Came here this past weekend for a friend's b'day dinner. Love how pretty much everything here is homemade and fresh! From the guac, the tortillas, the aguas frescas, and more! I had the Carne Asada Fajitas with pinto beans, salad, rice, and tortillas. Everything tasted great, but I feel that the carne asada could've been seasoned a little more. The prices are reasonable for the generous amount of food you're served. I'm not from the San Bruno/650 area, but if I'm ever around there again, I wouldn't mind going back to maybe try their fish tacos. Nice staff, too! It was a little loud, though, as there was someone singing at the bar and another gentleman was playing music near our table, haha. I have made a couple of visits since my first time here even though I said I wouldn't return, it has made a huge turn for the better. The staff as soon as you walk in has been friendly and inviting. The servers are attentive and knowledgeable about the different dishes that are offered. The kitchen is always super busy making sure the orders are made to perfection. At the center of the restaurant is the pupusa work station that makes fresh as you order flavorful food. Our server was busy helping other tables but she still made sure our table was taken care of. Very impressed with the major changes since my first visit. Excellent food with great service, giving them a chance to do better and they definitely have. read more

Taqueria Leon catered my niece's birthday party and they were just fantastic! The chicken, carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor were delicious. They made tacos, quesadillas, rice, beans, and tortas. I've been looking for some good burrito spots in San Bruno and stumbled upon this gem! The architecture of the building itself is pretty cool but the real hit was the Al pastor burrito I got! I did not have high hopes for this place because it wasn't busy but my expectations were beat by miles! Ehh... I can't say I was a fan. I asked for the regular tacos, but received (and was charged for) the "super tacos" which has sour cream, beans, guacamole, and cheese. I got the carne asada and carnitas. These weren't really worth $6.99 each. The carne asada was dry and didn't taste like the meat was marinated. The carnitas was okay, but the flavor was ruined by the sour cream. I also thought it was weird that they use flour vs corn tortillas. Also, I wasn't a fan of their 3% credit card fee. I wish this was mentioned BEFORE handing over my credit card. I noticed the sign as signing my receipt (which wasn't itemized), so I didn't realize that I was being charged for the incorrect tacos. Lastly, there wasn't a salsa bar. We did receive some chips and a cup of very mild salsa though. It would have been nice to have been given a variety of salsas to eat with the tacos. read more

Came in with the family yesterday as we were referred by my sister in law. Walking in the front door you see how clean the restaurant is. The staff was so very friendly. It was a nice comfortable environment. The restrooms were clean as well and that's a huge plus. I got the emoladas which is enchiladas with mole sauce and rice only. I do not like beans much. Mole is my most favorite food and it is hard to find a place that makes it the way my grandmother does. I do not like the sweet mole. The mole from here was almost exactly like my grandmas, the taste and texture. The rice was also so good. I also got an horchata and it was tasty, perfectly made as I do not really like sweet stuff. This was made to perfection, it did not taste sweet at all. The food is reasonably priced as the taste makes it well worth it, as well as the customer service. My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place while we were on a vacation for San Francisco, and we are glad we did! We both love tacos and have tried as many taco places as we can everywhere we travel (multiple states/cities). Out of all the combined taquerias we've been to, we agreed this place has the best Al Pastor tacos we've had. It was so flavorful, juicy and tender. We were really blown away with how good all the meats were however the Al Pastor was definitely the best. Honestly it was so good that even though I had really bad TMJ pain/soreness for a day during our trip, I had to come back to eat the Al Pastor tacos before we left. It physically hurt to talk let alone chew, I still grit my teeth (pun intended) and ate my tacos because it was worth the pain. That was months ago and to this day after trying even more tacos, we haven't found a better Al Pastor. read more

I ordered from Taqueria Leon off Doordash so I didn't get to experience any other aspects of here aside from just the food. Obviously the food also won't be as fresh when it is being delivered from a long distance, but overall the food was pretty solid and just under a 4 star rating for me. I was craving some birria tacos and the ones at Taqueria Leon seem to be highly regarded so I wanted to try them out. I ordered the Quesabirria ($6.99 each) and the Cabeza Regular Taco ($3.49). Quesabirria at most taquerias in the Bay Area are pretty steep price wise, but this is already cheaper than other places I've seen. The Quesabirria here are pretty solid and it came with their Consomé which had a lot of flavor especially when you squeeze a lime into it. Its hard to give a full accurate opinion because they did get a little soggy from the delivery, but the Quesabirria still had plenty of flavor and they don't skimp out on the cheese which is nice. Overall a 8/10 for me. The Cabeza Regular Taco came in tin foil wrap and the toppings fell apart in the packaging, but the flavor of the Cabeza was still nice as it was very tame and flavorful. If you like oxtail you would like this a lot. Their tortilla for their tacos could be better and I don't love their salsas, but I enjoy their meats overall. 7.5/10 They also provided chips and salsa for free, but I wasn't personally a fan of their salsas and their chips were a bit too salty. Regardless I won't let it affect my review since they were free. I thought the food at Taqueria Leon was solid overall, but I wouldn't rank it higher than some of my other favorite Taquerias in the Bay. read more

