I've had the Bollywood Meat Thali on several occasions -- this has always been my go-to for dinner at Tandoor Indian Restaurant. You get portions of Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Curry, plus Naan, Basmati rice, and a Samosa. Mint and Chutney sauces are also included. It's a pretty good meal with a variety of different tastes and textures, without being too much to eat overall. Very good place in my experience... highly recommended. read more

For under $12, you don't typically find a decent buffet, but this one was good for a quick lunch. There are mostly chicken and vegetable options. Naan served at the table was very good. On the buffet I tried a variety of dishes. The chicken Tikka was the best dish I had that day. Good flavor, great sauce, and seemed to have good quality chicken. The chicken curry wasn't as flavorful as I expected. Pretty one dimensional. It could really use some heat. Tandoori chicken was also bland and not hot, temperature wise. I tried a few of the vegetable stews. They were all fine. Take out from here may be a better option, but for a quick and cheap lunch, it worked. The location is unassuming, at best. You enter the side of a building and then go downstairs. Doesn't really look like much from the outside. It's clean but very outdated. Some of the seating area is used for storage. This could definitely be more appealing with some effort. Service was good. Since it's a buffet, you don't need much but my plate was cleared quickly after I finished. The lady working answered questions I had about items on the buffet also. Overall, it was a good experience at a very good price. read more

Stopped in for dinner. Opened the door and was assaulted by the smell of mold and urine. Should have left then but it's nostalgic for my husband so on we went. I could not order any food because I knew I could not eat it, the smell was so disgusting. My husband is made of different stuff and had a meal that he says was good. I ordered something to go, got home and it was the wrong thing. I called and was grilled about what I actually received which was highly inappropriate, I finally had to raise my voice to get past this and that dish refunded. I wish I had insisted they refund the generous tip also. 12/10 do not recommend, for any reason. read more

The most disrespectful service I have ever been given. I strategically placed an order at 9:30pm because the internet said (as well as the sign outside of the door) that they closed at 10:00pm. I placed the order and the man on the other end mentioned "please hurry because we close soon". I was 20 minutes away and that placed me there at 9:53pm. At 9:45, after hauling ass to get there, the same man calls me back and asks where I am. He says that he said 10 minutes. I told him that I wasn't sure where I was at the time of placing the order however, I was a mere 6 minutes away. He simply hung up on me without saying a word! Upon arrival, I was boiling at the lack of respect I received as a customer. I go downstairs and proceed to tell him that I did not appreciate him hanging up on me and that if he did not want my business, I would take it elsewhere. I ALSO reminded him of the sign outside the door as well as the image I had on my phone (he was not interested in seeing), BOTH saying that the restaurant closed at 10:00pm.... It was merely 9:55pm. I will NEVER give this place a dime of my money again. They are disgustingly disrespectful and rude! In addition, perhaps someone should remind them that this female makes her own money and I spend it where I want. Being hung up on and treated as if I am not allowed to speak out for myself, is unacceptable! If you close at 9:45, then ADVERTISE 9:45 and not 10:00PM!!!! I went for take out with my daughter in law. I am visiting from out of town. We got about $90 worth of dinner. It was just not good. In fact, it was just really bad. Maybe it was an off night but it was pretty flavorless and unseasoned. We were very disappointed. read more

