Really cool setup. You order your food at the front, then find an open seat--they have tons of outdoor seating right on the Sound. They had live music playing on a Saturday evening and he was really talented as well! Pretty good food, we both got a pork BBQ sandwich with red mash potatoes. Pretty good selection of beer and mixed drinks--although my Orange Crush didn't taste like it had any alcohol in it. My wife got a Rum Runner and a Mai Thai and was very happy with both from a flavor and alcohol content. Really fun area where kids can run and play and also fun to people watch. We tried the Blackened Local Tuna Sandwich and the Blackened Mahi Mahi Wrap. Both came with a choice of a side (get the Black Bean Salad-it's delicious). Their seafood is fresh and delicious and both come with wasabi cream or cilantro, lime sauces. The Mahi Mahi wrap had the perfect cucumber crunch and the tuna was seared to a perfect medium rare. Food was fine, it was a surprise to me that it was an order at the counter sit at a picnic table place. The man at the bar was pretty grumpy, seemed like the manager or owner. Really did not like if you did not follow the order procedure exactly. I watched him reprimand several customers. I can see when it's high season and busy, but on a rainy slow night, not really necessary. He pointed out as we left that we were using the wrong door. The cashiers just give the summarized receipt and not the detailed charges, happened twice over the last week. 3. Although they have a couple of oscillating fans in the building sitting area, there are still flies around that can be lessened by having more fans. Only reason I am giving 4 stars is because we came here not know what it is all about. There are some tables outside but covered. And the rest of the tables are outside not covered. We sat outside and it was super hot so we were sweating the whole time. Came in for dinner on a Monday and the place was packed. You order your food and drinks at the counter. They gave us our drinks and a number for the table. The runners will bring the food to you or you can order more drink through them. There is a separate line inside to order more for people who have a tab open. The place seems real cool. The food came out real quick. We probably would have drank more if we were seating so bad. Best place to watch the sunset in Waves! Food is amazing and the views are even more stellar. We got the crab stuffed portobello which was gone in less than a minute for our table. The drinks are very good and pretty strong. They went away with table service so you'd have to stand in line to order and servers will bring out your food. The space itself was decent. But the inability to sit indoors was a dealbreaker from us ever going again. The picnic tables (at dinner) were in direct sun, that coupled with the heat made it difficult to eat. We had a person in our party that used a walker and navigating the crowded picnic space and her inability to sit comfortably on a picnic bench (though no fault of Waterman's) was another reason we would not be back. Omg! What a great location! Good food and quick service! During our stay in April we visited Waterman's twice due to the excellent food and quick service. You do need to get here early because the sunsets are amazing! As a mom of two toddlers I loved the outdoor seating and space for my kids to run! One piece of advice..... you don't need to order apps and main dish at the same time, they will all come out together. I wish we would have just done the apps they were delicious!! I wish we would have went here the first night we were in Rodanthe, because this place is killer with the seafood. The fast food vibe kind of hindered us a bit, but when we tasted bites of food, that immediately was shattered. The food is fresh and delicious. I went with the blackened local tuna sandwich, no roll, and my mom had the crab cakes. My side was the citrus slaw, which had great flavor. The tuna was melt in your mouth fabulous and I wanted to take home all the local tuna because it was so good. I miss the local fish on menus up here in Buffalo. Definitely stop here and get the local seafood items. My mom's crab cake was all crab. There was hardly any filling and that was something that really surprised us. The basic Watermen's Burger here is divine. Recommend getting it cooked medium for the best taste and texture. I'm from Kansas and I know a good burger and this is probably the single best burger I've had since I left Kansas 14 years ago. Truly. I also like their salsa. Tortilla chips aren't made in house but are fine. Good beer selection on draft. Basic quesadilla has delicious veggies on it but my picky kiddo hated that so just be aware. Ribs were good with an excellent and super tasty sauce on them. We went here multiple times in a week because our vacation rental was just a 5-minute drive away. Lucky us! The only reason why this place gets any business is because of where it's located, and they take full advantage of it. They know that they can just bring out mediocre food, bad drinks, and act rude because they'll still get business because of it. Since this was my first time here (and my last), I didn't know that you ordered at the bar, then sat down and they will hand you food once you pick out your own table. And with that, they tell you to know your order before you go up to the bar, but it's kind of hard to do so since the menus are right at the bar, you can't take them with you to a table, and if you try to go on their website, they only have the food menu (not including sides) and their QR code didn't work. And since we didn't know everything that we wanted right then and there, the guy behind the bar was extremely rude to us! I ordered the lump crab cake sandwich and he asked me for the sides, since they weren't on the menu that we had to look at before we came in, I asked him. But when it came to my friend who asked about the sides, the guy behind the bar was like "I literally just told her the sides" in like the most rude way possible. The sides are tortilla chips, watermelon salad and black bean salad. Weird ass sides if you ask me. And then we were asked about what we wanted for drinks. Since the menu isn't online or anything, you have to be at the bar to see what drinks they have. So obviously we didn't know what we wanted right away which made the guy even more angry. So we both just got orange crushes because that was like the first thing we saw on the menu. And it's not like it was packed or there were people behind us so I don't understand why he was so impatient. Thankfully for him, my friend payed because of it were me, I wouldn't have tipped. In fact, I would've wrote a big fat zero where the tip part was. The drinks (that he made btw) were nasty, my sandwich was fine, but nothing to ride home about, the tortilla chips are literally not made fresh and come from a bag. And with the price they're setting for the meals, you'd think they'd just make some chips or fries themselves. The only reason I'm giving this place a 2 instead of a 1 is because of the one server and bus boy who were out at the tables doing all of the real work.
