We have been to SMT a couple of times. Pros: 1. Small intimate theater 2. Inexpensive admission fee 3. Plenty of free parking Cons: 1. Performers, costumes, & settings no where near Village Theatre caliber 2. Not many restaurants nearby Unless it's a play we love, SMT is probably not our first choice for local theatre productions. read more

Decent size venue with good acoustics Sarah and I saw Aida here and the venue was pretty good all things considered. The acoustics was decent at the dress circle level but I'm not sure how it is at the balcony level. They also have a camera pointed at the conductor so you can see him passionately conducting the event on a TV screen attached to the balcony railing! Everyone working at the venue are super nice and there is a small cafeteria that sells snacks, coffee, wine and beer. There is venue parking and plenty of street parking so that's one thing not to worry about! We had a good time here and the play was nice for the price we paid for the tickets! Will definitely come back for more shows in the summer! read more

Seattle Musical Theatre - Performing Arts Near Me - Shoreline, Washington

I've always wanted to come here and after hearing people rave about it in a theater focus group I finally made it out. I'm a big fan of live theater and musicals and frequent book-it, the 5th, the Paramount, the village theater, the forest theater, etc. I tend to pay way too much money for most shows and found the prices here to be very reasonable. I hear this is a great place to get a season subscription. I also see them frequently posted on goldstar. Parking was pretty hassle free, there are lots of large lots at Magnasun park. I would have enjoyed some better signage directing me to the theater, but found it eventually. The inside is not shiny and sparkly, but still nice enough and has a real community feel to it. I recall one of the actors complaining they did not have access to their own bathroom. I enjoyed that seating was not assigned in advance, but this does mean you may want to arrive extra early and throw something on your seat to get the best views. It does look like all seats would be good though. read more

My friend and I got a deal from one of the daily deal sites and went to see Legally Blonde last night. This was our first time at SMT. The theatre is on a small scale and with 1 floor seating (~450 people max), but as it is a local theatre, I wasn't expecting it to be too grand anyway. This place is more like a local gem hidden in Seattle's Magnuson Park vicinity. Legally Blonde performance was good and entertaining. The actors and actresses were definitely good talents and suited their assigned role. They were also well-rehearsed. The storyline was good and I like many of their songs which showcased many types of different characters' emotions and contained easily understandable storyline as well as the right amount of humor. I sometimes had a difficult time hearing what the actors/actresses were singing. I sat 3/4 to the back in a center seat and the background music/orchestra was sometimes louder than performers' voices. Also, seeing that the orchestra is to the front left of the theatre, I would not want to be seated there (not sure if people who seated there could really hear the song as orchestra was a bit loud). One suggestion for this theatre is that they should to never let a baby inside certain types of performance that are not geared towards children (ok, unless it's like Christmas carol or Nutcracker type of performances). The Legally Blonde performance my friend and I saw (7:30pm admission), at one point, had a baby in a seating area making loud noises (although not crying and just murmuring...) for 15 consecutive minutes....that was a real nuisance to me (and other people, too)... read more

I'd never heard of Seattle Musical Theater until I took advantage of the LivingSocial deal to buy a few vouchers for their production of Into the Woods. I emailed the box office for our tickets and when we had a conflict with the original date, they were more than accommodating about changing nights. We had center stage, 4th row seats to boot! No one is going to mistake SMT for a full-scale Broadway production, but I thought they did really well, especially considering how tricky Into the Woods can be with its counterpoints, staging, and timing. There were a couple little flubs here and there with props and lines, but that was to be expected given it was opening night. Most of the actors were fantastic, but Little Red Riding Hood stole the show! I also really enjoyed the over-the-top acting by the Wolf/Cinderella's Prince. If you're a fan of musical theater, I definitely recommend checking them out, especially if you can get your hands on a discount (they also ran a Groupon deal recently). read more

Seattle Musical Theatre - Into the Woods set - Performing Arts Near Me - Shoreline, Washington

