I have visited this location more than a dozen times. Not once has an employee looked up from the computer to greet me or other customers even when it's not crowded at all. This is vastly different from the Sausalito location where a customer is actively and warmly engaged. Do the Ferry building employees get trained on ignoring customers? Or do they specifically hire zero customer service individuals? How will they know if a customer is looking to purchase a full 10- piece dining set? They should really invest in the minimal amount of customer service training. They are losing out on business or maybe they just don't care. read more

We met a long-lost relative this past weekend. Actually, we are not related to Michelle Ticknor at Heath Ceramics at the Ferry Building but she certainly treated us like family, down to the friendly teasing when it was deserved. She graciously spent more time with us than we expected on a busy Saturday morning. Her long tenure at Heath makes her the perfect person to discuss ceramics in specific and tableware altogether. We certainly received an education as we were made to feel special when she put together numerous combinations to help us arrive at our final choice. This location is smaller than the others but still has a great selection. We've been coming to the farmer's market on Saturdays lately and have impulsively done some shopping here afterward. The staff here is so kind, offering to put things aside for us when the next shipment comes, talking us out of bad colorway combos that we tried to talk ourselves into, and recommending new colorways to go with our said impulse buys. Great product but really terrible customer service. Literally in the middle of trying to check us out, the woman turned to her colleague and stated "you deal with this" and walked away. Same woman really made it seem that we were inconveniencing her to buy from Heath Ceramics, so I guess we won't again. I love Heath Ceramics and the quality/designs of their products are just incredible. This store location is only the pop up/stall store location and the main store can be located in the Mission District. I was window shopping at the ferry market for the farmers market and decided to take a quick pick at some of the dish selections and table ware. I ended up leaving with a white serving tray at the end. I believe Heath Ceramics is offering a 10% off their bundle packages which sounds like a great deal. Generally, the bundle sets already save one some money, but an extra 10% couldn't hurt anyone. The store employees here are welcoming and are more than happy to help you with your needs. read more

This is a ceramics store focused on plate ware for the table located within the super awesome ferry building. There is effectively no parking. there is the usual street parking, and a small unadvertised parking and loading area by the Ghandi statue in back of the ferry building, but for the like most ferry building related things you are best served by finding a way to get here that does not involve driving a car. Not to big an issue as the ferry building is kind of a transit hub for buses, trams, and of course, ferries. This a smaller store, more of a showroom in some ways, designed to demonstrate the fine high quality ceramic items for on offer. There are some tiles, handbags, throws, jewelry and suchlike, but the true focus is on table/kitchenware. Items can be sold singly, but the true value is in sets. The items are not necessarily handmade, but certainly are low rate production with an emphasis on appearance and functionality. The pricing is not cheap, but well, quality items are never cheap. Typically you'll be looking at the low hundreds into low thousands for sets depending on selection. The quality is such that it will last several lifetimes. If you are looking for dinnerware/kitchenware items that you're great grand kids will happily be using a hundred years from now, this is the place. read more

I understand that this location is such a touristy hectic place but they should aware that there are locals who want to purchase your products, not coming to do window shopping. I was going to come here to get some plates and bowls since I didn't get them from Sausalito location last time I visited. I love ceramics. I've collected them for years and take pleasure in investing in beautiful pieces to use in my kitchen and home. When it comes to buying a travel souvenir they're one of my favourite things to purchase as I'm able to enjoy the memories of the trip each and every time I use the cup/bowl/plate. The ceramics at Heath are lovely. They're robust and practical for every day use, but still have beautiful lines and colours that make you feel special when using them. I bought two mugs a year ago and they've quickly become favourites in my home back in Australia. On my most recent trip to San Francisco I decided another two were the only thing I most wanted to purchase, and I paid a visit to the Ferry Building store one day to quickly pick some up. They've now found a home in our kitchen and bring great pleasure, despite was a hefty price tag (the Aussie dollar doesn't go far in the US these days!) This store isn't as extensive as the one in the Mission, but it's no less lovely. If you're only in the market for one or two things then it's perfectly fine, though I'd head to the other store if you wanted more options and needed to put together a full dinner setting. read more

