We visit Asheville once or twice a year and will wait to buy shoes until we can get there and go to Tops. They are especially good at rugged and comfortable shoes, whether for the trail or the office, and helped us pick the right shoes for my wife, who is hiking the Camino de Santiago this fall. This is the best shoe store in America, in my opinion. While there are plenty of shoe options in Los Angeles where I live, the options at this store are incredible. Tops is THE place for shoes in Asheville. Their fantastic selection and impeccable service set them apart from other shops. Although the prices aren't necessarily cheap, per se, they are fair. And Tops stands behind their products, as illustrated by my recent experience there. I bought some chukkas at Tops and wore them for a few months. One day I noticed that one of the grommets had come loose. I couldn't find my receipt but took them back, hoping for a cheap repair. They found the purchase in their system, apologized for the grommet coming off, and proceeded to give me a brand new pair! Service like that is pretty hard to find these days. It's a huge footwear store in Downtown Asheville. We were just window shopping but we found a couple of great clearance deals on sandals and shoes. We ended up buying the leather sandals which was on the clearance section. Great big store. Very well designed to provide better visibility and accessibility to everyone. It's easy to find the men's and women's section. If you are looking for Nikes and this is not the store for you. They have all the good brands except Nike, Adidas and Under Armor. Great selection of hiking shoes. Staff is very helpful. I have been going to Tops for about 20 years, and hate to write less than a 5 star review. I visit family in town often, and always try to make it in. I love shoes and have picky feet, so Tops is great for selection of quality brands. I always find what I'm looking for, and that rarely happens with shoes besides online with Zappos. The positives are selection and salespeople. Several clerks asked if I needed help, even though they were busy. They were low pressure and allowed me to " try out" a shoe for a few minutes looking around the store to be sure. I sometimes think a shoe is comfortable, buy it, then find later it won't pass the all day test, so this was great. I appreciated him wanting me to be sure. Now the negatives, the prices are higher, and they will not match. I could see the shoe I wanted for $15 cheaper on Zappos, and a couple other online retailers, and they wouldn't match. I'd be ok with that to support local even though I hate to over pay, except without any warning as soon as I bought the shoes, the clerk immediately stamped " no returns " all over my receipt? I didn't know that as I was buying, so I'm glad I was really certain. I mean these were very expensive and not clearanced out. They were slightly on sale, but less at several other places, and widely available at many other retailers. Why would they be so " final sale"? To top it off, they no longer validate for parking at the garages across the street. So as much as I love Tops from the past, I wasn't as impressed this trip. This makes me sad, but I can't justify paying more, risking no returns ( I wouldn't return a worn shoe, but sometimes you change your mind or realize a shoe isn't as comfortable as you thought?) I didn't appreciate the pricing being higher than many other places and the non validation of parking. I hate to say it but they need to consider these things because it's really tough to compete with all the online places and other competition, even with great salespeople. I bought a pair of Hokas from Tops that started to split along the side seam. This was obviously a defect but at the same time it had been almost a year since I had purchased these shoes. I had a really great experience here. The gentleman that helped me was super knowledgeable and hospitable. He was patient as I tried on various tennis shoes, and I was grateful to find a pair that suited me. The On Performance shoes I got were marked at the correct market price and no price gauging was involved. I was content with that because there have been a couple of places I have been to that overcharged for this brand. I prefer to try on shoes in person over ordering online. I go out of my way to pass by here once a year because every time I go, I find at least three pairs of shoes. This is near impossible for me because I'm a bit prissy about shoes. The customer SERVICE is unrivaled and on par with what you would find in a shoe store 50 years ago. There is a nice selection of bags, running shoes, men's and children's shoes and ladies shoes. I just returned from going in Tops for Shoes. I have been going into the store of the past 46 years. I have to say I have not had the experiences other folks have had in regards to service and friendliness. Again, today I walked in the men's store, looked, walked all the way around and then went up to the clearance section, came back down, walked around again in the men's store then left. I was not greeted, asked if I could be helped, NOTHING! That happens just about every time I go in to buy a pair of shoes. There was one time that I can remember when a salesperson in the men's department actually spoke to me and asked me if they could help me. He helped me and I bought a pair of shoes. I can count on one hand the times when someone spoke to me, much less helped me. Most of the time there aren't any sales people in the men's department. And if they are they are standing around looking at their phones or talking to each other and not greeting the customers. So, good luck!! read more
