Have only gone once, so haven't gotten back my alteration results yet, but the tailor was as professional as it gets. I had to get a few buttoned shirts shortened near the waist. Figured it would be simple so in the past I took similar shirts to dry cleaners and they always cut it short! If a shirt's too long, you can still save it by cutting it shorter, but if it's too short it's ruined and there's really nothing you can do. So this time I decided to try a place that is specially for alterations. He took the time to adjust the length half-inch by half-inch until I was fully happy with how it looked. Even though there were other customers waiting, when he's tending to one he stays focused on what he's doing, which I guess was pretty impressive. In the end, he even gave me a 10% discount because I said I heard of him from yelp! Which is great because even before the discount, the price he charged was basically what I paid at dry cleaners in the past ($25 / shirt), but dry cleaners cutting doesn't hold a candle to the service I got at this place. read more

Have had 4 items altered here now, great service and great job on the alterations. They are always super sweet and do tend to remember who I am "Oh the white jacket right?". On my first visit they were apologizing to the guy ahead of me for getting an ink stain on one of his shirts. They assured him they have banned that type of pen from the workplace since the incident and offered him money for the shirt to which he admitted was more than he originally paid for it several years ago. It was a great first impression to see them fessing up to a mistake and doing everything in their power to make things right with the customer. read more

Finishing my reviews from the year! Brought in a new suit in October to AC and was pleasantly surprised at the level of service provided considering the hectic atmosphere. They are quite busy. Here's the cost rundown for the work on the suit: bring in the sides from the shoulder= $65 shortened the sleeves = 45 hem pants = $13 after the yelp discount I was looking at just over $110. I was in a rush when I picked it up and didn't give the work a good look before getting home. There was some sloppy details that needed fixing so I had to make a trip back. I have to note that each time I was there, other customers were there to get issues addressed. I would go back, but check all of their work carefully before leaving! read more

I have taken three items to Alteration Concept and all have required corrections to be made. The first was a bridesmaid dress with an under lining that was hemmed improperly and showed below the hem. The other two items were jeans. The first pair they hemmed with the wrong color thread, even though we specifically discussed the color at the time I brought them in. The other pair of jeans was hemmed half an inch longer than the other. When the work is done properly, the tailoring has been of a good quality. Unfortunately, it has never been done right the first time. I gave them another chance after the dress because they are so nice, but its not worth the annoyance to go back again. UPDATE: The trip to pick up the 2nd pair of jeans was a customer service disaster. First, the hem that was too short the first time was not repaired by the date promised. The manager said he hadn't gotten organized from Saturday when I dropped them off. His next comment was that I must have different sized legs because the pants were properly hemmed. He only bothered to pin one leg when I went in initially. When I complained that I have had to come in twice for every single alteration because of poor management, bad instructions or poor hemming, he said that was typical and many people require several visits for alterations. Essentially he felt that the appropriate response was to blame me for expecting the pants be done properly the first time. I went back with the jeans after the dress fiasco because they were nice and I thought it might be a one time error. Obviously, the poor management and customer service have not made it possible to overlook the problems any longer. I highly encourage others not to go-- it is a much greater hassle than its worth! read more

The alteration did a good job, but not great. The thread color on the button did not match the fabric or button. I went back twice to get the jacket. The first time, I returned about 5 days after the promised date. My blouse and dress were done but not my jacket. The guy use inadequate fabric as an excuse. The seamstress told me the fabric was actually enough for the lining, they were just backed up. The second time I returned, the jacket was still unfinished. The guy eventually hand delivered the jacket in the evening. I wished they would call me to save me the trouble of going there. Good service, but they definitely should work on time management. read more

The first job was slightly complicated - a bridesmaid dress with pleating, boning, etc. And the second was a super rush job so that I could wear my new dress to an event. Both times they did an excellent job making my dresses wearable and the prices were quite reasonable. read more

