Returned this morning and picked up a few desserts. I decided to try the peach mango pie, but it was a bit disappointing. The pie was very flaky, buttery and delicious...but it was 90% pie and 10% filling. The peach mango tasted nice, but there was hardly any inside that I couldn't really taste it at all. It was a big size but all bread and air for $5. I sadly will not be purchasing this again. It was a let down. Macarons were tasty though. read more

I've been coming here for years, and they're always exactly as great as I remember them, if not better! I'm a charter driver, I take students here on field trips and I always stop in when I get the chance! I get the palabok, or the tocilog, or the tapsilog, please excuse my spelling) and they're perfect! the sunny side up egg is just right EVERY time, and the MariMande is sublime! the ube latte keeps me going on my drive to DC, and the macarons they have are a sweet surprise filled with JOY! I've tried a few things here and as a Filipino person (from the same region as the chef), I was excited to try it. The menu is authentic and represents a range of Filipino favorites. But the food just falls flat. I've tried the longsilog and there's undressed mesclun salad (uh, why?), 1 sausage (longganisa), and 1 egg with a ton of rice for $16. You should at least get 2 sausages for that price because no Filipino person eats only 1. Also, they were dry and not flavorful. The pan de sal is flat, hard, and also not tasty -- particularly the ube. And I've had it twice so can't blame a bad batch. Lumpia and pancit were fine, and not noteworthy. Lumpia both fried and "damp" were excellent. Shrimp pancit was good but needed more flavor. Filipino spaghetti was sad--it was like noodle soup and not at all what we had expected. Good part was it was the only place in the market that had seating--we went on a wildly packed Monday mid-afternoon when it seemed like there had to be a major convention in town or everyone who was in line for the Wannamaker light show came over before or after for food. Had the best Filipino food! Newly opened Tambayan inside the Reading Terminal Market. The owner is super nice, friendly, and passionate; I loved her energy! The food was so delicious and fresh! Please, if you are in downtown go and visit, you will not regret! My friend and I ordered way too much food, but they were so good we kept on eating. We did walk 8 miles so all is well We ordered tapsilog, pancit, ube fries, turon, pandesal, and halo halo. My friend is Filipina and knows her pancit, she loved the pancit here. Tapsilog was so fresh tasting, and unlike other Filipino places both the meat and garlic rice weren't overly greasy, but had balanced flavours. I liked the combination of cheese on ube fries, turon was good, but it kind of lacked something (cannot tell you what it was lacking though). Ube pandesal had cheese in the center and was so flavourful, if I am not careful I can easily eat multiple pandesals, and halo halo was not too sweet, but wished they added more fillings. I hope this place can stay inside the Reading Terminal for a long time, and truly showcase Filipino food. All the workers at Tambayan were helpful and friendly. read more

tl;dr this RTM vendor offers an approachable foray into Filipino cuisine, but still appears to be adjusting to its recent opening When it was announced that Reading Terminal Market would be welcoming a Filipino vendor to its historic ranks, I could barely contain my excitement. I passed by the in-construction stall a few times over the summer until finally having the opportunity to give them a try. The restaurant itself is tucked deep in the central area of the Market, near the bathrooms. The stall is painted with vibrant colors and features 2000s hip hop on its plasma screen. The U-shaped space hosts diner-style seating on 2 sides, and a pastry counter on the other. The wooden stools are slightly too tall for comfort and bereft of footrests. The marble counter is decked with crates of sauces and accompaniments. We order the Filipino BBQ (with pork), the Filipino Spaghetti, and a Pandesal. The pork was flavored with a classic sweet-and-salty, soy sauce-based marinade, then skewered and grilled to-order. Served beside vinegar and sweet banana ketchup, the meat was the highlight of our meal. It was served beside a dry and bland mound of "garlic" rice. The spaghetti adhered to common Filipino adaptations, including sweetened tomato sauce, sliced sausages, and grated cheddar cheese on top. But apart from these aspects, the dish itself reminded me of quick pasta dishes my family would whip up, with brand-name noodles and store-bought sauce. The purple pandesal was stuffed with a mild cheese and lightly toasted. Of note, it was moderately denser than standard American dinner rolls and tasted vaguely of ube. Portions were enough to leave you content, but not stuffed. Service erred on below-average. Our waitress seemed flustered from the outset and was occasionally snappy. Also, we had to gently remind her about the forgotten pandesal. Of note, our entrees were prepared at drastically different times (~10 min apart), since the spaghetti was pre-prepared while the BBQ was made-to-order. Tambayan is an approachable introduction to Filipino grinds but may prove to be too safe for the already initiated. At $30 (after tax and tip), Tanbayan is on the pricier side for Reading Terminal. During our visit, it was clear that the staff are adjusting to their recent opening. Our overall experience was probably 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up with hopes that Tambayan will work through these new-restaurant kinks, and because I am pleased to see an eclectic option added to the Reading Terminal scene. read more