I read some of the other reviews by my fellow Yelpers and decided two things. 1: I really need to go try the lunch buffet! 2: I would be ordering the Saag Paneer. I ordered takeout via UberEats, and from the moment I placed my order to the moment my courier was arriving with my food, it was only 33 minutes! Score! I'm all about some speedy comfort food delivery as this weather gets colder. I ordered the Saag Paneer, which was decent, but I would have liked an option to have it made spicier (not docking points from Tandoor, since this might have been a 3rd party platform issue!). I also got the classic Chicken Tikka Masala, which was topped with some fresh aromatic herbs. The real star of the show, however, was the Aloo Naan. It was HOT. It was FLAVORFUL. It was SO FREAKING SATISFYING. I'm usually a garlic naan girl, but decided to give this one a whirl. I'm so glad I did, and this will definitely be in my regular order! THE FOOD IS OUTSTANDING!!!! It doesn't look like much when you walk in (quiet, downstairs), but this is incredibly delicious and (not that expensive) high quality Indian food. We got the vegetarian appetizer platter, which was delicious and let us try fritters, samosas, and pakora, which was all delectable. It came out super fast, and the waiter was so kind and helpful. For entrees, we had tandoori chicken - so sweet and spicy. We loooved the caramelized onions. We also got garlic naan (BEST I'VE HAD). We got yellow dal (dal tarka), which comes with a lot of rice. I love a good Indian buffet but this was not. Nothing had a good taste except the vegetable korma sauce (but it had few vegetables in it). The masala chai was good as a beverage but not included in the buffet. I took a plate of food and ended up not eating it. Even the naan wasn't worth eating. Also the place is dumpy. I've lived close by for a few months and always drive past this place but never went until today for lunch. First impression was "this place looks shady" You enter through the door and see two doors which are covered by curtains. And you realize quickly that you have to go down the basement to get to the restaurant. But upon entering it, it turns out they have an all you can eat lunch buffet with chicken tikka masala, basmati rice and all the fixins. The options are not very numerous but they also have a couple desserts to top it all off. Best of all, they give you bottled water and the very best of everything else is the price. For $9/person for pretty much the same thing you'd expect from any other all you can eat Indian buffet this place takes the cake. read more

I'm biased. I'll admit it. I've been coming here over the last 10 years. The two men that own/operate this place know me, even after I leave them for years at a time. They greet me like a friend they haven't seen in way too long every time I walk down those stairs and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, but it's really nice. I'm sure there's swankier Indian. In fact, I know there's swankier Indian. But this place, has hands down, the best Navratna Korma ever made on their buffet. And I collect Indian buffet experiences, coast to coast. It's simple and yes, mild (if you don't rock their hot sauce), but they have some really good, classic, primarily northern Indian going on in here. And yes, you have to ask for it, but they also have the best hot sauce I've found anywhere. A word of warning, the thicker it is, the hotter it is. Now, all that said. Everything not on the buffet, is so much better than anything on the buffet... Just remember this. Navratna Korma, with rice, and hot sauce=delicious. read more

This place has been around forever it seems. We ate here quite often in the early '90s, when quality Indian food was simply not available in the triad area. We still stop in here several times a year, as we did several weeks ago. Overall, the food is still pretty good, if not spectacular. The restaurant is in the basement of a building that also houses an insurance agency, and it is a little wierd since there are no windows. The inside is nice, but a litttle worn and dated. The service here is generally good, although it can slip when things are busy, especially if you are ordering off the menu. We especially like the Chicken Curry, Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Tikka, and the Chicken Vindaloo. You call your spice level, and they are pretty good about getting it right - Hot means hot. We usually order several dishes and vary the heat level, and with rice and raita as buffers, this works well. We avoid the buffet because most, if not all, dishes will be mild, by design. The Naan is generally good, but the Biryani dishes are a little weak and watery. The prices here are comparable with most Indian restaurants we frequent, all tend to be a little pricey, especially when portion size is considered. read more