I read all the reviews and was excited to find my new tailor in the city. I *wanted* to be a repeat customer. On the one hand, they did a great job on a couple of items. However, the service and a couple of the other garments weren't what I would call good. It all left me with a very bad impression. Perhaps I had high expectations, but I thought they were warranted for a place that charges a premium. Be prepared for prices like $65 to adjust blazer sleeves by .5 inch. And then $55 more for a back adjustment. Again, this is fine, if matched with good service and standing by their work. Service: A good tailor takes a look at something and helps make concrete suggestions with your input. This is not that. This place will probably be great if you know *exactly* what you want adjusted. Do not expect anything more than that. The manager will likely reply to this that I was informed about this or that before I agreed to pay, but he didn't get the larger picture I was getting at. A place with premiums should do more than take specific instructions and do them. There should be a dialogue. Anyway, this is one of those places where the manager will debate you with reason rather than understanding that bending over a bit backward the first time with a customer would win loyalty and word of mouth. I have no incentive to write this review except that I wish someone had wrote it before I went. Again, if you have specific adjustments, I'm sure they'll be fine! Just don't go expecting any kind of consultation. read more

Quality tailoring matters. Especially when you're 6'6' with an abnormal body type. I've had bad experiences in the past, but I rolled the dice one last time and took some of my off the rack Brooks Brothers shirts in to Alteration Concept for a fitting. I was a little worried because it wasn't cheap, but they tailored shirts that were way too big in some places and too small in other places, and turned them into custom looking attire. I get compliments on a regular basis and people often ask where I get my shirts. They almost don't believe me when I tell them they are Brooks Brothers shirts that I had tailored. After the first successful trip, I came back with jeans and polo shirts. I know that sounds vein, but trust me on this guys, it makes a big difference when you have clothes that fit you just right. I found Levi's jeans that fit me just right on the upper half of my legs but were slightly loose on the bottom... I took those in and Alteration Concept tapered the bottom half, now I have jeans that fit me perfectly for a total of $85. If you want custom jeans, go ahead, mine look better and I paid less than 1/3 the price. It's worth paying a few extra dollars to get reliable service, especially when you already invested good money on the shirt/jeans/whatever. Do yourself a favor and ditch your current tailor, go to Alteration Concepts instead. read more

I altered a gown that I used as my wedding dress, and was given multiple compliments specifically about the excellent tailoring. They not only did a great job but were very accommodating and held my dress for an extra long time because I didn't have a place to store it. The alterations ended up being on the expensive side because I had a giant hem and needed it to be taken in in a few places, but it was totally worth it. read more

I still bring my items here when I think it's going to be tricky tailoring job and they continue to do good work. However, I'd say at least 50% of the time lately they've been late for the date and time indicated on my receipt, and they don't call to let me know not to stop by that day. It's bad enough to knock off a star, even though they do try to be nice about it. I would still recommend this place, but set a deadline that's earlier than your true deadline and try to remember to call them before going over to pick up something. read more

Sadly, I have to revise my review after a terrible recent experience. I needed a shirt altered for a job interview and called ahead on Monday to make sure they would be able to do it by Wednesday. I dropped it off and the worker assured me the shirt would be done in time. I asked him the price and he said he couldn't tell me because the owner wasn't there, but I had a similar shirt done there before and figured it wouldn't be over $30. When I came to pick it up, they hadn't even started work on it. The seamstress told me to come back in 30 minutes. Then, the owner called me to tell me that it was a "very complicated job" and wouldn't be ready until the next day in the afternoon. He told me that according to them, I had asked for it to be done on Thursday. I went there to talk to him in person and although he was respectful, he did nothing to fix the problem except offer me a 10% discount. Um...10%? Seriously? To put the icing on the cake, he informed me that the alterations would cost $65. I took the shirt back, am borrowing a friend's for the interview, and will not be back. read more

We've been to Alteration Concepts several times. When they actually get around to altering your clothing, it is done well. However, getting to that point is painful. Expect multiple trips, multiple phone calls, and never expect it to be finished on time. You can expect plenty of excuses as to why things are late, wrong, etc. read more

