I love plastic. I don't like wood unless it is painted black or fuschsia and doesn't look like wood. See, wood reminds me of the homes of homophobes and rednecks and I just can't get over that. yes I hate wood and I love plastic. But enough about me, lol. I wanted to make some crap out of plastic years ago so I went to Tap Plastic. Sings the song, "TAP!, Tap Plastic, the fantastic, plastic plate! Ta Ta Ta Tappp!" Anywho. I am not very handy around the house buildig stuff and ...and nothing I guess. So anyways, went to this store and I thin I was going to make a clear fuschia plastic DJ stand, or something like that...and their prices were high. plus you have to build it yourself. What a pain in the ass, The prices were ridiculous. could buy a plastic DJ turntable stand for less than it would cost to make one at this place. Maybe I wanted a custom aquarium, I forget. I have been going to this TAP for several years. I've found their customer service great and technically competent. I'm always asking for odd things for my sculptures and theTAP staff are understanding and helpful. This TAP is tuned into projects whether they are for your home or business. I understand they supply a lot of plastics and custom cuts and some fabrication to tech shop people around the corner and to many creative art students and designers. TAP carries a vast assortment of plastics and some carbon fibre items too. I'm attaching photos of some of their odder offerings such as solid core clear plastic tubes in bright colors which are black light sensative as an example. Few places carry this stuff so if you want an edge for your art work or your art degree consider using some of this stuff in your projects you will not find most of it in any art supply store. read more

I needed some acrylic/plexiglass for a project. I needed it cut to a particular size and wanted something firm--that could stand in for a window. I went to Lowe's thinking I could get what I wanted, but not even close. The sad substitute I found couldn't even be cut by the frustrated and miserable staff. Then I called around and got referred to these folks who had something so far beyond what I was about to settle for, for so much less money, I was beside myself. They cut it exactly to my measurements quickly and it couldn't have worked out better. For any project requiring plastic--any at all--these guys are going to be my first stop. Friendly, competent, huge selection, parking, cheap... it is literally all you need. And that it's so centrally located! So glad I found these guys. You will be too. read more

The Good people at TAP Plastics San Francisco are simply phenomenal! Everyone is super knowledgeable and friendly. Turnaround time is almost instant and the product turns out amazing! I had two projects completed here: two custom cut acrylic sheets for use in a bathroom inlay shelf and 2 nightstands surfaces. I came in the next day to modify the 2 nightstand surfaces: rounding off the edges which Dante and Roy tagged teamed and got done in literally no time! Victor originally completed the project and was so helpful to my wife in choosing the right material. I love this place. They have all the plastic things I could ever need, and plenty of plastic things that I didn't even know that I needed. I've found a lot of great stuff (including plastic mirrors) in their scrap bin really cheaply, and I've gotten some good sheets of plastic to frame posters over the years. The only bad thing is that corner cut-outs cost $10 each (as opposed to $1.50 per cut for straight cuts), and the corner cuts come out rounded, which they didn't tell me beforehand. (If you want corner cuts, you can probably get the same effect at home with a lighter and some scissors for much less money.) They also helped me to find the right kind of glue for a project I was doing. We looked at a bunch, and they didn't try to sell me the more expensive one (or do a "hard sell" at all, for that matter), but helped me find the one that was just right. I've not really experienced much bad attitude from these guys. They've always seemed friendly and professional. read more

So I have this idea for a device, I looked online and couldn't find it anyplace. After some Google searching I seem to be at a loss, it may not exist. So I start thinking of a design. I need plastic. Being a Bay area kid TAP is ingrained in my mind from years of commercials. I've never ever been in one until today. This place is amazing. It's a plastic castle in the sky. They have a scrap bin, I found a small acrylic scrap epithet more than enough material for $2. They had some of the other things I needed for my project as a bonus. They speed me how to cut the plastic by scoring it (super easy) explained how the glue (solvent) works. Also as a bonus I found some plastic polish I was looking for. This place had a lot of stuff. If you need resin, this place has every different kind you could need. That's my next project. The staff is super cool, they demonstrated something for me. I ordered 7 pieces and paid extra for "Machined edge" as per the TAP recommendation. 4 of the pieces were ordered with a specific length of 15 1/4" in order to accommodate the assembly. 2 of the pieces were 15 3/16" long and the other 2 were 15 5/16" long. The length difference was a full 1/8". I contacted customer service and "Taylor" indicated the pieces were within "Tolerance". Why would TAP Plastics recommend that I order machined edges for assembly and then cannot cut the pieces to the specific length I ordered. Suggest the buyer beware of this company. read more

