All our tacos topped with lettuce and a creamy salsa!

I am always on the search for authentic Mexican food while living on the East Coast and I had this hankering for tacos today! My partner in crime lives in Camden and we wanted try a restaurant locally because of the diverse Hispanic community in the city and found this place in Cramer Hill! The menu itself is no frills with options for tacos, tortas (Mexican version of a sandwich, but better), burritos, enchiladas with any type of meat filing you can imagine! It was definitely hard to make a decision! Anyways, the food was incredible! We got a plate with a variety of tacos and split the Milanesa torta with chicken! The salsas that they served alongside the tacos were a chipotle red salsa and this spicy green avocado and green chile salsa! Oh I could have drank this on its own. So effin' good. The tacos fillings were all deliciously prepared and left us wanting more. The Milanesa Torta had a perfectly toasted roll with delicious avocado, tomato, lettuce, and jalapeños! I can't wait to go back and try more things off this menu!

I used to frequent their smaller locale.... and though the prices have changed the food is as delicious and authentic as ever! Freshly made nachos chips with as ordered guac are a must have. Lots of tacos varieties, my favorite is carnitas and al pastor with a touch of the zesty green sauce.

I have been to the Taquiera Calpenas at the Camden and Columbus Flea Market locations. The tacos are fresh, stuffed, reasonably priced and delicious. My favorites ones are the steak, chicken, pastor and carnitas.

    Chicken, carnitas and suadero tacos

I came to LaCalpena if they're trying their food at the Columbus market. I loved their tacos. Always dug the green salsa and the chiles in vinegar. I finally mustered up the courage to try their store in Camden New Jersey. I got two chicken tostadas and four tacos. Absolutely slammin'. Watch for bones or gristle in meats but that should be assumed. My buddy got carnitas and did a thorough dissection of them. He got suadero also and said they were great. Well the menu said 2.50 a taco and the bill said 3. This made my order 20 instead of 16.50 but the guy there was cool. He stated they had new prices. You can't list one thing and charge another so the guy admirably fixed it. He also tossed me a chilis n minaga. Amazing. I'll go back no doubt. Good holding of ordering discrepancy by the person at the store.

    Thursday night stop!

Taqueria La Calpeña - Camden, NJ Mexican, dine-in, carry out, children friendly, street parking, moderately priced Pros (+) No frills, fresh, made-to-order, friendly staff, cards accepted, family owned & operated, clean Cons (-) Unassuming storefront, dim lighting, neutral décor, +/- dry The taqueria is a quick turn off of 27th street, and slightly reclusive. Taqueria La Calpeña's menu is simple while including all of the essentials. Service is swift and the clientele, welcoming. Family, friends, and couples alike comingled at dinner on a Thursday night. The group and I shared an array of chicken, carnitas, shrimp, and beef tacos--it's easy to down a few of these without noticing. When our loaded burritos and quesadillas started arriving, we realized our eyes may have been bigger than our stomachs. This store is dry, but there are a variety of specialty beverages to supplement fountain drinks. We washed tacos down with a spicy horchata; a strange mix perhaps, but fun nonetheless. Taqueria La Calpeña's hours are wide enough to accommodate early lunch and a late dinner. Carry out is easy and quick enough, too, for when you're on the run. The vibe here isn't overly formal, and it also isn't overtly casual. Instead, the experience is pretty black and white. For instance, it may not be the best spot for extended visits or special occasions, but it's certainly an easy Friday night dinner spot for the family. It's like Chipotle, but with table service. Certainly a spot to check out for any Mexican-loving eater. Verdict: Tasty and reliable Mexican for daily visits with family and friends alike. ^MR ----------------------------------------- Taqueria La Calpeña - Camden, NJ Pros Delicious food Quick service Nice/Accommodating Staff Large portion size Cons A little too dim/dark in the dining area Not very lively A bit Pricey Dry; does not service alcohol Time, Date Thursday April 20, 2017 . 6:00pm Taqueria La Calpena was a pretty decent place to sit down and have some authentic Mexican food. I went with two other friends and we filled up good with some soft tacos and burritos and scrumptious cup of horchata. I am sure everyone is happy with a bellyful of food when they go out, so wonder no more if you are looking for the right spot! Here, the portion sizes are pretty generous and meaty if you are into that sort of thing. On top of that, the workers are very friendly although their English is not that great, they know enough to communicate and take care of you. The service is quick and fast and you do not feel like you are waiting an eternity for your meal. The downside is the lighting of the place. I do not know if it was just that evening they decided to be that dim but it wasn't very endearing. Also although the staff was welcoming, the venue did not seem very hyper as I am used to in other Mexican restaurants. I give it leeway to think it is because it is family owned. But apart from those two things, this place is awesome. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. It's delicious and it will fill you up. It may be a bit pricey but hey, people have bills to pay, right? JL

