You can tell that every item is hand selected from the olive oil on the table to the house wine selections. Nothing is unintentional & everything is chosen to enhance the menu. The family that runs the restaurant made us feel at home, the portions were generous, the service was so personal & the homemade limoncello was a divine way to end a spectacular meal. The baby squid on pumpkin puree was the best squid preparation I have ever had, the salads were excellent, the pastas were perfection, the fish was so fresh & the preparation with tomatoes & potato was delightful. My daughter had a "complaint" in that she wanted to see the fish head of our flounder... I told her that they cleaned the fish for us, but somehow, the papa heard her in a way that only a papa would & appeared with the fish head on a plate for her to see... she couldn't get over it! Amazing food and service!! The octopus appetizer was probably the best I've ever had and I'm married into a Portuguese family!

The food tasted good, but we were completely overcharged. We had one still water, one spaghetti, a small octopus appetizer, and one whole fish (with just a few potatoes) -- and the total for 3 people was 183 euros. The fish alone cost over 100 euros (10€/100g), and they never mentioned the price beforehand since it was the "catch of the day." It felt like a scam. We left feeling taken advantage of. We absolutely loved the Taverna Degli Apostoli. The food and the wine are true representation of the Amalfi coast. This is located right next to the Cathedral in a cozy corner up the stairs! We had to wait a few minutes to get seated because they were clearing it. The staff was extremely polite and welcoming. The staff also informed us that this is cash only. We got started with some Costa d'Amalfi wine which had a mild spicy flavor to it making the wine one of the most interesting wines I have had. We got the burrata (this literally melted in my mouth) and then we got the lemon leaves wrapped Sea bream and lemon pesto. Our server was so attentive to every question we had and we enjoyed our time there. Our table faced the stairs going down and somewhere upstairs there was live music playing which was just perfect! This was one of the first meals I had after coming to Italy, and it was everything I wanted eating in Italy to be. Just off the crowded main strip, Taverna degli Apostoli may be next to the Amalfi Cathedral, but it isn't fancy. There are a few unadorned tables outside, overlooking the main square, upon which the friendly servers will lay beautifully simple dishes made with fresh, impeccable ingredients. We shared the lemon pesto pasta, and a whole sea bream special that was roasted with lemon, white wine, tomatoes and celery. They deboned it tableside, and we devoured it all, soaking up all the delicious juices with the bread provided, and washing it down with a recommended bottle of wine. The food isn't revolutionary, it's just high quality. The atmosphere is perfect, with jazz being piped in over a surprisingly fantastic soundsystem; you'd think there was a man playing the saxophone behind you. A restaurant right next to the church in the main square with outdoor and indoor seating. We were sat for lunch immediately even without a reservation. The staff were friendly. Tucked inside an old cathedral, this was one of the most romantic and delicious meals we had during our entire trip in Italy. We didn't have reservations (a common problem we encountered throughout Italy) but it was no problem, as they were able to procure a table for us in minutes. For being inside a cathedral and hidden away in the enclosed cobblestone alleyways, it was very bright and airy and felt nice and open, with tons of beautiful and local art on the walls to admire the whole meal. Starter: octopus 'confit' in a jar with a lemon wedge Entree: sea bass for two, served in a white wine/lemon/butter sauce and crispy potatoes Desserts: lemon sponge cake / strawberry & lemon tart Everything was fantastic. My BF loved the fish - he said it was his favorite the entire trip. The whole fish I had at Savo in Atrani was better than this, but this was still very delicious, served in an addicting sauce and topped with kalamata olives. The crispy potatoes were delicious and soaked up all that delicious juice. And that octopus! Massive, unctuous pieces with enough textural give and literally soaking in a jar of olive oil, whole garlic cloves and parsley sprigs. A squeeze of the fresh Amalfi lemon pulled it all together. Service was fantastic and they kept the wine flowing. Desserts were fantastic (the strawberry tart might have been my favorite dessert the whole trip). A little place off the main square and you might not immediately notice it, but what a wonderful experience! It's in a former prison attached to the church and has a little window looking out k the square. Family owned and run with Mom doing the cooking and filled with interesting art collected by Dad. It was the best meal I had in Amalfi. We enjoyed a sort of mixed seafood dish with a small amount of long rotini pasta and a lemony white wine broth that I have repeatedly tried to reverse engineer at home without coming close and a fish baked in lemon leaves. We met the chef and her son and lingered over an excellent local white wine. Don't miss this place. It will be my first stop the next time I return. read more