I had been wanting to try this place for a while. I came with my family and we got some pupusas. We ate them and saved one for our son. As our son was eating his pupusa, he said hey mom there's a hair on my pupusa. He passed it to me and sure enough there was a hair inside it. He had been biting into it and this hair went in one side and out the other. It was straight and black. My son has curly hair. We felt sick after this. Who knows if we are any hairs before this and this hair was clearly cooked into the pupusa. We ate ours with forks and knives and cover with the cabbage so we didn't see inside. Came by on a Saturday for an early dinner with the kids - I saw the sign for weekend homemade pupusas. There's an enclosed front patio with a tarp overhang and we sat outside. I was originally going to wait in line to order at the counter but one of the staff said if we were eating there that they'd come to us, so I let them know we were sitting out front. Chips and salsa were yummy - chips seemed homemade, thick cut and freshly fried. Yummmm. Our order: * 5 pupusas: revuelta, and cheese/loroco. These pupusas are HUGE. Love the melty cheese that crisps up on the griddle from the loroco ones. Side bowl of salsa and curtido. I wish there was a bit more curtido for our five ginormous pupusas but next time I'll just ask for a bit extra. Super filling, delicious, exactly what we were craving. Kids liked the novelty of seeing them handmake the pupusas right in the middle of the inside dining area. * plato de asada: came on a skillet with peppers/onions, kind of fajita style. Came with a big side of rice/beans, and three homemade tortillas. Definitely a huge portion. The steak/veg was a bit on the greasy side but it was well seasoned and had good flavor. It reheated really well the next day; the beef wasn't tough at all. Rice and beans were good! * carnitas super nachos: also a hefty portion and great for sharing. Did not skimp on the meat. The guac is pretty tomato heavy. We liked the strips of sliced pickled jalapeño and carrots. * pineapple agua fresca: sweet and refreshing! Overall it was all very tasty and maybe because we went when there wasn't a line, but I thought the food came out at a reasonable time. I did have to go inside to tell the staff we were ready to pay, but other than that it was a tasty and pleasant experience. Will definitely be back sometime to continue taking advantage of outdoor seating and homemade pupusas on weekends! When I first walked in I was cool this looks like a nice place and the seats really cool. I noticed their tv screen did not have anything showing the prices of their food. I Shrimp Super Burrito was good But... I asked for a Super Burrito with Extra Crema Pero no tengo nada. So I decided to to go to the counter to ask for Crema because as I said it didn't have any and I payed for a Shrimp Super Burrito. One of the guys gave me some in a small container and was like cool. I also asked what the orange sauce was and the other guy said it's habanero so I said cool. A really chill spot to grab food to go or sit and eat. Everyone here is really friendly, and chips and sauce hit the table as soon as you sit down which is always nice. Their menu is quite extensive, but this time I settled on the quesabirria and a pupusa. Quesabirria - It was stacked with tender meat and cheese. I wish they could have fried the taco a little more on both sides to build a crust though because the excess oil and moisture was weakening the tortilla to the point where it completely broke apart in my hands. The consomme was quite flavorful though and definitely add the flavor the taco was missing on its own. Pupusa - When I walked in I saw someone making fresh pupusas on a flat top in the dining room. Decided to finally check out one of the Mexican restaurants in my area! I'm not a pro on Mexican food but this place looked fun because it had more than just the usual dishes. The ramen Birria sounded fun. It wasn't my favorite as it felt very heavy and oily (from the meat) and the noodles were pretty much what you get from those super cheap packets. I wouldn't order this again. However, I'm still giving them 4 stars because the other two dishes I got to try were great! The nachos were loaded and didn't have a dry chip! It was also nice that even with delivery the chips weren't soggy! Good nachos and a must if you are craving them. But the star dish is hands down the Huarache!!! I tried the tinga which was sooooo delicious!!! The tortilla at the bottom had an amazing texture and was nice and thick. And it was loaded with rice, beans, tinga, lettuce, and salsa. Using arriving there was no line and we were able to dine in safely. The employees were professional and kind. The food was delicious. I ordered Camarones a la Diablo. Only down side is I wish I would have gotten beans in stead of French fries but I would say that is personal preference. My partner ordered a shrimp burrito and he said hands down, best burrito he had in a lonnng time. Service was exceptional and came over to ask us if we needed anything. Food was served in a reasonable time. Salsa and michelada was outstanding. HUGE Portions! I was craving authentic Birria Tacos and made my way to Taqueria Leon in San Mateo. I came right when they opened so there were plenty of outdoor seating and not too many people in the queue. The neighborhood had tons of parking so I wouldn't worry about finding parking in the surrounding area. I ordered 3 Birria Tacos and got my order pretty quickly. Once I got my order I was amazed at how huge the portions were. I guess I'm just used to San Francisco Birria Taco sizes. Always order ahead but they never have the order ready on time and then get confused when I ask about the order. Tonight they lost my business though. The lady that started the order (started at the pick up time I was given, when I got there, not ready at the pick time). She then left my order in the middle of it. Then the cook finished cooking it and wrapping it then he left. And then a new guy came in and saw us sitting there and the food sitting there and had to call the lady back out. That took like another 5 to 10 minutes. Don't understand such rude service and no acknowledgement that they messed up or have a customer waiting, almost an hour for a to go order to be ready. HORRIBLE RUDE SERVICE. The workers either disappear or are hanging out having dinner themselves ignoring customers. We ordered the super shrimp quesadilla, four birria tacos, four quesabirria tacos, a side of red rice, and horchata all for $55. Super shrimp quesadilla: This was SO good and I would have recommended but I definitely got turned away from this when I noticed that they do NOT devein their shrimp!!! They cook their shrimp with the shell still on and while you can't taste the hardness of the shell, it shows that they don't clean their shrimp and thinking about eating their feces doesn't sit right with me. Not deveining is what made me give this place a 4/5 stars instead of a 5/5! If you don't care about that though, they add a lot of cheese and it's the size of a burrito and looks like a burrito too! Even though we ordered a quesadilla, it was basically a shrimp burrito. Definitely worth the price and the flavors were great! Would not get again because of the lack of deveining though Birria tacos: just your standard birria tacos, order consome on the side because they're super dry without it.
