I went to Taylor Animal Shelter 06/16/26 to adopt a cat named Wilder. He had labored breathing (mouth breathing) and was in obvious distress. I told the front staff receptionist (Hanna) who told me "I should adopt the cat and take it to my vet". I explained that the animals should be in good health when adopted out. I then told Shawn Donovan (supervisor) who said "they weren't going to spend a bunch of money at the vet for me to swoop in and adopt the cat, that's not how shelters work and I should go pick another one". I explained I'd like to complete the paperwork and pay and pick up the cat once he was cleared by vet and he told me "he would not notify me, that he was the boss, and that he did not know what I was not understanding". He then said he would give me the cat and I could take it to my vet. This was easily the most unprofessional and oddest interaction I have ever had with any shelter staff at any shelter. I understand that shelter environments have skeleton staff and budgetary constraints but both Hanna and Shawn Donovan displayed attitudes that show they are unhappy with their jobs. Their actions aren't aligning with animals best interest and they are making rules up as they go with minimal oversight. I hope this reaches someone who cares and can address the issue as multiple reviews mention similar behavior and adoptions are being lost due to poor staff behavior. read more

A couple weeks ago Fox2 Detroit did a report 11am newscast with Scott Walchek about Taylor Animal Shelter at full capacity. We been looking for a pair of kittens, the perfect timing. After lunch we drove to location on Northline in Taylor Mi. They had 16 kittens we found a pair of brothers 8 weeks old. Got a mega Deal BOGO got 2 for $135 whoppee. Friendly service great experience, don't understand all the negative reviews around the web. Please support this marvelous organization, a visit should be in your future. read more

If I could give them less than one star I would. They don't take in animals. This is the second year in a row someone dumped a cat that we tried to help. Last year the shelter said they had ringworm contact them in two weeks I did and they never returned my calls. We had kittens and were able to find them all good homes with ABSOLUTLY NO support from animal control. Now we have another looks like a male and again they will not take him. City of Taylor will not work with Williamson County animal control so you cannot take them there. They are getting nice new buildings with all that Tax money while the town is over run with stray animals. Less than one star. read more

Very disappointed in the way staff handled the recovery of my missing kitty. I came in within 30 min of them calling me telling me he'd been found and was visibly upset when I'd arrived. When I came to recover him they were very judgmental and seemed to have a lot preconceived notions about my situation. They were very standoffish and extremely unhelpful. No matter how the animal was lost, it is super inappropriate to act the way they did. Do better, and have some compassion if you're going to work in the animal industry. read more

Thos shelter could not make it more obvious that they are more concerned with getting money for the animals they take in than the well being of these animals they take care of. Being a responsible pet owner wanting to adopt a dog that was JUST made available, I brought my dog to meet the other dog before making a choice. Because another person was there to be a possible adopter, the animal control officer wouldn't allow me to meet the dog even though the other potential adopters were completely fine with it. I was told I should have came up at an earlier point and was belittled on a policy that was not even stated anywhere. They told us we had to "hurry up and get on with it". Instead of allowing my dog to meet this dog and then maybe I would have backed out, instead they rushed us to make a choice. The protocols in place are obviously in place for them to make money instead of making sure these animals are placed in loving homes. I really hope that dog is well taken care of since the officers also ignored that the adopters lied about having another animal at home. Shame on those officers for everything. Your job is to make sure these animals are taken care of and that means giving the time to make sure they get the time to be placed properly, not get the most money you can for them! read more

so disappointed in this animal shelter. my mother took in a stray dog that was possibly dumped in the woods by her house and kept him, bought him a bed & some toys, fed him, & allowed him to stay in her basement until the shelter opened back up this morning. (she has a rescue pitbull that leaves her unable to keep this poor baby) and after all of that - she brings him into the shelter today and gets accused of surrendering her own pet? because she had a brand new bed and toys to donate along with bringing this baby in? she called animal control, non emergency lines, & other shelters. she had to wait until you guys opened up and hope you had room. but accusing her of abandoning her own pet after all she did for this poor boy? SHAME ON YOU. read more