Today was the first time I ever attended a show at the SMT. Where the heck have I been??? If you like music theater - GOOD music theater, - at a really great price, this is a wonderful place! My family was so impressed! Had a Goldstar deal to see "The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee". I was a little afraid of the drive here; I have a bit of a phobia of driving to unfamiliar places, especially in Seattle, but it was easy as pie getting to Magnussen Park, and the theater inside. Parking was super easy on the street. The staff inside the building were friendly and helpful. Wine was served, and snacks and soda as well (that could be brought inside. Bonus!). Not sure of the price of the wine, but the snacks and soda were only a buck each. The theater itself was larger than I expected, immaculate, and while not plush, it was well laid-out and the seats were comfy with lots of legroom. I volunteered to be one of the "spellers" in the spelling bee. I got to go on stage and spell words (it was very humbling! LOL. I was the first to mis-spell a word. Granted, I didn't get "cow" or "receipt" but instead was given some obscure word that I'd never heard of before. Oh well). Chatting briefly to the cast on stage, man, they were super nice, allaying any fears I had. And talented? Wow, they were amazingly good: strong voices, strong stage presence, strong acting. There were no perceptible gaffes at all. And there were live musicians too, and they were also excellent. I like supporting local talent. These folks were great. I'm already looking up what future shows my family can see here. Go! read more

I went to go see Legally Blonde the musical here with my sister and friend. The seats are comfy but my friend informed me that half of the ladies restroom stalls were out of order. There aren't any "bad" seats because it is quite small so you can see fairly well anywhere you sit. The acting was fine and orchestra was good, but the audio and sound in this building was a bit difficult to hear. You definitely get what you pay for and I hope the SMT will find funding to become better with set and production. overall, the actors/actresses/"they" did great and the staff are friendly. I love this theatre in Magnuson Park! Not only is it conveniently located, but there is always plenty of parking, and there's a bus stop right outside on Sand Point Way. The stadium-esque seating allows you to always have a seat where you can see the full stage at all times. While the seats are not the most comfortable (you can feel the springs) the experience is quite decent for what you pay for tickets. I like that they mostly let you self-select your seats and that the talent that comes through here is incredible! I have seen more musicals than I can count at this theatre and plan to keep doing so for many seasons to come! So far my favorites have been Gypsy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and South Pacific. Keep up the great work with casting, lighting, sound, and wardrobe! You all are doing a fantastic job! read more

I have been frequenting SMT's performances for the last 4-5 shows because my dear friend Christine has been involved in several musicals throughout 2011-2012. I saw Chicago, Hairspray and A Chorus Line this past season and each performance went off without a hitch. The performers are quite talented and have a broad range of experience, and the ticket prices are very reasonable, especially when you catch a LivingSocial deal, which have been available to buy for each performance when I planned ahead. Most importantly, the customer service in ticket sales is great. I forgot to buy a Living Social when all my friends did, and when it came time I had to pay full price for a ticket, which was fine with me considering how much I have saved on the coupons overall. The day after I bought my full price ticket the next Living Social deal went on sale, and I asked over email if I could refund my ticket to buy the living social. After I didn't hear back for a few hours, I assumed it was a lost cause and I was asking for too much. Later that night, I got a response that they had tried as hard as they could to keep my check from being deposited, I had just mailed it the day before, and it was already on the way to the bank when I sent my email. I could tell from her email string he forwarded me that they had gone above and beyond to try to help me save $10, and while I ended up still paying full price, you don't see people try THAT hard for you in customer service very often these days. I am a big fan of supporting SMT, their actors and their volunteers. DISCLAIMER: not all shows are kid-friendly. Several shows are true to their broadway nature and have adult language and context. The bf got us tickets to see The Drowsy Chaperone (his first live musical, ever) and though he wasn't a huge fan (eh, what can you do. You can lead a horse to a show, but can't make him enjoy it), I actually had a good time. I consider myself a huge performing arts critic, and for what it was, I give SMT two thumbs up. Most of the performers were excellent. Well-trained, professional, etc. A couple of them were a little flat, but hey, this isn't Broadway. It was a clean, well-rehearsed show. Well that was painful. I remember when I was in elementary school doing a French Horn recital with a bunch of other students. We sounded like wounded cats, but when we were done we were all applauded. That pretty much sums up my experience with the SMT today during a matinee performance of Young Frankenstein. We clapped because we had to. We laughed only when we were reminded of the movie. Two of the female leads struggled mightily to find their notes. One failed utterly (Frau Bluecher). Even the wine was difficult to drink, and 3/4 of the plastic cup made its way into the garbage. The only saving grace that made us wait until intermission to leave instead of half-way through Act 1 was the brilliant performance of Igor. Don't celebrate mediocrity. Don't rate something just because "every performance deserves an ovation". Some don't. The Seattle Musical Theatre least of all. read more

