I.had the beef which was like a loose meat taco.We're shredded in lettuce and cheese. I also had a chicken tacos.I tried one and it seriously was not my cup of tea although the serving was plentiful, I can't criticize it.But I felt that the food that I had was not very flavorful, but obviously there were a lot of people there that liked it.So it's probably as I said just not my cup of tea. I saw pictures online and I didn't think it looked appealing at all but the reviews are good so I tried it. I'm never going back. It tastes exactly how it looks. Bland. Processed. Canned. Tasty Tacos is one of our favorite chain restaurants in Des Moines! They fry their flour tortillas for the shell. Their meat filling has a lovely sauce with beans in it. They keep it hot and fresh. I grew up on the south side and I've seen this tasty tacos grow from the little shop it was into this newer building they have now. I've eaten here many many times. I have a huge concern over your Ankeny location. I was given the wrong order, called for a refund and was told if I wanted a refund or if I wanted to come pick up (drive 40 mins round trip) the correct order I needed to bring back the incorrect food so it can go to the right person. My kids had already thrown a fit about being starving and the food we received was gross and threw it in the trash. My concern is that this violates the Iowa health code and scares me to even order from your restaurant ever again. Additionally, it is well known that you go to the Ankeny location for the food and not for the friendly service. The "manager " was very rude and hung up on me. Monday night I visited one of my all time favorite restaurants, Tasty Tacos on S.E.14th. Every time I return home from California I make it a point of stopping by this family owned and operated business and one of my childhood favorites. That said, I know the original owners would have been appalled and disappointed in what was being heard throughout the restaurant by its customers! Being a musician, I have respect for all genres of music, but not when it contains language that is both vulgar and inappropriate for a family eating establishment. I know the Mosqueda family very well, and this would not be the culture or environment that they would have ever allowed or approved of for their restaurants! I have family out here in Des Moines and every time I visit, I force them to take me on a tasty taco run. The flour tortilla is the main reason. A taco averages about 3.25-3.50 per taco which is kind of pricey for fast food in my opinion but it doesn't seem to stop me from buying them. I can get full off 1-2 tacos. My favorite is hands down the chicken flour taco. Each taco is packed. Comes with the meat, lettuce, and a ton of cheese. The steak was a little too dry for me but that might be because I like my beef red. The pork is great! You can add more into your tacos for a little extra like sour cream, tomatoes, etc. The hot sauce isn't that spicy but it's definitely worth trying. Also, if you do have an appetite get the nachos. Deep fried crunchy flour tortilla with cheese is amazing. Basically, if you're in Des Moines just give this place a try! read more

I was never sure why there was so much hype over Tasty Tacos. I've eaten at many locations with average meals. Definitely prefer the larger restaurants more. Tasty Taco could be priced more reasonably but it's not. I never understand how the food is authentic when it isn't even cooked the way it should be, to be authentic. It isn't bad though. It just isn't good. It is average. It is nothing special. The cooks appear disheveled at times & I'm not sure I trust them being in charge of my meal. The counter staff are generally not interested in being friendly or social & look at you like you're bothering them. I am definitely ok with only eating here once a year. It's dirty inside, floors sticky, trash littered in the parking lot. And don't get me started on the restrooms. I was first introduced to Tasty Tacos when I came to Des Moines a few years back and now am a regular customer. Their tacos taste different from anywhere else I've been in my life, they taste REAL. Their flour tacos and nachos are the staple items, must try! Their decor is order at the counter from an old school looking menu, which is interesting. The whole feel with the restaurant is like a family run place. They have expanded so much I think they are available to everyone in the area. One thing I learned is that their burritos are very small...order a lot if you plan to get full. Their sides are tasty as well. Staff is friendly, but you won't really interact with them. read more