Came here with some friends and ordered the Chicken Korma, Lamb Vindaloo, Lamb Biryani, and Paneer Saag. The Paneer Saag was probably my favorite of the four. It was spinach with chunks of cheese, and it didn't taste too heavy or creamy, as some paneers can be. It was nice and light with good flavors. The Chicken Korma was pretty decent - chicken was cooked well, and I liked the spices / sauce they used for it. I was not too impressed with the lamb dishes, though. The Vindaloo sauce was too tomato-y for my liking, and the lamb was dry and tough - just not very well cooked. The Biryani did not have much lamb in it, and I just wasn't very impressed with it overall. Granted, I'm no Indian food expert, but I've had better Indian food than this. I appreciate that they label which options are vegan- that alone brought up this review one star. I always really like the food and like the complimentary chutney and poppadom. It's a little pricey though, although they have done Groupon and LivingSocial deals. I'm surprised to read someone didn't get a water refill, because most times I go here I get far too many water refills. The waitress or hostess also tried to take away plates that still had food on them which was a bit strange. So overall, I'd say it's okay. I do wish they would abolish tipping though, just read this paragraph: Studies have shown that tipping is not an effective incentive for performance in servers. It also creates an environment in which people of color, young people, old people, women, and foreigners tend to get worse service than white males. In a tip-based system, nonwhite servers make less than their white peers for equal work. Consider also the power imbalance between tippers, who are typically male, and servers, 70 percent of whom are female, and consider that the restaurant industry generates five times the average number of sexual harassment claims per worker. And that in many instances employers have allegedly misused tip credits, which let owners pay servers less than minimum wage if tipping makes up the difference. The first thing you'll notice is that the location is in the basement of a State Farm building, but at least parking was easy. Very casual restaurant, great for a quick bite with others or by yourself; it's not quite the place I would go for a date, partly due to the first impression that the location makes, partly because the inside of the restaurant is not very impressive, and partly because the food was average. The food was decently priced and enjoyable, but I was not blown away by any of it (i.e. compared to the food at Raaga). That's not to say that it wouldn't do the trick of satisfying a craving for Indian food, especially at a very reasonable price (i.e. more like $10/person compared to the $25/person you'll spend at Raaga). Pretty disappointing experience. I ordered the Saag Shrimp, Chicken Tikka Masala, and an order of Naan( you get none with it). In total, my order came out to 45 bucks. Considering the price, there were maybe 5-6 small shrimp in the Saag Shrimp, and marginally more chicken in the Chicken Tikka Masala, though the sauce both were simmered in was good. The Naan was just OK, which is not "ok" when it cost me 8.00. For two entrees, there was also just one small thing of rice that came with it; I was told more rice and plasticware would be extra. I wouldn't order from here again, which is a shame. The Tikka sauce was actually quite good, but they are just too stingy to make it worth the price. read more

The atmosphere is funky - inconsistent lighting and the place is in the basement. The stairs are kind of awkward. Fantastic take out! We (over) ordered 7 dishes to share and an assortment of Naan and sauces to compliment. The Chicken Makhani was incredible as were the Lamb Mango and Mattar Paneer. I loved having the ability to order right from the website and customize our spice preference to accommodate the whole group. My husband and I took a chance on this place, because we wanted to avoid a long Saturday night dinner wait with our 3-year-old. I am SO GLAD we came. This was, hands-down, the best Indian restaurant experience I've had in the area. We got a meat samosa, garlic naan, the lamb Rohan Josh, and the Bhindi Masala (enthusiastically recommended, but "only if you like okra!"). They threw in a free mango lassi for the kiddo to try. All the food was excellent, and we saw multiple other dishes we want to try in the future. Some other reviewers called this place a "dive"; that doesn't seem like the right word to me, but I used to live in Baltimore and DC, where plenty of legit Indian, Korean, and Chinese spots were in basements or older buildings. The vibe here is honestly awesome; bright pink walls and faded yellow drop ceiling, if that paints a picture, plus everyone was INCREDIBLY nice, and great at interacting / joking around with our kid. Tandoor has been one of my go-to restaurants for several years. I love Indian food and am always looking out for good restaurants but this one remains my favorite. Whether I'm attempting vegetarianism or succumbing to my omnivorous desires I can always find something delicious and satisfying here. The food is amazing, the staff and sweet and helpful, and the vibe is relaxed and inviting. I've rarely seen it busy but everyone I talk to about it also have equally positive things to share. I even took the two kids I babysit here when they couldn't agree on what to eat and it's become a family favorite! read more

