Tapa's is the black sheep of the Waikiki gay bar scene, but oh boy do I kind of lowkey love it! I remember the days when the floor sagged, feeling like you were going to crash through the ceiling of the restaurant below -- but have no fear, reinforcements are here! No more sagging floor, so feel free to dance your little butts off without the anxiety. The bartenders are all very sweet, friendly, and attentive. Plus, the drinks are strong and pretty damn cheap! Now, I don't smoke cigarettes, but for those that do, there is a fairly impressive patio space that allows for you to continue mingling with your friends without having to leave to smoke downstairs. Tapa's Waikiki feels like the last connection to a bygone era, when Fusions was still open. And I couldn't be happier to be in proximity to such a beautiful memory. read more

First off, I want to recognize Josh as a friendly and gracious bartender. He's a West Virginia transplant who had not forgotten his Southern manners. Otherwise there wasn't much to this quiet, spacious second floor gay bar on Seaside Avenue. Jamie W. and I decided to drop by around 6:30PM, and it was empty except for Josh. We also had read they served hot food. However, the owner had decided not to serve any the evening we were there. Too bad as we were feeling peckish and heard the grub was good. There was a pool table and several lounging areas, so they were ready for play. The bartender Joshua is such a doll! Made our Hawaii trip that much better! Drinks were top notch and what a vibe!! Definitely would love to go back and visit made friends who live back home!! Stopped off here for a night cap. Didn't know about this place till walking by one evening and noticed a rainbow flag. It's not a big place but does pack a good punch. Upstairs, there's a long outdoor seating area before heading to the bar which is inside. A couple of hi top tables inside. Music was great which is always a plus. Both the bartender were amazing. Very sweet and friendly which is a major plus. read more

Great ambiance friendly people!! There is outside seating on the patio so when the weather is nice that's a great place to hangout. The inside is a typical dive bar but clean. There is a pool table in the back. Drinks are great served in glass and are well made but Don't expect fancy drinks here. Bartenders were super attentive and nice. This place felt a lot like cheers with all the regulars. read more

Lol. At first, I thought this was an actual tapas bar, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it was a regular drinking bar. Not that there's anything wrong with tapas bars. I think we visited either on a very slow night or made our trip too early in the evening. I think we arrived at the bar around 8 pm. During our visit, there were only 4-6 other patrons at the bar. Although the bar was quiet, we had a nice chat with the owner and the bartender, who were very friendly. The drink prices were fine for this New Yorker, and I have no complaints. This may not be a big deal for many folks, but I was EXTREMELY pleased that the AC was on full blast. If you want to visit an LGBTQ place that is not super touristy, then Tapas bar is your place. Or, it is a place just to recharge your batteries before heading back out to visit the touristy bars and restaurants. read more

Accidentally stumbled upon this bar and I'm so glad I did! I forget the bartender's name but I know their drag name is "the wicked which of Waikiki." They couldn't have been more welcoming or more funny. Definitely made my first night in Oahu a good one. In addition to the awesome bartender, the food and drinks were good too. The potstickers definitely hit the spot and the drinks were not at all weak. What stood out to me about this bar was the fact that it was in the heart of the touristy part of town but it actually felt like a neighborhood bar. I can't wait to go back here one day. read more

Second story gay bar with a free pool table and good drinks! We got the Li Hing margarita for about $13 and it was so good:) We went on a Thursday evening to play pool and have a cocktail, and it was empty besides one other patron. They periodically have a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights, so it is likely more lively at those times. read more

Customer review; Tapa's is such a fun place. The day of the week does not matter; you'll have fun but Thursday into the weekend is the most exciting. It begins to build up between 7PM and 9:30PM, and hits peak at 10:30PM-11:30PM and will stay that way for awhile. I am a regular for sometime and now have come to befriends all of the bartenders. It is lively and a great place. There are many locals who come that are nice and friendly, including myself. The tourists who come are always friendly and have such exciting stories to tell; Coming here, I have made so many friends that either pass through or live here. I love Victoria and Mono, Zach and Brett, and Axel. If you intend to drop a name, tell them I sent you. :) My name Shun. Those are the people who pull it all together. I consider the above people to be my friends. They are such great people to know and they make the experience so lovely, not even mentioning the lanai with a beautiful view to watch the sunset and look down on the street. My original plan was to gorge myself with tapas at this intimate restaurant / bar in Waikiki. I was heading to Blue Note to see David Sanborn after dinner. The restaurant is laid back and conducive to having to having a conversation, which is always a plus. I was hungry and opted for the dinner special, a large rib-eye steak with potatoes and vegetable. A tasty chimichurra sauce is recommended. Service is friendly and attentive. Give them a try! read more