If you are in the mood for quick Filipino food, I have had multiple dishes there that have been very, very good. Eating at the counter and sometimes pose a challenge because you are, of course, in the middle of Reading terminal market. Sometimes I have no choice, most of the time I opt to bring my meal home. It was lunchtime and there was an intoxicating aroma coming from their grill. Looking the menu, it seemed a bit limited and some items like the Lumpia were $11 for a combo of 2 small rolls and rice. I wish they had an option to buy individual lumpia. As I approached the counter there were 2-3 people who asked if I was ready to place an order. I thought, wow, they are really eager in the front of the house. Unfortunately, the service went downhill from there. Once the order was taken, it was like they forgot about the order. Two other people who sat at the counter after I had placed my order got their order before mine. The food looked good and the pork tasted fantastic, especially with the dipping sauce provided. It can be a little pink but is very tender and not raw. The scoop of yellow rice on the other hand seemed like it had been scooped a little bit ago and had the outer layer had dried and hardened. The rest of the rice had a good texture but not much flavor. I do not know if that is a traditional accompaniment but I would have preferred a more flavorful option. Glad to see Halo Halo as a dessert option but did not have time to order one primarily due to the delay in getting my lunch. So I ordered some macarons (5 for $12) - I got Ube and mango but the mango almost tastes like vanilla and I did not get any mango flavor. It took a while to get my check and took even longer to pay via credit card since they only have one handheld terminal and it was malfunctioning. We tried Tambayan in Reading Terminal today for lunch. The food is delicious but is a bit pricey, however we were excited to try a new a Filipino Restaurant as there are so few in Philly! This establishment is a misrepresentation of Philippine Cuisine. NEGATIVE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE! It's nowhere near Filipino. Sure they used the word "Tambayan" to make them look authentic Filipino. The food IS NOT. I tried their food today, August 4, 2024. YUCK! GROSS! I ordered from TAMBAYAN , hoping to enjoy some authentic Filipino cuisine. Unfortunately, my experience was deeply disappointing. My order consisted of Adobo, Pancit Palabok, Spamsilog, and Mango juice, and it left much to be desired at a cost of approximately $50. Adobo: The sauce was runny and flavorless, resembling bland chicken broth with brown food coloring and a splash of oil. It lacked the rich, savory taste that is characteristic of genuine Filipino Adobo. Pancit Palabok: While it may have looked somewhat correct, the taste was strikingly similar to Pho, which is perplexing given it is a completely different dish. This was simply unpalatable. Spamsilog: This dish, which should be relatively straightforward to prepare, was mishandled as well. Any -SILOG does not use balsamic vinegar! My gosh!The Spam, eggs, and rice were below expectation, indicating a fundamental lack of care or skill in preparation. Mango juice: This was perhaps the most disappointing part of my meal. It did not have the fresh, tropical flavor that one expects from mango juice--tasted like water with a hint of Tang juice and yellow food coloring. It was another letdown. The quality of the meal was grossly inadequate. This place is definitely NOT authentic Filipino food, and I am extremely dissatisfied with what was served. I expected a meal that was prepared with authenticity, which was far from what I received. I hope that the owner(s) takes this feedback seriously and works to improve the quality of their dishes. As a lover of Filipino cuisine and as a Filipino, my experience was deeply disappointing, and I cannot recommend this establishment to others, PERIOD. 3/18/24, Noontime. We went to visit Reading Terminal Market and found this one special place. Simple but delicious Filipino dishes on the menu. Must try are the breakfast options. I saw one next to me and the serving is very good amount. I ordered Pancit with shrimps and Fried Lumpia, both are delicious. Pancit is served a bit watery (we call "ma-sabaw"), which I understand so the dish does not dry out, and pairs well with lemon squeezed on top and a dash of fish sauce. Reading Terminal Market is very busy during lunch hour, seating is a 'wait and grab your table' type in the center of the place. Its a good thing Tambayan has their own counter seating to accommodate patrons. read more

