I've always driven past Taj and couldn't wait to try it out. It's located in a plaza but it's not hard to find. Taj boldly delivers a feast for the table and the senses. We ordered family-style, and every dish that hit the table was vibrant, aromatic, and made with love. The tandoori chicken was simple yet so comforting, it arrived in a sizzling skillet adding a hint of flare in the presentation. Each chicken piece was beautifully charred, and coated in a bold, smoky marinade. The curries were so rich and each one had its own personality. The creamy yellow curry from the Chicken Korma was very rich in flavor while the saagwala was earthy, well-seasoned, and not over-puréed. Personally my favorite was the chicken korma the curry sauce was just on another level, I highly recommend this dish. The lamb biryani was another highlight with fragrant basmati rice and huge chunks of lamb generously garnished with fresh cilantro. Bread lovers be warned! The naan was hot, fluffy, and perfect for scooping up sauces. We also tried the aloo tikki as an appetizer and they were crisp on the outside yet so soft inside. Our new favorite Indian spot in Nashville! My husband and I came in around 8pm on a Saturday. It was busy, but we were greeted promptly and seated almost immediately as a table of departing diners was cleaned - perfect timing. The restaurant was clean, lively, and the music playing the whole time added a nice festive vibe. We originally planned to order the tomato soup and meat samosas, but since we arrived a bit late, both were sold out. We switched to the coconut soup and vegetable samosas instead, along with garlic naan, lamb vindaloo, and chicken tikka masala. I also ordered a beer, which arrived right away in a frosty mug and paired wonderfully with the complimentary papad, onion chutney, herb yogurt dip, and tamarind sauce. The vegetable samosas turned out to be an excellent substitution--packed with flavor and spices, with the sweetness of peas in every bite. The coconut soup, however, was pretty bland; next time we'll try the chicken soup instead. Entrées are served in small metal sauce pots with generous sides of rice. The lamb vindaloo was full of tender, melt-in-your-mouth pieces of lamb. We ordered medium spice; while it delivered heat, I preferred the deeper, more complex burn from the samosas over the chili-forward flavor of the vindaloo. The chicken tikka masala, though, might be one of the best I've ever had. The sauce had a smoky element that made it irresistible... I could've eaten the soft, fluffy naan dipped in that sauce alone for dinner. Though the chicken was just as impressive and wonderfully juicy. All of this food plus a beer came to just $60 - a welcome surprise of great value. We'll definitely be back (after we finish our truckload of leftovers)! read more

I ate here years ago and really enjoyed it. Back when it was up the road. I had known they moved locations, and the new space is very nice. I love the building and the spacious parking. When entering, I was immediately seated. I first noticed this new space is LOUD. I later checked my watch, and it said it was 80 dB inside. The music was WAY too loud. Also, their choice in music left a lot to be desired. It may just be me getting older, but I don't like reggaeton and hip hop in a dinner place. I know it's a casual dinner, but it's a bit much, especially at that volume level. On top of the open seating plan, the noise level was insane. If you want a nice, intimate dinner, look elsewhere. The second issue I had was the lack of attention from the wait staff. After placing my order, the wait staff did not even visit my table to see if I needed more water or to explain the reason for the delay. After 30 minutes, I tended to be more observant at the 3-4 tables of parties who were seated *after me and served food. The food was good but I kept comparing it in my head to Sindoore. Sindoore is simply better at everything. Better food, better ambience, and better attentiveness. At Sindoore, they continuously fill your water, and are very attentive. The atmosphere is less noisy. Again, the food here at Taj is good. I just like Sindoore better. When it came time to pay they used those handheld card readers. I paid and was finishing up before another staff member asked if I wanted the check. I told him I had already paid. Again, I don't typically give out 2 stars at a place where I enjoyed the food, but the service and other issues here are the exception. I have eaten at Taj before and found the food to be excellent. Two recent experiences of terrible service soured my opinion. First time we stood by the "wait to be seated" sign for more than 10 minutes and no one came near us. There were quite a few empty tables. We ended up walking out. Tonight while standing at same sign, a server came and said he'd be with us in a minute. 10 minutes passed before he came and seated us at one of many empty tables. Waited another 10 minutes before he bought menus. The another 5 he bought tableware and water. No enquiry if we were ready to order. We timed - 15 more minutes passed and no one came near our table. We walked out. Strangely, people entered after us, were seated and were already eating food, yet we had yet to be served. read more

I am in town for a wedding and was stuck in the hotel room due to it storming raining. I knew I would door dash but didnt know what. I love Indian food so I was glad to come across Taj, with high reviews. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. When it was delivered, I had no utensils. I had to go down to the lobby and have staff find me some. Once I get the tools to eat, I realize its not set up where I can eat easily: the tikka was in a plastic filled to the top and the rice was in a separate container filled to the top. How was I supposed to mix them without either container overflowing?? I got creative and ate out of a cup smh. The actual flavor of the tikka masala was good but the chicken had a weird taste. So I just skipped the chicken. Overall I was annoyed but my hunger was taken care of. Not the best overall takeout experience. read more

