I am truly sad this place is closing the end of this year. It's been wonderful experiencing this place for the final time. This place has been a hit for the past 5 years and the owners and employees have been very friendly to us. I appreciate what the restaurant has brought to us and the food was spectacular. The restaurant was small but we were able to get a seat at the beginning of opening. We will never forget this place and the atmosphere it brought to the PNW. Thank you and we will all miss you. Arigato and wish you all the best in your next journey.

A great local spot for fresh and big pieces of sushi! When I came here, it was a bit busy, so I enjoyed the sushi outside (thankfully, it was a warmer day haha). Staff was very friendly and service was good. We ordered a variety of nigiri and two rolls. The portions were HUGE and the fish was pretty fresh. We definitely over-ordered but everything was delicious. Would definitely come back.

So sad they closed. Cheers to retirement! I sure will miss their delicious, fresh sushi.

Food was good, waitress was nice. We sat outside which is situated next to the dumpster though which is not the nicest. Prices are very affordable for Portland area. Fish tasted fresh. There is one bathroom for customers (which is pretty good considering it's such a small store). I would come back for sure.

It's arguably the grungiest sushi spot in PDX. The locale is not ideal with trash dumpsters right next to the few picnic tables for outdoor seating. The neighboring grocery store attracts passerbys that are uncomfortable. Indoor is cramped and really cramped. Decor is a sort of mess mixed with supplies lacking storage. The kitchen is inches away and clamouring is the background music. Service ~ probably what they could afford is a single young person hustling all the tables. Dressed like a teen but serves like a pro. The mannerisms is high polite Japanese level. One of the few spots where tips are well deserved. They always say thank you as you leave. Sushi simple ~ fresh & thick cuts. No fancy sauces. Touch of mayo. And most importantly, perfect rice texture. Japanese street style, great price point, family owned authentic. Repeat customers.

With crazy inflated food prices these days it's a gem when you find a restaurant that provides quality food and value. The lunch combo C was around $16 and came with 14 pieces of sushi. The quality of the rice and fish tasted fair for the price. Interior space feels like an unassuming but quirky curated hole-in-the-wall restaurant. This place is great for a quick and affordable meal.

This a hidden gem! The restaurant itself is small and in the same building as a Plaid Pantry - but when you walk in it is cute, inviting, and smells great. The staff are friendly, hard working, and the food came out quickly. All of the fish on the nigiri and sashimi plates are tender, fresh and flavorful - the salmon and seared salmon were particularly delicious! The spicy scallop roll was also wonderfully fresh, creamy, and had just the right amount of spice. They also have a nice sake and beer selection.

On our 4-day visit to Portland, we were still craving more sushi, so we looked on yelp and found Kashiwagi. One of our major criteria was that every restaurant we went to had to allow dogs since we had the Princess with us. It was a perfect day for dining al fresco, not too hot, not too cold, not windy. They have three picnic style tables in front of the restaurant. Service was very good. Any questions that we had that the server did not know the answer to, she went inside and got us an answer. Our bounty included: Mentaiko Potato Salad - 3 - was okay but more of an American Potato Salad than a Japanese one. I was told that there wasn't enough Mentaiko (Pollock Roe) Kinpara - 4 - Very tasty. More sesame seeds could have upped the score to 5. Agedashi Tofu - 3 - We prefer a more robust sauce, and we missed our bonito flakes. Tempura Combo - 5 - Lightly battered and delicious! Lunch Combo C - 4 - A wonderful selection nigiri and your choice of one of three rolls to choose from (3 pieces). The cuts of fish were generous and delicious. I would have enjoyed it even more if the rice had been half the size with the same size fish. One thing that I noticed was the rice kept falling apart. Hamachi Kama - 4 - Usually broiled, this one appeared to be deep fried. It was clean and tasty though, without an abundance of oil. Usually served with a ponzu/soy sauce, this one was served naked but it was very good. Saba Ginger Roll - 4 - Saba is not my kind of fish but it was given a good score. Plenty of mackerel and the right amount of vinegar add flavor but not be overwhelming. Japanese Veggie Roll - 5 - Excellent flavors and execution. Ika Nigiri - 5 - Great texture and flavor. Ikura - 4 - For whatever reason, the Ikura didn't have as much flavor as we had expected. Overall, this was an excellent meal and we would definitely return in the future.

