We entered at 11a.m. when they opened for lunch and were disappointed that every table was filthy and there was still food all over the floor from the night before. I was very disappointed in the service at Taj Palace. All of the food was delicious, but our female server kept turning on her heel to leave us in the midst of asking about menu items, asking about appetizers, and ordering drinks and appetizers. She was ready to go home, or something! When she dropped off our naan, she proclaimed to someone other than me and my dining partner that "Cheese is on the bottom, garlic is on the top!" and then again promptly turned on her heel and proceeded to ignore us for the rest of our meal. The owner teased us about our order. Yes, the butter chicken is really good. Quit calling us boring and "basic" for ordering it. We wound up in Yakima for 1//2 day on business and found this resaturant on Yelp, It had great reviews so, since we love Indian food we decided to go. The owner who was up front was a bit sarcastic from the get go when I asked how much the buffet lunch was and he replied $200 while laughing but never told me what the cost was. I then asked the server and he said he thought it was $12.95. We don't like doing buffet as we are not big eaters and like taking home our leftovers. The server was very nice and polite. We odered lamb vindaloo, black lentil dal which includes basmati rice, roti, garlic nan, and garden salad. I asked for mint chutney as all indian restaurants offer it for free and a big container was in the lunch buffet, the server was nice and brought us some. We packaged our food and I asked the owner for a small condiment container to take the rest of my chutney and also for another one and he comes back with a container filled with with chutney that was twice the size I asked for, I told him that was a lot and he mentioned nothing about a charge. We got the bill and he had two separate charges, $1.99 for one mango chutney and $3.99 for mint chutney. I questioned the owner on the way out and he said they that how it is. I told him to show me where on the menu it states that the charge for mint chutney as a side and he said they don't have it on their but they do charge. After going back and forth as I wanted him to prove it me, he grab some cash and proceeded to give me $3.00 to $4.00 saying " take this to cover the charge" I said I did not need the money but asked for a desert instead to cover part of what he charged. He got an attitude and shouted to his server to give me 3 order of Gulab Jamun and I told the server just one order. He was being very obnoxious and pompous. I was surprised he behaved this way in front of customers. I hope that the owner will learn from this mistake and handle any other problems in the future better then what he did with me. I would have given them 5 stars had I gotten better service and not over charged unnecessarily, as the food is really good. I did thank the cook for a delicious meal. The owner needs to know that service and good food go hand in hand when it comes to getting great reviews. read more

What a pleasant surprise. After traveling for a week and getting tired of the usual deep fired food or pizza we wanted something different. We looked on YELP! And decided to go outside our comfort zone. This little restaurant is in an old Mexican restaurant (Taco Bell?). The parking lot was empty except for one lone car. We almost left, but we sat in the car and reread the YELP! reviews. With our courage renewed we ventured inside. We were not disappointed. Great food, fresh tasting and inexpensive. Came here with my fiancé for Valentine's Day and when leaving our house I grabbed the wrong card and so when I went to pay it was declining because it was the wrong one, I apologized and told them I would be right back with the correct card and that I was leaving my fiancé there, they instantly started looking at him funny and the lady told another gentleman to keep watch over my fiancé in case he runs right in front of him. It was a simple mistake and I DO NOT appreciate being treated like criminals. I live like 4 minutes up the road and was back very quickly. I will not be coming back here. They messed up our order a bit, but we're very apologetic. The food was very tasty, but the portions are pretty small for the price. We ordered our food at a spice level of 2 because my aunt can't handle more than that, which turned out to be a good choice. Taj Palace is still as good as it ever was and you should eat here again if you stopped coming after Jesse sold the restaurant. Sure some things taste different, but there are a ton of dishes - try something new! There are a 100 flavors in each dish I try during the buffet, always something new and the waitstaff is great. It makes me sad to see the parking lot empty mid day when it used to be packed every afternoon and evening. This is one of the few restaurants we have in town that features several vegetarian dishes and offers unique flavors and food. If you stopped coming, get back here! Taj was one of my two happy places in Yakima. I loved the owner and the food. The chai was always delicious and I never had to ask for it, she knew I would order it even if I had not been here for several weeks. It seems Taj has new owners now. The chai is simply deplorable. The food quality has gone down as well. My old favorites are terrible. The tandoori kitchen paneer microwave meal is vastly superior to the paneer of the new Taj. This is just sad. That chai though... I bet my tea would taste better infused through a dirty sock. read more

I was with my friends and we shared a Lamb korma, Lamb Saag, Butter chicken, and two more dishes and all of them was just fantastic. The portions were huge and the price is acceptable! Excellent Indian food. I've ordered similar dishes in (more expensive) restaurants in big cities (Seattle, SLC) and I think Taj is way better. The food on the buffet is usually not very spicy, but you can ask for some chili powder to kick it up if you want (hey, it's a buffet, if they made it as spicy as I like it, most people couldn't eat it). Being Indian, I have a strong appreciation for good Indian food. Being from Chicago, I have a large palate for good Indian good. This being Yakima, Taj exceeded all my expectations! I would consider it as good or even better than a large portion of the Indian food we have in Chicago. Great variety in dishes, I am happy to see such a large vegetarian selection as we are in Yakima and I would think they cater to the crowd here. I love their paneer tikka masala and palak paneer, my friends rave about their butter chicken. Love their garlic naan and plain naan, right out of the oven and can't say enough about the rose lassi, it is delicious! One star off for the price - considering I realize what the value of the portion size is, I would say it is a bit pricey. Considering there are no other Indian establishments in the radius, it doesn't really seem to hurt them, non-Indians are willing to pay whatever for the goodness. =) but hey that's their business strategy and the fact that they decided to be smart about opening Taj in Yakima is their win. Didn't take off a star but I feel strongly about the vegetarian selection in the buffet. While there is an even amount of vegetarian and non vegetarian options, the vegetarian options are very bland next to their counterparts. I would suggest placing tastier dishes such as paneer tikka, shahi paneer and palak paneer in the buffet. These are also significantly more filling than the vegetable curries. If you can offer chicken and other meat than at least let the vegetarians make a filling meal out of the buffet. I never go for it for that reason, it would be too expensive for me for the vegetarian dishes offered. Great to have a piece of home out here though! read more
