Great flavor and presentation. The server, however, was possibly the worst I've ever had. I can't mention him by name because he couldn't even be bothered with greeting us, much less introducing himself. While he kept our waters full, that's about where the service stopped. He was extremely rushed, dismissive, and made no apologies for how long our food took at all. There was a party behind us who had to wait for their food because the poor guy who delivered it tumped the tray, and he spoke to them in a tone that made it feel like it was their fault. Drinks were great and made confidently, like a manhattan, old fashioned, and perfect pear. The bottled Stella was a bit warm. Burger was good and hot and not dry. Chips for the crab bacon dip were excellent, however the dip itself was unenjoyable. The french onion soup was overfilled with mushy bread and the cheese was not browned on top, but the flavor of the broth was good. Came here for dinner with a friend and was very disappointed. I've had Taproot multiple times in the past and always enjoyed the food but tonight was a completely different experience. I ordered a medium well filet that was cooked all the way through (no pink) basically burnt. Ordered two drinks and I didn't taste any alcohol in them I didn't even have a buzz from them. We ordered creamy mushroom & leek soup and the hot rock for appetizers. The soup lacked flavor and could've been served warmer. The meat for the hot rock was so tender and delicious on its own, but again, the soy dipping sauce lacked flavor and seemed watered down. I ordered the drunken pork chop since it wasn't available on a prior visit. It was cooked well, but I didn't get much whiskey or maple flavor. Maybe the sauce needed to be reduced more as it was a bit watery. The grilled asparagus was fine, but the garlic mashed potatoes were bland. Others in my party had the TapRoot burger and 8oz filet of beef tenderloin with crab crust. The burger was enormous. No complaints from them. We were at a high top in the bar area. Upstairs in a brick-walled setting with black tablecloths spread over dining tables, Lobster-Stuffed Mushrooms were a sumptuous starter, along with great complimentary home-baked bread dipped in a pool of Garlic Butter. My table of four devoured two whole loaves. A Bowl of French Onion Soup made with Swiss Cheese was quite tasty. And a BLT Cobb Salad with French Dressing, Bleu Cheese Crumbles, bacon bits, Hard Boiled Egg halves, big avocado slices, Red and Yellow Grape Tomatoes, Mixed Greens, and a Grilled Fantail Shrimp Skewer added for good measure was an excellent--if not unnecessarily overadorned--main dish for me. Meanwhile, Diane enjoyed her creamy Asiago Pasta. One fly was spotted flying near our indoor table. And, our server was late on providing requested paper napkins (to rub off excess Garlic Butter on our hands). Great overall experience. One of Decatur's finer restaurants, we ordered a variety of items and were not disappointed. We began our meal with the Tap Root specialty Hot Rock, cooking very thin slices of quality beef over a super-heated river rock. Perfectly paired with a garlic soy dipping sauce. Our group ordered the Drunken Pork Chop (whose name undersells this fabulous bone-in double chop), Crab Encrusted Cod, Bourbon Glazed Salmon and Hangover Salad. The mains were perfectly prepared, and we enjoyed the sides of grilled asparagus and roasted root vegetables (parsnips, carrots and onions), carmelized to bring out the natuaral sweetness. Our server, Colin, was prompt, efficient and had perfect timing. Water glasses and bread brought almost as we were seated, Colin continued to check on us periodicaly without being intrusive. Cocktails were well-balanced and expertly prepared. Wine list is small but well curated with interesting selections available for most varietals.