Super cute place at the top of the stairs by the main square. We were looking for a more casual spot one evening for some local fare - and this hit the spot! We asked for recommendations for drinks, and the waitstaff was super spot-on in their recs! Although we didn't have any fish (was going for something different that evening), the other tables we're practically licking their plates! (I was eyeing up a clams in a white-wine sauce, and almost got up to switch tables! LOL). We shared lamb chops with artichokes and potatoes - the lamb chops were divine (artichokes were a slight bit too salty for me) and the potatoes were killer. We also had the gnocchi stuffed with cheese in a fresh tomato sauce - OMG. I don't know how it's possible to stuff gnocchi with cheese, but this is beyond fantastic. Great spot with a cool view and awesome breeze without being stuck in the touristy center! A must-try! Also - this is CASH ONLY! I may or may not have had to order another glass of wine while my husband ran back to the room to grab his debit card because we didn't have enough cash.... Nice place right to the left of the Amalfi Cathedral in the square. In/outside dining but I would prefer to sit outside for the atmosphere. Seemed to be a good mix of local and tourists. The have some of the freshest prosciutto around, also not fatty like you sometimes find in the US. For main course the Baccala with fresh grape tomatoes, olives and capers was top notch. Unlike any cod preparation I've had in the states. It melted in your mouth the way a Chilean Sea Bass would. Another good option is the fresh Spaghetti with a lemon pesto sauce, done really well. Yelp doesn't have the hours for this place but I believe they are closed on Wednesdays in the summer but if you are staying in Amalfi this is a must try. read more

CANNOT SAY ENOUGH GREAT THINGS ABOUT THIS PLACE!!! We found it from my Yelpie friends' specific directions. Went for lunch and stayed for two hours because we were in heaven. The portions were perfect, the ambiance was entertaining and the drinks were strong (get the limoncello). We love Rick Steves and his book led us to Taverna degli Apostoli. We sat outside with a nice view of the main piazza by the cathedral. Their caprese appetizer was delicious. My dad and sister got the pasta with clams. They loved their meal. My mom got the pasta bolognese and said it was amazing! I ordered the lemon pesto, which did not disappoint! It was a bit tart, but definitely a unique twist on the classic pesto. We got plentiful portions of everything! read more

There is a Michelin Star restaurant in town, but this place is by far the better restaurant, from the food, eclectic art collection, the locale to the service. It was a surprisingly unique and wonderful experience. The restaurant is underneath Cathedral di Sant Andrea Apostolo, occupying a kind of a dungeon position, which makes walking in a journey in itself. It's like finding Hogsmeade in Diagon Alley. We stumbled upon it on way to a different place, and only stopped in to have a glass of wine in what looked like an old cellar. Once inside, the menu intrigued us into ordering food. The food was definitely the star, but while we were waiting for it to arrive, we noticed the unusual collection of art on the wall, hung salon-style, covering all available space. There were portraits, in various styles with 19th century stuff comfortably juxtaposing to a portrait of Pope Benedict in underwear. And then there was a landscape of Amalfi with an inferno red background by a German artist, defying all expectations of paintings of the region. All this while we sipped Prosecco and local biancchi. The waitress, who may be the young proprietress, was very knowledgeable about the grapes and wines, and recommended a red that was an amalgam of three grapes from the region. It had a very unique aroma and went down smoothly. Then the food arrived. First was the octopus, slow cooked in olive oil served in a jar, like visiting the countryside of France---octopus confit, if you will. Then the bruschetta with clams and crustaceans. What a misnomer this dish was! This should be called Amalfi cioppino with bruschetta. There were 4-5 kinds of clams, one called Sea Truffle, mussels and local crawfish that had claws as big as blue crab, in a buttery, citrusy sauce that infused a sea flavor into the toasted bruschetta. Our favorite dish was squid with pumpkin purée and roasted seeds. The sautéed squid blended perfectly with the creamy, aromatic mashed pumpkin, and the crunchy seeds gave it a smokey texture. It was a crescendo of Amalfian sea fare ending with a lemon pesto pasta. Warning, the tiny dried red chili pepper from their own garden is the hottest pepper I've ever had. Dessert was a chocolate mousse with homemade whipped cream. I must have had chocolate mousse dozens of times before, but after working through that delicious meal, this seemed like the best mousse I've ever had---creamy, light, darkly chocolatey. Careful handling the glass which is drizzled with fudge, less you get it all over your jeans like me. A memento. We never made it to the other place, but what an adventure we had in the dungeon of St. Andrea Cathedral. Life is blissful when you take an unexpected turn and find hidden treasure on the path to your destiny. Enjoy. read more

