Susan is the owner and really knows her craft. She doesn't speak much English but everything works out. Her massage is very therapeutic. She isn't very tall but she sure is strong. The traditional Chinese medical massage here has been very helpful for my chronic back pain. A lot of places in this price range are not nearly as deep or thoughough for the price. What a strange visit this was! I always get deep tissue massages from "western" establishments so was excited that this was place is the real deal when I saw the groupon deal. When I got to the center I was impressed at how cozy and clean it was. Based on the reviews for Susan, I was glad when she was the one who checked me in and set me up. I was unsure when they gave me a Tshirt and sweats to wear. When a guy walked in and not Susan I felt disappointed as I really wanted to work with Susan because of her great reviews. I understood why I had to wear their special clothes right away. Without introducing himself, he jumped in tapping my back and assessing my muscles. It felt "raw" to have a massage without any oils or tapping or breathing exercises which I enjoy being eased into things. After deciding my left side needed the most help, he then started pounding away on the left side for nearly 40 mins. Being used to deep tissue massages, I can take a decent amount of pain...especially when a massage therapist will rub a bit to diffuse the area that they're digging into. However this guy did none of that. After gritting my teeth through about 30 mins and telling myself to breathe through the pain I spoke up, surrendering and waving the red flag. However, he kept going and going!!! After saying it 5 more times he finally eased up on the pressure but started grumbling that "I don't like pain," putting a damper on the rest of the session. The whole time he made comments shaking his head and trying to tell me through broken english about all the ways my body is misaligned. I get it, but a gal needs a little bit of a pick-me-up and assurance that it's all fixable with the right massage right? Part of the difficulty and frustration was truly the english...I couldn't understand him and vice versa. The "massage" which to me felt like more of an adjustment session, was done in 70 mins. When I checked out, Susan kept trying to "sell" me on the other massages for $60/hour but I had to tell her repeatedly that I still had 2 more massages left on my groupon. She just didn't understand that. Then she told me "groupons are very expensive for us, now you tip us." Which was an awkward way to end the already-bad session...oh my. This was my 2nd time going to a traditional Chinese place and my 1st time at a small little shop in New Haven was heavenly. So I'm not sure what went so wrong especially given all the other great reviews! The stars were just not aligned for this gal on a Friday night I guess. read more

Prepare to be sore, my friends. This ain't no cake walk massage, this is more of a "how-hard-can-I-push-before-you-cry" type of massage. It's the good kind of hurt though. No pain, no gain, right? So I found out about TAO courtesy of a Groupon deal (don't worry, I double checked the legitimacy of this place on Yelp prior to purchase), and bought a deal for 2 so my boyfriend and I could both get the knots worked out. When I called TAO to make the appointment, I called the "English speaking line" (this should have been my first tip off that we were in for a unique experience ala Buford Hwy), the lady who answered in very broken English told me the earliest time they had (hopefully for two people, I couldn't be sure I'd communicated that clearly enough) the coming Saturday was 1 PM. Ok, cool - that'll work. I told her as much and asked if she needed my Groupon number, name, anything? Nope - they'd just see us then. Ok... We arrived in front of the little house with the large neon foot sign outside a little after 1 and walked right in to the empty seating area decorated with Chinese screens, lucky bamboo, fans and flowers. The same lady I'd talked to on the phone greeted us and had us fill out clipboards with our pressure points highlighted. I also noted the sign that stated clearly no hanky-panky type massages would be offered at this particular establishment - always good to set ground rules like that. Then we were whisked to the back for our massages. My lady was excellent. She introduced herself after I'd undressed and gotten comfy under the sheet, set the background music to playing (I swear the soundtrack from "Titanic" got slipped in there), and laid the smack down of massages on me. Every inch got worked over. Vigorously. She got my neck, shoulders, scalp, arms, fingers, back, low back, hips, legs, calves, feet, toes, then flipped me right side up and did my face, stomach, tops of my thighs: everything! She even aligned my chis and told me to start drinking hot drinks (tea I'm guessing) in the morning. At some points it was slightly painful, but I just breathed through the pain and it was over quickly. I felt great afterward, and of course like I needed to drink a gallon of water to flush out all the toxins I was sure must have been released by this massage. My boyfriend, on the other hand, was slightly less ebullient His masseuse was a former chiropractor in Taiwan, and he was also "vigorous" though I guess to a greater extent than my lady. Long story short, he got the knots worked out, but took Ibuprofen for a few days after as the excess muscle soreness wore off. When I asked him why he didn't just say it was a little too intense, he just gave me a look and mentioned his Man Card being revoked for such a show of weakness. Men... Ah well. I enjoyed TAO, and if another good deal came around, I'd certainly go again. This isn't a "relaxing" massage per se, but it's certainly a thorough one. read more