The HIGHS: - My go-tos are the sashimi plate, chirashi bowl, or the lunch sets - Fish cuts are solid quality for the price and nicely presented - chirashi bowl is a VERY good deal - Local business owned by a older Japanese couple - Small intimate setting creates a nice atmosphere The MIDS: - I wish the fish was colder, sometimes it comes out room temperature-ish - Very busy during dinner time with limited sitting The LOWS: - None :) CONCLUSION: - Lowkey hole in the wall place with solid sushi for the price with mom and pop vibes

This place is a vibe. Gets crowded for dinner. It so good. the fish slices were HUGE! Look at the salmon ones. AND it's incredibly affordable, especially in this day and age where everything feels so expensive. The 12 piece was filling and just around $15. And that chirashi bowl, jammed packed with fish and below is a ton of rice!!!! They serve asahi, which is just the right kind of beer to go with this meal. This is a sweet mom and pop shop. Seriously a hidden gem.

We love this place. Before COVID Kashi was over near our place (Terwilliger Plaza built their newest tower on our block). We were THRILLED to find his new location here, a simple bus ride away. You might be a bit worried by the location & ambience, but fear not! Anything you order will be skillfully and beautifully served. And the flavor & freshness match or exceed other classier joints. We always order the oyster hand roll, the seared salmon, and (when available; they go fast) the fried salmon collar. Who else will give you a pot of green tea for $2?? So run don't walk over here. Tell Kashi that Julie & David sent you.

I came back for lunch and the quality is still exactly the same. The food is delicious, the owners are always smiling and kind, yet the prices are still reasonable. The place looks exactly the same with the cozy hole in the wall vibes. I definitely love the decor of little Japanese treats you can buy. Still highly recommend this place! 11/10 rating

The best deal on sushi I've had in a long time. Hole in the wall spot (nestled by a Plaid Pantry) that gets really busy. Wait was kind of a mood to sit outside at the picnic tables with a pot of tea while the rain dumped. Fish was delish - I shall be returning.

Brunch in Portland, Oregon…read more.. After I read reviews about Portland's Chinatown, I searched for a dimsum place outside of Chinatown and found Jade Rabbit I liked the name of the place and saw that they had two kinds of rabbit-shaped dimsum! Another cool thing is that their menu is vegan... that means that I don't have to worry about dairy products that give me pain. We found free street parking about a half a block away and waited for Jade Rabbit to open at 11am. We didn't have reservations, but we're seated immediately. The decor was great! I enjoyed looking at all of the Rabbit figurines! The furniture was colorful and the convenient restroom had interesting decorations, too! The service was okay. Some items were not available and our server recited the list that included chow funn. Shucks! She came back later and said that the chow funn was, in fact, available... yay! Our server seemed a bit nervous as her hand shook and placed the special menu upside-down... LOL! We won't bite you! She recommended the Ube Jam drink - it was made with coconut cream... yes! The chow funn was a bit bland. We added some soy sauce. The Puto Pao Bunny Bao had an unusual flavor - maybe the brown sugar can be omitted because the black garlic and vegan pork might be fine without it? The Jade Rabbit Dumplings also could be more savory. Something was off... and the filling was a bit sparse. Anyway, maybe we could have ordered better, but we got what we wanted! Thank you for the cute food! Note: 22 percent is added to the bill - so no need to tip.

