I have had two previous experiences with acupuncture, and believe and trust its benefits. Had a back injury in the early 90's, designated permanent and stationary, and have been anything but, refusing to become stagnant by staying active, but every now and then the back locks up and can slow me down for days. What I will also say, is while in simple terms I understand the healing benefits of acupuncture, Chalita is really great at explaining and providing insight in a way that further supported why I was there, and why I will keep going for regular health benefits. Three weeks ago on February 18 I accidentally poured scalding water on my right hand while dumping boiling pasta water out into the sink. It hurt in the moments immediately after the accident. Then the pain subsided. However I did feel a little stiffness opening and closing my hand. Soon after I met with my primary care Kaiser doctor. She was concerned by my hand's appearance and that it didn't hurt (a sign that the burn could have damaged my nerve endings). So she immediately put a request in for me to see a plastic surgeon about a possible skin graft. She also said it would take a long time to heal. I asked, "How long?" She said, "A long time." I asked, "A month?" She still responded, "A long time." Her response really scared me. She also was concerned about infection and told me to come back in immediately if my wound worsened. Unfortunately the plastic surgeon couldn't see me for several days (8 days post injury). So within that timeframe I went to 3-4 acupuncture treatments from Amie Brooke and Chalita Photikoe at Tamalpais Community Acupuncture. I also took the following supplements: vitamins B, D, E and Selenium. Per my Kaiser doctor I also applied antibiotic ointment while the wound was open, Aquaphor once the wound closed and the skin started peeling, then sunscreen when the peeling stopped and I no longer needed a bandage. By the time I went to my plastic surgery appointment my wound had started closing and the surgeon said he wouldn't need to do a skin graft. Also if my hand kept healing the way it had been he said I also wouldn't need antibiotics. Lastly he said it would take a few more weeks for my wound to completely close. However a couple days after this appointment (10 days post injury) it appeared that all open areas had closed. Now it has been 21 days since the accident and I continue to go to acupuncture 3 times per week. Initially I did so to thwart infection and help the wound close. Now I go to minimize scarring. As you can see from the picture I took of my hand today it looks great. Plus I have 100% feeling in it and no pain. I sent an update to my Kaiser doctor along with the pictures I'm including in this letter. This was her response: "Fantastic news! Incredibly healed without scarring! I am very happy." If it weren't for Tamalpais Community Acupuncture I wouldn't be able to afford to go regularly. And I'm sure I wouldn't have healed as quickly. I'm so grateful for this clinic! read more

I've been seeing Chalita for about six years now, beginning when I was post-partum with my first son. I highly recommend this acupuncture clinic and I see Chalita there. Not only has she helped me heal from many minor and major health and emotional issues, she is so gentle and gifted that the treatments themselves are a joy. I have had a tremendous experience with great success working with Amie Brooke at Tamalpais Community Acupuncture. I visited Amie with constant pain in my Achilles (Achilles Tendinitis of the heel). It was always inflamed, and pretty much stopped me from running at all. It was debilitating. Amie was very open and honest upfront about the treatment and the number of estimated treatments that would be necessary to see improvement - but was confident that it would get better. She was spot on! I couldn't believe that after 2-3 treatments there was improvement, and after 5-6 the pain was pretty much gone. Amie is not only great at Acupuncture, but she is also an athlete, who works with you holistically - focused on your whole body. She can take your pulse and feel what is going on, what may need some work, etc. I shared with Amie my a goal to do my first Sprint Triathlon, and she partnered with me, sharing helpful advice, modifying treatments as necessary, and providing encouragement up to the race day, as well as thereafter. I felt comfortable immediately walking into the office. The music is soothing and the community acupuncture room has comfy loungers. But even more importantly, Amie Brooks helped me better than any other acupuncturist I've ever seen. I started going to Tamalpais Community Acupuncture about 6 or 7 months ago and I absolutely love it!! TCA was my first experience with acupuncture and Chalita made the experience so comfortable and easy. I was a little scared but she put me completely at ease. I originally started treatment because I wanted to get rid of a ganglion cyst on my foot. My podiatrist said the only way to get rid of it was to cut it out - I didn't want to deal with the recovery so I tried acupuncture. Within a few treatments, the cyst was almost gone and completely different in texture. I was so glad I tried acupuncture before resorting to surgery. While being treated for the cyst, I discovered that acupuncture could help me in so many other ways - my digestion, my general circulation, incontinence (ugh - a vaginal birth of an 8.5 baby will do that to you!), stress relief, etc. In