Beautiful restaurant. Quiet and serene - which is great for a nice Saturday lunch. Mango Lassi was amazing, smooth creamy and very tasty. Chicken curry with parota was excellent.

Good, solid Indian food in Chapel Hill. The spring dosa was a fantastic appetizer with a few different sauces for dipping. The lamb vindaloo had a decent amount of tender lamb with a great sauce. The chicken tikka masala was great as well. The garlic naan was good. The main area for improvement would be on the service. Our waiter was attentive early on but then was more difficult to get a hold of to ask for the check and some to go boxes. He gave a great recommendation for the spring dosa though. Overall, Cholanad is a solid restaurant and I will come back!

Delicious, flavorful dishes! We got dinner on a quiet Sunday night, and the food came out really quick! I got the pepper chicken with Ceylon parota bread, and my friend got the chettinad chicken curry. the and they were pushed out on this little trolley. The presentation could be better, but I'm not judging off of looks here. The chicken was delicious and packed with aromatic spices, but pretty spicy, so make sure you can handle spice decently well before ordering. It was topped with raw onions and some mint leaves. The parota was really good for dipping, scooping the chicken, and eating it together. My one complaint was that the parota to chicken ratio was a bit off: much less chicken than I wanted but still filling. Overall, really good Indian food around the area!

Cholanad has been my favorite Indian restaurant in the area a few years ago. I recently went back for the first time in a while and can confirm that is still the case. Naan is always something I debate ordering at an Indian restaurant, but here it is never a question. The naan comes with a curry dipping sauce that is unique to any other sauce I've had anywhere else. The menu offers exceptional options for each course, and nothing I've tried was a disappointment. Staff always go above and beyond my expectations. The manager has remembered me from past visits and offered free samples of new offerings. The opinion of a top customer obviously matters. If you haven't been here yet, stop the naan-sense and come try it's out for yourself.

We've been meaning to try Cholonad for a while and finally decided to go when we had a discount from a local dining club. They used to be in a separate building but are now located where Ham's and Mellow Mushroom were located. We made reservations for an early weeknight dinner and my wife went in while I drove around to the parking lot in the back. We got garlic naan, mango lassis and I got the chetinad curry with parota (a flaky bread I had never tried before). The food was good but unfortunately the service was lacking. It looks like on that night they seemed to have two servers for the entire restaurant. It took us a long time for someone to take our order, and a long time to get our check. Perhaps their service is better on other nights when they have more staff.

Great customer service and large food portions, truly loved the food and the service from Cholanad. Thank you for a great experience staff and if you're in the area, try the lamb vindaloo!!

Being a South Indian and after reading the reviews i visited with my friends for dinner. The food was very bad and nowhere close to the actual South Indian food. There is not even enough people to serve and the answer I got was everyone is on vacation and they don't have any one to serve the cocktails. The ambience is average . I typically won't do this level of criticism in any of my reviews until it is so bad.

One of the most authentic tasting indian restaurants we've visited locally. Tender chana without being mush, and fall-apart lamb. The naan basket was underwhelming for me, but my wife quite enjoyed the subdued flavor. Only down side is the price... around $20 per meal, not including drinks, the naan basket, or starters. We spent $75 without trying. Not the cheapest, but very quality.

For South Indian cuisine in Chapel Hill, this place is pretty solid. I originally wanted to come here to try Pani Puri, which they called "tartlets" on their menu. It was really good. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, they offer vegetarian and non-vegetarian thalis, which are basically an assortment of sauces along with a side of rice and a couple bread pieces. Of course, coming on a Sunday, we were on board to try that. We ordered mango lassi, saffron-infused iced green tea, the bone-in mutton, parota and the vegetarian thali. Everything tasted so great and we left feeling very content. Note-they are currently short-staffed at the moment since there was one waiter running the floor and takeout, and food took a bit of waiting before it arrived but I think it was worth it.

Squid's is a long-established restaurant in Chapel Hill, and while it has been on my list of…read morerestaurants to visit, I'm glad I finally got the chance to try the seafood dishes. I ordered the Spicy Fra Diavolo which is a spicy tomato sauce/parmesan linguini pasta topped with calamari and shrimp. I also tried the fried seafood combination of local catfish and shrimp. The fried seafood combo was cooked to perfection. The catfish tasted fresh, without any of the fishy taste that catfish can sometimes have. The batter was crisp, while the fish stayed tender and juicy. The shrimp used for the fry were large and tasty. The pasta was the highlight of the meal, as generous heaps of shrimp and calamari paired well with the balanced flavor of the white/red sauce blend. I look forward to my next visit to Squid's. Pros: Large portions at reasonable prices. Fresh seafood cooked well with pasta and as a batter fry. Cons: None