It is with sad regrets that I have to take away 2 stars. Please hear me out: Friday, an hour before the shelter closed, I adopted Thor, a 3-4 month old Rott mix, for my son. He was at his father's house until 7pm, so I took him straight to Petco to grab everything he needed. People were stopping me left and right to pet Thor and ask if I would sell him, people even came back twice to compliment him and pet him. When we got home, not even 10 minutes later, I was sudsing him up in the tub and noticed about 10-12 little bugs. Shit,he has fleas! GRR! I rushed him out of the house, still damp (sorry) to the vet before they closed, and so that I could return in time for my son to come home. They gave him a CapStar pill that kills all of the fleas in 20 minutes and then FrontLine to apply the next day when he was completely dry and another CapStar to give to him Sunday night, just in case. I paid for his first set of shots, and the vet did an assessment on him and said he looked like a great, "happy" puppy. I put Thor in the bathroom upstairs and waited for Kolten to come home. I video-taped him opening the door and yelling "DOG!" with delight, as he opened the door, and Thor rushed out and greeted him. Thor was very docile and a sweet puppy. Saturday Thor was perfect. Never had an accident which leads me to believe that he was a pet before and they house-broke him. We left him for 2 hours at a time to run errands and grocery shop and he was perfect. He scarfed his food faster than I could drop it in his bowl. Saturday night I was up throughout the night with him because he had diarrhea...bad. I wasn't sure if it was from the 5 vaccines he got, or if the flea medication was too harsh for him, or the change of puppy chow was making his belly ache. I gave him a tums chewable to help ease his discomfort. Sunday: I was exhausted. Thor wasn't perky and he refused to eat or drink. I was able to get him to choke down 3/4c of his puppy chow, by making him eat from the palm of my hand, late into the afternoon. He wouldn't even eat white bread that I broke and tried to feed him. Thor just laid around and didn't seem interested in anything. But when I sat on the floor he would crawl into my lap and sprawl out, looking for love and attention. Sunday evening, after some words of advice, I took him to the emergency vet. They did 2 fecal tests in the room, we waited 10 minutes and came back to tell me unfortunately they came back positive for roundworms and ParvoVirus. ParvoVirus is a highly contagious disease that affects canines. It can be spread by fleas from dog to dog (which Thor had), and the statistics all show: -Puppies under 5mos are the hardest to treat. They require the most aggressive treatment. -For some unknown reason: Rottweilers and Dobermans have the highest mortality rate. -The virus peaks when the animal encounters a stressor in it's life (like a change in environment). -It takes it's own course. Thor didn't stand a chance. He had 50 strikes against him, and even if he did stay overnight at the vet, no one would be there throughout the night to administer medications. I approved the vet to give him an injection of Pepto to calm his diarrhea and upset stomach, antibiotics to start the fight against the virus, antibiotics to cure the roundworms, and IV fluids to prevent dehydration and hypovolemic shock. They must have felt very bad for me, crying like a baby and my son crying on my shoulder because he didn't understand why I was crying. They waived the office visit fee, but I still swallowed the cost of everything else. I took home a bag of IV fluids and needles, and every 3 hours around the clock, I administered IV's to Thor and pumped him with 200mL of Lactated Ringers (think nutrient rich water--it's what we give to pregnant women too!) By morning time- Monday- not even 72 hours after adopting him, I had to carry Thor outside for him to go pee. His breathing was shallow and he was struggling. On the car-ride he was grunting. Thor had to be put to sleep. I cried and although he didn't understand, my son looked and said "dog?" waved and said "bye". That hit hard. When we spoke with the animal control officers that were there Friday when I adopted him and explained everything it didn't seem to faze them. They apologized and refunded my adoption fee--- which doesn't make it right or bring Thor back. I even tried opening their eyes to the fact that when I adopted Thor he wasn't quarantined, so who's to say that all of the other dogs there don't have the virus, from acceleration of the virus by fleas. They are just in cages right next to each other. And someone else might have to go through the same thing we just did. It's a shame that they operate this way, and that we got so attached so fast. This is why Thor "spoke" to me, and I had to adopt him. I just wish we had more time with him, and that he had a chance to experience love and affection. Please vaccinate your pets. read more

We adopted a cat from here. We were told she was a year old, they couldn't tell if she was fixed or not, came in as a stray and she didn't have a chip. We took her to the vet the next day and she had a chip that was registered and she was 12 years old, not one years old. Her owners have been looking for her for 5 months and taylor animal shelter failed to even look at her obviously. We contacted the original owners of the cat through Facebook and they came to pick her up as a family. Very sad to even have this happen honestly. When we went in to get our money back the animal control guy apologized and told us that they try not to take in animals that are old because they don't sell like the young ones do. Wow.....how terrible of them. read more