I've been looking for a place like this for the past 8 years. Real Chinese massage practitioners are difficult to find. This place is the real deal!! Eastern medicine uses a very different approach to healing than the traditional Western methods most of us are accustomed to. If you've never had a true Chinese massage, you should know that they are not relaxing and are often painful. The reason to get Chinese massage is because your body is messed up and you want it healed. This type of massage is much more effective than any normal Swedish or deep tissue for therapeutic benefit.. If you understand what you're getting yourself into, give feedback on your pain throughout the session which is aggressively targeted, and breath properly (exhale when they push down), within a few sessions any body aches and pains which you may have had for years show a remarkable improvement. While they have two phone numbers, an English line and a Chinese line, calling to schedule an appointment is challenging. It's easier to just drive there. Only once did I have to wait, and that was because I wanted a specific person to do my massage. I go every two weeks. read more

I went here because of a Groupon deal, and I'm glad I did! I called and got an appointment the same day, and despite me being fifteen (yikes!!) minutes late, the woman at the front desk was very polite and welcoming. She asked if I wanted to try a Chinese massage and I said sure, why not? It's always fun trying something new. Unfortunately I made the mistake of taking off my top and laying on the bed, apparently that wasn't necessary haha! The man was very professional though and didn't embarrass me and left to let me redress. The massage was very thorough and went the full time. Relaxing Chinese music played. I have lower back pain and this really really helped. He even flexed my legs and arms out in the same way a physical therapist would - really felt good to stretch! I would definitely recommend this place - professional, great massage, and great staff. read more

Baaaaaaybay!!! I have one name for you! Mr. Tan!!! oh my gawd!! This is my birthday weekend and one of my good girlfriends got me a massage with Mr. Tan for this morning! And i must say, after a second night of birthday partying I needed this to happen. LOL! You don't have to take off any clothing. Thinking ahead just in case i would have to remove clothing, I wore an A-tshirt and some sweat pants but again you don't have to remove clothing. Mr. Tan does traditional Chinese pressure point massages i've never had a pressure point massage so I didn't know what to expect. Due to some early birth defects and another bone/muscle deficiency that developed later, I have been under the care of chiropractors and massage therapy all of my life but I can truly say I have NEVER had a massage like this. Somehow I fell somewhere between sleep and not sleep simply because the minor pain and then the relief of what he was doing was painfully wonderful! And he also did some minor adjustments (which i'm used to) but a few of 'em i'd never had and it felt GOOD!! oh man! The funny part to me is that neither one of them speak very good English so they use their i-pads to translate what treatment they want to recommend. I thought that was kinda cool! My girlfriend got a foot massage from Susan, she goes there all of the time. I think i'll be back, no i KNOW i'll be back!! So making the drive to N Druid Hills Rd is well worth the trip!! I love this Dr. Tan. He is a real Healer. It is intense when your getting massages but well worth the pIn. There is no pain afterward like when I've gone for deep tissue massage and I feel torn up afterward. He helped me a tremendous amount with mobility, stress and joint/muscle pain. Only 4 stars because communication can be challenging because of the language barrier. read more

I recently went and although it was not quite relaxing I have to say it was very effective. There were times I wanted to cry when he would put pressure on certain areas of my body. But I gotta say that the slight arch in my upper back is gone and my writs and ankles don't pop any more (when I rotate them). I will be going back. Hopefully he can help relieve all of my tension. read more

I'm so glad I used Yelp this morning to look up massage places in Decatur this morning. I never would've found the Tao Wellness Center otherwise. It was lucky that I could get an appointment today for a Head, Shoulders and Neck massage as well as a foot massage. This definitely a very unflashy place but Susan is a world-class massage therapist. I agree with Paige N.'s review - Susan's Head, Neck and Shoulders massage was really more of a treatment or therapy for my extremely tight shoulders and neck. BTW, i did have to take off my clothes as she used hot rocks on my back which were extremely nice - not really relaxing, but needed. Susan has the strongest hands and boy did she use them. Also, i believe she used her elbows to try to get my muscles to relax. The massage room was very clean and quiet except for some nice music. I'll definitely be going back. i've had a lot of Western type massages which feel great, but I think that this Chinese massage can help fix some of my muscle problemsn! read more
