I qualify this observation by telling you that I actively seek out tamales in my travels across the country, and I also need you to understand I wasn't expecting to have my mind blown away by a random restaurant far away from where tamales come from. The Guatemalan version of this dish is by far my favorite, and the chef's craftsmanship is evident in every bite. The masa, the filling, and the interplay of both the mouth-feel and flavors make this a dish that I will repeatedly return for. Everything my group had this evening was top-notch, actually (the stew, the birria tacos, and the carne asada tacos). If all of those dishes were rated as "A", then the tamales would have earned an "A++++" in comparison. The ambiance and service here are both homey, genuine, and comforting. I feel as though I was visiting some friends that happen to be dang culinary geniuses. This place is on "The List" for places to eat with great regularity here in Tallahassee, and I want to see it succeed and flourish.

So we ordered the gator appetizer which was lightly breaded and tasted very fresh, served with a side of remoulade dipping sauce. Then we had a bowl of seafood gumbo and the red beans and rice with have a hot link. Both dishes were very flavorful and I would definitely recommend them. The only negative is that they were both a little on the salty side for our liking. Oh and my wife had hoped for more okra in the gumbo. But yes I would definitely recommend this place and it was great to see a diverse crown from young kids to the elderly in what looked like a college bar environment.

In reality, we have been members for over a year and have never been in a single time when they are not out of almost everything. It happens too frequently to be less than disappointed. Staff is unapologetic about telling guests they are unexpectedly closed, out of something, etc. Today we were told by a girl with beautiful mermaid highlighted hair and a bad attitude that they only had veggie burgers and hot dogs. Okay, we will order from what they have. She told us it would be a 25 minute wait. No problem. We sat down and fed our kids snacks from home while we waited. After a few minutes, we went up to order one more item and the girl snappily said "no ma'am, we're closed." as if chastising a naught child. Okay, did not appreciate that, but ignored it. Sat down to at least get the kids fed. Then, as another employee proceeded to help other guests at the counter who just walked in, the girl came over and asked us to pack up and leave the table because they were closed. Could have at least let us finish, or used manners to let us know they needed to clean up the area to move us along. Just rude. She basically herded us out with a bag full of trash.
