A 5 star experience for a recent Mother's Day arrangement of flowers. There is no day like Mother's Day and making it special for Mom. So the idea of a permanent planted arrangement seemed like something perfect for the patio. McDonald's was contacted over the phone a week + out before Mother's Day. I worked with Patrice who emailed different ideas they could do from pots to plants etc. He was so passionate about his trade and left me even more excited that he alone would be the point. Ultimately hydrangeas was chosen as the plant with sweet potatoes. They had many pots to choose from, but a more neutral with a butterfly seemed perfect. The cost was $97. Patrice assured that the plant would be watered and ready for pick up days before Mother's Day. On Saturday I went to McDonald's and after locating Patrice he rolled the plant out. I must say I was overwhelmed with the size. It was huge and gorgeous! Patrice did a video of care instructions as he took ownership of seeing everything through. He also at no charge through in a ceramic tray to hep with transport, but also for any leakage of water with a weep hole at the bottom. The delivery was marvelous and enjoyed by Mom. I cannot say enough positive about this experience. Other staff assisted me and were helpful and enthusiastic about their job. You just don't see this in other big box places ole Lowes and Home Depot. McDonald's is a one stop locally owned since 1947 garden center. They can do it all and the visit is impressive to see the selections. Highly recommend. read more

What a great selection! Wide variety of flowers,herbs,veg,ect. Plenty of space to walk around even though it was getting busy for the event they have going on. And they do quiet a few so keep an eye out for those since the do child and adult events. Go here for he best selection of anything landscaping! A little pricey but the selection can't be beat. And the care they put into everything is very obvious. ** NOTE: If something you purchase with a warranty (all shrubs and trees?) dies, you MUST bring the dead remains in for a refund. Not even photos with the receipt will suffice. Lesson learned, although I hope there's no next time for something dying. read more

McDonald Garden Center is a fairyland. They offer a huge amount of quality products with a wonderful presentation. In addition to the outside displays, there are green houses, buildings, & large mounds of mulch & dirt. Even the checkout "barn" has shelves on the walls offering utensils & other items used for gardening. Walk out of checkout to rolls of plastic for use in protecting your vehicle as you transport your treasures home. The organization is wonderful. Walk in to shopping with featured items on each side of the pathway. Straight ahead are stacked shelves featuring flowers currently in season for planting. As you walk these outside aisles you will many times find sales. To the left of the flower aisles are rows and rows of pots & planters of every size. To the right are so many aisles & sections that you could almost get lost. You'll find sections of shrubs, fruit bushes, trees of all sizes, fruit trees suitable for our climate, flowering bushes, actually just about anything. On the far north side of this section is a cute building featuring decorative pots, some filled with plants & flowers. If you enter the nursery and take a hard left you pass through tables of featured plants. Keep walking & you'll find my favorite to the right. It's the herb section, featuring herbs of all sizes. But be certain to come early. As the weather gets warmer they are put on sale and by the first break in the heat, are almost completely gone. Beyond the herbs are a plethora of plants and decorative grasses. To the south of this section is a greenhouse that you'll want to explore. The far back southeast section features barns whose uses vary from season to season. Right now they are a fairyland of Christmas Trees and ornaments. Each tree is decorated with a theme. Ornaments that are featured on each tree are available for single purchase in baskets surrounding the tree. You can also purchase a tree like each featured one. There are aisles of Christmas ornaments, lights wreaths & other decorations. Whatever your theme is, items can be found that fit. I love the beachy ones. Drive straight to the back, when you enter, to find bulked or bagged mulch & soil. You can choose the type of mulch you prefer. Oh.....How lovely fresh mulch smells!! Don't miss the other special events, such as the Crepe Myrtle Festival. The location is the east side of Independence Boulevard, just north of Haygood Shopping Center. There's no way you can miss it. A large area by the road is landscaped beautifully and features the seasonal blooming flowers. Right now it's decorated for Christmas. Watch for the tasteful lights & decorations. I visited the pop-up McDonald Garden Center in Williamsburg on John Tyler HW and purchased 2 patio pots of Angelonia, a robust, heat- and deer-resilient summer annual. The plants were beautiful, if pricey ($44.99 each). I had intended to separate them and plant some in other pots. I was disappointed with the soil in which they were potted--brown and kind of like peat moss. I assume that this soil was chosen to hold water, but these plants wilted in the sun even when their soil was moist. I ended up separating them to add a few to other pots (and keep some in the original container), but had to change the soil twice to get what seems to be the right mixture for them--I used a combination of miracle grow and some succulent soil for drainage, ditching the peat moss. The plants seem to be bouncing back and happy with their new soil. However, for the price, it doesn't seem right that I had to apply such TLC to ensure that these new plants survive. For quality of plants in Williamsburg, head over the Ulster Homestead garden center or the Coleman nursery. Their plants are perfect and don't need any additional TLC, in my experience. read more