While I have experienced authentic Mexican food in a number of places around the United States, I would consider Tasty Tacos comparable in quality and taste. Delicious high quality food. It amuses me when someone states Mexican food is, or is not "authentic". This food is authentic to the family tradition of the couple who started the restaurant in 1961 using his families recipes from Mexico. Like any countries food, cuisine varies widely by region and within families. The signature item, (the tacos) are not that complex: tasty seasoned meat blends, cheese, lettuce and tomato in a deep fried flour tortilla shell. Simple but delicious and a real iconic food experience near to the hearts of those who call Des Moines their home. My favorite item is the flour tostada because the refried beans are the best I have had anywhere. I love slathering on their made in-house taco sauce. The sauce is a little spicy. The fried sides (Cheese Curds, Poppers, tasty tators etc are not outstanding as these are frozen items, not made in house. They offer some good variety but it isn't what the place is valuable for. If you're from out of town it's a must for at least one meal. I grew up here and in it's own way it is as good as the Mexican in CA though not the same. Tasty Tacos is my favorite only because of their original taco. Full of meat/bean mixture, shreds of lettuce and cheese wrapped up in a delicious fried flour shell that is crispy but chewy. Make sure to drench them in plenty of their house made salsa for the full effect. I have tried other menu items(chicken burrito, beef enchiladas, nachos) and they are ok, but literally nothing compares to the original taco! Upon moving to Des Moines I did a lot of research as to what restaurants I should try. Tasty Tacos always got good a good mention. The reason why this review gets 3 stars, instead of 4 or 5 is because at this location the service wasn't very good, the wait was long, and the food was cold by time we got it. Don't order the enchiladas, they're not saucy. They seem to be the same as the burrito, I actually couldn't tell the two apart. Your best bet is to get the regular flour taco. The shell is like one of those "Indian" tacos that you get at the state fair. They taste great, and are loaded with cheese. Maybe a little too much cheese. By all means, go to Tasty Tacos! I am so sorry to write this about a business i have visited many times and the one time I get horrible service, (by the manager). I called in a fairly large order, paused between orders, waiting for a indication to keep going which never happened. So I gave the orders one by one. I was told 15 minutes, which i was delayed a bit by my business. I went in to a busy lunch time rush, as normal there, the side taking orders was out the door (29th and Euclid location). I walked in and phone order side had one person there so I waited for that to be completed, and stepped forward as the cashier called for the next person out of the order line to come over. I have been there before and the phone order side is usually does pickup orders first. I said i had a order to pick up and gave him the name. I saw the sign on the cash register that they were out of poppers and Quacamole. I asked the guy checking me out if I got either of those items since they were both on my order and He stated, um no, we are out. I stated the guy on the phone said nothing, he said "well he is new its his second day" then he proceeded to tell me that they did not do Chicken Quesadillas, so he did a Chicken burrito instead. I told him the person on the phone did not tell me that either but I want the Cheese quesadilla. He then said we will wait for that, and went on to the next person. then he looked at me and said "well" I said are you ready for me and he never looked me in the eye, just "yep". I did not know this at the time but he was the manager. When I called to tell them they left out a couple things we ordered, he said just a minute, got my phone order, and said what are you looking for . I said a Chicken taco, and onion rings. he said onion rings you were not charged for. and the chicken taco you got. I said two or three more times that I did not receive a chicken taco. we had burritos, enchaladas, but no taco. he kept telling me I know you got a taco. I said the whole order is sitting on my desk and there is no TACO. then he said "you can come back and we will get them for you" . Now this was a person who identified himself as the MANAGER , I basically told him that I was not coming back and that this was the worst treatment I have ever had in all the times I have been coming to this location. My husband and I visited Tasty Tacos yesterday, as I hadn't been in probly 15+ years, and it's a place everyone rants and raves about, saying how amazing they are. I couldn't disagree more!! Upon walking in, the place was large and white on the inside. Lots of uncomfortable, hard, plastic booths for dine-in customers. It felt very cold and unwelcoming. My husband ordered a regular taco and I ordered a chicken burrito. The server was also cold and unwelcoming, no smiles or thanks. While getting drinks we noticed the children's booster seats sitting nearby, absolutely black with sticky filth. Once we got our food and sat down, the smell of the CANNED chicken wafting from my burrito was nauseating. Not only did it have a tuna-esque smell, but I could also smell the metallic can from which the chicken came. The taco was fine, no complaints from my husband. But considering how awful the burrito was, it has turned us both off from ever going back again. I'm extremely disappointed in everyone's local favorite. read more
