I'm usually a very picky eater but I'm working on broadening my taste buds. This is a must have spot for my husband. His fav dish there is the charbroiled pork Bun. Most recently I tried the charbroiled pork plate with jasmine rice. And that pork is phenomenal! Im not sure what the tiny little soup is they give you with the rice plate. But I love it. And their eggrolls are the best I've ever had anywhere. The only downfall is they only serve canned sodas. But I can get over it. Def a must try if you love Vietnamese food! read more

Sunday night I wanted Vietnamese food and after checking Yelp, I discovered that my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices were all closed. Thwarted! With further investigation, I discovered that Tan Dinh was open. Yay! The menu is huge! Almost worringly so, but I stuck with the one page veggie menu and we got tofu spring rolls which were fine. I liked that the peanut sauce was bit spicier than usual. Then I got tamarind tofu bun (next time I'll ask for extra sauce), which was seriously so huge that I couldn't finish it at lunch today. E got the spicy tofu with fried rice cakes. Everything was tasty and fast and super cheap. While Tan Dinh may not be my first choice, they are definitely a spot I would visit again. read more

ATTENTION: WANK ALERT! It is a rare occasion that I forge across the Mississippi River (I actually just drove across the bridge and didn't actually forge) and visit the Westbank (aka the wank). I have nothing against the wank. It's just that I live and work on the eastbank and have very few friends or relatives on the wank. But I digress. It was 2:30 on a Saturday afternoon and we had not eaten lunch yet. All of a sudden, I was craving Vietnamese food and headed straight for Tan Dinh. (Actually we went to Pho Tau Bay first, but it was too crowded and we had our 8 month old in tow). But I digress again. Having eaten here twice before, I knew this would be a solid choice and the perfect opportunity for me to write a review upon completion. Since we didn't arrive until 3:00 PM, the place was nearly empty, and there were only 10-12 people in the entire restaurant; which looks as if it could seat 120 people at full capacity. We ordered the shrimp spring rolls (aka summer rolls) with peanut sauce. If you are unfamiliar to Vietnamese fare, the spring rolls are wrapped in a moistened rice paper which is stuffed with rice vermicelli, herbs, lettuce, cucumbers and in our case, shrimp. They are served chilled or at room temperature and are never fried. The peanut sauce is sweet and meant to be used for dipping. The spring rolls were good and I have no complaints, but they were not spectacular. To get the best bang for our buck, and also to get the most food samplings, we opted to split two different dishes. It would almost be a sin to go to a Vietnemese restaurant and not order a bowl of Pho. For all you meat and potato eaters, pho is a Vietnamese soup dish consisting of a flavorful broth, rice noodles, herbs and meat. (Meat would include round steak, brisket, tendon and tripe). There's a flavor in Pho that's hard to put a handle on, but I think it's a Vietnamese cinammon.The dish also comes with a plate of garnishes that usually includes onion, chili peppers (jalapeno), Thai basil, bean sprouts,cilantro and lime. (I use them all and top it off with sriracha sauce. We opted for the combo bowl of rare steak and brisket and it was enough for two normal people; but I'm not nornal. I've had the tendon before and enjoyed it, but the texture of the tripe is a little too exotic for me. Again, the Pho was not spectacular, but I would definitely say that it was above average. Kudos for not being too salty, which a lot of Pho restaurants tend to do. Now, for the piece de resistance, we ordered a Bahn Mi sandwich. If you don't know what a Bahn Mi sandwich is, I suggest you go get one ASAP. "Bahn Mi is a Vietnamese term for all kinds of bread, or more specifically the baguette, that was introduced by the French during Vietnam's colonial period" [Wiki quote]. For lack of a better term, this is the Vietnamese equivalent of a New Orleans po-boy. The crispy exterior of the bread is quickly breached to reveal an airy almost fluffy interior, and the taste rivals that of every bakery that I am familiar with. The sandwich is made with your choice of meat (we had chargrilled pork and liver pate) along with Daikon (oriental radish), fresh cucumber, cilantro and pickled carrots. There are many different meat options and even a tofu option for vegetarians. Don't knock the liver pate spread until you try it. I actually hate liver, but loved the taste of the pate spread on my sandwich. All I can say is WOW! We finished our meal with two boba teas to go. I opted for the Thai iced tea flavor but it had a little too much crushed ice for me. Perhaps they should have blended it a little longer. Other than that, this was a great lunch all the way around; and was worth the 15 minute trip and $1.00 toll to the wank. read more