We've always been a big fan of McDonald Garden Center. For literally the last 15+ years. In March, we decided to purchase a large fiddle leaf fig tree for our living room. It was a big purchase for us, as it was over $150. I made sure to ask lots of questions regarding the care that the plant would require. The people were nice, and seemed knowledgeable...which is the reason why we go there (especially for a large specialty purchase), instead of someplace like Lowe's or Home Depot. Fast forward to yesterday...I finally decided to call after watching my tree go downhill over the last 2-3 weeks. It has black spots on almost every leaf, several leaves have fallen off, and it just looks overall...sad. Let me first say that I was NOT looking to return this tree, or get my money back for it...just wanted some help on how to make things better. Called, and the young lady I spoke with told me a manager would call me back. Later that day, I received a call from Sarah, a manager in houseplants at the Va Beach/Independence location (which is where we purchased the tree). She was nice at first, but became very snarky- mocking me when I corrected her when she said that the spots on the leaves were brown, but are actually black.... She also told me to that it probably needed to be repotted. SERIOUSLY?? I asked that very question when we purchased it, and was told no, it was fine! Why wasn't I told that? This tree was very expensive and is now an eyesore in my living room! Sarah also told me that I should probably move it outside on my back porch. Again...seriously?! I did not spend $150+ on a tree for my back porch! I asked all the questions, described where I would be putting the tree (what the lighting was like, the temperature, etc), and was told that the tree was a good choice. While I initially called for help/advice...after hearing what she told me about it needing to be repotted...I feel like this now falls on them and their staff. I should have been provided that information, especially since I asked! She continued with an attitude, and told me "thank you for letting her know, and she'll certainly address this with her staff"...and even admitted that I should have been told to I repot it...but never once offered to replace the tree... Hindsight- maybe going to Lowe's or Home Depot would have been a better choice! Or for something specialty like this, next time I will go to a different garden center. I told a few friends about this experience yesterday and was told to go to Anderson's Home and Garden next time... Maybe I'll try that! read more

I love this Garden Shop! It's a nice place to get lost in for a couple of hours gazing through. They have so many flowers, plants, vegetables, and all things garden here. I feel the prices is a little more than what you will find at Home Depot (HD) or Lowe's BUT the quality is so much better. For example, I bought some vegetables from HD and the plants is either not producing the vegetables or it died. But all my vegetables I bought from McDonald's are thriving!! The cucumbers and the summer squash I had so far had a nice taste. I found some hard to find plants like an Eucalyptus. I'm excited about that. This will always be the best place for plants for me! read more

Visited 10/23 First visit after following garden centers on IG. They offered 30% off pansies and 3 for $10 pumpkins which got me in. THIS is NOT a wheel chair accessible business. We were there on a Saturday after 1 pm and not one time over 90 mins did we see anyone available to help us customer service wise until check out and three cashiers. Yes they have selection. YES they are expensive. Floored that a tall grass was $45! and no small options. Wanted to discuss fall planting of bushes but again no one worked there except cashiers. in order to get a sale price YOU must give ALL your personal information and be a "marketing" member. 40% off MuMs 30% off pansies $98 for two small mums, three 6" pansies, one 4" green and three pumpkins. I found this expensive. So many plants did not have prices and since I couldn't find help I didn't even bother. This garden center needs to fix all the door entrance and exits to allow wheelchairs to roll in and out safely. Three times my chair tipped into pot holes and cracked small concrete door ramps. read more

