sets this place apart from other Aces, like, say, the grim, sullen, unwelcoming Jamaica Plain Ace, is their ethos of customer service. Friendly accommodating staff and quick thorough service. I was so happy when this place opened! They have anything a typical homeowner would need and more. Wyatt is great and remembers me when I come in (by face, not name) and says hi and asks how the grill we purchased two years ago is doing. Pet and kid friendly this store has made a difference in Charlestown. I can walk somewhere to get knives sharpened, small tools, tub caulk, paint (!!), and so much more. Makes all those little jobs around the house go so much easier and faster. I like to just browse because you never know what you'll find. As the other reviewers have said, everyone that works here is amazingly helpful and friendly, and will go above and beyond to help you solve your problems. For example, I had a huge work project to finish when all of a sudden, I ran out of printer paper. I checked CVS and Johnnie's, and it was sold out everywhere. In a panic, I wandered into ACE and hoped they would have some. Though they didn't carry any, without any hesitation, one of the employees brought back a large stack of copy paper from the printer in the office to give to me. I've had similar experiences every time I've gone in there, with the employees being more than willing to help. A little frustrating when you're in a hurry, but definitely awesome when you're in a pinch. read more

This place is family run, so you can feel better about shopping there compared to home depot in somerville. i have gone in there numerous time to have them cut pieces of particle board. when they could have easily said they can't do it- every time they accomodate my request. sometimes they need to bring out the table saw and it ends up a 15 minute project which leaves the manager (owner) covered in sawdust. All of this for less than 2 dollars. they are always very polite and helpful. read more

I love coming here. I recently moved onto a boat, about a 5 minute walk from this Charlestown location, and like moving into any new space there's so many odds and ends that you need to attend to in order to get yourself situated. I've been back and forth here a lot, they always ask you right away when you walk in the door if they can help you find something, which is great because they sell honestly everything you need when it comes to home improvement or even just day to day living keeping up with your space. One story I have to say is that - I went to them on a pouring rainy day in December to get some paint to spruce up my new place. I bought 4 samples of paint (their samples are pretty decent in size and I've ended up just buying the samples to use but it depends on the size of your project). I bought the samples (they were very honest and helpful when it came to a second opinion regarding color choices), they were put in a cardboard box, I walked back to my home in the pouring rain, and because I live on a boat, and because it was raining, when I lifted the cardboard box to put on my boat the bottom of the box broke open and all of the paint I had just schlept back rolled off the dock and sunk in the ocean. Ugh I couldn't help cry "Nooooooo!!" allowed in my dismay. They were unopened to all the environmentalists out there & I do feel bad - But! When I went back the next day to Ace and told the woman who owns the store what happened, at first, although sympathetic, she told me she couldn't do anything about it which I agreed was understandable. I went next store to CVS as the paint was mixing and when I came back she had changed her mind and gave me all the new paint at no charge! I have to say it's one of those instances where "it's the little things that count" because I had a smile from ear to ear. She honestly made my day - and I'm going there right now for supplies to start a new project! read more

I ordered a grill from ACE online and had it delivered by this store. They called me in advance and I told them it would need to be delivered to my roof and to not fully assemble it. They brought it fully assembled, it did not fit, they scratched up my walls and the grill. In the process they also broke the ignition button. It has been 3+ months and I have yet to receive a replacement button for the grill. Though the store staff was very kind to me - they were not helpful. They told me its my problem to fix and to either contact the corporate office or the manufacturer to order a new piece. Basically, it is extremely inconvenient and I would not recommend getting anything from here that requires delivery or assembly. read more

If you want to buy something from Ace you better make sure it's the right size,color,shape,brand and also that it works properly all before you leave that store and make it official. Today I was told I could not return my purchase still in the package and with the receipt mind you, UNTIL JUNE!. Are you serious do you really think June 1st ACE will be any safer from getting corona virus. This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard nobody told me you cannot return anything until June so let me store this thing I don't need in a safe place for two weeks. The workers are in jeopardy everyday they go to work and they WILL NOT be any safer in June because there will not be a vaccine in two weeks. Whoever came up with June is an idiot I'd rather them say we aren't accepting returns until the state is deemed "normal" or "safe". June haha what a joke of a policy it's the same as unpacking new inventory it's just as dangerous as taking a return. I feel sorry for the workers for having to work for someone who thinks June is gonna be safer to take returns. read more

I have been going to the Ace in Charlestown since it opened earlier this year. I believe in shopping local. We were glad they opened. The owner is very friendly and knoweldgeable and the staff is extrememly helpful, but one employee, a woman, always makes me feel unwelcomed. She stands at the door and follows me around the store watching my every move. One day I went in and she asked if she could help me. I told her what I was looking for and then she followed me to the aisle and watched me. After I found what I wanted, I looked around the store. She continued to follow me through the store, up the aisles. It made me very uncomfortable. I have spoken to others and they say the same thing about her. She follows every move they make too. I don't know if she thinks people are going to steal from the store or what, but if they want people to come in, she needs to give them room to browse. We want to shop there, but we shouldn't be made feel like criminals. Afterall, Home Depot is right down the road. Please be customer friendly, we want to shop here. :-) read more

Employees are extremely friendly and helpful. I was looking for 3 story fire escape ladders to give as Christmas presents. They only had 2 story ladders, but didn't hesitate to special order them for me, without charging any additional fees. I no longer have the need to use HD, as prices are comparable. Couldn't be happier that we once again have a local hardware store in Charlestown. Ace is definitely the place! read more

Love Ace hardware stores and this one is no exception. I love how convenient the parking is, right up to the door. The store has everything one is looking for. I was asked if I needed help finding something right away. Of course I did, a sales person came to rescue. I was looking for screws to put a wooden crate together. With his help I was done in five minutes. But I still went and browsed to see what else they have, which really was a lot! Must go back for their home items next time. read more