May, I slipped and sprained my wrist/fingers - after my sprain, I literally could not grasp my toothbrush and was in tremendous pain. The next morning, I had an acupuncture session and my wrist was immediately 10 times better - I was still in very slight pain, but I could bend/use my fingers and wrist - the effect of acupuncture was truly amazing. I've done acupuncture both in the private room and in the community room and I find both settings to be relaxing and warm. The community acupuncture is SO affordable!! Half the time, I am so relaxed that I fall asleep. I've been treated by all of the practitioners who work there and they are ALL fantastic - kind, warm, professional and lovely women who genuinely listen and care. I was hesitant to try acupuncture again after having a bad experience. However, Amie Brooke has made me a full believer in its benefits and I have every confidence in her as a provider. I had extensive nerve damage on an entire side of my body caused by a stroke. Amie listens to the changes in my body from week to week and is very thoughtful on how each session will vary. I have had fantastic results of less pain and starting to regain feeling. I always leave my session feeling the progress, refreshed, and optimistic. I went for my first treatment 3 months ago. My primary doctor at Kaiser recommended I try acupuncture to relieve the pain from a frozen shoulder, I hate to say I was a bit skeptical but I was willing to try anything at that point. After 2 treatments with Aime (3 days apart) the mobility in my shoulder had increased and the stabbing pains were fading more and more each day. With the acupuncture treatments and exercise my shoulder is almost 100% now. A month ago I mentioned to Chalita about my sleeping problems and night sweats and she said she could help. Low and behold, my night 'issues' disappeared for two weeks. I have gone back two more times and will continue to go every two weeks to control my night sweats and hot flashes. Although I've never gone to the clinic, I've seen Amie Brooke for acupuncture treatments. When other people were being treated at the clinic, I was surprised at what a private, serene environment is was, even though other people were there. I came to Chalita because I wanted to see if Accupuncture could help relieve some of my altitude sickness when I arrive in the mountains and because a friend highly recommended her. As an avid skier for the last thirty years, only in the last 10 years had I suddenly developed altitude sickness. I have taken prescription drugs from my doctor which seemed to help the first few years, but they have given me less relief more recently. Chalita helped me by giving me Chinese herbs before I left and a few treatments of Accupuncture. Afterwards I felt my body starting to acclimate to the altitude even before I arrived in the mountains, just as she said I would feel. I had a much easier time acclimating to the altitude upon arrival in the mountains. Over the first few days, I didn't experience my usual fatigue, nausea and sinus congestion. I had such a more enjoyable trip due to the treatments Chalita offered me. And, was even able to enjoy a glass of wine, something I normally would avoid for fear of feeling worse. I was having some low back stiffness and although I got my back adjusted and had a massage, I couldn't get it to 100%. She explained to me what she saw when she placed the needles into my lower back and noticed some inflammation. What she did, did the trick. The inflammation resolved and I was back to 100%. I've been to many acupuncturists. Chalita is gifted. I was in bed for 4 days, immobile with lower back pain (happens every 2-3 yrs.) Was improving about 20% per day (slowly.) Chalita brought me such relief! I felt her access my meridians in such a direct way that I fell into a gentle trance for about 20 minutes, completely pain free. After the session, I walked out sleepy but relaxed, walking erect for the first time in 4 days. First time there, needed acupuncture and private sessions were all booked. Was nervous about the public community room (huh?) But needn't have been. It's a small, quiet room with 3 comfy chairs that extend. The other 2 visitors were quiet and I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. In the future, I won't even bother with a private session. Went home and cooked dinner (unthinkable that morning.) I first came to community acupuncture for two main concerns, infertility and insomnia. The one hour I spend in the clinic every week feels like a reset button for my whole being. Not only are my physical issues being tended to, but my spirit has a chance to rejuvenate. The care I have received from both Amie and Chalita are outstanding. I have loved going to Tam Acupuncture. I find this therapy works best when you can use it consistently for the needs you are trying to remedy. This option offers success and in an affordable way. I have enjoyed the community aspect of the treatments and have done acupuncture in a number of different offices. The chairs are extremely comfortable, the room is warm and inviting and I find it even more relaxing to be in a warm comfortable chair with cozy blanket, others around sometimes verses a cold hard table were I am left alone for 45 minutes staring at the ceiling. I have worked exclusively with Aimee and she has been thoughtful, insightful and great about listening to my concerns. Scheduling on their website is easy and very flexible.
