I don't know who the owner, or manager or leadership is for this building, but every time I come here, I will walk past workers standing around talking, they never greet you, never ask you if they can help you find anything. Or they just brush past you as they did today as you struggle to find what you come in there to spend your hard-earned money on. Today I was looking for mouse traps. If it wasn't such a drive, I would go to Lowe's. If I'm going to have to search for something I might as well pay less for it. This is why people shop online. Brick and mortar businesses need to wake up. At this point you're nothing more than convenience stores for whatever items you sell. Customer service and location are the last things you have going for you. This is sad for me to write because I grew up in a family hardware store where the expectation was to greet your customers, always help customers find what they need, and ensure that they have a good experience while in your business. read more

Negative 10. Just moved here a few months ago from Montana. We were fortunate to have a good hardware store five minutes from our house before and were excited to support a local hardware store here. Well, that's not happening with this store! My husband is 78 yo sweet and friendly man. He just came back from the Colley location and was treated so badly that he's never going back and I'm never going to start. My husband put his basket on the counter to check out and this older guy says "empty your basket. This isn't a grocery store. " and proceeds to FLIP THE BASKET OVER AND DUMP EVERYTHING OUT! The guy rings up the items and my husband swipes the credit card and guy starts yelling at him to "Tap it up here!" Jeez. Marketing wisdom that this company should remember is that when a customer is happy with a product or a store, they tell 3-4 people. When they are UNHAPPY, they will tell a minimum of 11 and probably more because they are so upset. They will tell the mailman, their hairstylist, their kids, their vet, their family, their friends, their dentist and their mechanic. Word-of-mouth alone is a POWERFUL marketing tool but now we also have apps like Yelp and Nextdoor. Consistent good customer service is a critical foundation for the long-term health of any company. Customers are even willing to pay a little more just to be treated well. You blew it, Taylor's! Treating a kindly old gentleman like dirt just because he put his basket on the counter? Seriously? I would call the store and visit with the manager but based on multiple bad reviews, that would be an exercise in futility. Also, don't forget to be imaginative when venting about poor service. When you clearly have signs about only allowing two bags of snow salt per customer but then allow people to buy five bags plus while others are waiting and you sell out is unacceptable. Had a guy who had just walking out with two bags come in and take the last two left which I though he must had paid for but then walks up the the register laughing with the cashier that he just got the last two also. Very funny. I decided to leave without ruining the mornings. read more

I've been a few times and it's really been a mix. Sometimes they are really helpful and are met with a warm greeting. We got our Xmas tree here and it was a great experience. Other times though employees will not even look you in the eye or say a single word. My latest experience was calling to see if they had sternos and was put on hold for quite some time before being hung up on. A odd mix of 5 star experiences and 1 star experiences. read more

There are most always plenty of employees to help you, easy parking, clean, and love the old school hardware store feel. My biggest gripe would be how you can't go straight to the place across the street to get mulch or your propane tank refilled and pay there. Should be an easy solution to have credit card only sales and swipe w/ a credit card reader. Still give it a 4 star rating. read more

I live only blocks away and have shopped here for over 15 years. However I refuse to put my life on the line for convenience. None of the employees wear masks to protect customers. Yesterday an employee walking up fast and close asking me if he could help almost got a 6' back or 6' under reply. I wish I could select "Zero " I witnessed and experienced the Assistant Manager "Doc" being hostile and verbally demeaning to a female patron and then I had a milder version of his rude behavior while attempting to return an item with a receipt. Hit and miss. DO NOT BY LUMBER HERE! This is not the place to get wood! No jokes. The hostility in one of the guys at the pick up yard, and the other one that won't shut up about the managers makes you not want to drive into the gate to get your pick up. Who does the hiring? It's convenient to go here instead of Lowe's or Depot, and it's great when you find what you are looking to buy. The quality of some of the things isn't the greatest, but they still carry bigger brands. read more

This is a pretty good hardware store for the Ghent area of Norfolk. It is centrally located and easy to get to. I've been there a couple times, but only for small things (do I look like the kind of girl who takes on big-time home projects? the answer is no) However, I found the staff very helpful with the things I did need when I went in and were willing to spend a little extra time with me going over some products and comparing the differences. They have a good selection of flower in the Spring/Summer (hanging flower pots etc) and also sell Christmas trees for a brief time in the Winter. If you live right in the heart of the Ghent area, or in Park Place this is a pretty good place to come and pick up hardware supplies without having to go to a huge store. read more