Tan Dinh As an American born of Vietnamese descent, I feel that it's not only my obligation but it's my privilege to share my heritage with the rest of the world. In New Orleans, a city with food richly influenced by the French, it's only fitting that the French also heavily influenced the cooking of Vietnam! And in New Orleans one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants is found on the West Bank in Gretna, Tan Dinh! Vietnamese cuisine can best be described as Thai meets French with a Chinese flair. The food at Tan Dinh is as close as it gets to authentic home cooking for me. The menu and selection leaves you with enough variety so that you never get bored of the food! They serve everything from goat to fish to pork.. Delicious soups and broths such as Pho (beef or chicken noodle soup) are always available. They also have many different rice dishes like the Lemongrass Chicken (one of my personal favs) and pictured is the Com Suon Nuong Bi Cha Trung (Char grilled Pork Chop with Shredded Pork and a Fried Egg). For the quality and portion size, the price is never an issue. You be the judge and taste it for yourself! The location is very nice, pretty dimly lit, and the staff were very friendly. We ordered an order of spring rolls, and an order of egg rolls. Both came with 4 each, which was perfect for my party of 4. The spring rolls were really good, and the eggrolls were really crispy and great. The pho was huge in proportion and the amount of tendon given was exciting. I got the Pho Dac Biet (the special pho), whilst my dad and aunt got the chicken Pho. This place serves overpriced Vietnamese food. It's very nicely decorated and the restaurant provides a nice dining space, but the food itself isn't that great. I ordered the banh cuon. The key to good banh cuon is the fish sauce. There are different ways to make fish sauce for different dishes. The fish sauce here was not right for the banh cuon and it ruined the meal. My FAVORITE Vietnamese restaurant ever! And my momma can cook the best Vietnamese food. I love this place when my boyfriend is craving pho. I usually get the goi cuon thit nuong (chargrilled pork spring rolls), bun thit nuong trieu tien (Korean beef short ribs vermicelli), and my boyfriend gets whatever pho dish he's feeling. We always enjoy our meal. The service has improved tremendously through the years. The spring rolls are yummy, and made fresh. They are big in size and can easily be used as an entree. The short ribs are the best in the area! You get a large portion for an affordable price. I love that they have scissors at the table. My boyfriend really enjoys the pho, I don't know because I only eat pho at home. (Yes, I'm a brat.) I've also had the chicken wings (all variations), the steamed buns, and the boba (different ones). All of which I thoroughly enjoyed! I'm just a creature of habit so I order the same things mostly. Side note: If you're following a ketogenic lifestyle, dishes can be made to accommodate that. I've been going to Tan Dinh for over a decade. I used to come here only for certain individual plates/entrees i.e. rotisserie chicken with rice (com ga roti), lemon grass chicken with rice (com ga nuong xa), beef stew with bread to dip (banh mi bo kho), lemon pepper pork ribs with rice (com suon rang muoi). However, lately my family and I have been coming at least once a week for their family meals! Tan Dinh has totally stepped up their family dishes! I crave their Canh Chua Ca (hot and sour soup with catfish)!!! It's so good! Their muc rang muoi (salt/pepper calamari) is DELICIOUS as well!!! SO seasoned and flavorful! Their Ca Kho To comes in a huge clay pot and is pretty tasty! We also recently ordered their tofu (they have it in a variety of preparations) and it was pretty delectable! Way to go Tan Dinh! After a trip to Hong Kong Market and then finding out that Pho Tau Bay was closed, I noticed Tan Dinh on the drive and made a highly illegal several turns to make it to the entrance. My friend and I walk in and the first thing I noticed, to be honest, was that there were no Vietnamese people in sight. The interior is large and bright, well-decorated, and... it doesn't smell like anything. It doesn't have that Vietnamese restaurant smell, of MSG and days-brewed stock. Hm, I think to myself. Okay. Tan Dinh has a huge menu, phone-book status, and when in doubt, I usually fall back to my staple Pho Tai Gau (rare steak and brisket). My friend got her pho with tendon, and we shared an order of Cha Gio (eggrolls). Pho - Very Americanized. The broth was too sweet and the portion size was ENORMOUS. However... a lot of mediocrity... is still mediocre. I tried balancing the broth with Sriracha, which didn't really work at all. It did come with a lot of veggies, however, including cilantro and mint, with