In the early '80s, it was a tiny treasure chest of antiques and vintage clothing, where ornate wooden frames leaned against crowded walls and funky lamps were shoved beside stacks of silver trinkets. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, a small group of us would line up outside, waiting for the newly priced donations to hit the floor. When the doors opened, we didn't walk, we charged. The thrill wasn't just in buying something, it was in discovering it. You could furnish an entire home in early-'60s style from that shop alone - shag rugs, macramé curtains, kidney-shaped tables, lava lamps, bar carts, wide-eyed waif prints. It felt like stepping into another era. And if you were lucky and petite, you might even score a designer Prada blazer for the price of lunch. Over the years, thrift shopping became fashionable, and the prices rose with it. The finds are more curated now, the bargains fewer. The Tappan Zee Thrift Shop was a treasure chest back in the days before thrift shopping became trendy. Tucked away in the quiet, still-undiscovered river town of Piermont, it felt like our little secret. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, a small group of us would line up before the doors opened, eager to rummage through the freshly priced donations. I found antique gold lockets, tarnished pitchers and children's cups that revealed sterling silver once polished, wooden poker chips and dice, hand-painted porcelain bowls, even kitschy gems like a tin Popeye lunchbox or miniature metal army men. The treasures were endless and best of all, affordable. I still stop by now and then, hoping to recapture that thrill, but the finds are fewer. Even a beat-up beaded wallet costs about $10. These days there's a designer rack where nothing is under $100., priced more like a consignment shop than a thrift store. I was lucky to score a Prada dress and jacket a few years back--my size, a women's zero, which isn't exactly in demand. It makes me sad to see this once-humble little shop drift into high-end territory. I'll keep going though, my eye is still trained to spot something special. PROS: The people in here are nice and it's very clean and organized. they have many sections to choose from that range for people of all ages. CONS: They only accept cash up to $25 and parking is limited to street parking. It's also cramped inside overall: if you were in the area you should stop on in. Their prices are low for some items and high for others, just depending on what you're looking for as well read more

I am always looking for cute lil' stores whenever we travel, so it was fun to stumble upon the Tappan Zee Thrift Shop after today's pizza-themed Yelp event! This tiny thrift store is home to some awesome vintage and modern finds, and you can spend a great deal of time sifting through the boxes of antique records, old jewelry, and unique clothing! When I say tiny, I mean tiny, though! Be aware that you may need to say "excuse me" a ton of times to other shoppers as you traverse the narrow space, but your efforts will be well worth it when you find your one of a kind treasures! Word to the wise, this shop is cash or check only as payment (no cards of any kind.. sad trombone), so be prepared if you wish to purchase items. I didn't know that, and had to leave behind a cool 1970s kangaroo necklace and Big Lebowski bowling shirt.. but I'll be back soon! With that in mind, Tappan Zee is an awesome shop and a great addition to downtown Piermont! read more

Cute nook in the heart of Piermont. Have been coming here for years, and while the prices have climbed steadily, there are still a few great deals to be had. The space is a little compact, but the items are very well organized. Antiques, knicknacks, kitchenware, and the bigger ticket items are in the front of the store. Shoes are in racks to the left. There are books, handbags, and housewares. Along the right side, there are hanging rails of clothing with a good selection of men's, women's and children's options. There are more women's options along the back two walls. Selection is great and the staff are friendly and courteous. Really appreciate the time and energy they put into caring for this space. Definitely worth a trip if you are a fan of an unusual find and a good deal. read more

This little gem lives in the charming town of Piermont NY. One never knows what treasures you will find. From a great selection of clothing (some designer) to designer bags, you will be quite pleased. Great menswear too. There are toys electronics luggage and a great selection of bestselling books and cds. During every holiday there are related offerings. Lots of glassware plates servers and kitchenware. Lest I forget the jewelry. From costume to very fine rings necklaces etc. read more

OMGosh, Love this store, and love even more the people working there. the items they have are not the ones you find in a goodwill store, it's an upscale town, and upscale donated items, just look at the books offered for sale and you will see what I mean. if the book is a dollar with added tax, I just give them two dollars. All sales are donated to a few good causes and they can give you a list. I donated a few items and they gave me a list of who I would like the sales money to go to.. I let them choose. All very nice people there for sure, love them all. 10 stars !!! read more

I had an unpleasant experience at the thrift shop this afternoon. The cashier overcharged me over $6 and when I politely questioned the total amount, she got very belligerent, refused to check the prices and the total and then started cursing ( ! ) and using very inappropriate language. This was a very unpleasant experience for me. Another volunteer intervened and corrected the error. In the future I am not sure if I will shop there. read more