Although I had to throw away those shoes , that jerk chicken platter was worth it. Baby! This is hands down the best in Philly. Every bite taste like I was back in Jamaica. The curry chicken was sold out (a good sign), so now I have the perfect excuse to come back. The owner was warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. Which was a bit contradicting if you know the rude customer service / good food theory. but anyways ... The ambiance is giving Jamaican Jerk Hut - definitely authentic taste and vibes. call ahead and time your pickup just right. Those PPA drivers definitely have a system in that grocery store lot. Great portion size of salmon and not drowning in sauce. The greens seasoned and not spicy. I have had greens from other restaurants where they make the greens spicy. It was a pleasant surprise not to have a "kick" to my greens. The candied yams were nice and soft and now drowning in syrup. Just the way I like it. I look forward to trying something else on the menu.

I made a fool of myself wolfing it down. And guess what? I would do it again, and again, and - you get my point. Don't second guess it, just one.

The crust was flakey and terrific. I could eat these all day. The Croquw Monsieur came with homemade creamed cabbage, which was tangy and tasty. I also tried a chocolate almond pie. This was also very good. The chocolate was dark and rich, and paired well with the almond. The pie was served with whipped cream, which tasted homemade. While the chocolate pie was good, I don't think I would order it again. I was interested in the description, but I tend to prefer fruit pies, and I am kicking myself for not trying their apple pie. Soon. I tried Pie-Stand recently at the Chinatown Night Market. My understanding is that they are typically in Fishtown. I'm not sure if the pies were changed at all for the night market, but I tried two hand pies. I think I paid something like $12 for 2 pies. The owners, or staff, or whoever was in the stand were really friendly and seemed passionate about what they do. I can't wait to try some more of their pies. I'll keep a look out whenever I am in Fishtown.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!…read more Ice cream is one of those enigmatic desserts that I've eaten over 51 varieties of, had as mochi, ordered from out of store and bicycles, and even had with random ingredients like sriracha and bacon. But despite this there was just something about the prospect of having it deep fried and without the end result being a messy puddle that was kind of off putting. But even so there was just something about ordering from that custom surfboard menu and looking at their smiling logo with a cherry on top that made it hard to pass up. Especially when I read about their Astro-S'more: a variation of the campfire classic that deep fried vanilla ice cream in a brownie with graham cracker crust, and topped it off with fudge sauce and toasted marshmallows! The above result was as amazing as it sounds, but I think the even better result might have happened on my 2nd visit during the Newbold Blues Festival when I savored a fried green tea ice cream sundae with corn flakes, lavender cake, honey, and green tea pocky! Looking at the menu further reveals even more inspired sundaes like one that pays homage to your favorite breakfast cereals of yester youth, and another inspired by warm apple pie. They even have ICE CREAM PIEROGIES! Moon Dawg Sundaes being a mobile operation only means that you'll only find them at festivals and popping up at some of your favorite breweries. They also added two green tea pocky sticks. It was really delicious, the ice cream was creamy and the fried part was super well done. All of the flavors came together harmoniously and nicely. A very cute street food to get indeed. The one thing I think that has to be said is that it's definitely a littleee pricey for the portion size ($8 total for this lil eggroll-sized guy, I split mine with my partner and ate my half in an entire bite). I'd be really curious to try the other flavors for sure, but I just don't know if I'd want to dish out $8 each time for something I can eat in seconds. I do really love the taste and concept of this super creative fried ice cream that goes beyond just your standard carnival fried ice cream and would recommend you get it at least once.
