Starry sky, shot on iPhone 13 Pro Max

As someone who's always lived near a coast, I've heard of bioluminescence, but have never been in the right place at the right time to witness it. Taino Aqua Adventures came highly recommended and the rendezvous was walking distance from our Airbnb in Esperanza. Our guide, Kevin, was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. After briefing everyone on what microorganisms cause the neon glow, why Mosquito Bay is so unique, and other fun facts, he set us loose to explore! The clear bottoms proved to be a major game-changer. As our kayak sliced through the calm water, it was fascinating to observe the water's color changing right below us! I had fun watching fishes dart past, leaving a bright blue streak in their wake. We went the day before a new moon and visibility was excellent, though my efforts to digitally document the moment proved futile; next time, I'll leave the iPhone behind to fully enjoy the magic. Lastly, don't forget to look up - the starry sky was absolutely stunning. The experience felt ethereal, truly a 'you had to be there' moment that words and photos can't illustrate. If you're still reading, this is a sign to start planning your trip to the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world! Pro tip: book on a new moon (or a night with late moonrise) for optimal visibility!

The bioluminescent bay tour at night is a "must-do" activity on the island of Vieques. The Taino Aqua Adventures tours use a glass-bottom kayak, which is essential to appreciate the dinoflagellates (marine plankton) which give off a bluish-green light at night when agitated in Mosquito Bay. The effect is mesmerizing (almost like seeing a thousand fireflies in the water). I think early residents used to call this a "ghost bay" because when you place your oars or hands in the water while moving at high speed, you'll see an eerie bluish-green glow. If you arrive within 5 days of a new moon (when there's only a tiny crescent shape), the viewing is better. We took the 9pm tour which starts in downtown Esperanza near the El Blok hotel entrance (just across the street). It's a large group (perhaps 20 people) who get assigned to kayaks (2 per person). After a 15-20 minute ride (in which the last 5 minutes are extremely bumpy on a dirt road), you'll arrive at the edge of Mosquito Bay with the soil emitting a sulfuric smell. You then remove your shoes and bags (and place them in a container). The reason for going barefoot is that you'll walk through a very muddy section before entering the kayak. Shoes will get ruined if you bring them. On the kayak tour itself, you'll be amazed by the water - but also will have a chance to enjoy the stars and constellations which your guide will point out. I was not super impressed with our guide - he seemed to be "going through the motions" based on a memorized script, but our bus driver was fun and hilarious (great sense of humor!). Be sure to fill out your waiver form before arriving. If you have young children, make sure they are securely seated and still during the last 5 minutes of the bus ride (which is VERY bumpy).

Some roads were unpaved and the ride was bumpy; nevertheless, our driver guided and warned us about the terrain. We then got off and proceeded to the bay. Took off our footwear prior to getting on the kayak that had clear bottom. When you get to the bay and paddle, it can be difficult to hear the guide and understand where he's pointing at. The water in the bay would glow with movement. The guide also talked about some constellations. Overall, this was a very well organized tour. Though it was a nice experience, I was underwhelmed. They do not recommend bringing your cell phones on the kayak and you cannot leave your belongings on the bus. Some bought and brought waterproof clear plastic casing that can be worn/hung on the neck. Bringing the electronic devices is at your own risk; some still did and tried capturing videos/pictures but it was difficult to do so unless you have a nice camera.

BEST THING TO DO IN PUERTO RICO!!!!…read more This is not my first time to Culebra or Culebrita but this is the BEST things to do in Puerto Rico. PERIOD! Let's say I am an avid traveler and planner but this experience was 8 STARS our of 5 stars for me. So off the chart AMAZING! My boyfriend and I wanted to do a date in Culebra but we did not expect this level or service and hospitality. Can not be found anywhere else in Puerto Rico (trust me, I looked & tried). Captain Camillo and first mate Danny was such incredible host that we thought we were on our honeymoon (seriously, tooo romantic). HOW IT WORK: 1. Pre-trip communication was surprisingly detailed and prompt. Will help you with how to get to Culebra. I.E. Ferry tickets. Very accommodating on start time. Camillo gave us great recommendation where I wanted to visit. 2. TRANSPORTATION IS NOT INCLUDED but Camillo went out of his way and picked us up from the airport since we didn't rent a golf-cart so we were very grateful for his kindness. Please don't expect transportation because of this review. 3. Meet up point was in a central area. Easy to find. Right next to the restaurant El Navegante. Have dinner there after your trip. 4. The crew greeted us with a plate of fresh fruits, cheese, and deli meat. So luxurious~ 5. Took a short ride to Playa Tortuga in Culebrita where the water was so clear like swimming in a pool. Brought out the Bose speaker to set the mood. 6. We started to float in the water while the crew set up the beach chairs and umbrella for us. They brought the cheese plate, Bose speakers, drinks, and our phones via Kayak to the beach for us! That was so wonderful because last time we had to do it ourselves via Water Taxi. We felt so spoiled. 7. FRESH & HOT lunch! They grilled delicious shrimp and chicken on the boat for us. Paired with an amazing gourmet salad and asparagus. Don't forget to take pictures because it was so romantic. (last time I went on a Catamaran to Culebra, they gave us cold sandwiches) Probably the best meal I had in Culebra. 8. Camillo took us on a adventure via kayak that's included on our trip to the water pool near by. (I had to pay for a snorkeling tour separated last time so this was a definitely worth the money to book with Sea Culebra). Camillo took us on a snorkeling tour and we got to swim with turtles and saw a stingray. We both can't swim but with a life vest, Camillo gave us the confidence to explore these beautiful water. 9. Also included water a SUP board, floaties, kayaks, snorkeling gears and anything you'll need to lounge or exploring. And we LOUNGED! We will NEVER come back to Culebrita without booking with Sea Culebra again because it cost more and took a lot of time to logistically plan all the activities you should be doing in Culebra. Despite the unforgettable memories we made in Culebrita, we made friends with the crew that made the experience more memorable. BEST MOMENTS: 1. Made friends with crew 2. Greeted us with fruit platter 3. Fresh, hot lunch 4. Set up camp for us with everything we need (Bose speaker, beach chairs, snacks, drinks, phones, sunscreens, towels, floaties). We literally didn't lift a finger. 5. Included snorkeling and kayak adventure tours lead by Camillo. 6. The passion and love of nature from the crew made us fell in love with Culebrita 7. Allowed us to have quality time with each other I found them on TripAdvisor but directly booking with them will help small businesses! #smallbusiness

We were shuttled to and from the site by a funny great driver. Once there we were met by two informative guys who led us to our boats. They explained the process, gave us life jackets and oars. They helped us wade to our kayaks in pairs and off we went. One guy led in front, the other stayed in back. We quickly got to a spot and played with the water to trigger the bioluminescence. As the night progressed, the "glow" was better. Movement causes the glow so contrary to some pics, it's not always glowing unless you cause it. Unfortunately we didn't see any fish or turtles. Our guide Jake explained a lot of the history/makeup of the bay. He handled our questions effectively. I didn't get any pictures as they discourage cameras/phones and also say they capturing the images is difficult.