The place is in an old moldy building with really poor stairs. Not for the handicapped. Food was mediocre at best. Everything was sweet and the rice wasn't basmati. Their raita is very thick and creamy and the onion chutney wasn't edible. I would go back with so many options. I don't see how everyone loves this place... My wife and I ate lunch here in August, 2023. I ordered Malai Kofta, and it was excellent. My wife ordered a shrimp curry dish. She did not really like the taste (it tasted fine to me) so she decided she would like to get something from the buffet. I was planning to pay for both the items we had ordered, the buffet for my wife, as well as the two servings of naan bread that we ordered. The owner would not allow us to pay for the food my wife had ordered but decided she did not like. Instead, he only charged us for her buffet, which was less than the entree she had originally ordered. Furthermore, he removed the charge for one of our orders of naan because naan was available on the buffet. I thought this was extremely generous of him. For $9 a person, this is not only a great deal but a great place for Indian food in the area. The lunch buffet is fresh and hot - basmati rice with at least 4 or 5 different entrees. They also had a little dessert too. I would say that the naan was spectacular and even better because it was piping hot out of the oven. The only downside is that this place lacks...ambiance. It's down a set of stairs that might make uneasy if you didn't know what you were going toward. I'm not a huge fan of being served bottled water but at least you know it's clean? Appearances Matter! Upon entering Tandoor, you have to make an immediate right down a very steep staircase, and pull your footsies up from the super sticky carpet the whole way down. My friend and I were told to sit where we pleased, and were each given a bottle of Kirkland (aka Costco) water (no ice) and the only drinks they had besides tea were in cans, which I thought odd. My friend decided to go with the buffet and I chose to order off the menu. My Sag Paneer was awful. Apparently, I should have gone with the buffet, which was at least edible. read more

I'd previously rated Tandoor a 4, and had no complaints. I was happy with the food, content with the service, and the price was on par with most other local Indian restaurants. Unfortunately, my most recent experience destroyed any respect I had for the establishment. The food is still okay. The restaurant has reduced their portion size, but that's also forgivable in a tough economy. My experience has nothing to do with the food, and everything to do with how we were treated by the staff. The restaurant was pretty busy tonight, so I didn't begrudge them for taking a while to get to us. I am okay with a wait for something good. We finally got to order, and the portions were smaller than usual. The food was still pretty good, so that was fine. Unfortunately, everything about the night went downhill once the meal came to a close. The exact moment we finished our meal and our plates were cleared, the owner of the restaurant walked up to our table and told us to come to the register and pay. There were people waiting for a table, and I sympathize with the owner's desire to clear room for a busy night. Unfortunately, you can't ask a party to leave just because they've finished eating. Part of the experience of dining out is having the luxury to sit back and converse and relax. You're PAYING FOR THIS LUXURY. If someone sits for an hour after their meal is done? Sure, perhaps it's appropriate to ask them to leave so other patrons can sit. The moment they're done? No. That's rude. We got up, went to the register. I paid my bill. Because of the rudeness of our being asked to leave the restaurant and the slow service, I tipped just over 10% instead of my usual 15%. I probably would have felt bad about this later, but I wasn't given that opportunity. After signing my receipt, the manager stopped us from leaving and informed me that I hadn't tipped enough. "My waiters don't want to work for this," he said. Mind you, this was not a $1 tip. It was $4 on $39, when it should have been a dollar or two more if the service had been good. I was... astounded. I was embarrassed. There were people standing around the register, waiting for a table and overhearing this conversation. We were completely taken aback by this, and because of the insanity of the situation I found myself reaching into my wallet and offering another couple dollars in cash to satisfy this incredibly rude and inappropriate man. I should not have done it. I should not have done it, because no business owner has a right to tell a customer what is and is not appropriate for a tip. We will never, and I mean NEVER, return to Tandoor. I will gladly advise anyone I know not to darken the door of this establishment. I have never experienced this level of rudeness and inappropriateness in an eating establishment, and I'll gladly do my part to keep others from having to experience the same unpleasantness at Tandoor Indian Restaurant. read more

