Hands down, this was a complete experience and a must see when visiting Asheville. It is a relic from the old days when general stores literally were just that and generally had everything. The place is massive and is located in the major retail and dining section, so park where you can. I went in there specifically for some snacks, but walked out with clothes, food, syrup, honey, and much more. They have multiple registers so it was a fast check out despite this place always appearing to be crowed. Also, they have a basement that looks more like a legit retail/clothing store than a general store and they also had a bunch of antiques around too. I was in awe of the old school cash register. Again, this is a must see and is great for the kids because of the authentic and homemade sweets and treats. read more

I love a general store, and Mast General Store is a good one. They've amassed so many goods -- and it's on two levels. There's clothing, decorations, foodstuffs, barrels of candy, toys, souvenirs... I spent so much time on the first floor I didn't even go down to the lower level so I have no idea what's even down there. I even bought some clothes -- what I will now refer to as my Pioneer Woman outfit -- totally not my style but so soft and comfortable. Bring the whole family -- the kids will enjoy the large toy and candy section -- and I didn't even look at the large Mast-branded jams, jellies and jarred food section because I wouldn't be able to fit them in my suitcase. Been to Mast several times and it's pretty solid. There is a lot of options and goodies to be found here so take your time and explore both levels. The candy selection is amazing. Walking in omg they actually had cute stuff! As I was trying on everything my son was offered free pokemon cards which basically made his night. Plus hey now we didn't have to buy him a toy lol. Ended up getting him a shirt and sadly nothing for me. I still wish I had gotten a sweatshirt I liked from there, it was so soft. Such a fun shop full of gifts and goodies! I collect patches and they had a few good ones to choose from to memorialize my trip to Asheville. They also had a good variety of children's books. Another thing I collect for my daughter as a reminder of our travels. I was able to get some of their Christmas goods on sale. My biggest "complaint" was that someone took a very long time to use the bathroom. The other bathroom cycled through 5 people before the other one opened up. Anything you are looking for you can find at this store! It's two levels so there's plenty of souvenirs, outdoor activity clothing (hiking, fishing, skiing), books and food. They have an area in the back with choose your own candy and they have all the old school candies that we grew up with. Staff was very helpful. Like any proper tourist, I found myself gravitating in here as I walked by. It worked out well for a few reasons, the primary one being the fact that I was behind on holiday shopping and found some goodies here! Quick side story; my friend and I ride through Missouri on the Katy Trail, and off the trail are all these little historic towns and whatnot. One of them, Washington, MO is a river town that manufactured all the original corn cob pipes (Meerschaums). We visited this year, and it's quirky and whatever but I have no need for a corn cob pipe so we moved on about our lives. Flash forward a few months and we had a big snowstorm and I made a snowman for my kids, when all of a sudden I had a flash of regret that we didn't have an old corn cob pipe to throw in there. Mast General Store to the rescue! They had the exact one straight from Washington, MO, and I got it on my second chance. A perfect stocking stuffer. In addition, there's lots of outdoor gear, candies, games, and just fun stuff to look through. The staff was friendly and conversational too. Fun store and glad to have found it! read more

One of the things I love about Asheville is that most places are dog friendly - and Mast General is Jäger approved. Found this general store while exploring downtown. Ended up coming here 2 times during our stay. They have everything!!! Candy, winter wear, hiking gear, cologne, food, sunglasses---and so much more. They also have Asheville logo'd items if you're looking for those types of souvenirs. And freshly popped popcorn. We all found something to buy while here-both days! This location seemed smaller than the location closer to me in downtown Winston-Salem. We love Mast stores and have never gone in with not buying anything. The visit this time was a good visit and I could have actually bought more but thought since I have a location close to me I would buy from my local store. I'm surprised I missed this place in numerous Asheville trips; though half of it is underground. It is a variety store with apparel and shoes suited to the mountains, plus food items including candy, some handy odds and ends stuff for trails, pet supplies, cosmetics, really a bit of everything. The apparel was largely quality brands, but mostly I wanted some distinctive local food items. I did pick up a key ring tool or two as well. Prices were on the high side, and I suspect I'm like most people in that I don't do a lot of clothes shopping in person at this point, but at least here there were things worth buying. read more

Stores like Mast General Store, old school stores that have a bit of everything, are hard to come by. That's why every time we are in Asheville we drop in for a visit. Some of the items that Mast General Store has for sale: clothing, shoes, toys, old school candy in bulk, outdoor equipment, local food and touristy gifts. During our most recent visit, my kids gravitated to the toys and candy. I loved the mixture of old school toys and new ones. It provided a unique connection that my wife, kids and I could make with each other. The candy had a number of bulk items labeled "vegan" which made my life easier (I opted for the vegan sour cherry gummies). My kids the sour watermelon straws. I needed some flip flops and so after our candy and toy browsing, we headed downstairs to preview the footwear. Mast had a lot of options to choose from. Both high end and mid tier (didn't see any super cheap ones). I found a pair that fit my budget. As I was trying them on an employee came over and assisted with sizing. Mast General Store isn't cheap. But the prices seemed comparable to other independent shops I've visited. They aren't a Walmart or Target, you aren't going to find rock bottom prices. But it is a cool local and independent shop that has a great location. I'd recommend stopping by if you are in Asheville. read more

Friendly employees. I was asked by several people if I needed help which is something we don't see often enough. Lots of country stuff here and a wide assortment of older candies by the pound (pretty tasty so worth it). Check out was very friendly. They were very busy but still delivering top level customer service. Dedicated parking for here is just a handful of spaces but there are several parking garages near by (but pay by hour) Was surprised to see they even sold RSVLTS shirts. Lots of country apparel plus Patagonia clothes also and even different types of hats. If general stores that sell clothes and knicknacks are your jam, then check this place out! read more

What a step into 1900s with this great general store! This place is quite large for downtown Asheville, two stories, with items to buy from hiking and fishing supplies to baking and cookings items. I found great gifts to buy the family right in the store. We bought their special Apple Butter and biscuit baking mix for our parents. Their staff was super friendly when we had a few questions regarding our gifts. With their help, we were able to save 10% off our bill.
