Dream Day Decorators

Dream Day Decorators

I've used Dream Day Decorators for my wedding about two years ago. The staff there are amazing. Any…read moreideas or request I had, they made it happen. I love that they can even accommodate with one day set up and take down since my venue prefer that. They definitely made all the guests feel they were in a different venue and that was one of my wishes. :)

We reminded DDD that the bus service, to our area, is only 4 days a week, and we would prefer to use a courier to ensure delivery in time for decorating, we were more than willing to pay for it. The DDD staff reassured us, emphatically, that they had always used the bus and never had any problems. Long story short, the decor DID NOT ARRIVE IN TIME for our wedding day. Fortunately some of the items we rented/purchased were not critical, and with amazing friends and family locally we were able to pull together the rest of the items we needed. Our beautiful wedding day went off without a hitch, and no one was the wiser as to the missing decor. When we spoke with them the following week about refunding for items not received in time, they refused. They refused to refund our deposit, for having returned the goods, completely unused. They refused to refund us for the couple of hundred tealight candles we purchased & at least wanted to return...they likely sold them to another bride/event, therefore selling them twice. The expense for these items, $650, was not huge, but nonetheless lost. I was referred to DDD by other brides who had used them locally (in my community) before. I discourage future brides in this area from ever using them, and if you are in Winnipeg, despite of the contract/agreement you may hold in your hands, beware. (had to give this rating 1 star because there is no lower option or a zero).

Storm Catering - basil pesto, smoked mozzarella & braised leek stuffed chicken with a sundried tomato cream sauce

Recently, I attended a wedding that was catered by Storm at the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG). They're…read morethe exclusive caterer of the WAG, Millennium Centre and Fort Gibraltor. Foods at weddings can be quite the disappointment due to crazy logistics and volumes at these events. But I have to say that I was impressed with the food. The appys consisted of mushroom bruschetta, vegetable wontons w/ plum suace, Thai chicken skewers, California roll, goat cheese with fresh herbs on tomato slices and a panchetta item. Overall, the appys were cooked properly and tasted good; an average to good showing here. I was impressed that the chicken skewers were quite juicy (and unusually large). The bread basket was pretty good as I ate 3 rolls to tie me over till dinnertime. They were the usual, whole wheat, white and pumpernickel dinner buns but tasted quite fresh! The Roasted Tomato Bisque with Puff Pastry Cheese Straw was really good despite the fact that it was a really hot summer night. The baby green and beet chip salad with sautéed red onion & goat cheese served with a calamata vinaigrette was a delicious salad. The salad was fresh and was not wilted. I loved that they didn't cheap out on the goat cheese as so many kitchens wimp out on that. The beet chip sounded interesting but really, just tasted like a chip from those vegetable chip assortments - I would've preferred roasted beets instead. The main was basil pesto, smoked mozzarella & braised leek stuffed chicken with a sun dried tomato cream sauce. It also came with potatoes, asparagus, red peppers, zucchini and shredded beets. I liked everything about this dish except for the cream sauce as it was too rich and heavy for me. Not that I would've wanted the proverbial brown sauce on chicken. Overall, a great dish as the chicken was super moist (pretty amazing feat as the whole reception was running about an hour behind so I'm sure that threw the kitchen's timing off). The vegetables were all cooked perfectly. The dessert was a Chocolate Bomb drizzled with White Chocolate with Raspberry Coulis & Chantilly Cream. It tasted more like a gelato as it wasn't quite an ice cream. It was a nice dessert - better than a cake! Service was decent - food came out pretty quickly to all the tables. The bartenders were efficient in making drinks as I recall visiting them pretty often! Overall, good caterers as the food here was on par or even better than what I've ever had at the Fairmont or Fort Garry events.

The meal was alright (pork with some sort of blueberry sauce, grilled vegetables and potatoes), but the ice cream (or whatever it was) served for dessert was not very good at all. It was full of ice crystals like stuff you forget about in the freezer for a year. Also, I found their mini poutines to be lack lustre and the pink in the middle hamburger sliders left me somewhat concerened about food safety. Oh, and the redheaded waitress needs to check her shitty attitude at the door (no, I wasn't rude to her - I know waiting tables is not easy and I'm therefore very polite to servers, bartenders, etc. This girl was just rude!).

Canad Inns - I'd wear flip flops all the time when staying here.

All the stars are for the nice staff at the front desk, Aaltos and the cleaning staff. Maybe a half…read morestar for the quality of the pool. - The room in general: * WiFi was down for most of our stay. When available, it wasn't very fast or reliable * The lighting is VERY poor in our room; it felt like we were in a dungeon (room facing the pool) * Definitely not enough plugs in the room to accommodate the average family with their devices. * In the fridge/microwave area there was a plug splitter added to a plug to accommodate multiple devices; this was VERY dangerous and, IMO, a serious fire hazard given the load on that outlet. We unplugged it during our stay; but all the rooms are probably like this. * There was only one chair in our room and basically no place to sit. * The faucet in the bathroom was dripping the whole time. * The pillows were so worn out that they provided no support whatsoever and my head was basically on the mattress all night - The pool * The waterslide is fast and fun and the pool area is clean * You need a wrist band to be in the pool area, BUT when we went there were "families of 20" there all without wrist bands. To make matters worse, many of the kids without wrist bands were behaving dangerously which resulted in us taking our 6-7-year olds away from the pool. * This hotel needs to enforce their wrist band policy better without exception. - We stayed in a kids-themed room * One of the lights in the kids room did not work. * The beds were rock hard in the kids room and there was some kind of torn rubber material covering the mattresses * The DVD player didn't work in the kids room. We're not staying at this place again unless we hear of major room renovations.