Nice to have this place so handy. I can't stand big box home improvement stores, and will avoid them any chance I can. For the small projects and quick repairs, Taylor's is a godsend, they have a little bit of everything....including popcorn at the door as you enter :) For the most part, the staff is very helpful and willing to spend some time with you to help find what you need...although if you have to return or exchange something, it's a bit of an ordeal. It involves filling out a form (name, address, phone), calling management to the register, yada,yada. Really a bit over the top for something as minimal as exchanging a $1.25 piece of pvc . I didn't so much mind it, but I hated that it was holding up the growing line of customers waiting to check out so they could get back home to their respective projects. No stars. Bought a new Stihl chainsaw here last may. Got upsold on high priced Stihl fluids for an extended warranty.. Used it maybe 3 times. Not even 3 tanks of gas. Switch went out had to unplug the spark to cut it off. Stihl said take it back to Taylors for service. (Worst mistake ever) Got extorted $35 for a diagnostics fee. Yeah pay more for my warranty. Furious but I get it.. 2 weeks go by had to call for info. (Mind you they have a Stihl kiosk right at the front door thats how I signed in to receive my saw. "Once you've used our tech and made your purchase our tech isnt for you" hmmm) extremely unprofessional. Guess my review on their site left a bad taste. Guy on the phone told me $10.17.. Now Im livid. Another guy callwd me back and told me $45.17 Didnt make it to the store till the second guy had left. Matt was his name. Tryed to charge me the full cost including my $35 deposit. Its clearly in black and white on my their invoice 10.17 due. For a list of garbage charges for adjusting the switchpole. If the invoice total was 74- for labor -35 I couldnt argue. But this guy tryed to extort another $35 Warranty void. For using my saw. Need a chainsaw, go elsewhere. Need to fix one? Look here stay away from there. Service is infantile or Jurassic. Prices are high, and staff knowledge and help are mediocre. read more

Convenient location, but pretty expensive and they're not taking the pandemic crisis seriously. About two-thirds of employees aren't wearing masks and they're not all practicing social distancing within a tight space (and kudos to the one clerk who helped me who WAS wearing a mask and being very careful about appropriate distance.) The manager has chosen not to make mask wearing a condition of employment, including for the cashiers, who are behind plexiglass but constantly walking out from behind it. Businesses who aren't taking this crisis seriously will lose customers, including me. As someone with a friend younger than I am who's spent 14 days on a ventilator and who's still in ICU, I don't appreciate businesses who are being careless. read more

Two. They have most household necessities but you better believe it's more like Taylor's Do Absolutely Everything Yourself Center. Got a fire pit and was directed to pick it up next door at their satellite warehouse. The warehouseman who was working that day led me back I to the warehouse, pointed to a pile of rain damaged cardboard boxes with the model fire pit we just purchased and suggested I find one less damaged. The cashier working that day seemed to be a bit clueless when asked about purchasing a fire pit: "fire pit? What's that?" Will return for items that are needed quickly but I know what to expect upon arrival. read more

Unfortunately this is no longer my favorite quick stop hardware store. I try to shop local despite cost but after three years of shopping here I will no longer be going back. I went to purchase more of an item I'd gotten the year before that had worked well. They charged me double the despite the sign with the 9" numbers declaring the alternate, lesser price. The rude manager kept insisting that I was requesting a previous years price because I'd happened to mentioned to the salesman when I arrived that the item I wanted was something I'd gotten last year as well. The seriously unfortunate part of this is that he refused to even take the word of his employee that perhaps he'd written the wrong SKU down because the price was lower. Not a single one of these stellar employee offered to actually go to the product and look at the sign, the SKU or anything else. They were too busy insisting that I was wrong and being uncooperative. :/ In the end I had them refund all of the items I'd purchased and went to Lowe's where I got them all for $37.21 less and a smile and hello from three employees. Nice and convenient, though certainly second tier compared to the mega-centers like Lowes and Home Depot. Decent (not great) selection of smaller potted plants outside that were decently priced. Basic selection of gardening supplies on the inside. Went there on a weekend and they had fresh popped popcorn which kept everyone happy. For bigger or more specific purchases hit up the bigger stores; but if what you want is fairly common this is a great local option. read more

I bought a gas fireplace from the unenthusiastic manager of Fireworks! within the Taylor store. After having it installed we learned that the gas burner was improperly manufactured, making it unsafe for home use. Taylor arranged to have a new one sent to us in a timely manner yet they refused to fully reimburse us for the second installation. It took me about 10 months and a series of visits to the store to finally get a check. They would only reimburse me $60 for the second installation. My heating/plumbing guy doesn't work that cheap. Whose does? Go to Ray Johnson's on Virginia Beach Blvd instead for your new fireplace. read more

When we moved here, I counted it as a big plus that our new home was blocks away from a hardware store. Taylor's on Colley has not disappointed. After ten years, I can only think of one time when I needed to go to a big box store for a hardware item. Also, if I need 6 nuts, I don't want to have to buy a package with ten nuts and unneeded bolts. When you have an unusual problem or need a screw or bolt with superior strength, the staff at Taylor's helps you find it. Sometimes packages of hardware made in China just aren't good enough. I discovered that anything on the Do It Center site can be ordered and picked up through the store to avoid shipping charges. That is likely true of big box stores, too, but why would I want to drive to Military Highway for the right-sized washer, or a plant stake, or grass seed, etc, etc? What I've saved in gas money!! And I have helped to support a neighborhood business. Win-win. read more
