Even though it is a group lesson, our kids learned more and advanced faster here than in their private lessons. After a bad experience before coming here, one of our kids was scared to ever swim again. Now he can freestyle the length of a pool. The club has great extremes: It is extremely friendly and warm to the children and also extremely thorough and well thought out, with specific steps and techniques taught at each level. It's very well staffed. There are teachers with the kids in the water, then coaches helping the teachers, and separately life guards as a second pair of eyes on the kids. As a result, my young kids LOVE swimming and both have better technique than most adults, including me. This is worth the drive. Also if your kids start to slow down in progress, repetition helps a ton. Going more than once a week (either the 4x a week summer sessions or 2x a week spring or fall) sped my kids back up.

I have 3 daughters, and 3 months ago only one of them could swim at all. I was really nervous about taking my kids near water because I was constantly anxious about them drowning. When I met Miss Jean three months ago, I told her my summer goal was to have each of my daughters swimming - even (especially) the 3 year old! Three months and a total of 36 lessons later, all three girls are full swimmers who are completely comfortable and confident in the water by themselves. In fact, it only took Miss Jean two months to get them there! Miss Jean is magic with kids. She has so many years of experience, she really just gets kids and swimming. She knows when to push them and when not to. She knows how to sell swimming to them. She knows all the barriers and how to ease her students through them. She connects crazy well with each child. She has oodles of toys with spiffy names (e.g., the "marshmallow stick," the "treasure chest") that the kids just love. I watched her interact with not just my kids, but many other children in countless lessons throughout the summer. Her superpowers are: (1) Patience - like, a ton ton of patience; and (2) Understanding each child individually, and custom-tailoring her approach to each one. I watched her work with children with developmental disabilities, epilepsy, super young children, and older teenagers with appropriate differentiation and so much love. PLUS PLUS she was super flexible about scheduling all summer. She uses a great system of Google-calendar invites. You can cancel anytime up until right before the lesson with no penalty. Between my 3 daughters' other summer camps, family trips, etc. etc. I needed to constantly revise our schedule, and she was a total trooper about it. You schedule when you want, you change the schedule when you want, and you only pay for lessons you attend. Wow. So: She is the swim-whisperer. All her students + families think so, and they are probably not posting about it on yelp for the same reason I didn't want to. ;)

I love the Y and appreciate the amenities available to the community. I have only one concern and…read moreit is that lifeguards do not enforce their basic rules for lap swim. In the last month alone, I have experienced 3 incidents where someone just suddenly appeared in my lane, in front of me while I was swimming. When swimming freestyle, you generally are looking down and if someone is suddenly in front of you, it is difficult to stop in time to avoid a collision. On each occasion, I questioned the person to ask, "where did you come from, how are you in this lane?" All of these swimmers seemed oblivious to the rules, 1: You enter at the deep end only, not in the middle of a lane from an adjoining lane. 2: You make visual or verbal contact with other swimmers when entering their lane and communicate if you're circle swimming or parallel swimming. 3: You never enter in the middle of a lane. I live in fear of a collision because I have 4 small plates holding my cervical spine in place. But the concerning thing to me, is where are the lifeguards. They are literally sitting and watching and never instruct these scofflaws. What are they doing? Another example was the woman doing a backstroke in the "Walking" lanes, literally colliding with bathers and continued even when she was asked to move over to a swim lane by others. I'm just going to say, an accident is bound to happen unless they clean this up, soon. Perhaps it isn't a responsibility of the lifeguards to monitor for these incidents, but I got scolded once for being "too fast," for a slower lane. Made me laugh because I hadn't swam in 5 years and felt it was appropriate for me to start there. So, I know the guards are monitoring something. Let's just hope nothing bad happens, I guess.