I tried to order the small size $4 but they only had the large one. You won't be missing anything, just order something else. - Fried lumpia $11 (3 small lumpia) - Insipid! We were VERY disappointed! I have been following their IG page, so they can update us on when is their big day. We were so excited to try their food and I also wanted my family to experience the hospitality and friendliness that filipinos are known for. My husband is Chinese and loves filipino food. If it's just him who will order off the menu, he wouldn't know what's good and what's not. Unless you tell him more about a certain dish. When we arrived at their spot there was only one customer who was eating at the table counter. We thought there's gonna be a long line of people since it's the grand opening. But even though there was just one customer at that time, not one of their employees greeted us nor ask, if we wanted to dine in or order a take out?. I grabbed the menu which was laying down the counter and started looking for what to order. Standing in front of me was a lady, who I thought were in charge of managing the place. She was busy covering lumpia and macaroons with Saran Wrap. At that time, I couldn't decide what to order since I saw a few of my favorite dishes in the menu. That lady didn't even bother to stop what she was doin to ask if I have any question? or maybe give us some suggestions like a good business should be. I honestly felt of just walking away and bring my business somewhere else that it will be appreciated. Fast forward, got my topsilog but not the ube pandesal and there's no free slice of ube cake given to us like what they announced in IG. As I was eating my food, my husband asked one of the employee if they validate parking ticket? and she told him to go to the Nuts store. The machine at the nuts store they use to validate ticket were broken. So now, we have to buy food from another food joint just so we can get our parking ticket validated. After I ate my food my husband asked if we are getting a free slice of ube cake?since we dine in. One of the employee went and asked the lady who took my order, the same lady who was busy Saran wrapping lumpia and macaroons if we can have a slice of cake? My husband was watching her pause and think for a couple of seconds like she is hesitant whether or not we can have a cake lady please! First of, if we were one of the first 50 customers who dine in and she knows that. Do we really need to ask if we can get a free slice of cake? Is that even a question?! I guess they don't just give it unless you asked for it. Second of all when she took my order she was aware that the ube pandesal that I ordered and paid for in advance is not even baked yet. I saw a tray of the unbaked Ube pandesal laying right next to her as she was taking my order. After I ate my food they informed me that the pandesal dough still needs time to rise before they can even bake it. She should've told me that right then and there and it wouldn't be a problem but she didn't. At this point I just wanted a refund for the pandesal. I have two babies with me at that time and I couldn't afford to wait for the dough to rise and bake. Finally, there was this nice lady that I am assuming is the owner. Who happened to be at the register at the time when I was asking for a refund. She asked me if I wanted a pandan pandesal instead? but we were so ready to leave that place. I was telling her about our experience with her employee who took my order. And that same lady had the nerve to cut us off in the middle of us talking. While her boss was trying her hardest to turn our experience around. She were asking her a question that I personally think could've wait till me and her boss are done talking smh ‍. Anyway regardless of our experienced at tambayan I just wanted to say to the owner that I appreciate her