Righty-ho....let me preface this by saying I've never used Yelp, never intended to, and signed up *specifically* for one reason, and that is to write the following review about Heights & Kenchi, Bit of background - grew up in 400-year old boarding school in the UK, and have always, at least in my youth, had bespoke suits......believe me, when you wear a jacket & tie 6 days a week, and morning suit (yep, the ones w tails) on Sunday for five years, it (a) matters, (b) the fact that it matters is quickly forgotten, which results in (c) the realization of the worth of a well made suit, tailored to fit your body's quirk's, and made with exquisite fabric. The irony, of course, is one doesn't usually realize this until on one's own. My determination to forge my own path has left me bereft of some of the finer things I took for granted. 9 years ago, while on a visit home, I raided my father's closet and re-stocked my wardrobe. These 9 years have seen some considerable change in my, well shall we say, profile. I've long despaired of finding a tailor worthy of Saville Row, a true artisan. Thus, these exquisite suits, jackets & coats, from some of Europe's finest marquees have remained largely unworn for the last 5 years. THEN........what used to be a fortune teller's storefront on the ground floor of my apartment building....yes, I live in LES....was taken over by a curiously named company called Heights & Kenchi. I was more than slightly nonplussed at this somewhat incongruous appearance, being between Ave A & Ave B.....sidewalks alternatingly filled with drunk frat kids and sleeping bums. Then as I got to know them, as one does with the fellow occupants of one's building, I thought, what the heck, these jackets are just sitting up there.......so I brought one down....and asked if they could do anything about the jacket's disagreement with, well, my belly. And they told me to come back down a few hours later. Mind you, the operating hours are one of my favourite quirks of this place.....12 noon- 7 pm Wed - Sun, Mon & Tue by appointment only. That says a lot right there. And so a few hours later, I was slipping on a a virgin wool jacket that, for the last 4 years wouldn't even get close (by that I mean 2 inches) to being buttoned, and, it fit perfectly. In 3~4 hours! Kenchi, Charles & Atil are not only delightful folk, they're tailors with exquisite skills, and the eye of an artisan. Take it from an architect, it's all about one's eye and what it tells you. They have since taken a full extra-fine wool suit, and cashmere coat, and worked the same magic on both. I detest dropping names, so I won't. But you can be assured that any of these pieces of apparel would cost somewhere north of mid-five figures....and the chaps downstairs have done the impossible......at least I think 4~5 inches was impossible. Well, crap, I just let on to my physical state of affairs. No matter, I will close my yelp account, as it's served purpose. Come see these guys, they're not cheap.....but after you see their work, you'd expect nothing less. Frankly, for the quality of their work, they're priced quite competitively. I have a very worn out dressing gown (that i like very much and wear every day morning and evening and can not get myself to get rid of because of it's all cotton comfortable, warm and light fabric) with a long stretching tear at the back corresponding roughly to the sitting area that worn out the garment, plus 6 holes spread out over the shoulder line corresponding to the hanging area and the elbows worn out garment also with worn out garment creating holes around the elbow area as well as both worn out garment around the wrist area. I first went to an alteration place nearby asking to have my dressing gown duplicated with a cotton fabric that i brought to the shop. They reply they did not do creation and sent me across the street to find out if Heights+Kenchi would do it and the man suggested me that creation would cost me a certain price and suggested it would cost me far less to alter the dressing gown which he did beautifully. It looked as if the wholes disappeared. I could not believe it because my dressing gown almost look like new in comparison to the look it had before with all the wholes. I don't know how he did it. But Gustavo made a very good work over a very worn out dressing gown and now I can wear it without the shame of it's previous appearance. I am a 6 feet tall woman, and have always found it difficult to find clothes that fit. One day, I discovered Heights and Kenchi by chance in the East Village neighborhood where I work. I went in on a whim, and ordered a long-sleeved white blouse. I had the luxury of picking from exquisite fabrics. After a few weeks, I was told the blouse was finished, and I was so pleased with the fit. Sleeves that came down to my wrists, and a good long fit in the trunk made me feel good about what I was wearing. I even ordered two more blouses, and was equally pleased. I brought a suit in for tailoring and after a brief discussion of suit cuts and styles, Atef walked me though a series of proposed alterations, and how they would affect the overall look and best suit my taste. After reviewing his notes, he gave me a price break down per alteration and I selected which alterations I wanted done. I received a text within 10 days informing me that my suit was ready. Atef is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and I walked out of there with a customized suit. read more

I needed 2 of my suits Brooks Brothers suits tailored. The suits themselves are made from some of the finest material and were in very good condition. However, the Brooks Brothers style is bit dated and baggy - especially the pants. I could not be happier with the outcome, the suits look brand now! In fact, when I picked up my suits I dropped off a pair of my Brooks Brothers dress pants for the same reason above. I came in on Sunday to get a dress with beaded design hemmed and a jumpsuit hemmed. It was about 4pm and they close at 7. I needed it by Thursday but because of the beaded detail on the dress it could only be done by the specialty tailor who is only there on sundays. Seeing that I really needed the dress by Thursday he said he would get it done that day. I left and returned 3 hours later and he hemmed both items immaculately. By far the best tailor I've ever been to! After losing some weight my favorite suit was really baggy and didn't fit well. I brought it into the tailor and he helped me with suggestions on how to fit it best for my body. After four days he called me to come pick it up, and I was very pleased with the way it fit! What a terrific experience! This small store is so well curated with beautiful fabrics fashioned into very attractive shirts and jackets. Very good service too! I just found it while walking down 9th Street. Good addition to the neighborhood, which doesn't have too much in the way of men's clothing and nothing bespoke that I know of. read more
