OK, look this place is a staple of Winnipeg. It has a five star vibe 3 1/2 star food and a five star location of an old-school vibe long gone. You feel like you're in Vegas before there were any hotels there you're just waiting for Frank Sinatra and the rest of Rat Pack to walk in. If I had to compare the quality of the food, I would compare to the keg. This is an old-school restaurant that you must go to just for the vibe but you gotta dress up dress like you're going out in the 1940s through 1960s vibe. I wore bright red shoes into this awesome red environment. You might not necessarily be going to this place for the food, but you necessarily are going to this place for the vibe and if you're doing a private function, I would suggest renting out the lounge getting yourself a band and turning it into one hell of a party. Considering I consider myself a high maintenance person, I would eat here again, but I would definitely talk to management about having that old-school crooner vibe playing throughout the bar and restaurant the entire night every night because this is what this place deserves. Ambiance was good and server was fine. Food on the other hand was well below average, then onion soup had hardly any onions and my natural prime rib that was ordered medium rate came between blue and rare. I did eat 1/3 of the cook part that turned it back. The server first said that because I had eaten some of it it could not be "comp". Told her to bring me a replacement which was more med than med/rare but at that point I really had enough. I do not care to pay the exorbitant price but expect the food to deserve it and for the restaurant own up when the provide below average food. Every Year for my birthday we go to my special restaurant for my birthday dinner. We always order the prime rib and the fixings. We went last night for dinner, June 12. SO DISAPPOINTED........the only acceptable meat was the prime rib...but still not great. The waitress was nice, but doesn't compensate for the horrible food. My mashed potatoes we tasteless......we ordered mushrooms with our prime rib and she brought them out late, and they looked like somethings that were left in the forest for a year, they were dark dark brown.....too large whole mushrooms and again tasteless. My husband had ordered the prime rib with 2 sides and he was suppose to get asparagus and carrots......he got his asparagus but the carrots didn't come out until he was almost done his dinner and they tasted horrible. I have only been to Rae and Jerry's 2 times as I live in Vancouver. Both times I have been disappointed in the prime rib sandwich. The top piece of bread was hard like it was toasted by sitting under the heat lamp too long so not very enjoyable . I complained to our waiter but he seemed uninterested . The dream is over, sad to say. I went to Rae and Jerry's for the first time since its change in ownership earlier this year and it just wasn't the same. The classic 1950s interior décor was still there and the service was still pleasant and helpful, but the high quality of the food was gone. I had a $50.25 prime rib dinner which was by far the worst prime rib I had ever had anywhere. The meat was tough and required extensive chewing. Was it a bad cut of meat or does the chef not know how to cook it properly? Or was it a combination of low quality meat and unskilled preparation? My plate was also overloaded with meat drippings, which made for precarious eating in terms of me not getting stains all over my clothing, especially with the prodigious amount of sawing of the prime rib I had to do with my knife. Another person at my table also ordered the prime rib dinner and left more than half of it on her plate, declining to box the remainder to take home. It was just that bad. The accompanying items I received were not much better. The bread consisted of two types of slices that were like out of a bag (not buns and not warmed, like you would expect in a place like this), the salad was not crisply fresh, and the potato was overbaked and dry and came with barely any accoutrements, being no longer fully dressed as in the old days. In contrast, the piece of cake that I had at the end of my meal was excellent. Family members at my table also had overall similarly disappointing experiences, saying that the quality, freshness, and preparation of most of their food was subpar. One said that her filet mignon was actually very good, which I am glad to report, but the accompanying items were again not so appetizing. The garlic mashed potatoes were lumpy and clumpy like wet cement, the broccoli was overcooked and mushy, and the cheese sauce on the broccoli had an unappealing congealed consistency to it. Even the crackers that came with the soup were stale. I had enjoyed Rae & Jerry's many times in the past before this most recent visit, but I think that this was it for me. It is an expensive place to eat, but the quality is just no longer there. It is doubtful that anyone in our group will ever want to return, especially when some of us have recently had actually enjoyable experiences at other Winnipeg steakhouses. Rae and Jerry's is a throwback to the 50's. I was far from being alive during this decade, but you feel like you're there when you dine at this restaurant. I have been here countless times. It is known for great steaks and its cocktail bar. It has been a Winnipeg tradition for decades. I never had problems finding parking. It feels like gangster cars are about to park in front of the restaurant for a showdown, but in the nicest sense these days. When you first walk in, it's dark, but inviting. Female staff wear red aprons and white chunky high-heeled shoes. Men are generally dressed in black with perhaps a white shirt. I am not kidding when I saw that you are shifted into a completely different period when you get there. The seats are red leather. The tables are while. It works. Some of my favourite meals at Rae and Jerry's are the following: - Roast Manitoba hot turkey sandwich (comes with gravy and cranberry sauce) - Grilled minced beef sirloin steak with mushroom