I loved it here because the bartender was amazing. He gets 5 stars but The place however isn't nice to look at. It's small and looks like it hasn't been kept up. The restrooms need a key . This bar opened in 2005 and I had many great memories here with my friends over the years. However the new Bartenders Adam and Brandon completely ruined it for me. On February 1, 2020 I decided to go hang out and have some food and drinks. I ordered a Well rum and coke I paid cash and sat down Adam the new bartender was bartending. He came over and gave me my second drink I handed him $5 because I wasn't aware of the new price hike and wells are always $4 so both drinks were paid for I left the bar walked my dog came back in 15 minutes and ordered another well rum and coke and the Hawaiian Steak pupu. I sat down with my drink and handed Adam $21 $15 for the steak $4 for the well rum and coke. Thats $4 total tip total and I paid fully for the drinks. Adam comes back to me and says that its $29 and that I didn't pay for the first 2 drinks which wasn't true. I paid fully and left a $4 dollar tip included. February 2nd I come back ordered a drink Brandon the new bartender was bartending the bacardi and coke rang up $5.50 I gave him a $20 bill he gives me $9.50 back wait.... thats not the correct change he closed the register and I told him wait I gave you a $20 He opened the register and gave me $5.00 bill back. I then sat down annoyed and brought it to John attention who owns Tapas Lanai bar on a Instagram message because I don't have Johns private number. I wasnt rude and John decides to 86 (kick me out) of the bar completely. This is not cool of you guys I have been going there since it opened yous are rude! you have untrained and dishonest! staff working there. I finally got a chance to check out Tapas. ATMOSPHERE: The main entrance is at the back of the building off the courtyard area (behind Lojax & Fusion.) The bar is split into two sections, the other half housing a pool table room, I believe. The bar section is open-air with big windows that overlook the courtyard. The vibe is super chill, dark, and dreary. There was no entertainment going on, and I'm not sure if there was even background music. THE CROWD: They were dead as a doornail, even on this particular Saturday night. Including me and my friend, there was at the most 6 of us in the entire bar on a Saturday night. FRIDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY !!!! Some guys from Waimanalo brought me over here from Bacchus on Friday night and Tapa's was set up as a banging dance club complete with LED fiber optic whip dancer (we don't have that on Big Island lol..... yet..... I'm ordering my LED fiber optic dance whip from Amazon as I write this hahahaha) and tattooed and friendly go-go boy (man). Drinks were strong and cheap and the staff was great. Bartender asked my name and remembered it all night, twink cocktail water wandered around with tray of jello shots all night which I eventually succumbed to (sorry brain !) It was the best dance club experience I've had in Hawaii yet (RIP Fusion) because it was not trying to be all high-end, it was just dark and unpretentious and fun and high energy. **I had some confusion about this place because the name Tapa's sounds similar to the Spanish word "tapas," but in this case I think the name means it is the business of a Polynesian named Tapa.** read more

Waikiki seems to be changing at a fast pass. Each time I get down there a new condominium or premium shopping plaza has replaced a dingy divey bar or apartment building. Thankfully there are still some relatable places with a nice vibe. Tapa's being one of them. They are a relatively affordable and gay friendly bar located on the second floor of this small building. The main bar is an open air lanai with tons of tables. There is a large second room where all of the karaoke takes place. Usually that is the most crowded part of the bar (depending on the night and time). I like that there are a few tables out front by the entrance which makes it easy for people to smoke and relax. The bartenders are great - always super friendly and attentive and they make great drinks. Not a super heavy pour, but not weak like many of the other (more expensive) places in town. All in all this is a good place to start a fun night (with so many neighboring bars), or a great final stop before you make it a night. read more