Quick update: Someone tried to break into our garage. They smashed the glass, but weren't able to get past the polycarbonate. Today I went back to Tap for some more polycarbonate sheets to replace the glass panels. They were able to cut them immediately. JR was super helpful as in other visits. Tap Plastics is one of the last places I know of where a person can walk in with an idea or a sketch and some measurements and walk out with a new, 3-dimensional tool, part, artwork, or other useful object. I'm a scientist and I've used them many times, to make replacement parts for old instruments and build new equipment. Most other custom fabrication shops require accurate drawings and large orders. I can't draw, I don't know how to use CAD programs, and I seldom need hundreds of copies of a single thing, so that leaves me out. The employees here take time to help me work out the best design and explain alternatives that make the best use of the materials, work around the limitations of their milling and cutting tools and save money. I find them intelligent, creative and very generous with their time. I'm a woman and I've never been talked down to here. I see them take the same time with people who are making costumes, household stuff and artwork as they do with my scientific equipment. Some people complain about their prices, but they are usually 50-70% below the prices charged by scientific supply companies for replacement parts. They've saved me a bundle over the years and allowed me to make things that no company sells. I've worked with people San Francisco store and San Leandro. Thank you to Jacobo Geronimo and Junior at the SF store for the recent projects, but I've had excellent help from many different employees over the years. This place really is unbearable. In addition to charging me way too much for way too little crap, the employees all had really annoying, smug attitudes. They sell plastic, something that is about as rare a resource as air. But if I didn't notice the warehouse full of junk (and I mean that wholeheartedly ie: plastic block paperweight) and wreaking stench of crap, you would think they were selling sips of the holy grail. I bought two pieces of plastic from them. Each one cost $8. In a rectangular shape. But once I had them cut it into an oval, which took all of about 5 minutes, the two pieces cost me nearly $76. Nice. Then when I asked them to bend it for me, the guy says: "We don't bend plastic." "Really, why not? Is it difficult? How do I do it on my own?" I asked. "It's pretty simple, put it in the oven. Get it warm, and then bend it and hold it till it cools." Really, well if it's that f-ing simple and your name is TAP F-ing Plastics, why the hell don't you bastards do it??? Worthless. read more

The first time I came into Tap Plastics I felt like I'd made a great find. I'd been in one of their other stores before, but hadn't remembered it being this cool. They had several neat displays to look at and I was able to find some pieces in their scrap bin that fit my needs perfectly and left happy. Every other time I have been in here they have had serious attitude. I always assumed they simply disliked aquariums because they refused to even discuss my projects if I used the phrase "holds water". They instantly told me it was "an impossible project" even though there are multiple companies that build acrylic aquariums. Maybe their build quality is so low they can't make things hold water, who knows. I don't think they have an attitude towards women that I've seen, but they seem to take a strong disliking to anyone who wants something custom built. They do not seem to have any interest in aquarium related projects, so don't even bother asking them. In addition, I called today to ask about plastic washers I needed for a construction project, and was bluntly told to go to the hardware store before I even finished describing them. You would assume a store with plastics in the name would have a source for washers, or at least know where to find them and be able to order them so they could resell them to you for a profit, but these guys don't have time for silly customers who have questions. Either they are way too busy and are trying hard not to sell their products or they just think it's cool to have an attitude because they don't have any direct competition. Maybe the employees have simply spent too much time huffing fumes. If you need some acrylic cubes, spray bottles, or scrap plastic this is the place to go. If you need anything that requires customer service it's probably not worth your time to come here. read more

Chalk up another one for the "Bald Devil". I'm not a woman and my questions were not dumb - I did my research, but getting this guy to be helpful was a task. I was not intimidated by his rudeness, it only made me press him to do what a customer expects, especially from the manager! I called before I went to confirm they had the materials I thought I would need, for my first attempt at making molds and castings, with specific requirements. The person I spoke to on the phone was very helpful- so much so that I was excited to get there. I thought he said his name was Mikey- apparently I was wrong. The first guy who offered to help, all but said "I just know the basics"- fair enough. So I asked "Is there someone here who has more experience that could answer some questions for me?" How about Mikey? "There is no Mikey, but there is a Mike" (cue dramatic music). With obvious disdain, he answers my questions, with short yes & no answers, would only confirm what I already knew, but would not offer any elaboration, or advice. Fine- fuck you too. I get my products and leave. At home I'm still a little bothered about my experience there, so I decide to call them before I go and blast them here. I call and ask to speak to the manager- not knowing it was the a-hole who barely helped me. So I told him the reason I called and that I thought his attitude suggested that he did not give a fuck if I bought anything or not, ant that I decided to call him first before I posted a negative review on yelp. His response: Chuckle chuckle, thanks for calling. click. In the future I will explore any & every other option for acquiring anything this branch has to offer. You can get some good prices on stuff in the scrap bin. I got two large pieces of acrylic priced $7.50 and $5.00. One guy was decent, the other was super condescending. If I hadn't already made my purchase before this guy made a rude remark I wouldn't have bought anything. 3 stars for the scrap bin fulfilling my needs. -1 star for the asshole employee. Seems this is THE place you go far anything plastic , fiberglass or glue related. Also good for a freaky Clockwork Orange , fume induced , world-o-plastic trip Got a nice piece of 1/4" Lexan to cover the lower rise , but wide and easily scratch-able, Ikea Expedit Espresso bookcase It's an integral component of my home office (and now to be bike shop work table). Decided to be more subtle, with the clear gloss and opposed to the fluorescent , translucent, tangerine color. I was kind of rushed thru by one the more senior employees there, had to push back and tell him it's my first time and not an expert on how things work @ tap. This caused me to not think clearly and give the slightly wrong measurements (by 3/16 of and inch, not a big deal, they even said they'd cut another piece, even tho it was my mistake) For a $78 piece of plastic felt bad to make them take that loss, so will live with it I couldn't imagine working there day in and day out, it just smells like cancer waiting to happen. Blinky the 3 eyed fish was swimming in the tank and my kids, whenever I decide to have them, might pop out Costner-like-- webbed toes, gills and all Bonus points for having all the chemicals you'll ever need to huff your face off TIP, they do have their own private lot, one the busy crossroads near all those triangular streets intersecting, 101, 12th , Mission , Otis , Market which is next to the giant car wash and gas station, so maybe make it a multiple purpose trip if you are driving read more