sauce - Veal cutlet with Spanish sauce - Hot roast prime rib of beef sandwich, with coleslaw, fries, and gravy - Deluxe hamburger, with barbecue sauce, tomato, lettuce, dill pickle, fries, and coleslaw Most of these meals come with your choice of soup or chilled tomato soup, and coleslaw or vegetables. I tend to get the chilled tomato juice. It's pretty classy. I have also had the chicken noodle soup, which was hearty. The coleslaw is vinegar-based and crunchy. I don't recall if I ever got the veggies. Fries are hand-cut and delicate. They are nicely seasoned with salt and are delicious with gravy. You get a lot of them. My favourite go-to meals are the roast Manitoba hot turkey sandwich and grilled minced beef sirloin steak with mushroom sauce. I find any main meal with gravy smothered on top of everything to be comforting. The turkey in the former is real turkey. It's not that fake turkey cold-cut ham nonsense. It is yummy. The grilled minced beef sirloin steak is essentially a salisbury steak with the best mushroom sauce ever. So good! Is it bad that I keep drooling as I write these reviews? Hello blast from the past. I thought I was back in the 1950s. Parking is available around the building on 3 sides. The inside really is like a time capsule, with the vinyl armchairs and fake wood paneling. The only indicator I could see that you aren't caught in a time warp were the flat-screen TVs. If the owners were gunning to keep the original look (this place first opened in 1957), they definitely succeeded. I was waiting for an episode of I Love Lucy to play on the TVs. The place was pretty packed, with a generally older crowd. Definitely not surprising, based on the theme. Everyone looked like they were having a great time, with lots of loud chatters in the mix. The service is decent and professional. Drinks here are unfortunately a bit on the pricey side. A few bucks more than I would've liked to pay. It looks like they have a decent wine selection though. The prime rib I had was solid meat, without much fat at all. Absolutely beautiful. The portions here are pretty huge. The entrees come with your choice of chilled tomato juice or soup, as well as salad and potato. I had the soup (beef tomato), which was decent diner fare. The salad was a little lacking in the presentation department, but again, this is a 1950s diner. The same thing could be said of the mashed potato - it looked like they used an ice cream scoop, then smushed it into the little dish. I was totally stuffed at the end of the meal. No need for dessert at all. When the bill came, it had a chocolate stick on top. Yay! The food is a bit pricey (over $30 for the entree combo) based on what most diners charge, but they do have a good thing going here. I'd definitely be back if I needed to stuff myself on some cow. Winnipeg edition!! So if you like the show Mad Men and you want to eat in a steak house comparable to that era this is the place for you. The decor is sooo incredibly neat! It's like walking into a time warp, red velvet walls, red leather booths...absolutely the most incredible throw back place I've ever been to. Most places that are trying to recreate this type of vibe come off as old and in need of a face lift, not this place. It's extremely well kept up, and they've obviously had that visual of keeping that same feel in the place. It doesn't feel run down or old or anything like that. The steaks come your choice of two sides, basic veg and potato's but the starters are priceless! So you can get a bowl of homemade soup or a glass of chilled tomato juice..mind blown. I'm probably never going to another place with that offering so of course I'm going with the tomato juice..It comes out and yep a glass of tomato juice! Brilliant! It's a glass of tomato juice but whatever, life without whimsy is not worth living... Ordered the T-Bone which was beautifully cooked and flavourful, seasoned wonderfully. The sides we're good also, garlic mash and green beans. Not mind altering but delicious none the less. GF had the halibut which was drowning in butter sauce and a bit over done but not terrible. The cocktail menu is old school and cool also. Had myself a brandy Alexander, which I haven't had in years but they nailed it. Shared this with some of the others. Starter Ribs with a side of rice. Steak Dinner with baked potato and salad. Breaded prawn dinner on toast with soup. Pickerel with rice and a salad. We've been coming to this restaurant over the years and something has been happening. While the service was nice, the meal itself was horrible: overpriced and completely mediocre. To start, our reservation was recorded incorrectly. Meals were in general tasteless. What used to be an interesting bread basket had morphed into simple grocery store bread slices served with frozen butter. Fries served with meals were cold, undercooked, and sticking together. Onion rings were completely greasy and inedible. For those who ordered burgers: tasteless. For a quarter of the price, we enjoyed the 'Sals' nips' we had the day before (yes, we try to be loyal to Winnipeg institutions on our visits to the city). Even the caesar's were bland. Up your game! Ray & Jerry's dates back to a different era! It's a place my grandma mentioned she had been to years ago and in Winnipeg you can't say that about many restaurants! Checking their website they have been around since 1957! You have an option of eating in the lounge or the dining room. The interior of the lounge is like something out of the movie Goodfellas. The red chairs that swivel make you feel like you should be wearing your leisure suit or a smoking jacket! Classic elegance in an evening setting! Back in the day when the Jets played at the old arena this was one of the high class places to come before the game. If my memory serves me right they even had a bus that would take patrons to the game from the restaurant! Fast forward to my night on Dec 2013..... I met up with some friends in the lounge for some drinks and a bite to eat! In the past I would have a hot roast beef sandwich as beef is their specialty! Friends