Since Tandoor is pretty well reviewed here on Yelp, I decided to check it out. I haven't really found a favorite Indian restaurant here yet, and am open to trying them all out. You open the door and there are stairs that lead down to the restaurant in the basement. I don't know this beforehand - a little weird to eat in a place without windows, but I am pretty open to anything. Not the cleanest place... don't really want to recount it all in my review... but there was a fly or two... and while we were eating, I saw two managers stomping loudly to kill something on the ground (now it could have just been a spider... but when you are eating, your imagination runs a little... and they could have been way more discreet killing whatever they were killing). Anyways about the food. It wasn't horrible, but not the best. I know there are many different types of naan, but I wasn't a fan of the naan we had here. It was very thin and almost crispy. I did like that they served it with a yogurt sauce. I had the chicken korma (yeah, I'm exciting, I order the same dish at every Indian restaurant) and it was super bland... I couldn't really taste much spices or flavors (I've learned from a few Asian restaurants here that you really need to ask for it spicy... "medium" doesn't really have hotness). I really wanted to like this place but... it just didn't live up to the food at other Indian restaurants here. read more

My boyfriend and I just stumbled upon this place for dinner after doing a shop at Trader Joe's. You have to walk down a flight of stairs in order to get to the restaurant and once there you are bombarded with Orange. Almost the entire interior is orange with a splash of red and cyan ( I love the color orange so I am not complaining about this). We decided to order the Tandoor dinner for two which consist of 2 Vegetable Samosas,2 Vegetable Pakora, Chicken Curry, Vegetable Curry, Lamb Pasanda served with Rice, Nan, Raita, Mango Chutney, Kheer. Everything that was served to us was delicious. My favorite thing was the Lamb Pasanda. It was so good I actually had to clean the serving dish with Naan just so I could get all of the sauce up. read more

We had take-out from Tandoor Indian last night - and it was so great I sent the restaurant a note. Here is what I wrote: Dear Tandoor Folks - Just a note to let you know that we had food from your restaurant delivered last night - and it was fantastic! We've had delivery from you and have eaten there quite a bit in the past - and I have never had any real complaints and have enjoyed quite a few of the meals. However - last night's meal was a new level of goodness - every element was on point - from the condiments (great consistency - full-flavored - not watery) to the rice (beautifully moist and flavorful) as well as the garlic nan (fresh, great texture), the veggie appetizers (the pakoras were especially light and spicy, perfectly crisp & chewy) - and the chicken sag was also at a great spice level - and filling but not overly rich. As I have titled this review, this review is of my experience of their food having it delivered to me. I ordered the following: - Lamb Vindaloo - Chicken Sorba Soup - Nan - Mango Lassi The food did not arrive promptly but on-time, which was within the 45-60 minutes window they gave me to expect. Being a fan of Indian food, particularly "Indian hot" Indian food, this place really delivered. Portions were excellent. Spice-level was exactly as I asked. The food was delicious, fresh, and of good quality. The nan was a little damp, but I attribute that to having sat in the tinfoil it was wrapped for delivery. Overall, for delivery food, it was EXCELLENT! On tip, which is not a compliant, but a tip is that if you require silverware/utensils (e.g. you are at a hotel as I was,) please be sure to ask. They are happy to include them, but don't automatically. Anyway, to sum this up, if you are looking for a night in but are craving Indian, this is the place from where to order. I really love this place. The one and only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because their buffet is not good at all. Don't order off the buffet, you'll regret it. The food just doesn't taste quite the same. I have been to this place so much that the owners know me and are so so nice. They know what I typically order (Chicken Biryani Hot and Garlic Naan). They also deliver which was great when I lived on Chapel Hill's campus. They are by far the fastest delivery to campus and the food is amazing. I haven't found any Indian food that matches it yet. read more