the usual basil, sprouts, and lime. I actually couldn't force myself to finish the entire bowl. Cha Gio - Bubbly crispy rice paper, rather than the wheat-based eggroll wrapping paper, was a plus! Minus... the eggrolls were too large and weren't cut in half. They were full of a mediocre filling of some sort of pork byproduct; barely any shrimp or vegetables to round it out. Bland, bland, bland. The nuoc mam (fish sauce) came in a bottle at the table (weird, right?) and was also too sweet. Later on in the day, some Vietnamese people came in and, since I'm creepy, I noticed that none of their tables actually ordered the pho. One table had squab that looked delicious. I loved this restaurant, and my boyfriend loved it even more. He went here with his coworker and was back in 3 days for more. The food was delicious. The egg rolls, omg. I don't know how to describe it, except you know how most egg rolls look the same with that tan-ish outer crunchy wrapping? These were wrapped in something heavenly, fresh, and put all other egg rolls to shame. The dipping sauce was so unique and wonderful. I had the fried short ribs and white rice, while the bf got the wings he couldn't stop talking about. I love rice, but the rice patties are smart when eating finger food. We ordered two banh mi's to bring home, and next day they were still fresh and yummy. The menu is large, the portions are hefty, and I was very pleased with my food. I've been eating here off and on for about 10 years. I always get the brisket Pho and my wife gets the shrimp Pho. It's excellent most of the times. We did notice a bit of a change in the flavor a few months ago. I speculate that it might have been because some of the cooks who normally make it wasn't there. Either way things are back to normal because the last 2 times I've ordered the flavor is back to full affect. Their Lemongrass chicken wings are excellent. I also love their Chargrilled pork Spring rolls. I love their Korean Short Rib plate and their Kimchi. My wife loves their fried egg rolls. Their chargrilled pork meal is delicious as well. DO NOT try their Salmon meal because it's awful. I repeat DO NOT try their Salmon meal. I tried that meal about 4 years ago and it wasn't good. Out of curiosity I tried it earlier this year (before the pandemic) and it was even worse than I remembered before. Outside of that meal I haven't had anything I didn't like. This is another great place to get vietnamese noodles while on the westbank. I always tend to get the same things (spring rolls and bun in the warm weather and spring rolls and pho when it's colder out) because these things bring me joy. The bun here is a dollar or more higher than some of the other spots I usually go to, but it is because they give you a much larger portion, too much in fact. I would prefer a small option for less dollars (just me). On my last visit I decided to branch out and try the fried sticky rice patties with salt & pepper crispy ribs. Let's just say that I'll go back to my usual for the next visit. That dish was way to heavy and greasy for my taste. Lesson learned. I have been here with a large group before and they handled us well. Love this place! The chargrilled pork anything, especially spring rolls, are fabulous. The tamarind wings are amazing, we do them as an appetizer usually. I've noticed that the prices have crept up, and while the food seems to be of good quality, it is a bit pricey. I've heard complaints about the service but I just see it more as they like to leave you alone to eat, so they don't check on you a lot. Any time I need anything I just wave someone over and they are more than eager to help. If you like Vietnamese food, this is a place you have to try at least once. Much better on this visit! They have finally added banh mi, which was one of my criticisms last time. I got a fried shrimp banh mi. The bread, shrimp, cucumber, jalapeno, carrots and cilantro were excellent, but was slightly marred by the warm yellow mayonnaise they used. It made the shrimp soggy. It also tasted warm, which was a little disconcerting. It looked like it was starting to turn "clear," like mayo does when it's been sitting out. I also had a really neat and tasty drink called soda sua hot ga. They serve you a glass with condensed milk at the bottom and a raw egg yolk sitting on top of that, and a bottle of club soda and a glass of ice on the side. You mix up the condensed milk and the egg yolk, then add the soda, stir it some more and pour it into the glass of ice. It was delicious and had a custard-y flavor. My friend had the curry shrimp with sticky rice. The sticky rice cakes were browned and crispy. The entire plate had a fragrant aroma. I didn't get to taste it but my friend enjoyed it. She also mentioned she saw Chef John Besh and his family eating there the last time she was there. That's a pretty good seal of approval! read more