This is newest location for Heath is a cozy little shop that showcases nearly all their dinnerware and giftware (bud vases, bowls and such). Heath Ceramics has a really great clean and modern design to everything they make. It's rustic but still contemporary. Besides carrying their own ceramics they have some textiles (napkins, place mats and kitchen towels), a charming line of what looks like pickling jars by Weck and an assortment of books. I always admired their look and maybe one day I'll be ready to commit (and able to afford it) to a whole set of plates from Heath. Till then I'll buy a random piece here and there, slowly collecting. By the way, the studio in Sausalito is the only place where you can get "seconds", pieces that have small flaws in their color or shapes. read more

Cute little shop in the Ferry Building! They sell lots of imported ceramics and glassware. We got about 9 different glass jars made in Germany. It had a glass lid, rubber insulation, and metal clasps locking it down. They were pretty inexpensive! I should buy some more! read more

I have been interested in heath for years and finally treated myself to some beautiful mugs! Yippee! I came into San Francisco on the ferry on a Saturday and shopped the amazing weekend farmers market for some fall apples and root vegetables. I stopped by all my favorite artisanal favorites and heath was on my list. I finally settled on some large mugs (originally I wanted the studio mugs, but the large mug offers A more sturdy and comfortable handle and more overall capacity) The staff took the time to carefully wrap my mugs for my travel home on the ferry, they also gave me care instructions and a great tip on a place to grab a beer and snack. (Fort Point Beer Company) Had a great hotdog and beer before hopping back on the ferry home. read more

This is one of my favorite local-made vendors sold in San Francisco! I love the quality of the items they make. During my last shopping visit, I looked at their plates, coffee mugs, bowls, serving platters, bud vases, and various knick-knacks. I love the unique and recognizable design of the dinnerwares. High price does not mean high quality or even good service! Bought some mugs here that cracked with hot water (tea). Staff here "could not do anything" but gave a lecture on the delicacy of stoneware after scrutinizing the mug like they were scientists and pointing out flaws in the glazing that existed the day we got the mug. Just an unpleasant experience all around. (And yes, I think a mug should be able to take hot water.) read more

The quality and design of the products are top notch. However, the customer service at this particular location is highly lacking. I've passed through this store several times and have never been greeted or asked if I need any help. In fact, the workers never even make eye contact with me. There's a certain snobbery I find in their eyes whenever I take a look at the products. It's such a shame that the customer service is not the same quality at the actual product itself. Love Heath but hate condescending people who work at this location! I walked up to this bearded guy behind the counter to ask if they have gift bags. He responded with "here in SF, we charge 10 cents a bag!". I still purchased $200 worth of ceramics, but gave him a piece of my mind. The folks in this store are incredibly helpful. Loved the experience shopping here, talking with the salesperson about mixing and matching color, and brainstorming on new tableware. This outpost inside the Ferry Building is great for general gift and housewarming shopping, and usually displays pieces from the newest line. It's extremely small, think more of a stall than a store, and navigating it can be tough when the there are throngs of people in the building, which is on most days. For a true Heath Experience, I recommend visiting the factory in Sausalito, which is quite large and offers discounted items and factory seconds. read more

My friend had her bridal registry with Heath Ceramics. I ordered her gift on Wednesday online and it said it would go out the next day. I called on Saturday and spoke to Carla and told her I did not receive my order. She told me that the warehouse was backed up and it still had not gone out. While waiting for the Heath Ceramic store in the Ferry Building to open last Friday I noticed a beautiful Garza blanket that I decided to purchase. All of a sudden the stanchion holding the rope to show that the store was closed started to fall on me so I tugged on the rope so it wouldn't fall (thinking that I was helping), then I heard the Heath employee (bald male) scream at me in a very loud and angry tone "Can you please not!" He could have walked over and picked up the stanchion, but he decided to drag it the twenty feet which made the stanchion begin to fall. I was humiliated and it kind of wrecked my mood.