We found this gem on our 2nd to last day- wish we'd have found it sooner! This bar is a great little spot, very low key and seems to be a local hangout. The bartenders were amazing! John is a great cook and the weekday dinners are fantastic, but I'm sorry to say the atmosphere here keeps getting worse. It was so pleasant to enjoy a drink on the lanai bar in the tropical breezes, but now the whole place is sealed up and air conditioned. And even on a quiet Sunday evening, the music in the front area was way too loud and even louder in the former lanai bar. Maybe that's why the faithful mature crowd has moved to Bacchus. Tapas is home to the Aloha Bears (http://thealohabears.com/), and this definitely has the feel of a bear den. If you don't know what's a bear, here's Urban Dictionary's definition: "A term used by gay men to describe a husky, large man with a lot of body hair." The roof has aluminum siding and lattice work holding it together, clearly a lanai turned into a bar. Random red Christmas light and whatever promotional items that beer companies send is the decor. Like I said. It's a bear den, wild bears come here to court one another. What makes this place worthwhile is the great staff and the fact that this is the only gay lounge on the island. Couches. I'm talking couches. It makes all the difference. It takes all the pretentiousness out of the gay-bar-dating-scene. You can sit down, have a drink, sing some karaoke, and play pool without feeling like there's a thousand men prowling on you. This bar does some pretty unique events and specials. -Every Friday it's $1 off all drinks if you are a member of Aloha Bears. -Once a month there's a pool tournament. -Every second Sunday there's a catamaran cruise. -Mondays and Thursdays have free karaoke. Entering the den of these bears won't get you mauled, it's actually quite fun. read more

So this is more of a laid back relaxed chill gay bar rather then Angles or Hulas that are usually more packed. On a busy night, you'll see about 30-40 people here. other nights, you'll see a good 10 or so folks. I've been and lived in some of the biggest and gayest cities in the US, i.e. San Fran, L.A, Chicago, Boston, NYC, Fire Island, Orlando, Dallas, and Miami so I've seen all scenes. Hawaii scene is super small as well as closeted so you cant really expect to much here. Service: its amazing, since its a small bar, Bartender really gets 2 know u and what u drink. Dana's usually my dude and he has an amazing personality and nice strong drinks. Apperence: The kareoke and pool room is great cause its like a home atmosphere with black leather couches and a well kept pool table with red curtains. But when you leave that room 2 the bar area, its like the owner took a fence and made it as his roof. Crowd: dont expect to find the young hot guys here, you'll find the laid back, shorts and tshirt guys here just grabbing a beer, shooting pool, and singing. but nonetheless, everyone is pretty polite and easy going. You dont feel like your in a meat market where you feel like people have cards with numbers holding them up as u walk by judging you on apperance, walk, and clothing. Food: havent tried it....so cant say anything about it Overall, its my fav place just because its like my own lil place to hide from the gays but be with the gaus ( as confusing as that sounds ). The best deal for Sunday brunch in town. Local bar with regular customers. It is sort of like the show Cheers where everyone knows your name if you are regular. Nightly dinner specials are good. I really didn't know about this place until a friend of mine started working as a bartender here, after that we have become regulars and go even when he is not working. We always have a great time here and many times find ourself singing karaoke (not me of course but the people that I'm with). Definitely a more mellow gay bar if you want a drink to relax. I work down the street and all my straight coworker friends now go to this bar after work as well lol! We are staying across the street from this establishment and decided to pop in for a drink. The staff is so friendly and inviting, also very personable. Located just right before you get into Waikiki at the Landmark Shops. Parking is easy ($1 an hour), but to find this place is a little difficult. The Food: Their pasta specials are yummy. The meal portions are just right. You won't get too full or feel hungry. It's definitely not enough to share. I like to order the breakfast sandwich which consists of eggs with dices ham in it, tomatoes, lettuce and cheddar cheese, all in a buttery croissant sandwich. The Service: I usually order to go and they are pretty quick. There's only one person (that I've noticed) handling everything upfront. But it doesn't seem to get too busy so you should be okay. The Decor: The decor is okay. Nothing special. There is a bit of a smell there. The Quick Tip: Order the specials well in advance. They sometimes run out pretty fast. Yes, it can be that good. I had heard (and experienced) that some gay bars in Waikiki were friendly towards locals but gave bad service to tourists (cough, Hulas, cough), but that couldn't be further from the truth here. This is a classic gay dive bar (divey in the best ways...meaning cheap, not packed, and friendly as hell). I can here a few nights ago with a few friends and Sheldon was delightful. I came back tonight and both Sheldon and Ty were amazing, and the food was good. I would recommend this place to locals and tourists alike. read more

Hidden gem! The chef and owner changes the menu weekly with different dinner specials. We went in on a night where he made us special Korean nachos that were not on the menu. OMG some of the best nachos I have had ever ever ever. The flavors of the chicken with the kimchee and homemade chips were out of control. The staff was incredible too! Ty took care of us in the dining room with a constant smile on his face. I cannot wait to check it out again for dinner and to take friends. The dining room is small, but quaint.