First of all let me say that in this day after Covid and inflation I do understand the need to increase pricing and do what you can to streamline. We have been going to Tan Dinh for several years and we have enjoyed it everytime until today. The restaurant is basically now like a cafeteria... you get a table, have to either do an order via the QR code or go to the counter (which I wondered why there was a line there until I saw the QR code) ... I have no issue doing it via QR but it is in Gretna and there is terrible internet in Gretna. After you order you go get your own drinks except for bottled water. We ordered our usual and it came out wrong . The menu has been streamlined and to be honest it's just not the same. Food is still good but if I wanted to go to a cafeteria I would have gone to Piccadilly. When it was time to leave a tip I did but not a large one as I did all the work other than cooking it and bringing the incorrect order to the table. And no longer are they using plates and bowls, most things are in disposable dishes, which also shows they have eliminated a dishwasher. We will obviously be back but are hopeful they will make some improvements. I hate to see it slide down ... for 2 people to eat and drink we spent over 50.00.... Not sure what kind of skin they use. It's yellow. I don't like that it didn't come with lettuce to wrap it in. And no dipping sauce. The fish sauce on the table is not for egg rolls. I don't really understand why this place has gotten so many negative reviews. I guess I read lots of it's-not-as-good-as-it-used-to-be sentiments. Well, yesterday was the first time I visited this restaurant as I was in the area with C (looking at cars in fact so that I may be able to drive here myself some time in the future) and I had previously mentioned to him that I wanted to go to a Vietnamese place on the West Bank so that's what we did while we were out there. I was trying to figure out whether to try this place or Pho Tau Bay, because, you know, PTB has a cult-ish following. But a friend had told me that she thought this place was better. Well, we were going to try PTB anyway, mostly because it had better Yelp reviews. But they were closed (of course I bother to scan through the reviews but not check which days they are open), so I decided that this is fate's way of sending me to Tan Dinh and we drove half a mile to this place. We had no problem finding a parking spot, although I do admit that this was a late lunch. I believe we got there at about 1:45. When we went inside we were told we could sit anywhere, and we got the server's attention as soon as we sat down. She was cheerful and friendly and was very patient with us as we explored the menu. She suggested starting off with some spring rolls with charbroiled pork. We took this suggestion and were glad, because they were delicious. Then I ordered the Pho Bo Dac Biet, C ordered a small Pho Ga and also a rice dish with pork. I forget which kind of pork. He thought the small pho would be small. Haha. We ended up bringing some of the rice dish home. I am definitely not a pho connoisseur and I hadn't had it in a long time before yesterday, but I thought my pho was pretty good. Of course I put a bunch of hot sauce in because that's how I do it, but yeah, I thought it was pretty tasty. I tried the broth of the pho ga and that was pretty good as well. I was stuffed by the time I was done with my pho that I didn't have any room to try C's rice dish, but he seemed to enjoy it. Once we were done eating, the service got really slow all of a sudden. Maybe it's cuz our server was helping out in the kitchen (I really liked her), but we had to make an effort to get someone's attention to get a to-go box, but it wasn't a huge issue for me. Overall, I thought it was a satisfactory visit and I would love to go back to try more items on their big menu. Someone at the table next to us got the rotisserie chicken and that looked really good, and I can't wait to try some of the lemongrass dishes. It'll be like being back in SE Asia. The food is good but they don't answer the phone for to-go orders, sometimes (a lot of times) during open hours they just unplug the phone. They basically force you to use the Uber app to order and when u get there the restaurant is empty. Many times the phone will be unplugged and the Uber app has them unavailable during their open hours, multiple times a week. I like their Pho noodle soup. I always ask for extra meat to dump into it. I also like their pork egg rolls as appetizer. Before I eat my eggrolls, I mix hoisin sauce and hot sauce 50/50 in a separate tiny plate. I use this sauce to dip my eggrolls, and also to dip the meat from my soup before I eat them. I havent tried their pork chops, but I saw them on another table and I am dying to try them. If I remember well, the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays, therefore call to make sure. read more