I'm extremely disappointed with how the Marin YMCA handled an issue with my paid locker rental…read more I have been paying for both my YMCA membership and a locker, even while I was on maternity leave and had not been able to go to the gym since January. I never froze or canceled my account, and I even recently upgraded my membership so my son could participate in Y Kids. When I returned, I found out that my belongings were gone from the locker I had been paying for. I was never given any notice, warning, email, or phone call that my locker would be emptied or that my items were at risk of being removed. This is especially upsetting because this is not the first time something like this has happened. When I followed up, I was told they looked for my items but could not find them. They offered to cover two months of membership dues as a "gesture of goodwill," but then later said they did not believe staff emptied my locker because no locker audits were conducted. That explanation does not make sense to me. The locker was locked, and access should have been limited to myself and YMCA staff. Since I was not at the gym and did not remove my belongings, there was no clear explanation for how my items disappeared. I paid for a locker with the expectation that my belongings would be secure. Instead, my belongings are gone, and the response I received felt dismissive and lacked accountability. I have since requested to cancel my locker rental. I've supported this YMCA through my paid membership, even during a period when I was not using the gym, so this experience has been incredibly disappointing. Members who pay for lockers should be able to trust that their belongings are safe and that they will receive proper notice and communication before anything is removed. I finally cancelled my membership!

I used to play at RRC when I was younger. It was always one of the more dated tennis clubs in Marin, especially when compared to Bay Club, Harbor Point, and Tiburon Peninsula Club. But lo and behold, RRC recently got a much-needed remodel a few years back. The place now looks like a first-class resort. The pool area, in particular, has benefitted from the facelift. The Olympic size pool is family-friendly, and has plenty of chairs and lawn space for lounging and sunbathing. There are plenty of games/activities to keep kids of all ages happy (ping pong, fussball, etc.). And the club house now boasts a a stellar cafe with decent club grub (sandwiches, salads, etc.). And everyone on the RRC staff (from the check-in gal to the tennis pro to the cafe employees) are friendly and helpful. If tennis is your game (and it's certainly mine), there are nine courts to choose from. Courts 1 - 3 boast spectacular views of Mt. Tam and the rolling hills of San Rafael. Although the scenery can't be beat, the sun can be a bit bright at certain times of the day (making it hard to see the ball). And in the evening, it can get a bit windy. All that being said, RRC has transformed in to one of the finest, family-friendly clubs in Marin.

Each week he gives me techniques to practice during the week. I have seen steady progress in my swimming skills, which has improved my outdoor hiking, and Spin classes. He is non-judgmental, and extremely kind and genuine as a person. I have seen him work with children and older adults with equal care, and consideration. He is a 10 on a 10 scale.

Club is not telling us when they will actually close down. We keep getting emails from management…read moresaying to disregard the rumors, that they don't know when they will close...but sometime in the coming future. In the meantime, those of us who paid to join are left wondering how to plan for when they close down and tear it down to build an entirely new club. We are also seeing lots of deferred maintenance, since they know they are closing sometime in the future to build a new, entirely different club. So much uncertainty is bad for morale, both for members and staff.

Cons: They don't allow pool toys because babies could get ahold of them and choke, and they don't allow nose clips or snorkel masks because they're a drowning hazard, both rules we've never encountered at any of the multitude of other pools we've been to. Some neurodivergent individuals and/or those who deal chronic ear infections or severe allergies may need nose clips to swim so that rule in particular seems unnecessarily restrictive. I also found nothing about nose clips being a drowning hazard when I googled it. Lastly, as we were making a snack bar purchase I watched as a customer came to talk to the staff about an issue and then when the person left to go back to their blanket, facility staff and lifeguards openly joked and laughed about it. Super uncool.

The staff were all very kind and welcoming, and the studio itself was super clean and well maintained. What I really enjoyed about this class is that while you definitely feel the burn and get sore (in the best way!), the instructor made sure we stretched multiple times throughout -- at least three different stretch moments during class. The minute you walk in, you are greeted and everyone is SO friendly. PB San Rafael is my new community. Lots of class offerings so it's easy to find a time that fits with my work schedule. Super clean location, the space is welcoming and just makes my day better when I walk in. The instructors are also top notch! I can't stop raving about PB San Rafael. I started with the 8 classes per month and ended up switching to the unlimited membership before my first month was over, and that was one of my best decisions. Stop in and check out a class, you won't regret it!
