Usually great. Service was typical of college town, very mediocre. Waited quite a while for food. Grilled shrimp poboy was fried, and cheeseburger had no cheese despite server saying they entering it correctly. Bread was stale on poboy, and took almost 20 minutes to add cheese to the burger, which was overcooked. Was hungry so went ahead and ate the poboy . They just dumped the bottom of the bag of chips on the plate. Very disappointing.

A hidden gem just off the square that serves up some amazing food. I came in for lunch and the service was excellent and the vibe is Southern Casual. It seems that they do a lot of to go and catering and from what everyone there was saying, it's top notch.

Shrimp Po' boy

They were pretty busy but the college students running the place did a good job of helping everyone and quickly. The shrimp Po' boy was pretty good but I also got to try the shrimp and grits and they were great. Walking up to the restaurant I thought it was going to be super cool inside but unfortunately the interior was kind of boring. Food - 4 Service - 5 Vibe - 3

I like this restaurant. Located below Nielsen's on the Square you must visit this place. My only time to eat here was on a Sunday for lunch and I wanted to try their fried chicken but it wasn't offered on their special Sunday brunch menu. Not wanting brunch, I opted for the hamburger steak with purple hull peas, green beans and mashed potatoes for about $12. My meal came out in about 10 minutes with some cornbread. The hamburger steak was a round patty with gravy and onions. While not large in size it tasted good. While I thought the peas needed more flavor the green beans had plenty and the mashed potatoes were on par with the green beans. I enjoyed this meal and rated it at a 4. This meat and three meal was on par with Ajax and that's saying a lot. Also on Sundays a one man jazz band plays and he was excellent. It's a good reason to visit on Sundays but then any day this place is open is a good day to stop by. I will return when I'm back in Oxford.

Banks Moore our server, 9/10

I had a great meal at Tallahatchie gourmet. My favorite is the chicken and dumplings. Banks Moore was my server and he was very good.

3 salad sampler!

Food was good. I had my first purple hulled peas. Gannon did a great job with service. It was nice to sit outside. It was a little chilly inside but glad you were open a Monday.

The table had ordered a fried pickles but it was a bit too salty for me. The catfish was great, seemed pretty fresh and it didn't have any metallic taste. The sweet potato casserole was just the right amount of sweet and savory. I was going between the catfish and sweet potato to balance out the flavors. The fried okra was a bit bland and definitely needed the sauce. The service was great - attentive and gave great advice on food options. The interior fits the diner appearance and everything looked pretty clean and tidy. Other people in the party enjoyed their poboys and hash brown casseroles.

Heard we had to try Ajax, the diner, not the soap. We stopped in for lunch before heading to Nashville airport to come home. The diner is about what you'd expect inside. Old, kitschy and full of decor. We sat in a booth an were greeted by a waitress promptly for drink orders. Cokes and waters. They deliver the coke in a neat Ajax cup. I ordered the chicken fried steak. Wife ordered the chicken and dumplings and step son ordered catfish. Everything arrived very quickly and everything was hot and southern deliciousness, except the corn bread. The corn bread was dry and not very good at all. Pretty sure it was yesterday's leftover bread or someone needs to pull it 5 minutes sooner from the oven. Unanimous at the table, Everton e had garb corn bread. No big deal. The chicken fried steak was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Gravy was great and the red beans and rice side was awesome. All great flavors. Wife loved the chicken and dumplings, good flavor and tender chicken. She got a side of sweet potato casserole and loved it. I had a bite and it was delicious for certain. Step son had the fried catfish, he is not a big seafood eater but he absolutely loves the catfish. I had a big piece and it was cooked perfectly and tasted great as well. The staff was outstanding, the service was great and the food was excellent sans the cornbread. Ajax is a neat little diner in the heart of Oxford. It's a little pricey as is everything in this college town, but it was worth the visit.

The patio overlooking the Square has unbeatable views and scenery. Awesome place for an afternoon cocktail. Negatives - they were out of 3 draft beers. I tried to order the pulled pork sandwich and I was informed they don't make it any more and they were in the process of taking it off the menu. The smash burger I got was a joke (see my pictures). My waitress was nice just not very fast. If you are looking for a cool spot for a drink, this works. If you are looking for more of a culinary experience, go some place on the Square.

It was later in the evening, and I wasn't sure how many places would still be open that late elsewhere in the state, so stopping in such an iconic college town felt like the right move. Unfortunately for me--but probably great for business--it happened to be a home game for Ole Miss Rebels baseball, so the entire area was packed. I tried a few places before finally managing to grab a single seat at the very end of the bar at Back 9. The atmosphere was immediately fun and energetic. Between the sports simulators and TVs broadcasting games throughout the space, it felt exactly like the kind of lively college-town sports bar you'd hope to stumble into on a busy game night. The staff was clearly stretched thin because of the crowd, so I don't hold the slower pacing against them. If anything, it reminded me how differently high-volume bars function from city to city. There are probably a few things college-town bars in general could learn from the efficiency of Nashville's Broadway spots, but that's more of an observation than a criticism of this restaurant specifically. The menu is exactly what you'd expect in the best way possible--handhelds, flatbreads, comfort food, and crowd-pleasing bar favorites. I ended up ordering the Chipping Cajun pasta, and honestly, it completely surprised me. The balance between the spice and cream sauce was excellent. The bell peppers, onion, and garlic added depth to the flavor while also giving the dish a nice variety of texture. The seafood was evenly cooked and genuinely delicious throughout. It actually reminded me of one of my favorite dishes back in Nashville at Darfons Restaurant & Lounge, which I definitely wasn't expecting from a busy college-town sports bar. Overall, Back 9 ended up being one of the highlights of my drive through Oxford. If you're passing through town, especially on a game weekend, it's absolutely worth stopping in and trying for yourself.