At 5:45pm-8pm John is an amazing cook for the dinner menu at Tapas Waikiki. The special tonight was a Grilled Chicken Breast Caesar Salad, Shredded Parmesan Cheese and Caesar Dressing. The croutons was toasted, crispy and well seasoned~ The grilled chicken was grilled to perfection, grilled marks and sliced perfectly to eat in bites. Romaine Lettuce rinsed, chopped and tossed in fantastic dressing with the stringy parmesan cheese. You can ask to have the croutons on the side, but otherwise it will be in a ramekin on the side. Pool table from Open to 1:30am!? Would play, participate and compete. One of the last standing LGBTQ+ bars of Kuhio/Seaside since Lojax and Fuision closed. read more

The Honolulu Liquor Commission today announced it shut down Tapas Restaurant & Wine Bar in Waikiki for 24 hours after authorities observed multiple violations. Officials said that at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, commission investigators heard via a 24-hour complaint line that Tapas at 407 Seaside Avenue was not observing social distancing rules. Upon arrival, investigators found a very crowded bar with "absolutely no social distancing occurring," according to a news release. In addition, the majority of bar patrons were not wearing any facial coverings. Honolulu police assisted in closing the establishment and counted about 120 customers exiting the small bar. Tapas was subsequently cited for a violation of the condition of its license. read more

This review is long overdue What a hidden gem in the heart of Waikiki My husband and I decided to get an afternoon cocktail Tapa's was right around the corner so we decided to go there The location is right behind the now closed Angles and Fusion bars The bar area is small and quaint nothing fancy but full of "Aloha!" Picture this: NYE and we're weary travelers on search of a good time and a cover that's not $50+ (hotels are a rip-off). In comes Tapas to save the day. Dope folks. Friendly bartenders. CHEAP drinks. Went to this bar late at night with some friends to grab a drink. It was really close to our air bnb and walking distance so we visited. For our last day being in Hawaii, I am very happy we were able to find this bar and not only that but our bartender victoria was amazing! Victoria set the standards for bartenders even higher with the hospitality and service that was given to us that night. I keep reading good reviews about the weekend crowd; I tried a few times to go during the week, and it was abandoned. Will have to try again some weekend; I can't shake my bias though... a really good bar has SOMETHING going on most weeknights and a little bit of a pulse. read more

They just don't have the space. So we can probably only spend two hours here maximum especially if you're wearing heels although maybe some people can wear heels all day without sitting. The problem and the disappointment is that the drinks are way too expensive. $16 for mediocre drinks that are mostly ice cubes in small plastic cups. And then, if they do have specials, they run out of them. Before the event even starts. That's my biggest problem with this place. This is the only queer space on the island that has weak small drinks. For a high price. That is not a typical culture of a queer space. All the other queer spaces have much larger stronger better drinks, and the prices are lower. It's really a bummer because I will only order one drink here and then if I want to have more drinks go somewhere else. But it's OK shouldn't have to drink to have fun anyway as I suppose. Even the Republic has bigger better drinks, and they're not even a dedicated queer space.

As the night went on, the bar got much busier, but we continued ordering drinks (I had around five, my boyfriend had four), paying for every karaoke song. That didn't make much sense to me, especially since it's a karaoke bar and customers pay for each song they sing. The other bartender working was also putting in multiple songs throughout the night, so it felt like there was a double standard. Another issue was ordering drinks. The bar is extremely small, so after placing our orders, my boyfriend would step a few feet away to make room for other customers to get to the bar while waiting for the drinks to be made. We never left the area--we were literally only a few feet away--but the bartender acted like this was somehow a problem and gave us attitude over it. Toward the end of the night, about 20 minutes before closing, I turned in one last song request for my boyfriend. The bartender told me they weren't taking any more songs, so I simply threw the request away and moved on. Then he came looking for me afterward asking what the song was. At that point, I was over the interaction. Overall, the atmosphere and karaoke were fun, but the customer service really took away from the experience. We spent money on drinks, paid for every song we sang, and treated the staff respectfully. I just expected the same courtesy in return. If you're looking for the bar and you can't find it, if you look up on the second level, you'll see the bar with a flag and there should be a sign on the street that informs where to go to get inside. It is located inside a hotel.

Tapas Lanai Bar is anything but a dive as stated in an earliere reiview. Tapas is your typical old style charm whiich is missing in this day and age. What makes this business stand out for me is coming in on a Friday night and feeling the warmth and welcome, tha aloha, of the staff. On Friday nights is Bear Night, and heading up the bar are two of the most sincere, friendly and I belive both to be a consisitant judge of character. My favorite part of the bar is that it is open air. This brings you back to the days of not so long ago when many of the bars were outdoor bars. Overall, Tapa's may be the one thing keeping me in Hawaii for a little while longer. I go out drinking once a week, if that, and it is just about always on a friday.
