He somehow realized that people were missing and left us to go find the others. He gave very little information about the Biobay and most of that was while he wasn't facing us and he was paddling away. A wonderful tour! Our guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. It would be helpful if the website outlined some more specific information regarding what to wear in terms of clothing and shoes and what to bring. I would recommend loose and airy clothing that covers your arms and legs because of the mosquitos. I would suggest using / bringing bug spray (but make sure it is safe for the environment). You won't wear shoes when you're kayaking so sandals or flip flops will work. Bring a small towel. Consider bringing a bag to hold your belongings in the bus while you kayak. read more

As someone who's always lived near a coast, I've heard of bioluminescence, but have never been in the right place at the right time to witness it. Taino Aqua Adventures came highly recommended and the rendezvous was walking distance from our Airbnb in Esperanza. Our guide, Kevin, was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. After briefing everyone on what microorganisms cause the neon glow, why Mosquito Bay is so unique, and other fun facts, he set us loose to explore! The clear bottoms proved to be a major game-changer. As our kayak sliced through the calm water, it was fascinating to observe the water's color changing right below us! I had fun watching fishes dart past, leaving a bright blue streak in their wake. We went the day before a new moon and visibility was excellent, though my efforts to digitally document the moment proved futile; next time, I'll leave the iPhone behind to fully enjoy the magic. But our guide, once we were all in our kayaks, simply took off and left us, the slowest in the group, so far behind that we eventually lost sight of them and had to paddle back alone to the starting place. We did the bioluminescent kayak tour at 9:30 and it was great. I would recommend booking the earlier tour, as the moon is not as high and bright. Also, if you can go on cloudy or non-moon days its better. Anyway, the tour was super chill and relaxed. The road to the landing is supper bumpy and you ride in a small, dingy bus, but it's part of the experience. Once there, you step into your kayak and start paddling into the bay and you will see the bioluminescence right away Basic paddling skills are super helpful if you do not want to be the joke of the group :) We ended up using as tarp to cover our kayaks from the moon, so we can play with the bioluminescence on our hands, clothes, etc - super fun. Only drawback was that after we got back (wet and bitten by bugs) we had to wait for the crew to load up all the kayaks and secure them - That took about 20 mins. While the staff were great and very helpful, the conditions were not good for seeing anything. They admitted this once we were already in the kayaks. It was a lot of money to basically see nothing. We should never have gone out under those conditions. Furthermore, their kayaks are so filthy and scratched that you cannot see anything through them. read more

The bioluminescent bay tour at night is a "must-do" activity on the island of Vieques. The Taino Aqua Adventures tours use a glass-bottom kayak, which is essential to appreciate the dinoflagellates (marine plankton) which give off a bluish-green light at night when agitated in Mosquito Bay. The effect is mesmerizing (almost like seeing a thousand fireflies in the water). I think early residents used to call this a "ghost bay" because when you place your oars or hands in the water while moving at high speed, you'll see an eerie bluish-green glow. If you arrive within 5 days of a new moon (when there's only a tiny crescent shape), the viewing is better. We took the 9pm tour which starts in downtown Esperanza near the El Blok hotel entrance (just across the street). It's a large group (perhaps 20 people) who get assigned to kayaks (2 per person). After a 15-20 minute ride (in which the last 5 minutes are extremely bumpy on a dirt road), you'll arrive at the edge of Mosquito Bay with the soil emitting a sulfuric smell. You then remove your shoes and bags (and place them in a container). The reason for going barefoot is that you'll walk through a very muddy section before entering the kayak. Shoes will get ruined if you bring them. On the kayak tour itself, you'll be amazed by the water - but also will have a chance to enjoy the stars and constellations which your guide will point out. I was not super impressed with our guide - he seemed to be "going through the motions" based on a memorized script, but our bus driver was fun and hilarious (great sense of humor!). Be sure to fill out your waiver form before arriving. If you have young children, make sure they are securely seated and still during the last 5 minutes of the bus ride (which is VERY bumpy). read more

We had a blast seeing the bioluminescent bay with Taino adventures. Our group was just the right size, 7 boats with 14 people, where we could hear our tour guide. Ezekiel was knowledge and funny (gotta follow the Barbie light!) and let us have time to explore the bay on our own. We were given clear instructions on when and where to meet, and the bay was only ~15 minutes shuttle ride from the meet up location. Be aware: the mud surrounding the bay is very smelly so don't wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. However, Taino provided water to wash your feet off with at the end so bringing a towel is helpful but not entirely needed. read more