were telling me to get the cheeseburgr as they stated it was made from ground sirloin! So I dived into a cheeseburger and fries. Totally awesome! Great atmosphere, fantastic martini's, but unfortunately, the food has gone way downhill. This was one of my favourite places to go in Winnipeg for many many years, but the quality of food does not match the prices. They used to use fresh roasted turkey in the club house, but no more. The fries used to be great, crispy shoe string fries, but are always undercooked now, and even when you send them back and ask for more cripsy fries, they come back bland and pale. On my last visit, I had the lunch special - beef tenderloin tips in sauce. It looked like they had taken a can of cheap gravy - poured it on the plate, and added 2 or 3 very small pieces of meat. It was a goopy, inedible, mess. If you go, and I do recommend anyone who hasn't been there to check it out - best to stick to things like the bar food - chicken fingers, onion rings and ribs and of course do yourself a favour and have a martini - the best ever, but avoid the burgers - for a steak house - they are bad - cheap bun, and dry meat. So many places are upping their burger game these days - there is no excuse for this burger at a steak house. I went to Rae and Jerry's for the very first time recently. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the restaurant was the setting and the atmosphere. We noticed that the setting was quite old-fashioned with red carpets and red chairs all over. We were served with a basket of assorted bread to start. I loved how diverse the bread that was served to us! For entree, I had an 8oz Filet Steak with mushroom and mashed potato. The steak was good but it was not extraordinary. It was no comparison with Hys or 529. The only issue I had the whole evening was that our server was quite inattentive. It took her awhile to finally come back to us to take our order. I flew into Winnipeg this past weekend to celebrate my 30th high school reunion. I was initially excited about going to Rae and Jerry's as I heard that my cousin Garther was requested to serve our group Friday night. BUT.......Earlier in the day, myself and Garther's sister (who graduated with me), found out that Garther would not be serving us as he wasn't put on the schedule. He was requested weeks earlier and the restaurant had plenty of time to get him on the schedule for us. What was really disappointing was that the restaurant told us he wasn't available, when we (his family) knew that he was. To top things off, when we talked to the owner (I believe his name is Steve), we felt like he was blowing us off and just trying to get us into our section and away from the front of the restaurant. It felt like he didn't have the time to really listen to us. Myself and my cousin weren't even the ones who requested him that night, it was our reunion organizer, someone who has known Garther for years. The overall experience has left myself and the girls I went to school with, very disappointed with the restaurant. The service from the other servers was fine and the group enjoyed Ian (I think that's his name). The food was only OK, and quite overpriced. The veggies that came with my meal were mediocre (just blanched) and they forgot the fixings to my baked potato. I really should be giving Rae and Jerry's a 1 star review, but I'm being nice as Ian and the other servers were fine and Garther had asked that I be nice. The Skinny: decent steakhouse straight outta Mad Men (3), service: is okay... giving the prices they charge, you'd expect a little bit better though (3), value: for what it is... it's a little overpriced (3). Places have come and gone in Winnipeg - but Rae and Jerry's remains the same. From the dark panelled walls and yellow lights to the retro red uniforms the servers wear, Rae and Jerry's is an institution in Winnipeg. We rarely if ever head here for dinner. We mostly stop by for a leisurely lunch on the weekends. Their breakfast special ($11.75) is large and filling - they even serve it with tomato juice (and Lea and Perrin's). How neat is that? I usually skip the breadbasket which is a basket of wasted carbs. Avoid the breadsticks - they're super salty and not appetizing. We frequently get the chicken or salmon salad which is a plainly decorated plate of veggies (including pickled beets and carrots). The chicken and salmon are lightly dressed with mayo and bits celery and green onion. Yum! Mostly, I end up ordering their deluxe hamburger platter - that's a regular burger with BBQ sauce, fries and coleslaw. The burger is the highlight - a nice juicy patty with a rather large bun. Like the coleslaw too, a lighter vinegar version, which goes nicely with the heaviness of the beef. Fries are rather soggy and aren't my favourite part of the dish. The prime rib sandwiches are good too however a might bland. Portions are rather large.We made the mistake of ordering the open faced version which is drenched in gravy (and not that great). Pricewise, the prime rib sandwiches are definitely overpriced at $15+ for a sandwich only. Overall, it's not a bad place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy the nostalgia. read more

Hard to hate on the R&J, specifically because it's pretty much one of the ONLY retro places in Winnipeg (apparently, all the older places decided that 1983 was a great time to modernize that interior). But, went for my birthday after Christmas, and I have to say I was completely shocked at how much the quality had slipped. Like seriously. The meat? Freakin' fantastic. Really good. But the sides? Ugh. The Pea Soup tasted like cigarette butts. It stunk like them, too. The broccoli and cheese was a bit gross. And the garlic mashed potatoes? Ok, but with a freaky weird aftertaste. Service was OK, and it was funny how the waitress even confirmed the "smoky" feature of the soup, and then did nothing about it. Burn, because this was a special occasion and my family dropped like $500 in this piece. Will probably still go back - again, ONLY cool retro place in Winnipeg - but will skip the food.
