Walked here on a lunch break with a coworker during COVID, evidenced by lots of social distancing signage, blue tape on the floor for checkout spacing, and toilet paper/paper towel rolls being sold a la carte at the front of the store (limit 2 of each). It's a hometown hardware store with less stock and higher prices than Lowe's and Home Depot. Plenty of parking in shared shopping center lot. Some persnickety employees (grumpy old men) but majority are friendly, helpful when available. Place is well kept, fairly clean, and pretty easy to navigate. A co-worker needed some random bolts, a soldering iron, and a few electronic ends. I was looking for a 9/16" LH threaded bolt or tap to repair a bike. I struck out but he scored his hardware bounty. Not a wasted trip, especially on foot during a lunch break. If you absolutely need something for a home repair or improvement project but don't have time to search all over, this may not be the one stop you choose.

    2019 plants for the garden.

Since moving to Chesapeake 3 years ago I've been buying my garden starter plants here. The plants have been consistently well developed and healthy and considerably cheaper than the big box stores up by the interstate. I've also picked up some other garden accessories here as well such as nets for pole beans and an awesome all metal sprinkler last year. In addition I have another story to share regarding one of locksmiths here. Last spring (2018) I had a very old key that I needed duplicated and they were unable to do it as blanks aren't made for that type of key anymore and they were out of them. The locksmith went the extra mile and let me know about another locksmith in the city that could help me out. He didn't have to do that, and it was very appreciated. Great place, friendly people. I'll be using them for years to come.

Not Home Depot for sure. But quaint...and convenient.

They sell chicken coops people! Chicken coops! But you're probably not going to Taylor's for a chicken coop--you're probably going there for an around-the-house pieces part that you need and you either 1) don't want to drive all the way to the big box home improvement center to get it, or 2) you just want to support a local small business. Both options are good ones and you'll leave satisfied knowing you did either or both. However . . . Don't come to Taylor's expecting to find a unique widget for a broken piece of whatever you have. It's likely Taylor's won't have it...and if they do, it will probably be more expensive than at a big box store. For me, walking in to Taylor's and oftentimes smelling the popcorn they have for their customers brings back some very fond memories of shopping at the five and dime when I was a kid. Keep some reasonable shopping expectations before you walk through the door and you'll enjoy their friendly staff and limited selection.

Totally unlike a "big box" store, we can quickly find what we need, or we can take our time and stroll around.

That said, there are times when you simply need the scale and inventory that only a larger retailer can provide. When that need arises, I find myself at the Lowe's Home Improvement on Battlefield Boulevard in the heart of Chesapeake. The store offers a comprehensive selection of tools, materials, and household essentials--everything you need to tackle projects both large and small. What truly sets this location apart, however, is the staff. The team is consistently approachable, knowledgeable, and willing to help you find exactly what you need or point you in the right direction. While I'll always lean toward supporting local businesses first, it's reassuring to know that when the situation calls for it, this Lowe's delivers both selection and service.

I went to buy a premium dishwasher in the store and after wasting an hour with several associates they couldn't get their computer system to work correctly so they couldn't order the unit. No problem I was able to order it on line or so I thought. Then after hearing nothing I reached out to find out when they were going to install, they weren't sure but someone would call me. That's when you meet Company X, a third party that is supposed to handle the delivery and install. Company X sets up a time for the "install" but they didn't say that was to verify the measurements not to install. I get a call from Company Z, he's an independent contractor that works for Company X who is a third party vendor who works for Lowe's! Company Z gets confused about dates and says he's not sure why they need to measure he thought he was hired to install. So nobody has come out to measure except for me and I know it will fit and it's my money any ways. So I call Lowes who says they have to have me talk to Company X, and 30 minutes later I am still on hold with Company X listening to Mozart I think. You don't want to do business with Lowe's, Company X and I can't tell you about Company Z.

A lot of automotive stuff to look through which I wasn't expecting. The reason I chose to write the review is because of the super friendly and helpful staff. It is well organized, and I can go straight to what I am looking for and get in and out relatively quickly. This is a no-frills operation. I would never pop in to look around because it just does not have that kind of appeal. I need a real reason to be there. Thankfully they have great sales and coupons frequently. The staff is available but not too excited about answering many questions. They are not negative or unkind; they are just not customer service oriented. They stock the shelves and sell the stuff on them, Period! The store is always well stocked, and you can order online and pick it up in the store. If you need help deciding which tool to use for your project, you probably need to shop elsewhere to receive that kind of input.