Located in Magnuson Park, it was super easy to get to. There was plenty of free parking, street and otherwise. The lobby is a little crowded at times, but hey, that's just part of the experience I guess. They offer a few items to eat and drink, including wine, reasonably priced all things considered. The theater seating area is very comfortable with plenty of leg room. Unless you the person is in front of you is outrageously tall, or you are ridiculously short, the seating pitch is just right so that you can see the stage unobstructed, i.e. free from big heads & big heads of hair. I have only been to one show so far, but I would highly suggest dressing in layers, it's like a hot box in there, and virtually no air flow. I really enjoyed the production of Legally Blonde, it was great! I will definitely be back and am looking forward to futures shows! read more

Very nice theater, with comfortable seats and good sight lines. Plenty of parking is available on the street and in the back lot (which is a bit of a walk). The front of the house staff were all super nice and helpful. They sell snacks, water and sodas that you can take in for the performance. They were not selling alcohol when we went however the house manager said they were expecting to have their liquor license in place in the next few days. The performance was fun and the performers were very good (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). There was one gaffe when someone's microphone was left on a moment too long and we got some chatter, but other than that everything was very professional. Saw Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat at SMT. What a great show! I read previous reviews that mentioned sound problems, but these had obviously been corrected by the time a saw the show. Technically nearly flawless. The talent??! Oh my word, these young actors were amazing. Several are Broadway worthy and I see a lot of shows there. Colin Briskey, Garrett Dil and Claire Idstrom are all amazing vocal talents. See them while you can, they are destined for the bigger world. If SMT keeps on putting on shows of this caliber they are destined for success. read more

Great neighborhood venue! Located in Magnason Park, it was easy to get to with plenty of free parking. The theatre seating area is very comfortable with plenty of leg room. The pitch is just right so that you can actually see over the person in front of you. I would suggest dressing in layers, as it gets quite warm and there is not much air flow. Overall I thought it was a very nice experience, and look forward to futures shows! read more

My family and I are in Seattle for a trip and was out touring all day, I was looking for something for us to do or see when I came across Mama Mia at this theater on Goldstar. Tickets had sold out on Goldstar 's site so I purchased tickets through this theater directly. We were given a 20% discount for purchase of 5 or more tickets so that was a nice surprise. Now I've seen Broadway musicals in Mew York, shows at the Pantages in LA, the larger theater so when we walked up to this theater, you should've seen the look of disappointment on my family's faces, my 10 and 12 year old niece was there and this was going to be their first musical, my brother and boyfriend was also present. They all laughed at me for buying tix "mistakenly" at this community theater but let me tell you, they all loved the show, we all loved the show including my boyfriend who has seen this show 5 times at major theaters. He said that this had some funny twist that wasn't in the shows he's seen. We all had a good laugh, the show was so entertaining, we would've paid more for see it. This is the little theater that could, we all left feeling great, sometimes bigger isn't better. read more

To quote Mel Brooks: "We sat there sighing Groaning and crying There's no denying It's the worst show in town" * * * THE VENUE: First, a few words here. This is an older part of town. Naturally, the venue itself is old (but then again, that does not make 5th Avenue Theatre any worse, right?). - However, Seattle Musical Theatre is hidden inside Magnuson Park. No, seriously - it is hidden. Even if you do manage to drive past the building after following sparse signage posted near the park entrance, you will just keep driving. There is no signage. There are no lights (did someone die on Broadway, so they turned the lights off?) There are no posters of the show outside. Your only luck is to remember that the address is "Building 47". Oh, and it is actually marked as "Community Center". - There is plenty of free street parking, though. Probably because nobody is there. - Once you are inside, you will see a small lobby with refreshments (bring cash only... then again, don't bring it at all, there are cookies and strange-tasting wine. Very rare - "red") - The stage is tiny, but the actors make do. The auditorium is small, but has two levels. Acoustics, though , is strange: all actors are wearing mikes attached to their backs, while sound director blasts you with amplified decibels from side speakers. Mark this last one, because this is what you will regret the most. THE SHOW So, how exactly do you screw up a piece by Mel Brooks? I bet when the show was launched on Broadway in 2007, they did not count that one day it will come back to stage in its city of birth, Seattle, and reek. First and foremost: their Igor (Noah Duffy) is spectacular. Then again, he is the only seasoned actor in this play who has any serious credentials. And even he cannot save this wreck of a play. Note to the director: when your female lead singers sound like cheese grinders, when off-key singing is covered up by doing it really loudly, when most of your cast could beat William Shatner in Overacting Olympics, when your chorus is out of synch - it does not make good comedy any better. In fact, it ruins screenplay writer's genius work. The visual and audible assault had to stop and someone had to leave. Obviously, the actors would not do it, so we did during the Intermission. read more

