Hmmm. I read the other reviews (both ordered burritos - I didn't) but I had a different experience. I ordered two tacos (chile verde and chorizo) and my friend ordered a side of refried beans and we loved it. In fact, my friend who always finds something to complain about when it comes to food said the beans were some of the best he had had locally. We also loved the chips and salsa. Admitedly, you need to manage expectations. This is not what I would call a destination place - you don't drive a long way to eat here. And you don't "go out for dinner" here. It's a convenience stop, a taqueria you stop at when shopping in the area. And it's not bad at that. This is a super small place (maybe 4 tables) but the service was very friendly. read more

Every time we go to Santa Cruz, we get burritos from Tepeque. No other burrito can even compare to their deliciousness! If you've just been going to all those Taqueria Vallarta joints, check this place out!!! It's so much more flavorful!! My fiance and I used to go here all the time when we lived in the area. It's great to walk in, place your order, hang out at Bed Bath & Beyond 2 doors down for a bit, then go back to get your food. There's also usually an adorable dog outside next door at the gemstone shop that you can say hello to if you prefer. I get a regular burrito with chicken. No sour cream or guacamole needed! Love this place! Last night we had the huge shrimp cocktail - it was stuffed with large prawns in the most delicious fresh juicy tomato chile salsa cocktail with lots of avocado. The best! We also tried the carnitas, it was perfect with a proper carmelization on the exterior, tender and savory (not fake steamed meat like most places). It's cozy with only six tables but there's always one open when we arrive. The chips and salsa are classic style, fresh and flavorful but not cal-fresh style: a real homemade chili salsa, not pico de gallo. The menu has a more variety than most taquerias and breakfast is served all day. But the real jewel in the crown is the great group of folks running the restaurant: friendly, ethical and devoted - they prepare every dish like they're cooking for family. I have eaten here a few times and it is worth trying. It appears to be a mom and pop small business. I have had some good food here and I would recommend it. The atmosphere is more fast food than cloth napkin so I would consider that if I were taking a date. If you are looking for a casual place to have some tacos and a couple of beers by all means come here. The service is good and the food is enjoyable. Ordered bean & cheese burrito ($4) on mon 7/23 at 1pm (whereas a meat burrito is $5.50 or so). it was literally just beans and goopy flavorless cheese. nothing else. are you kidding me?! maybe throw a little rice in numbnuts! (taqueria vallarta does and so do many others -- so go there instead.) i also asked for salsa IN my burrito it wasnt. great, a burrito that tastes like beans and cheese, this is barely mexican if at all, oh right its in a tortilla. wigger please! cashier was dopey. she even walked right past me with apparently was my order even though i was sitting expectantly in the chair closest to register with my laptop bag in hand. another worker brought this same bag out to me 3-5 minutes later. will never return. cy-oh-nar-uh! ;-) read more