If you sew, this place will soon become your best friend. I love to sew, although I HATE cutting fabric and I tend to sew the patterns over and over again. I finally had a smart attack and brought in the measurements of some of my favorite patterns and they cut me thick templates to the exact measurements. Now all I have to do is take my handy rotary cutter and my Tap Plastic templates and no more fabric cutting hassles. Easy peasy! The staff is amazing and nothing fazes them - and they are quick, quick, quick! Prices are great and parking is easy. Oh, how I love you Tap Plastics! read more

This place is great and not so great at the same time. I came here with a friend earlier today to get some pieces of acrylic cut up for a project. This store definitely has a lot of selection with regards to anything acrylic, or poly carbonate. Tubes, sticks, boxes, racks, et cetera and so on. And if they do not have it on the floor, they will get it made for you! Prices are reasonable, and the facility is very clean and spick and span. The only thing I did not particularly enjoy about this TAP Plastics location is the quality of the customer service. The people on hand just seemed to be like a bunch of dead beats, I hate to say. There was no enthusiasm on their faces at all. They all sort of had that "I can't wait to get off the clock" attitude in my opinion. All of our answers were presented in a one word fashion, which bothers me a little; maybe not so much others. But hey, that is my two pennies, and I am entitled to them. All in all, if you're looking for anything plastic [even custom fabricated plastics], this is the place to go. Don't expect super friendly staff people though. read more

This place is HORRIBLE. I tried to get simple vinyl lettering created, first they bounced me around to 4 different people in 3 offices. Then, they told be they had to charge me a $25 FEE to convert my standard illustrator file to their out dated software. Then, the guy MIke basically yelled at me on the phone stating that he doesn't agree with his own companies policy but that is the way it is, so I should deal with it or go somewhere else. Mike, Dom and Russ all gave me the run around and lost what would have been a long lasting customer. Don't use this place! Save yourself the time and do what that they told me... Great place for odd art ideas or household projects requiring any type of plastic. I bought some transparent plastic and made some speaker stands for my studio monitors. If you need it, they'll cut to size for free too. Don't get your green panties in a bunch either, I used the "recycled bin" for it all. read more

great place for designers & artists to frequent. I try to stop by their scrap bin at least every other week for acrylic on the cheap. their non-scrap acrylic is pretty cheap too (1/8" @ 5$/sq ft.) they also have a lot of other stuff i havent really utilized yet like a sign shop and you can hire them for like laser cutting, fabrication, screen printing & all that good stuff. I usually pick up a giant 80 cent paper clip for my collection every now and then too. From what i've experienced the staff is pretty knowlegable and friendly. On one occasion i felt like one of the guys was giving me lip because i looked like just some kid, but then the next time i came in the same employee was really nice and cut me a deal on some unmarked scraps, so its all good. the fact that it's an all plastic store is pretty awesome, but i can think of a lot more cool plastic things that i would love to see here, like more nic nacs and maybe some cool plastic letters, so minus 1 because they should up their stock a bit and 1 because they only laser cut with a 100$ minumum, but plus 1 for the free parking also, i dont know what you yuppies are talking about with the 'fumes' in there, its not that noticeable guys. do you complain about the bread smell at the bakery too? read more

For chocolatiers, or baking and pastry students, this is your new best friend! Great place to get plastic tubes for chocolate molding and plastic sheets to design your chocolates.