This is where I got my dog from who is great by the way. The staff isn't the friendliest. They have a good selection of dogs because I believe they shelter dogs from 3 city's. I would come here again to adopt. No sense in buying a pet when so many need homes. After you get your dog/cat fixed you get some of your shelter fee refunded. The staff, though only spoken to through social media due to the pandemic, we incredibly caring and helpful in our adoption of her. They are reasonably priced, and you get some of your money back if you get your pet spayed or neutered. They are already at a lower price if the animal is already fixed. Great experience and great pet that was well cared for there despite the pandemic conditions. read more

After finding a stray baby kitten near the trash bin of my residence, I grabbed one of my small cat carrying cases (I have two cats already and I am not allowed more), bought some kitten food and kitten milk. After I got the kitten inside of the case, I checked the nearest shelter online which happened to be this one (unfortunately). On their website, it states: "Any stray or injured domestic animal may be brought to the shelter for no charge if you're a resident of Taylor or Riverview." And so, I went there immediately to drop the poor baby off. I was told that they would not accept the kitten--NOT because they did not have room. Indeed--they did have room, however, the male animal control orderly came out to my car and held the kitten and determined they wouldn't take it because it had fleas. Of course it has fleas--most stray animals do including other ailments because they are exposed to the elements and other animals! I thought it was strange, but I didn't want to stop trying to find the kitten a place to go. I called several shelters, including a foster care place they provided me with which were all full at the moment. Finally, in desperation, I drove all the way to Westland MHS because I could not get anyone on the phone only to be told that Taylor Animal Shelter has a legal obligation to take any strays found inside their city into their shelter or to find a place for them. The animal control, the manager, and the supervisor were all called which I was still standing in MHS and they simply told the woman from Westland MHS that they were full and couldn't accept any more animals which is NOT what I was told when I was there thirty minutes prior! In my car, HIGHLY upset at this point, I called them back myself and requested to speak to a manager; I got animal control AGAIN who said, "oh, well two cats just got adopted so we'll go ahead and take the stray. We didn't want to take it because we don't want to get our other cats sick, but we will go ahead and take it now." When asked about a legal obligation, he brushed it aside and said, "there's no legal obligation; that's just how Michigan Humane Society is..." Ten minutes later, on my way BACK to Taylor Shelter, I was called directly by their supervisor telling me that they would accept the cat and to bring it in. When I got to the shelter, I was asked for ID which was simply copied. The original "paperwork" they said I needed to complete wasn't asked for; they hurried me along and told me to drive around where another animal control guy took the kitten by the nape of it's neck and didn't say a word to me about anything. This place is complete and utter garbage; I'm so disgusted with their lack of professionalism, it makes me want to throw up. I will never surrender any animal here again and I definitely won't take my pets here for any kind of treatment. read more

We wanted to adopt a dog this weekend. A puppy. We are experienced dog owners. This process of "bidding" for a dog is absolutely unheard of. The worker comes out to the crowd of people when they open. Says you have to have a debit or credit card. Starts the bid right there at 85$ and just goes. You don't get to meet the dog. No discussion of its health or care other than it's not house broken. They have NO clue what kind of owner is buying this dog. They simply want the most amount of money possible and that's it!!!! I've never heard of such an unprofessional and unskilled manner of adopting dogs out to good owners. It's a possible inhuman situation that this poor helpless creature is being thrown into. read more

This is not a review. Bidding war over dogs has been going on for years at animal shelters. Back in the early 80's I went to the Dearborn Animal shelter looking for a dog, the guy took me to look at all the dogs and told me if I find one I like to come back Thursday but if some one else wants the same dog you'll have to bid on it. Abused cat was in the crate and nobody seemed to wash him up, his fur was matted and dirty. The staff was very rude and uncaring.