Having exhausted most other Taquerias in the area the Boo and I thought we'd give this place a shot. As they were out of the meat choice I like the Boo and I both purchased a shrimp burrito. As we waited for our "seafood burritos" we couldn't help noticing how cluttered and dirty the place was, and while I'm all for whole-in-the-wall dive Taquerias there is a line drawn when the place is not actually busy; a full yet dirty Taqueria is fine because you know its fresh and there's a constant turnover, but when dirty meets empty (maybe deserted is a better word) you start to wonder just how long the shrimp have been kicking around the place. Already losing interest by the filthy surroundings the beep of a microwave from the kitchen pretty much sealed the deal for low expectations. Expecting very little we were actually quite surprised by the first few bites, but as we entered the interior of the burrito we were met by a nest of microbial shrimp that smelled the part more than they tasted like it. The final problem was the structure, poorly wrapped and suffering from a mash of beans, rice, lettuce and salsa rather than separate comingling ingredients. Maybe I've been hanging out in San Francisco too long, but this place has seemed to have lost its hold in the wall charm. I have a long history with Tepeque: it practically kept me alive one year in college, and i'm on a first name basis with the cashier there. I came here yesterday and ordered a chicken fajita burrito, for old time's sake. I got it to go and walked the strip as I munched. The peppers and onion were undercooked, there were too many beans (order black beans, btw) and it had a poor wrap job. I felt about twenty pounds heavier about half way through, too heavy for a fajita burrito. Disappointing. Next time I'll stick with my old favorite: a carne asada super burrito with black beans. I was working in the area and decided to try this place out. I ordered the Camarones a la Diabla and I was very satisfied. Most restaurants cook the shrimp too spicy to the point that you don't enjoy the flavor. This place is different. Not too spicy and very tasty sauce. Definitely recommend you try them out. I used to go in here at least once every couple of weeks. Everyone is nice enough, food is average but prices are also decently reasonable. This last week when we were in there I ordered three meals to go. There was a different person at the counter who isn't normally there, an older women (apparently the owner). She put 1 tiny salsa in with the 3 meals, so I asked for 1 more, which I think is incredibly fair to ask for when ordering 3 meals, and would even gladly pay for it if needed. She yelled "NO! THATS IT!" in a super hateful way, and walked away. Normally I would 'bite' back a little at rude people, but I just walked out and just won't ever return. Who has time for anything else these days...it's just not worth it. The thing is, my entire extended family went there decently often, which extends to 20+ people. They'll survive without us just fine, but regardless, they just lost a lot of business. Sorry to the other people that work there, as they were always decent enough, but we will not support the owner, who is apparently an just a bitter women with a complete lack of decency for her customers. read more

I frequented this great hole-in-the-wall for a couple years alot after they opened, and though the prices have gone up since, they're still very reasonable......totally AUTHENTIC Mexican food, much better than the Americanized Vallarta's and other places.......try the Machaca & eggs breakfast, either in burrito or plate.....the carne asada platter is awesome also, as is the Pescado Frito, a huge deep fried white fish that is amazing......decor is very simple, but they do have outdoor dining except ya gotta watch out for the rude people who smoke their cigarettes sometimes, right where other people are trying to enjoy a restaurant's food.....(same thing with August Moon).....the owners are hardworking people, very nice if you get to know them as is the young man cashier.......all in all, some of the best Mexican food I've ever eaten out, and I'm 1/4 Mexican ;- ) better than Rositas, way better than Vallartas, almost as good as Manuels in Aptos, but that place is twice as expensive now, if we could just get a Del Taco in town, I always make a stop at the one in San Jose when I go over the hill.....:- ) but until then, and even after, I'll keep coming back to Tepeque ! gracias Amigos. read more

This place has fantastic vegetarian burritos. I polished off the whole thing (they're huge) when normally I would put half away for later because I couldn't stop eating it. I was thinking maybe I was hungrier than I thought and overrating it due to that, but when my husband bit into his, he was equally amazed! The tortilla itself had amazing flavor and the lettuce was crunchy~ no wilted shredded pieces. Can't wait to have it again. read more

This place is sooo much better than most of the wanna-be taquerias in our area. My friend suggested the Fajita Burrito with Al Pastor and it's delicious!! I'll admit that I haven't tried every item on their menu but what I have, I am very satisfied with. Not to mention a burrito will feed you twice over! Consistently excellent, authentic, and affordable. I have had lunch here six times this year, and I have had delicious food each time. Today, I had a chicken mole burrito -- just the regular size. It was absolutely delicious, and my out the door price was a few cents over $7.50. They gave me a small serving of chips and salsa, and then brought the burrito over. I always get a knife and fork too, because they stuff these burritos pretty full. Just one other thing: they are very kind people. Today, I watched their treatment of an older gentleman. They obviously knew him from past visits. The counter person helped him order and then came out to help him get seated safely. two words.... WET BURRITO. Best.Idea.Everrrrrrrrrr. this is my new schpot. it puts all the others to shame. prices are great, pretty fast cooking and the flavors are amazing. I wish I had known about this sooner. Been there twice. So far me and my boyfriend have tried the wet burritos, super burrito, tostada and taco. All were amazing and had wmore food then the standard taqueria puts in.
