In addition, Glenn knows SO many people, that you will have great inside information for getting a job upon completing the course. The second instructor, Nick, is also very good. The DOT test is done on site at the school! That means you are on your "home course' for the test. The class is flexible and the environment for learning is relaxed and still very thorough. It's kind of a combination of what you need balanced with what you are capable of doing. The pass rate is well over 90%. I got a GREAT job right after I got my CDL.

After college, Dale Chihuly had the opportunity to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice on a Fulbright. On his return he founded the glass program at RISD and the Pilchuck school on forestland in Stanwood. The buildings in a rough Northwest style were made from trees cut and milled on site. Many of the glass buildings are open at the sides, cooling the glass furnace glory holes which run continuously. The students who live on on the land work any hours of the day and night as well. There is a more structured Summer program with international, national and regional artists leading themed classes. There is an emphasis in the program to introduce non-glass artists to glass. Glass art is a tricky thing. It can be too beautiful. Dale Chihuly is a larger than life artist, founder of the American modern glass movement, and from friends who have worked for him, generous. But glass art can't be judged by the heady aesthetics of contemporary art. So the contemporary art world often gives a cold shoulder to glass, and Chihuly specifically. That's unnecessary. Glass art is glass art. The Northwest would not be a world class glass center without his vision and ambition. The Pilchuck school has a once a year open house, one day. They also host tours for established groups seven days in May. That is the only opportunity for the public to visit. There is a fee for visitors, $20-$25+. It's fascinating to see all the glass art experiments scattered around the studios and residences. It's one of those dream artist residencies. We don't have castles here, but we have trees. And the buildings, many artist-built, are a great tribute to the trees on the land from which they grew. Well worth applying as an artist if you want to challenge yourself with glass. If you are curious about glass art, it is a very special place to visit on the rare days it's open. World class glass.

We got to sample lots of the instructor's bread at the end of class and took home our own breads, which were HUGE. Plenty to share with family and I froze some too.

For $150/person we got over 2+ hours of instruction plus creating our ornament. Our experience began with learning about the basics of glass blowing. We watched him perform each skill and then we each got a chance to do it ourselves. Next, we picked out which Christmas ornament we would like to create. There is so much customization possible! He had great suggestions to help our visions come to life. Lastly, we created our ornaments one by one. We had to leave our ornaments in the kiln for about an hour, so Jason recommended Paddle Stick pub for us to grab lunch. When we came back, they were beautifully wrapped. It was a wonderful holiday activity, and we have handmade ornaments to treasure forever.

Outstanding art work and compassionate It has been a year…read moresince I lost my biggest love and companionship, it is hard to understand for some people when we are taking about a pet but after I had the chance to spoke with Jason about what I wanted with Precious my cat ashes and his personal experience. I knew he was the artist I wanted for making a unique memorial piece. He designed the orb to look like as I used to call her "my little universe" She had a very pink nose and the small dot where the light comes from in the orb is pink glass , that way I can still kiss her in the nose, I have spent the year traveling and I take her with me everywhere I go.