Just off the Main Street to the left of the cathedral (when facing it). It's not as touristy as the main road areas- but still has English on its menu so it kind of is. The waiters were all fantastic. Three of them checked in on my friend and I during lunch to see if we were good. We only ordered off the appetizer menu, which was a good thing because the portions are large and delicious. Wine was incredible and the beer was cold. This place is right next to the HUGE cathedral in the town of Amalfi. Very intimate. I recommend having a reservation. The staff are very nice and are very attentive. The food is out of this world. One of our best meals while visiting Italy. Make sure to bring cash as credit cards aren't accepted (there's a nearby ATM). We loved sitting outside where we could look down on the street and people watch. The staff was extremely helpful selecting a regional wine and were also very attentive. My husband and I aren't lovers of seafood, so we tried the burrata, the bolognese, the mozzarella stuffed gnocchi, and the steak. I was worried that maybe our choices were a little boring, but the simple ingredients were definitely not lacking in flavor. All of the sauces had depth and our steak was cooked to perfection. You must eat here. It's up a hill to the left of the cathedral if you're facing it. When I strolled up one of the waiters was standing outside ready to greet patrons. When you walk in you go up some stairs into a quaint restaurant. There is a small patio outside but it was raining hard so we ate inside. This restaurant is family owned and operated, our waitress was the daughter in law of the owner and her mother in law was in the kitchen cooking everything up by scratch. She knew English and I was surprised at how funny/witty she was for a second language. They didn't have one dish available because the cheese lady hadn't made her delivery that morning; that is how fresh their food is. A MUST: gnocchi. I'm not the biggest gnocchi girl but my husband ordered this and I was SO jealous! I can't place the flavor but it had a nice smoky/baconish flavor? I feel that's not completely accurate but that's the closest I can get. I ordered the lemon, pesto spaghetti which was also amazing and very fresh. The spaghetti noodles were thick and had a great texture. They do have Italian beer. We then order the catch of the day which was equivalent to Seabass and they brought the whole fish out to us filleted it at our table. It was very good but it's fish, which can be bland. read more

The service was warm and welcoming and the food was delicious. Note this is place is cash only. They emphasized this before we sat down. There are several ATMs near Piazza Duomo if you need to take out money. It's def worth it. Dinner service begins at 7:15pm. For apps, we ordered the octopus in olive oil, caprese w/ burrata, and anchovies w/ capers. The octopus was super tender. The tomatoes were fresh, and the burrata was juicy. I'm not a huge fan of anchovies as they always come across as fishy, but these were very mild; almost to the point of bland if it wasn't for the capers to balance it out. For mains we got 2 pastas, one with lemon pesto and one with bolognese. "Grandma's" bolognese was so good we wanted to take grandma home with us to be our personal chef. The lemon pesto was refreshing, but again i personally thought it was on the mild side. For dessert we got tiramisu! It was fluffy and light, just the way I like it. read more

Taverna Degli Apostoli was about to claim the title of finest dining experience I'd had within a week throughout Naples and the Amalfi Coast: while enjoying my dessert on the terrace overlooking Piazza del Duomo, I'd already begun drafting my review, singing the praises of its ambience and food. The food and wine are fantastic, but unfortunately my experience was clouded by a very duplicitous server trying to rip me off with a handwritten, barely legible bill. Perhaps he'd decided to prey upon the fact that I was alone and female, had indulged in three glasses of wine, but see attached photo for the bill in which every item's price is very clearly written except for one indiscriminate scribble. The legible handwriting, mine, denotes the breakdown of items; he gratuitously told me what each illegible item stood for, the "scribble" item being my one bottle of water. Once added up, I determined that the "scribble" represented 14€: he was attempting to charge me 14€ for a bottle of water. When I asked him how much a water was, he responded "4€" and claimed: "I must have made a mistake; correct it!" I'll allow you readers to make your own judgements based on the photo, considering how neat the rest of the numbers are, but I'll leave you with this: Upon returning to my hotel, I shared this story with the gentleman at the desk. Before I'd even shared the name of the restaurant, he said: "Oh, the guy with the long hair at Taverna Degli Apostoli? I know everyone here, and I've heard that story a bunch of times." Long story short: great food, but beware. I would much prefer the predictably great food that is typical of the Amalfi Coast, and honest service, over wonderful food and the duplicity attempted here. Came here late at night just wanting a decent Bolognese. I must say, their Tagliatelle Bolognese is one of the best I've had. Great wine and great service! This is the place to have a wonderful Italian dinner in Amalfi, with its friendly servers, great food, and interesting location. When you come to its entrance, it seems quite inconspicuous and hidden: it being inside of a tunnel below a cathedral. However, the amazing Yelp reviews lead us to try the food. Inside, only four tables are available with mismatched tables and decor. However, the food took quite some time to be served, the kitchen practically was as big as a house kitchen. The food was well worth the wait: local ingredients with authentic dishes made as if the chef was a really good family cook. We got tagliatelle bolognese, stuffed gnocchi, and baked fish. Every dish was phenomenal! The pasta sauce had a nice tomatoey flavor that blended well with the pasta, and was quite good. The gnocchi was stuffed with rich, oozy, heavenly cheese served in a thin tomato base, providing an interesting contrast. The fish was served on tree leaves and was lightly baked with lemon on the side, minimalistic yet delicious. For the sides, we got the salad, broccolini, and eggplant. All were doused with olive oil, without being too over-the-top. The broccolini was sautéed with a savory tang, the eggplant was covered in delicious cheese, and the salad adding a touch of healthiness to the delicious meal. We had a lemon sponge cake (mmm) and a local Italian pie that had lavender in it that we found disgusting being unaccustomed tourists. Not really a bad thing since it was an acquired taste. Great location since the restaurant was by a cute square. The only thing that was wrong was that the artwork on the wall could be obscene.