I needed to get my new tuxedo jacket and trousers altered for an upcoming black tie event next week. I went here to drop it off more than three weeks ago because I wanted to get it back in time and second I wanted to have extra time if they screwed it up. Before all of that they had to past my manners tests. Maybe it's the cool tropical colored paint that sets the mood but as soon as you walk down the steps into the studio it feels like you entered an oasis. I liked my last tailor who worked at one of those dry cleaners but her English was poor and she only worked three days a week. Alteration Concepts is the epitome of professionalism. They provide quality service without an attitude. Just good ole fashion what can I do for you and how do you like this, spoken in plain proper English in front of a full length mirror without strangers waiting for their dry cleaning around you. Very quick turnaround, more than happy with the results but what really mattered to me is I had a conversation with the tailor about my style, and how I wanted to look. Every time I felt like my next question was going to push the envelope and his impatience was going to surface I got first class attention. What more can you ask for at a fair price. Oh yeah and I got 10% off for mentioning yelp and was able to pick up some lunch. read more

If I could give it a 2 1/2, I would. Here's why: I dropped off a brand new suit on a Monday. I needed to have the pants hemmed, the sleeves shortened, and the rear of the pants let out a bit. I was greeted by a very friendly woman. In the back, I could see Han (who I had heard great things about), clicking away at his computer. We made eye contact, but that was the extent of my interaction with him. The woman at the desk sized me up and put pins in my suit to mark it for alteration. I said that I needed it to be finished ASAP. She told me that they were exceptionally busy, but that they would have it finished by Thursday. Three days, not too bad. It turned out that I didn't end up needing the suit on Thursday, so I waited to call until Friday. I was told that my suit was ready, and I told them I would be in to pick it up on Saturday. When I arrived on Saturday, the entire place was empty with the exception of one seamstress and a line of three other customers. The seamstress didn't speak English well, but she found my suit and I tried it on. The hemming and sleeves were very well done, but they had not even touched the rear of the trousers, despite telling me that it was finished the day before. While I was trying on the suit, one of the other customers was trying to explain to her that his shirt wasn't finished like they said it was. I spent about 10 minutes trying to explain to her what I needed. I finally got it across, and she fixed it right there, which was nice. When I tried it on for a final time, she came out and made a big show about something, although I couldn't figure it out. She kept saying "Crotch! Crotch!" The other customers and I were perplexed. The pants looked good, and I spent another two minutes convincing her that I was satisfied. After my 10% Yelp discount, I ended up paying $52. Not terrible, but not terribly cheap considering the delays and hassles. My recommendation: Stop selling yourself as "Speed Alterations" (as your sign declares) and making promises you can't keep. You do terrific work, so just be honest about when my suit will be finished and we can all rest a little easier. read more

While they're very nice and they do a great job - I've never once had an item finished by the date/time they guaranteed. Nothing is ever finished on time. I went today to pick up pants I dropped off a week ago and they hadn't even started altering them. They offered to finish and deliver them within an hour. It's now been two hours. I took my finely knit 3.1 Phillip Lim sweater to Alteration Concept after several other highly rated tailors / fabric repair shops told me that the long snag I had running across the chest and arm were unfixable. The folks at Alteration Concept were incredibly pleasant and helpful, but most amazingly, they managed to fixed my sweater!!! The snags are completely gone. Brought four things here for very simple alterations. One coat that needed a button sewn on and one shirt that needed a tiny ribbon button hole repaired. Both came back and I wore the coat and the same button fell off within 2 minutes. Ribbon buttonhole tore when I put the shirt on. What did I pay for?? Extremely shoddy work. read more

Would you believe I went to about 10 places (drycleaner/tailor shops) and none of them had their tailor on site. I finally went to Alteration Concept and they gave me my measurements. I have been bringing my things here since I accidentally happened upon it in 2008 while walking down 17th street and have never been disappointed. It's a tough call on the four stars here, 3.5 would be more accurate -- they are really expert tailors but they're also really expensive. They wanted to charge me $40 for a simple hem on a skirt, which seemed absurd (I ended up taking it to the dry cleaners for $12). The rest of the stuff I needed altered though was rather complicated and they did a great job. There doesn't seem to be a standard set of prices though. Basically the person pinning the alterations takes a look at each piece that needs altering and arbitrarily chooses a price. At the very least they should offer customers a price list so they know what to expect. read more