apologies so much and more power to her business. Feedback about the topsilog it wasn't that good as I expected it to be. The meat were under seasoned, the garlic rice not so garlicky. I guess the egg is the best part of the dish since it's cooked just right. Cannot say anything about the ube pandesal since it didn't made its way to the table the Ube cake they gave away was dry and it had very little ube frosting. tl;dr -- As a Filipino, I was disappointed, but I'm still rooting for their growth! I really really wanted to enjoy Tambayan, but no matter how hard I tried and the longer I waited, the more I realized my expectations were far from the reality I experienced. Okay so let me start from the beginning. My friends and I are the most indecisive people ever. We were going back and forth between breakfast places to grab a bite, but of course on a Sunday morning (rain is pouring) all the breakfast places were booked. RTM it is! We stumbled on Tambayan while roaming the market and realized that this was the place that had just recently opened and it was the same place that was all over my Instagram feed a few weeks ago. My friend and I were so excited to try this place out, but unfortunately, that excitement was soon turned into disappointment. Food rundown: - Longsilog (2/5): Longganisa is my favorite Filipino breakfast food and I love how differently it's prepared between restaurants. Unfortunately, this longganisa was burnt and tasted exactly like the ones I heat up at home. Best part was the egg, though! Cooked great on top of the rice. Side of fresh veggies come with it too which was a pleasant surprise. - Ube fries (1/5): I recommend against trying these. They are densely cut, therefore they aren't cooked completely through. - Mango juice (3/5): Definitely make sure this drink has ice in it! Our server served it straight up and it was a little too concentrated. Very much tasted like a drink form of mango flan. - Pandesal (4/5): This was the highlight of my meal. The pandesal has cheese in the middle! Make sure to have it heated up if you plan on enjoying it there and then. Otherwise it will be hard and difficult to eat. To the untrained taste buds, I can understand if these dishes would be new, exciting, and flavorful, but my Filipino taste buds could recognize where things were lacking in Tambayan's dishes. Let's not forget, I waited for around 20 minutes to get my food AFTER my friend ordered and got her food and waited 15 minutes for her food. Our service was also not the best, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. I have hope for Tambayan. I really do. Plus they just opened. I have been following Tambayan for weeks on social media and in the news patiently awaiting their opening. I finally had a day off and a chance to ride into the city to check them out for breakfast. I am no stranger to Filipino food. I've been fortunate enough to have taken two trips to the Philippines and spent some years as a nurse in California were many of my Filipino coworkers would bring in home cooked food almost daily. I ordered the longsilog and fried lumpia. The longsilog is a Filipino sausage that is on the sweeter side. They were crisp on the outside and tender and delicious once bitten into. It came with two perfectly cooked sunny side up eggs on top of garlic rice. I love garlic rice, and the serving I got was on point. The lumpia were bigger than ones I've had in the past. Fried to perfection and tasted amazing, especially accompanied with the sauce. The service was prompt and friendly. I got a chance to chat with Kathy for a little bit. Her story is truly amazing and humbling. You can tell she takes pride in what she does and it shows - the food was incredible. I'm happy to see that Filipino food is starting to make a name for itself in Philadelphia, and with Tambayan and Kathy behind it, I have