Oh SMT, how do I rate thee? I will rate the show with the theater. For Seattle, SMT is better than average. I saw Hairspray which was a huge production, not so much with set design expense, but the cast was rather LARGE. The theater is a bit hard to find so I suggest going toward Magnusson Dog Park and following the other cars once you enter the Sand Point nature preserve. If you want to change your tickets for another night, they charge you $10 for each ticket, so make sure when you schedule a month in advance, that you are SURE that nothing will come up. The seats aren't super comfortable, but you do have sufficient leg/arm room. I liked the size and shape of theater, though if you are all the way on the right or the left of the theater, you may not be able to see the entire set. read more

This was without a doubt the worst quality production I have ever had the misfortune of seeing. My entire group left at intermission because we couldn't stand it, (and as a rule I never leave until the end of a show no matter how much I might dislike it). I was extremely frustrated I was not able to get my money back and I was embarrassed on behalf of everyone who put their names to this theater. I will definitely not go back and not recommend it to anyone!! The only upside was that there is free street parking. read more

I bought some group on tickets to go and see the Alter Boys. I did not know what to expect. I do love theatre and plays. This was a well designed play put together by some young kids. My wife and I really enjoyed their energy. It was just a great play. I am giving 5 starts because of the performance. However, I read another review about other people who are being rude or disrespectful at this theatre. Well, my only issue is that there was four rude people sitting behind me who decided to pull out snacks and had the snap, crackle, pop bag noise going on. It was just irritating. I really wanted to say something, I didn't because my experience and enjoyment for the afternoon would've been ruined. I am mentioning this because there are no rules at this theatre other than turn you phones off. Parking was very easy. Over all I am very happy I went to see this play. read more

Last Saturday night I had the pleasure of seeing "She Loves Me" at the Seattle Musical Theatre. I was blown away by the performances and the professionalism of the entire cast. It was great musical theatre. Laura Medford was a revelation in the role of Amalia bringing talent and energy to the role. I would love to see her in Mary Poppins! Although Alter Boyz was the the best production I've been to, the 4 stars is a combination of that performance as well as my support for local theatre such as SMT. This is my first show for SMT and although not quite the caliber of Book of Mormon, I did enjoy the off-Broadway character of it as well as the underlying Catholic humor as I was raise Roman Catholic and was in one of those jump and sing for Jesus kind of youth group back in the day. I guess I was expecting more irreverent high-larity and for the Seattle crowd this was a pretty tame show...the audience was a weird mix of groups of gays scattered in a sea of alot of elderly folks straight from a suburban Texan town...the older ladies sitting next to us gave us mixed signals cause they looked rude but were pretty nice once you start a convo with them...and being this is a story of some young Catholic boys starting a boy band, it was a bit awkward seeing these older folks googling over them (especially the older gays front row center lol). The musical itself has no elaborate set design nor props and just relies on the talent of the 5 guys on stage...and yes they were all triple threats, singing, dancing, and acting for all were excellent and give them props for nightly dishing out this somewhat tired story...again this is Seattle so they could have taken some artistic license and amp up say the sexuality or content up a notch...there's freaking burlesque shows in Belltown for crying out loud! .... and the theatre...eh, reminds me of a high school theatre but plus points for having beer and wine AND being able to bring it to your seat and not just drink it in the lobby. Loved the sign language duo for the gay hearing impaired front row right section...so overall nay to the Alter Boyz musical itself, applause for the actors (especially the cute lead singer ;) ), meh to the Magnuson Park theatre, and YAY to Seattle Musical Theatre for always promoting the arts! read more

My wife and I enjoyed recent performances of "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" and "Young Frankestein." The productions were fun to watch and very well done. The acting and singing, accompanied by a small group of musicians, have been wonderful. We marveled at the high levels of energy and enthusiasm exuded by the actors. The volunteers that staff the theatre for performances are friendly and service-oriented. I will continue to attend performances at SMT. read more