Had Indian food with some friends for the first time ever and I could say it wasn't a bad experience. As we went for dinner, I will point out that the prices are average/on the expensive side (in my opinion). With that note, we tried numerous of dishes I wish I taken a picture - but it was delicious for the most part! The men's bathroom was not the cleanest in my opinion and would have appreciated for it to be a bit more upkept. Service did take awhile for the food to come out, and I would say it was ~decently~ business but was far from being slammed. My friend also mentioned that when it comes to service - typically it may seem very "blunt" and a "straightforward" interaction rather than a conversation and exchanging "you're welcome" and "thank you." After this being pointed out, I can definitely see what he was referring to. I also asked for another cup of water and they simply did not get back to me, until I asked the server 2 additional times. Not to mention, but we needed an extra pair of utensils and getting our hands on this seemed too complicated (server just didn't get back to us once again) so we just took a set we saw at a table nearby. You can notice the staff not being very welcoming so it takes away from the experience. Is it fully authentic? Nope. Do I still love it? Absolutely! The weekend lunch buffet at Taj is hands down one of my favorite comfort meals in Nashville. 11-2:30 pm Saturday and Sunday, $13 of (primarily) Americanized Indian food. The new Taj location is a dream: plentiful parking, beautiful spacious interior that means even when they are slammed, they probably have an extra free table. I tend to go on the earlier side of lunch for less of a crowd, and they always seat us quickly and have plenty of options for the pure vegetarian or meat adventurous. My favorites on the buffet items are typically their off-menu items that seem to only appear at the buffet: the mushroom Manchurian, moong dal, and any vegetarian palya have been consistent favorites. I can also never resist the chicken 65 or butter chicken. They add so much unnecessary red dye to their meat items but they are still so addictively tasty. Service can be hit or miss here; sometimes (even if not busy) it's the end of my meal before I see my plate of fresh naan but when serving a dining room this large, I think some of that is to be expected. Please plan to need at least a two hour nap after your meal - but it's all well worth it. read more

Loved this restaurant! The service was quick and the food was great. I would highly recommend going here. I loved the large selection of items to choose from, not just your standard butter chicken and tikka masala. Honestly, the tikka masala was my least favorite. I loved the green chili chicken (can't remember the name of the dish) and the mango chicken. Would recommend sharing the mango chicken and pairing it with another savory dish because it was quite sweet. The chili chicken was cooked perfectly. Spice level here is on par with the culture. If you don't like things hot, get the mild. Medium was great for me because I like some spicy, but anything more than that would have been too much I think. Taj India was really good for the price we paid for the lunch buffet. I think the lunch buffet is more directed towards people who have never had Indian or tried Indian. The spice was very mild. I did try some new dishes tho which were fantastic they just ran out very quickly on the popular items. Inside is small but very open and perfect. The fresh naan was spit on crunchy on one side and soft and fluffy on the outside. The buffet had a wide arrangement. A salad, some papadam, and all sorts of different dishes, one was a vegetable meatball in like a korma sauce (had cashews and raisins) and that was honestly my favorite on the buffet. They ran out of it very quickly. My next favorite was the paneer tikka masala and hocus was firm pieces of cheese cooked in the tikka masala sauce and it was delicious. The chicken tikka masala was the same as any other Indian restaurant in the area. The Gulab Jamun were very sweet to finish the dish with, I didn't see any Kheer on the buffet but that was ok. The tandoori chicken was delicious (all dark meat but I prefer dark meat). But honestly my favorite was the vegetable meatball thing, it wasn't like a fake meatball it was almost like a round samosa in a korma sauce and had some spice to it and it was really delicious. The servers were attentive and quick to bring water and naan from the kitchen. I stopped at Taj Indian on a time crunch. I had around 30 minutes to fully enjoy the buffet before catching my flight. Sat down around 11:30 am and 60% of the tables were already full with lunchgoers. Food was hot, spiced, and comforting to the soul as it rained outside in humid TN. The paneer was in a cream sauce and tasted similar to the chicken tiki masala. Different options for rice gave endless combinations of flavors with different curries. The standout item was the tandoori chicken and the paneer. The chicken was smokey and charred without being dry. It was still flaky, and succulent, yet smokey with its characteristic flavor. The paneer was creamy with the hints of acidity and sweetness from the tomato pulled the dish together. It was rich without being overly heavy. The naan came out from the kitchen in a basket. This is where I thought some improvement could be helpful. The naan was warm but not hot. Tasted like it sat for a little while. It was fine but was lacking the crispy outside and gluten-chewy, fluffy, soft inside. Overall, would come back. Naan could have been better but maybe it was a one-off. Great value for a $13 lunch buffet that warms the body and soul . Will be back next time I'm back in TN. PS. Totally a place I pick up to-go from - and it is *great* for that! Love the variety of dishes I've ordered from them over the last few pickup trips: Baingan Bhartha, Chana Masala, Chana Palak, Palak Paneer, Vegetable Jalfrezi, Lentil Soup, and Bhindi Masala. Their flavors are distinct and complex - unlike most other Nashville area Indian restaurants. Taj seems to be in a class by itself with regards to flavor. Quantity is not the most generous, nor is it skimpy. An average portion is what you will get, and I'm good with that as the pricing is average ($11-$15 per entrée) compared to some other Nashville metro spots which charge more. In terms of experience, the restaurant interior (and restrooms) have a lot of room for improvement. After ordering a pickup order for the first time and upon seeing the inside of the actual restaurant for the first time, I declared mentally then-and-there that I would continue to order Taj food to-go until a full-blown remodel takes place (don't hold your breath). That being said, the food at Taj is quite excellent. Medium hot is actually medium hot here. On a world level, Taj knows what they're doing, and that's a relative rarity in the Nashville metro area with regards to non-BBQ, non-Gastropub establishments! read more