no doubt the city will take even more notice. Of note, I'm pretty surprised to have seen some of the one star reviews. It is a new restaurant working out the flow in the forever busy Reading Terminal Market. Woah, very very authentic Philippine food. I was a little surprised to see only a one star review for this establishment. This place has only been opened for 8 days and you can still they are still working out the kinks with being a new business. I try not to be harsh off of one experience. With THAT being said, I really loved the food here. We ordered the bbq skewers and menudo. REALLY delicious and flavorful. The owner said it is all her own cooking and recipes from her grandparents. I would add the portions are a little on the smaller end - but perfect size for lunch (generally every place gives you WAY too much food in reading terminal that puts you into a food coma). They have a pretty lo dessert menu that I would love to try. Also got their match green tea! I loved it, sweet but not overly sweet - and perfect to go beverage. It was kinda hard to find but it's tucked away in the back the back corner of the terminal. Way less chaotic than the front. They have their own seating. I got the longsilog which was disappointing. The garlic fried rice was mushy and sad to say, no essence of garlic at all. The sausage was lacking in flavor. After the first bite the rest of the meal was just bland. Their food was prepared and stored like cafeteria style. This could be the reason why the rice is so mushy. It wasn't stored in a rice cooker but a steamer. The service was a bit slow even with little to no people. It seems the only thing cooked fresh is the egg and I believe the skewers from what I saw. They did have a good selection of various Filipino dishes but we opted for the breakfast dishes (silog), pork BBQ and pancit. I heard about their recent opening at Reading Terminal Market and was excited to finally try it. I ordered a few things: ube, turon, Filipino spaghetti and pandan pandesal Ube (3/5), small size container is $10 The ube is a good consistency and I'll be happy to eat it but the ube flavor itself is not 100%. To be fair, I haven't had 5/5 ube outside of the Philippines. Turon (3.5/5), 3 pcs for $7 The turon are the size of fat lumpiang shanghai, the filling was mixed with something else, likely jackfruit. I did enjoy the consistency of the filling but thought it could have more banana. The outside was not coated in usual caramelized sugar, so it wasn't as sweet and didn't have that extra crunch. It came with a milky dipping sauce, like a thinned out condensed milk, that helped add more sweetness. I did like that these were fried to order, so you know they haven't been sitting out. Filipino spaghetti (3.5/5), 1 serving $10 This has the sweetness and the hotdog slices that Filipino spaghetti is known for. Even the cheese they generously sprinkled on top had the right type of melt. It is not as sweet as Jollibee spaghetti, and it is a thinner sauce. It tasted like a family recipe made with love, but didn't wow me. Pandan pandesal (1/5), $2 per piece They are of a medium size and the color is beautiful. The middle is filled with cheese. Unfortunately I also found completely raw dough in the middle. Overall, I am still very excited that we have Filipino representation in Reading Terminal Market. I think the flavors will likely be palatable and a solid introduction to customers that are new to Filipino food. However, I wish the flavors and textures were dialed up a bit more to make them craveable. I thought the prices were fair, and the service was quick (I went at around 10am on a Saturday). There was a non-Filipino customer who was reading the menu and the owner was talking him through each dish patiently, so I hope this will be a good education for Philly locals and tourists alike. read more