We came after the Xmas bonanza week and they were out of a few things we wanted to try. Even though they were minor bummers, the person helping us was extremely apologetic and provided great service. We probably ordered too much, because the table felt really small. All of the dishes were beautifully presented and they were all delicious. The ambiance itself was semi dark, there was a lot of hustle and bustle, but still quiet enough you can have a conversation. Spicy edamame - Feisty edamame. Why eat boring edamame with you can have some spice with it! Spicy salmon tartare - tempura nori that was fried like a chip, topped with salmon tartare on one side and avocado/cilantro crema on the other. I had to mix it together before eating it, the avo/cilantro side was too rich on its own. 7 spiced calamari - Out :( Ceviche + taro chips - Out of taro chips, we were offered rice instead of chips so we cancelled the order. Chicken Karaage - Fried chicken, no complaints. Fresh wasabi - Out, but my we got to sample a little nugget of it. Spicy tuna crispy rice - YUMMMMMM. We almost ordered this one and the salmon one. Luckily we didn't because an order has 6 pieces. Crispy flavor bomb though, do it. Steak tataki - yum. I remembered liking it, but it wasn't out of this world. Chopped salad - I missed the part it has iceberg lettuce. I was disappointed. In a world of romaine or any other leafy green, why does iceberg lettuce exist on a menu?! Never again. The unicorn - DELICIOUS. This has spicy crab, shrimp tempura, albacore, avocado, jalapeno dressing, gochugaru oil, micro cilantro. So flavorful. Rainbow - Yum. Good classic roll. Haupia pie - out Black sesame brownie - out Ginger pot de creme - I wasn't a fan.. it was chewy mush. The charred orange segment was bland/tasteless. It didn't have the citrus tang the dessert needed. Crystalized ginger was chewy as expected, macadamia nuts are pretty soft as far as nuts go, and the creme. I felt like a different nut would have added better texture. So disappointed our choice desserts were out. We got this as a birthday dessert, so we appreciated that! Overall we had a nice birthday dinner and will likely be back for some of those stand out items we had and try some of the ones we didn't get to!

This restaurant was perfect! Their decor is really cool, with plenty of seating at the sushi bar, the beverages bar, booths, and a small patio courtyard (not much of a view outside, though). For our food we had the seaweed salad, Bo Gyoza (long pan-fried dumplings), grilled Mackerel fish, a side of rice, and the "Tampopo" Omu-Rice dish. Everything was cooked perfectly & absolutely delicious! The Omu-Rice dish was quite unique, with small pieces pork & veggies atop a bed of rice that's been seasoned with ketchup, and on top of it all is a perfect fluffy Japanese egg omelet - so freakin' yummy! The food comes out in whatever order it's ready, as is typical at a Japanese restaurant, so if you want something first, be sure to let your server know. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the high quality of the ingredients & preparation, which was a plus. My friend opted to order some happy hour gyoza and a small curry so she could try it. We then ordered off the regular menu. I personally tried one of her veggie gyoza {which was delicious and VERY crispy} and ordered sushi. I ordered salmon nigiri, hoso-maki hamachi, the tempura shrimp roll {shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, sesame seeds & unagi sauce} and the Frenchy roll {spicy tuna, krab salad, & avocado, topped salmon, spicy mayo, house made unagi sauce & fried onion}. It was all amazing! Sadly, their sodas do not come with refills but that was our only negative. The décor is fantastic and you feel like you are in a far fancier restaurant. Other steakhouses usually include some main course options for non beef eaters, but here it's just the $45 halibut. We all liked the nicely flavorful side dishes meant for sharing and would encourage everyone to try those. Oddly, there's this disconnect: The place is very "come as you are" aka Portland casual, with server in jeans, some guests in shorts, etc. That's fine, even good, if you know that in advance or if you're at a fast casual place where you order at a counter, for example. But we didn't know that and we went there for a special occasion so the vibe felt off, thinking others would have also approached it as more of an upscale experience. The place is huge. Massive tent out front along Burnside (sitting in there would make it even more casual) plus the indoor space with bar seating. You probably can make a request for indoors or outdoors when you make a res. Allow extra time for parking there on a neighborhood side street.
