Artfully laid out displays of produce
    John K.

Talarico's has become our go-to destination for both day-to-day produce, and for stocking up on whatever is currently in season. Having a somewhat open air market nearby is one of those things that I find delightful when traveling in Europe, so having the same experience in my neighborhood always makes me happy to shop here. Their checkout line impulse purchases are Swedish dish sponges, which are loads of fun if you've never tried one. A combination of artful presentation and well designed lighting make it irresistible to pull out my phone, or sometimes go out of my way to bring my better camera, just to get pictures of what they have. There is better parking here than you'll find at most Hawthorne businesses. A parking lot out front is shared with the bakery next door. If you're driving westbound, a traffic island forces you to turn onto SE 22nd and enter the lot from the side.

The produce here is fresh and varied: root vegetable, lots of fruits, nuts, lettuce, and mushrooms. The selection goes beyond the staples of a produce stand with fresh figs, and unique varieties. I picked up some perisean cucumbers and radishes to eat at some wineries today with some local cheeses I bought elsewhere.

It's an adorable stand with fresh produce, things you wouldn't expect like Hawaiian papaya and guava! Very affordable in pricing and the produce looked well taken care of - you didn't come across molded or bruised fruits. They also had a selection of honeys! I'd take this spot over a Whole Foods any day!

Kruger's produce is gone, but thankfully just a block away is now Talarico's! Great selection of organic and non-organic fruits, veggies, herbs, and jams, all at what look to be very fair prices! The staff are nice and they're open 9am-7pm every day!

    Discount produce!

Very nice produce! Not expensive, cheaper than Fred Meyer and other stores. There were some bees on the berries outside, which I found rad. But maybe not if you're allergic. Their discount produce was $2 or less for a lot! I also saw last time I was there that they accept EBT.

I spent just a little over $10 and left with a bunch of fruit and vegetables. I was able to buy a little small baggie of tumeric from Fiji. A bunch of asparaguses was only a couple of dollars. Definitely worth a stop, and it's literally in Grand Central station's parking lot! There's a card limit just like most produce stands, but you'll want to spend more than the card minimum. Everything was fresh and tasty and probably a little less than Fred Meyer or New Seasons!

    They have local strawberries already!

While it's a retail market with fresh fruit and veggies, a high quality butcher counter, deli, pantry items, spices, grains and beans, and premade meals, the bulk of their business is supplying to hundreds of local restaurants. During and after Covid, many of these restaurants went out of business which affects the entire supply chain. Sheridan's has suffered. Additionally, suppliers have raised their prices and residential shopping in the area has greatly decreased. All these factors combined have had serious consequences to this once thriving market. Sadly. When I stopped in earlier this month to buy escarole, a green leafy veg for Italian wedding soup, I was shocked to find most of the shelves bare. I was heartbroken, actually. This gem of a store has enabled me to make all of my favorite Italian dinners because they carry ingredients that most other stores don't. I'm from an Italian family and lived my entire life in NJ until moving to Portland in 2000. The first fall, when the weather chilled and I was craving Italian Wedding Soup, escarole was not available anywhere. Thankfully I found Sheridan's and have been a loyal customer ever since. I am doing my best to support them by buying my produce and veggies there, plus whatever other items I can find that I need. It is challenging since their shelves are not stocked, which means I buy what I can at Sheridan's and supplement from another grocery store. But that's what you do to help a business in need. Please, if you live in the area, buy what is available and help them through this very difficult time. Sheridan's is such a gem and it would be a tremendous loss to Portland to lose this market.

The market is well-stocked with unique shelf items from around the world-- pastas, jams/jellies, biscuits, oils, vinegars, tinned fish, and legumes. They have a vast deli case with meats, cheeses, and prepared items. The meat and fish counter is magazine-worthy and they feature some hot-food specials using meats and sausages from their counter. The wine selection is expansive-- we even saw a few bottles from the Loire region of France which we had the great fortune decades ago to visit family friends. It was the produce area that really made my heart sing and my eyes bug out. The produce section is colorful, artfully arranged. I could practically feel the antioxidants beaming into my body! I have never seen SO many varieties of alliums in my life. They had four different types of "green onion" (scallion, green garlic, calçot, and red spring onion), plus mahoosive leeks. We had a great experience with service which was friendly, helpful, and prompt. Since we were out and about doing other things we didn't get anything that required refrigeration like cheese, meats or produce, but we did have sandwiches from the deli case which were tasty. I look forward to going back for some of the produce and cheeses.

I lived walking distance from People's Co-op circa 2004 where I lived right across from the now defunct all vegan coffeeshop aka Red and Black. In 2004-2005 I was a working member cleaning the bulk bins as my seva aka service. This is where I first started teaching yoga at the community room upstairs at People's Co-op. Dusty started the program that sadly is no longer currently active. They had some great classes there and have fond memories of a Iyenger influenced yoga teacher that taught classes I liked. This was when I was teaching classical hatha yoga and had not yet shifted my yoga teaching to the Ashtanga Vinyasa tradition. Fast forward to the moment of Jun 20223. It's the return and went to People's Co-op. It still is an amazing place. They have a farmer's market here every Wed. Their bulk selection is amazing (see my photos) and so is there produce. Friendly and helpful staff. Afterwards go to Belmont for heaps of plant based, vegetable forward, tasty, amazing vegan restaurants and food trucks that are amazing. Vegan bars, vegan food trucks, innovative vegan restaurants like Fermenter, and more that will satisfy all folks who follow whatever diet from vegan to paleo to gluten-free to omnivore.

The cheese and crack sundae has toasted marshmallow, chocolate, and cinnamon cracker crumbs. Omg the cinnamon crumbs are so good, that with the ice cream was really yummy (I'm a simple girl what can I say). The chocolate hardened into a chocolate shell and it was kind of only on the bottom of the cup so that was a little disappointing. The toasted marshmallow didn't add much, but maybe I'm biased bc I don't rlly care for toasted marshmallow ‍ Overall, the entire sundae is mainly a ton of vanilla ice cream. It's a big portion that I shared with someone else. Second time I went, I got the banana pudding sundae which was soooo good. I shared this with my friend and it was plenty. They give a good amount of banana pudding and you can tell it's quality. I saw bananas, the bread/wafer part, and it pairs nicely with the ice cream. Prob my favorite thing from this place. My other friend got the pbo which was also good. They layer oreo and peanut butter pudding so you get it all throughout the sundae which is nice. She also got an everything cookie which has literally everything in it. It was texturally interesting and not too sweet! Overall, good flavors and quality ice cream. The portions are a bit big and I wish they had half or even quarter sizes since these came in huge cups. At a certain point, the vanilla ice cream becomes flavorless bc there's so much of it but the sundaes were still pretty good!