There was only one guide who paddled at the front of the group and left my parents behind without any care. They are in their late 60s and able-bodied but couldn't keep up with the guide at first, fell behind, and ended up alone in the pitch black night. They never made it to the part with bioluminescence and were unable to navigate without any light. Thank goodness they didn't get into an accident. They did make it back to the bus where the driver apologized and assured us we'd get a refund. At the end of the tour, we heard the tour guide (who was the son of the owner) openly complaining about and insulting my parents for falling behind. In his words it was their fault that they couldn't follow him and "now my dad is mad at me that we have to refund you all." It's been a week and we have not received a refund despite reaching out to the company. Looking through other reviews I see that something similar happened with a parent and their child. Extremely concerned about the total disregard Taino showed for the safety of customers. read more

My husband and I had such a fun, magical time on this tour with Taino Aqua Adventures. Of all the companies to choose from, I went with them because the heritage seems so much invested in Puerto Rico and the indigenous community... and I'm so glad I made this choice! We had beautiful weather with skies clear enough to see constellations. Our 2 hour tour was cut short such that we really only kayaked for about 45 minutes following the short drive to the launch. Our guide appeared somewhat knowledgeable but, after about 20 minutes guiding us, we were left to go and do whatever we wanted. So there was actually no "guiding" at all. We had a great time on our trip to the Bio Bay! It was partly cloudy, and the view of the dinoflagellates was amazing! After a short bus ride, we arrived at the bay, and headed out in completely clear kayaks. Since the kayaks were entirely clear, we had an unbeatable view of the dinoflagellates below, and all around us. Traveling along the bay in a clear kayak made it look like we were traveling at warp speed among the stars. Our guide, Kevin was funny, informative, and added a lot to an unforgettable experience. This was the first activity we did in Vieques on our honeymoon and it did not disappoint! We went on a night where there was hardly a moon which is a must and did the 9:30 trip. We were able to walk to the meeting place from our Airbnb in Esperanza. I was concerned that I didn't have good shoes for the activity but they ended up telling everyone to take them off, you don't need them while kayaking. You will get a little wet though just from kayaking so don't wear anything you're afraid to get dirty. The clear kayaks at Taino are a must so you can see more of the starlike appearance of the water as you go through it as well as the fish below. I can't describe how incredible of an experience this was on a dark night at Mosquito Bay. The water glows brighter than glow sticks and in particles. Our guide, Kevin, was awesome and funny and told us about the culture and science surrounding the bio bay phenomenon. Definitely go with Taino!! read more

This is a must do wile visiting the island of Vieques. My wife and I did the 10:30pm tour and it was amazing. The paddling is not difficult so there's no need to worry if you have never done this type of adventure tour. We had never paddled in our lives. It was easy and very fun. Not only did we see the amazing bioluminescence of the microscopic organisms, we learned everything about how they work and why. And as a bonus our tour guide pointed out the different constellation's that we're visible that night. Extremely unsafe experience- bus driver risked electrocution for all passengers We were extremely disappointed with our experience with Taino Aqua Adventures. During the drive back from the Bio Bay, a loose electrical wire in the back of the transport bus came into contact with a large amount of water stored in the back of the bus. It started sparking and creating loud pops like fireworks. We were all in wet clothes on a metal bus with a wet floor, so the risk of electrical shock was very high, along with the potential for a fire. The couple at the back of the bus alerted the driver, who said "don't worry." We asked the driver to stop the bus but he refused. The sparking continued, and I went to the front of the bus and pleaded to be let off so I could walk back. The driver refused to let me off of the bus, and we had to drive for several more minutes with sparks, loud popping, and screaming from passengers. It was a genuinely terrifying experience. We strongly recommend against Taino Adventures. The Bio Bay itself is a must-see and we highly recommend going with another tour group- it's truly magical! Clear bottom kayaks are absolutely worth it. read more

This might have been my favorite thing we did in our whole time in Puerto Rico. It was so beautiful and magical and our tour guide, Kevin, did an amazing job! He told us that the Taino believed this bay was sacred and was where stars were born, and kayaking over the water and seeing the little bursts of light under a cloudless sky filled with so many stars, I would totally believe it too! He also explained the steps they're taking to protect the bay and the dinoflagellates, and it just makes you want to protect and respect the beauty even more. They were super helpful too, and there was a couple who weren't great at kayaking and they had a guide who stayed with them the whole time and made sure they were ok. It wasn't strenuous at all and I felt super safe. I didn't take any pictures, other than mental ones, so I can't show how amazing it was, but I highly recommend this place! read more

This was a really cool experience. Very little light pollution so you get a great view of the stars above. The bioluminescent bay sparkles below. We did the Taino Mosquito Bay excursion with our 16 year old daughter, and it was amazing! We were lucky, as it was dark for the lunar phase. We couldn't even see the moon, but we could see so many stars! The glow of the dinoflagellates under us and around us was remarkable. The bus ride is pretty rough the last few minutes, and the (10-15 feet) barefoot walk through 6 inches of sulfurous muck to get in and out of the kayaks is pretty disgusting, but worth it! The clear kayaks are key. My daughter couldn't quit looking at the sky, and I couldn't stop looking under us. When larger fish pass by, you can see them flash.