I…read moreguess Squid's definitely is a staple to the Chapel Hill neighborhood for seafood fixings! My partner and I weren't feeling up for a dine-in, so we decided to do a takeout. We ordered their spicy fra diavolo which was packed to the brim with calamari rings! If you don't believe me, take a look at my picture for proof. After 10 minutes of digging through the pasta, I still managed to find 10 calamari rings, lol. No complaints here though! Just surprised at how bountiful the calamari rings were for the pasta. The sauce wasn't spicy, despite the name stating so, and was sufficient to coat each strand of pasta noodle. As for our second dish, how can we NOT get fried seafood?! So, we decided to go for their combo for any two items. We were pleasantly impressed with the size of the battered catfish. It was MASSIVE! The shrimp, on the other hand, wasn't anything special. Quite small. Not really juicy. If calamari was an option for this combo, we'd definitely go for it! Seasoning was a little salty, but the breading was nice and crispy. Not burnt tasting or oily, and complimented well with the cocktail and tartar sauce. Fries were normal, but quite small in portion. For $30, I'd imagine either a little more fries if shrimps are only 6 pieces, along with a piece of catfish. Food was pretty good! I can't speak for service because I did take out, but it seemed okay. The inside was really clean and had lots of tables! Maybe I'll bring my friends the next time they come visit here.

The star of the show in my opinion were the hush puppies and the corn and wild mushroom risotto. There were sooo many different flavors that perfectly complemented each other. I was blown away. And the pig cheek on top was incredible. 500/10. Our server made great recommendations! Then-- chaos and heartbreak ensued in the form of a fire alarm. We were forced to evacuate the restaurant as the fire department arrived , leaving about half our meal on the table. After 30 or so minutes of waiting out in the cold (we were apparently the only guests who hadn't paid out yet) our server came to find us. He asked us if we wanted to just give him our credit card information and he would ring us up later, when the fire department gave them the ok, as he understood not wanting to wait around. It broke our heart to leave our leftovers, but we agreed and went to go get the car. Thankfully we are stubborn.. and optimistic to a fault. And by the third time we circled around the block, the fire truck was pulling away. I ran in and asked if there was any chance our food hadn't been thrown away yet, and it hadn't! The staff was happy we had been able to come back, and they packed everything up for us, even taking the hush puppies off the bill and sneaking in a complimentary piece of key lime pie. I'm so glad we were able to tip our server appropriately for his great service-- and rescue our leftovers. Happy ending. All was well. (And the fire ended up being something innocuous in the unit above the restaurant)

I sincerely appreciate the choice of vegetarian, vegan, or omnivore options for the tasting menu -- that's quite special. The space is modern and elegant but still cozy, with soft lighting, subtle earth tones, and an open layout that balances intimacy and energy. Service was outstanding from start to finish, attentive, informed, and genuinely enthusiastic about the menu. Let's get into the food, because this was one of the most exciting and consistently excellent meals we've had in a long time. We started with They Might Be Tostones, a clever and beautifully layered dish with Murasaki sweet potato, lime-pimentón crema, and chili crisp. It was punchy, bright, and balanced. The Warm Rustic Baguette with whipped butter and sea salt may seem simple, but it was divine, crusty on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for lingering. Dirt Candy, a medley of seasonal vegetables with toasted pistachio ail lade, was vibrant and thoughtfully composed. The Big Eye Tuna Carpaccio with red miso-citrus bagna cauda and delicate shoots was fresh and refined, with a perfect acidity and richness. We moved on to heartier plates like the Ricotta Gnocchi with Italian sausage, peppers, whipped ricotta, broccoli rabe, and chili flake. The gnocchi were pillowy and deeply flavorful. The Kabocha Squash & Farro with lump crab, pancetta, and miso butter was savory, slightly sweet, and full of texture. The Pan Roast with flounder, mussels, fregula, and smoky shellfish sugo was bold and briny, with layers of flavor in every bite. Two pasta dishes also stood out, the Ravioli di Manzo with Barolo-braised beef and Parmigiano was rich and comforting, while the Plin Piemontese, filled with pasture-raised pork and finished in crema di parmigiano, was elegant and silky. For dessert, we shared all three options and each one brought something different. The Citrus plate with steamed lemon pudding and lemon curd was light, tart, and texturally playful. The Cheesecake with maple mascarpone and cranberry compote was creamy, nutty, and not overly sweet. But the star was the Chocolate Fondant, extra dark, gooey, with salted caramel gelato and hazelnut crumble. An absolutely unforgettable finish. OakLeaf is a standout. Every dish felt thoughtful, seasonal, and beautifully executed. We will absolutely be back.

I enjoy cheese plates, and this one was great, but I can understand it may not be for everyone. My wife ordered the Red Fish, which had a more Southeast Asian-inspired twist to it. It came over rice and pickled onions and beets, and the flavors were a blend of lemongrass and coconut. The fish was cooked well - nice and tender, not too dry - and the flavors went well together. I ordered the New York Strip, which was delicious - the meat was well cooked, had great flavor, and was a generous portion that was very filling.
