On a recommendation from our super nice server at The Open Oven restaurant, we stopped in to Take a Hike to grad a pair from him. We we happy to see that they allow pets/dogs in the store so that one of us wasn't stuck in the car with the pups. The store has tons of great clothes, shoes, socks and other supplies you might want for hiking. Great local outdoor store. Love shopping local and how chill this place is. Upon entering, staff always greet you. Small town feels. There is typically plenty of parking in the lot or nearby. Standard small town hours. The shop is clean and organized. They have a good sampling of outdoor gear. Lots of seasonal clothing, some camping gear and backpacks and some Knick knacks such as hydration tabs and stickers. There is a sale rack in back. Everything is very pricy as goes with outdoor gear shops especially small ones. I would still argue that it's pretty similar to the standard- not more expensive than REI or the like. I'd definitely recommend this place for a stop in. They have a nice curated selection. Plus it's always the season for a fun new outdoor toy to inspire you to get outside ;) read more

My husband and I came to Black Mountain for the weekend. We saw Take a Hike when we were checking out the area. We pulled into the lot to check the hours. Even though they were closed a man, who I assume was the owner, waved us in. THAT WAS SO AWESOME!! The store was well laid out. They carry a lot of great brands and prices were in line with what you'd expect at any outfitter. We were able to get some great stuff at reasonable prices. We even got some great restaurant recommendations. We will definitely be back whenever we are in the area. read more

The lady who probably is an owner of the business rightly advised us on maintaining the rain jackets we got from this place and probably saved me from ruining my newly purchased Marmot jacket. Visiting in Montreat and wanted to join a group hike tomorrow. I'm 70, and a total novice. I was told to check out this store and they were fabulous. A staffer named Willow, told me everything I needed to know about hiking poles. Both Willow and the other staff woman (didn't get her name) were sooo friendly and supportive and helpful. Working only a few miles from Black Mountain all summer gave me a wonderful opportunity to experience this gem! I had heard about this place from co-workers as I pondered where I would be able to find a pair of Chacos at a good price with staff that have a good amount of knowledge in their lore. Take a Hike was just that. When I went to purchase Chacos, an associate was quick to assist me in selecting a pair that would fit me just right. After helping me with my size, he even assisted me in fitting the straps to my foot and instructing me on the best way to wear them and care for them. I left being very pleased with my purchase. In addition to great customer service, they had a wonderfully large selection of Chacos to choose from! Last weekend, I made a trip back up to Black Mountain for a wedding. I had wanted to buy an Eno at the end of the summer, but when I had the chance to go, they were out of Doublenest Enos. Luckily, I was able to find half an hour to rush over to there and was ecstatic to see that they had a fresh batch of Enos in a wide array of colors! I knew what I wanted, so after choosing a color, I looked for straps. After seeing that Eno added a new Atlas strap to their repertoire, I struggled in choosing a set of straps for my Eno. However, Take a Hike proved just how wonderful their customer service was, and the owner came to help me decide which straps to get! Again, an easy and pleasant experience. The overall atmosphere is very relaxed. The employees are very knowledgable in the equipment that they carry. Their equipment will satisfy most intermediate outdoorsmen, and quite possibly even a good number of experienced backpackers. The extraordinary customer service that I had both times combined with a 20% discount that I had received while working at Ridgecrest this summer really made me a happy customer of Take a Hike. If I ever return to the area, I will for sure be back to purchase something else! read more

I have taken groups of 10 and more here for three years, and was on the fourth by myself with the group back at the rooms, and had an absolutely degrading experience. It seems like they have hired several young people who do not know how to talk to customers, or do they care to know. The look at you and talk to you like you don't deserve to be in their presence, much less in their store. Being a tourist-like area, it is quite dumb for the owner to let this happen. I spoke with him, and all he had to say was that he was sorry and that he would never have done that, and did not fix situation or get onto young employee. Do people a favor and NEVER waste time going in there to be looked upon like a wretch! read more

I'm not sure if this place has changed in the last year or so but as far as an outdoor store goes it is pretty much a joke. Their "map selection" is so poor that I was advised by the employee helping me there to go elsewhere because as he put it "we don't really carry anything relevant to this area." They do not have even the most basic local guidebooks in stock and unless the only place you want to hike is on a christian college campus the staff seemed to have absolutely no knowledge of outdoor attractions in the area. The long and the short of it is that unless you are a yuppie from out-of-town looking to spend far too much name-brand "gear" you are better to drive the extra 25 minutes to Asheville. read more

I love outdoors stores, and I've shopped in many across the country. This is one of the best small outdoors shops I've ever been in. They carry the brands serious outdoors enthusiasts love (like Patagonia, Kuhl, Outdoor Research), have a wide selection of just about everything (shoes, hats, jackets, camping equipment, etc.). They are locally owned, and often feature some pretty deep discounts. We check out the store at least once every time we're in town. read more

Very impressive store. The owner did an excellent job fitting me for hiking boots, and had personal experience with 3 brands I tried. I'm extremely happy with them after two break-in hikes! Ordered a Tacx Neo2T and it was delivered quickly. Overall, the transaction went very smoothly, the price was lower than anywhere else I could find and the shipping was free and quick. The only complaint was a failure to respond to a message sent through Messenger, but I did receive emails stating when the item would ship along with tracking number and a message confirming delivery. Good, local hiking shop. They share a building with the bike shop next door. Their prices aren't the cheapest, but the folks working there seem to know their stuff. Occasionally, you can find them running a sale. They've got a great selection of maps from the area (USGS quads, National Geographic maps printed on that waterproof paper) too! We only came in for one thing - a warmer long sleeve shirt - it was easy to find and we got one at a good price. I could have bought a lot more though, I saw a lot of nice shirts, a wide selection of shoes and camping gear, and smart wool socks (my personal favorite). They had a really great selection and on par price wise with an REI or Outdoor World. They also had some local hiking guides. Overall I would definitely shop here again. read more

I'm from Alaska and spend a great deal of time outdoors. We pass through Black Mountain and Asheville not infrequently, and stop in Take a Hike whenever we do. I've not found an outfitter more committed to their vocation nor with more customer service and integrity. Where I live (and with what I do) I trust my life to my gear. As such, I'm of the opinion that it's definitely worth paying a penny (or dollar) more to someone who knows their stuff in and out, and who you trust. read more
