The foods a solid 3 stars, basic but fortunately affordable. What makes this a 2 star review is the service. Nice folks but holy cow, either clueless about proper service or just ambivalent. Had to initiate everything on our own. Asked for drinks. Went back and asked for waters. Silverware. Want the app plates cleared, or any plates for that matter, forget it. Friday night restaurant was empty, 3 employees basically staring blankly at us as we wondered when they'd step in to help serve us. It was cocktail time in Viroqua and we were so glad to have stumbled upon Tangled Hickory! While they have big screen TVs throughout the bar (not a fan), the ambience was cute. Good lighting and a beautiful dark wood bar with comfy leather bar stools. Our bartender was an absolute sweetie! She offered free samples of beer to my husband before he ordered a Spotted Cow (a Wisconsin classic). She also made really delicious cocktails (old fashioned, Moscow mule and a whiskey martini) for me and our friends. We couldn't believe how affordable the drinks were! Food was really low quality. Chicken tenders were the McNugget mystery meat and the fries were equally bad. Nobody liked anything we ordered. None of the staff wore masks. Very disappointing. read more

To start out with the good...the food! It was better than expected! But I'm really writing this to let you know about the bad. BUGS IN DRINKS. My husband ordered a mix drink. He had one before dinner. Ordered another for dinner and fruit flies were in his drink. We told our server, we watched him tell the owner who was sitting at the bar. We watched her ROLL HER EYES, wave her hand and say okay. We did not get offered a new drink, he would have gotten a beer. When we got the bill, the drink was STILL ON THERE!! I had to ask to have it removed. Not a sorry, nothing. Unfortunately, because the food was good, we are sad we will never go back, if we can help it. read more

We had dinner on a Friday night and was excited to try their Friday Thai Fusion menu. Upon arrival my husband and I ordered a glass of wine. It took 10 minutes to receive the wine. The restaurant was not busy. Our waitress was not very good, but not for lack of trying. I received the wrong entree. while the rest of the people in my party where eating I was waiting for what I ordered. My husband ordered the Thai beef served over jasmin rice. The rice was completely overcooked and mush. the beef was dry and the entire dish lacked flavor. Once I received my order of the pork ribs I was pleasantly surprised, besides being slightly overcooked it was good and had good flavor. Food was overpriced. If it would have been consistently good I wouldn't mind paying what we did. However, that was not our experience. Rating on service alone. Terrible. I would return only for wine and maybe appetizers. read more

Nice place! We had a great time. The drink menu is excellent, with 5 Old Fashioned options, many other cocktails and margaritas, and wine. We knew we'd be fine when we saw the Buffalo Trace sign on the wall - they even have a Buffalo Trace flight! We had wine flights, which were 5 generous pours (of our choice) for $21. We also had a cheese board - the accoutrements were great, and a pear & gorgonzola flatbread. Finished our evening with a lovely tawny port and ruby port. What a great find in this town! read more

We enjoyed a great evening at the Tangled Hickory last night. This local venue has improved immeasurably since they first opened. Full cocktail bar delivered one of the best Brand Old Fashioneds I've found anywhere. The appetizer (hummus with artichoke dip) was tasty, and our entree (manicotti with marinara sauce and sausage) was delicious. Plus, the entertainment by local performers and business owners Ted and Catherine Parrish was amazing - they're both incredibly talented, and Catherine has a stunning voice. Only fault, we'd like to see more variety on the variable menu, which changes often. Last night, at least, four of five entrees featured marinara sauce. read more

Great downtown location. Bar and restaurant are smartly separated and decor is well done. Wine choices are expertly picked. Food is prepared by chef and was absolutely delicious. Only improvement opportunities I saw was that there was only one entrée choice. Would be better if had options, even if limited to 2 or 3 dishes. If you walked in, sat down and realized you weren't interested in the entrée, you're out of luck. read more