If I could give this place no stars I would. A couple weeks ago I found this cat. Very friendly looked like a house cat. So with it being cold outside and me being an animal lover I took it in. Bought it food treats and put up posters in hopes to find it's home well nobody claimed it and I was going to keep it but it scratched my daughter not intentionally I don't think she was just trying to Pet it and the cat got frightened. So after that incident unfortunately I couldn't keep it so I brought the cat to this place with the food and treats explained what had happened and the guy didn't even look at the cat and told me to please keep it for a few more days that they were packed with cats to which I explained my situation again that I could not bring it back to my home and have it scratch my daughter again. So he open the box and looked at it and proceeded to tell me that it was a outside cat and that they could not take in outside cats to which I said it was very friendly and was in my home for a couple weeks and that I believed it was a house cat prior to me finding it and he argued with me back-and-forth that it was outside cat. So the lady behind the counter told him why don't we just take it in it will be gone in a couple days anyways. So the guy took it in the back and as I was filling out papers a different guy brought the box back to the counter and said that they could not take it that it was an outside cat to which I explained my situation over again to this guy and begged him to take it. He told me he would not and I asked him what he suggested that I do with it and he said I don't know take it somewhere and let it go. ( which I believe is illlegal and I would get in trouble for doing that) so again I begged him to please take it that I did not have the heart to do that and he told me no and was beinghe very cold and rude these people are not animal lovers and are in the wrong profession. These people are supposed to be here to help and instead all I got was rudeness. And might I add that I have made donations to this place before and I will never do it again!!! I fear for the animals that currently reside here or being dropped off. I unfortunately had to come here to drop off a very tiny kitten found at my place of work. It was not fairing well. Being an animal lover myself I was already emotional about the whole situation. I was not able to keep the kitten. There was an older women there who was very sweet but was a volunteer I'm assuming. All she could do was point me to the front desk. The young woman there texted someone to see if they could take another kitten ( which I was thankful for) but was harsh speaking i.e.: if it's dead we can't take it, if it's sick we can't take it.... I fully understand there are stipulations but this place is suppose to be a SHELTER. Then an older man came out from the back asked what it was, where i found it , that I would have to pay a $50 drop off fee, absolutely no concern for the animal!!! He was very unfriendly, disconnected and rude. I took the kitten and went to the Romulus shelter. Just walking in there was way different vibe and the woman at the counter was concerned and caring and started to look the kitten over right away no questions asked. ROMULUS is how a shelter should be! Taylor really needs to reevaluate their staffing choices. Please if you must surrender an animal DO NOT bring them to Taylor animal shelter! read more

My family and I went in there and adopted a dog last week. We were told a few different stories about an American Bulldog that we had met, as well as told what an amazing dog he was. We decided to adopt the dog and not 10 minutes after we got home, the dog attacked my boyfriend due to a food aggression, which is something that can be easily detected during a temperament test but the shelter does NOT give these tests. We were made aware AFTER the dog was taken by Woodhaven Animal Control that the Taylor Shelter knew that the dog had no shots, including rabies, which by law is required in the state of Michigan. We were not told about any of these things at the shelter, but after the fact. Now because of this, my boyfriend's hand is mauled and broken and we all are traumatized from this incident. I personally feel that the Animal Shelter should be held responsible for what has happened, and when I went in there to explain the situation the workers were so rude and just heartless. The only thing they could tell me is that "They are not a veterinary hospital, so why would they run tests and vaccinate??" No remorse or even something as simple as an apology. We now have thousands of dollars of medical bills, and he may not be able to use his hand because of this. If something is not done about this, or it is not made right, the next person may not be so lucky, and an innocent child could even be killed by an aggressive dog. This is something that could have been so easily prevented, if someone would have just taken the time. I will NEVER recommend people to go to that shelter as the same thing could happen to there family. read more

I am absolutely disturbed every time I go to the Taylor shelter. There is blood in cages, open wounds on dogs/puppies,feces not cleaned up and the dogs are starving. They get minimal food and when I bring them "treats" they eat like they haven't eaten in a week. Most of the workers there are extremely rude and could care less about any of the animals. I was told that pit bulls are going to be banned and that I should not be allowed to adopt the pit bull puppy I was holding at that moment. I was told that all pit bulls should be PTS because they are " mean". I tried to reason with the worker but it was in vain. I DID adopt that pit that day and made sure the others were rescued that day before "he" got the chance to kill them. I have been to and adopted many animals in my life from various shelters/rescues and the Taylor shelter is one of the worst. I adopt from there every chance I get because you can't help but feel so bad for the little angels. They do NOT get medical care even though they tell you that they do. Their policies need to change asap and they need to find some new caring workers. Most of them do not have souls and just don't care. When you work at an animal shelter, it's more than a job. You really do need to have compassion for the neglect and abuse that these animals have gone through and sadly being in this shelter they continue to go through.