I came to Tambayan yesterday and picked up a couple of pork noodle dishes that I thought were delish. While I waited for my food the workers were so nice and friendly to me. I did not eat there but there were a bunch of people eating at the counter when I was there. The workers told me they had only been open for 9 days. I go to Reading Terminal Market often to food shop and plan to pick up food again from Tambayan. read more

I was surprise and excited to see that there was Filipino food here. The ladies that served me Chan and Eliana were super awesome however I was disappointed on how the food tasted. The pansit palabok tasted plain & lacked flavor, the fried lumpia was crunchy and hot but also lacked flavor, the adobo was rich in flavor, too salty, needs more garlic, it was served with too much sauce. My rice was swimming in sauce. The taste of the food need improvement but the ladies attitude and service was awesome! read more

I was missing Filipino food and was having a day with my daughter and we decided to go to Reading Terminal. This place is amazing with so much food but I knew we needed to have some Comfort food and so we ordered lumpia to eat at the counter and brought home some breakfast dishes. We also ordered taro drinks and those were amazing and had some taro macarons as well and those were outstanding. The customer service was also pretty outstanding. Kathy and her wonderful team catered my farewell brunch for our wedding this past weekend and they did a fabulous job! Working with Kathy was incredibly easy. We dropped by their store in Reading Terminal Market to inquire and then coordinated via email from there. When we came Sunday morning to pick up our order, everything was ready for us, packaged and presented beautifully, and placed in large boxes so we could transport it easily. Kathy herself even helped us cart the boxes out to our car. She was so excited for us, she included extra food at no additional charge because she wanted to make sure we had more than enough food. Our guests LOVED the brunch and could not stop raving about how wonderful and thoughtfully presented everything was. We ordered the Filipino BBQ, Fried Lumpia, an assortment of her incredible macarons, ube pandesal filled with cheese, and 50 individual portions of longsilog which included longanisa (a filipino sweet sausage), garlic rice, two sunny side up fried eggs cooked perfectly, and a small salad. The portions were perfect and our guests had their fill. We even had lots of leftovers (which we have since polished off). I went back to Tambayan a couple days later to give her back the large boxes and also decided to have breakfast. Kathy and her staff were so excited to see me and hear how the wedding and brunch went. I shared pictures while enjoying their Tapsilog breakfast platter-which was perfectly portioned for me! Kathy shared her inspiring story with me of growing up with nothing and getting to where she is today. Idk, maybe I wasn't super impressed because I've walked by a million times and everything looked so delicious that I had eagerly been waiting my opportunity to finally try it that it got over hyped in my head. Got brunch here. Got the ube fries which were a bit overdone and mostly just overcooked bits. The fried lumpia were the stars of the meal with nice flavor and nice crispy exterior. We also got the longsilog and unfortunately I just found it not very flavorful. The rice was well cooked but a bit bland, and even the sausage needed something else. There were 3 different sauces that came with the meal but there was no explanation as to what went with which dish which was unfortunate. Finally got the taro drink which was pretty good and a very unique flavor and not too sweet. Everyone working there was super nice. Service was quick. You can't help but root for them because its clearly a very important business and thing for them. Prices were reasonable. Maybe I'll be back to try the desserts, but the savory dishes unfortunately didn't do it for me. read more

The staff is pleasant and the food is delicious. The pork BBQ skewers had a lot of flavor. The palabok was excellent.

As we were driving home from South Philly, we decided to have Filipino food since we haven't had that in a quite a while. After searching on-line, we came upon this place in RTM. Since it was new, we decided to give it a try. A little background, my wife and I spent many years in the Philippines and we've eaten at some high end places as well as corner pop-ups, street food, and home-cooked meals. So, we're well acquainted with what good Filipino food tastes like. We were hoping for some nostalgia as we looked over the menu and ordered a bunch of stuff. We ended up ordering $120 worth of stuff. Considering how much we spent, quantity-wise, it was very disappointing. We could have spent half that in Chinatown just a few blocks away and gotten a whole lot more food. Once we got home, we tried everything. Short story - nostalgia didn't happen. We closed our eyes and tried to imagine the Philippines as we ate the food, but nothing happened. In fact, I have no idea what the food was supposed to taste like since it most definitely didn't taste like anything we've had in the Philippines. We should have picked other places in South Jersey instead. Won't be back for sure. read more

Amazing service and friendly smiles! I love the home cooked meals and love the all day breakfast! Filipinos have always been known for their hospitality and this place definitely exemplifies it! My childhood friend use to make longsilog for me so when I saw it on their menu I definitely had to order it and I wasn't let down! read more

I rarely post any review but the experience was so bad I felt I have to voice my disappointment. I used the TooGoodToGo to try this place, and it was a huge regret. They only gave you a small container of food compared to the other place that gives you so much for the same deal. My 2 "surprised" bags were 1 for the rice with sausage (with all rice and 2 small sausage) and the other was clear noodle. The rice was uncooked, the sausage was very dry. The noodle was just vegetable and very soggy (wasn't even a full container). I don't mind if it's just a little bit of food but the quality was so horrible. How could they serve this at a restaurant ? This place is a nightmare and beyond ridiculous. It is so bad that I was angry at myself for trying this place. I learned my lesson and will never order from here again. read more