Great idea in Viroqua or Vernon County even. The look and the feel is very comfortable and yet classy. Nothing u have to wear a tie to but very The food menu is very fitting. Small plates, sandwiches, burgers, and even some big plate items. The tomato bisque was amazing!!!! Our girl Ashley took care of everything we needed. Her suggestions for tapas and food were spot on! There is a decent wine and beer menu. There also is a specialty cocktail menu as well. To be a little honest I think there would be a few more selections on the wine menu but what they had was very good. Prices are reasonable and never seemed over priced or even remotely questionable. With some of the specialty drinks and scotch I expected a higher price, but was happy to see it where it was at. The pasta with sausage and marinara was phenomenal. The grass fed beef burger was fresh and perfectly prepared. The chef, Brice, came out a few times to ensure the quality of what we ordered. It is obvious he has a passion for his work and it shows in presentation and quality! Summarizing this establishment is simple. Get here! You won't break the bank, but you will get fantasticly served and prepared food every time. My wife and I will be back many times. Only thing to add is maybe a paint and wine event. By the looks of the place I was excited to eat there, after 10 minutes the server finally arrived and was busy but rude, I ordered my drink and the server took off before my husband could order his, I got up to grab my menus and then was told it would be an hour before any food left the kitchen, I asked even the chips and salsa? Rude waitress responded with an I'm so sorry but yeah, needless to say I left paying for my over priced crappy sangria and went across the street to Daves which was awesome! We passed through Viroqua with intent of stopping for food and weren't aware of Tangled Hickory. What a wonderful and relaxing wine bar! Service was excellent, prices were fair, actually on the low side when considering quality. The two of us had sandwiches and, what else, wine. We bought a bottle with our food, the wine was $16.00 which in a restaurant is very low and of course a great deal! Don't be intimidated by the haute cuisine atmosphere, casual is fine...relax, sip and dine! Bella! read more

My partner and I were very disappointed with a wine bar that only had 5 options each for white and red, besides the 2 house options. We arrived expecting a more upscale dining experience. We were sat by the kitchen in a nearly empty restaurant. Our table was sat beneath a burnt out light bulb, though many other tables were available. The menu was lack luster. Essentially there were five options for a burger and five identical options to replace the burger with chicken. We were hoping for something to pair wine with - perhaps a steak? Maybe some fish? A pasta dish? Anything besides bar food? For an appetizer we got the Spicy Spinach and Artichoke dip. It wasn't spicy, but the flavor was good. My partner got the Southwest Chicken Sandwich. He thought it was ok. I got the soup and salad. The soup dejour was a poorly described Thai chicken soup - but it was delicious. The house salad seemed locally sourced and was good, too. The presentation was also good and our server was very attentive and professional. We were expecting a fine dining experience and didn't get one. Adding some steak and fish to the menu would have changed our experience a lot. A wine bar needs things to pair with wine. read more

My first visit to Tangled Hickory was amazing. The wait staff was excellent and very friendly. The bartender was very knowledgeable about the various wines. The service was quick. The food was delicious (I had the tortilla soup and a sandwich). For dessert, the cheesecake and truffles were perfect. The prices were reasonable as well. Finally, the atmosphere...this place is so cozy and comfortable, it feels like you are hanging out at a friend's place. The live music was wonderful and really set the mood. Second time eating here. The first time it was decent food and a little pricey. This time our burgers were microwaved, and our cheese curds came out at least 15 minutes after our food. Lastly there was a bee found in my boyfriend's soda. Nothing was done other than asking if he wanted a new full glass. Tangled Hickory is the must stop at place for an evening in Viroqua,Wi. Laid back casual atmosphere with good food and the best drinks in town. Try the martini menu. You feel right at home whether your casual or " dressed to impress ". They also have some great wine tasting events. I highly recomend. read more

Second time going to Tangled Hickory. They have expanded their dinner menu and we have been impressed both times with the friendly, socially adept (albeit young) wait staff. Started with the spinach and artichoke dip with pita bread toast. Yum yum!! Had a perfectly spiced pork rib and strawberry-rhubarb wine with a slice of organic strawberry. Very nice! A lovely, young lady was playing piano music through our dinner. The food and decor reminded me of an intimate New York restaurant serving high quality, local/organic food. They have beautiful paintings and comfortable sitting areas to hang out and savor a couple of glasses of wine. Very nice atmosphere and a welcome departure from so many ordinary restaurant/bar settings. We spent only slightly more than we would have at the Driftless. read more

I went with my mom and sister and we ordered and paid for the appetizer platter. After about 30 mins we finally asked where it was to get the response "oh the chef left 10 minutes ago... Unbelievable Live music - I caught these two guitarists playing what sounded like Jazz, then a Blues number - even a dimented "Mary had a little Lamb" version. What a treat to stumble upon live music, the kind that I only thought existed in "Big" cities. read more