This place is HUGE! I was so overwhelmed walking in (I am not a plant person). I was going because I had an issue with two plants and was seeing if someone could help. Good news? Someone did help a bit. She wasn't the nicest, but she did her best to help me. She had to Google a few times, but I appreciated the effort. New year, new obsession for my wife: indoor plants. She hates snakes but insisted on getting a snake plant (go figure). Cue the Sun afternoon McD's visit for 1 stop shopping at a family owned, locally grown nursery instead of bargain hunting with the potential of hitting an ungodly number of "maybe" big box places. Convenient and plentiful parking. On entry, you're left to wander about. Lots of employees around to get layout info, plant pointers and care instructions. PRO TIP: be on the lookout for sales, specials and mark downs throughout the entire nursery. Headed to the main garden house and hit the indoor plant mother-load post-restroom pitstop. After consulting a friendly expert employee for a good while, we left with a pothos plant and a snake plant; learned both are poisonous to dogs/pets which meant stopping at IKEA for a plant stand. PRO TIP: sign up for their "garden rewards" loyalty program to receive e-coupons and specials. read more

Get everything from house plants to geraniums to planters to pumpkins here. Love the selection. We also recently hired their landscaping team to redo our front beds. Got on the schedule after about 6 weeks. Work wrapped.up this week and we couldn't be happier. It's a total transformation to our house. They removed 16 plants and shrubs, extended the beds, added metal edging, and installed 48 new shrubs and plants. It was great working with Mari and Julia and the installation crew. Wow! What a great nursery. We visited from out of town specifically for a small indoor bonsai for my son. The space is well thought out with a map at the entrance. I always love a trip to McDonald Garden Center! The place is lovely and styled fresh for every season. I was there recently to get some Christmas poinsettias and the displays were beautiful. The prices are not always the best when compared to other local garden centers, but the quality of the plants seems high. They have a free membership option that offers some discounts- definitely worth signing up for! There is also a full selection of pots, gardening supplies, and garden decor. The space is large enough that there are unexpected little niches to take a break from shopping like the "Grillin in the Garden" event going on today and a beautiful shaded outdoor patio. McDonald GC was one of the most pleasurable plant shopping experiences I've had in HR. We'll definitely be back to find more items to fill out the garden. read more

The gentlemen who did the removal and the new install were sweethearts and worked their tails off. When they left the new yard was beautiful and you would have never known they'd been here. First two times I went here, the ladies working in the greenhouse area were super helpful and gave phenomenal customer service all around. Also, there's just something so tranquil about being surrounded by plants--in part, because plants signify life and inspire contemplation. But, that woo woo zen raindrop soundtrack in my head all came to a tapestop when I went to check out. At the register, I asked, "what are your best recommendations for taking care of this ficus?" And YOU KNOW WHAT SHE SAID? She said... And I quote: "Google it." Mary Poppins, what. She better be glad she didn't say "bing it." I don't think it's an absurd expectation that employees know about the products they sell. I mean, imagine walking into Best Buy: "Hi. How may I help you today?" "Ah, yes sir, I am inquiring about your Samsung QLED 4K series." And they were like, "heavens, those acronyms cause me irritable bowel syndrome. I plead you to Google it." But, okay okAyyyyyy... Amazing selection! One of the most substantial nurseries I have ever seen with an atmosphere that makes you forget you are in a store and feels more like a botanical garden. Some of the prices are a bit high compared to other nurseries I have been to but if you look you can also find some really amazing deals. I was able to find quite a few starter plants for under $5! The staff is readily available, easy to find, and very friendly if you have any questions about the plants. My wife is the gardener and has thoroughly enjoyed their very wide selection of trees, flowers, plants, pottery, local jams and honey. The staff is always very helpful and knowledgeable and the grounds are just packed with everything that you need for your yard or garden, I only wish that they had pond stuff, i.e. water plants and flowers. A gorgeous, part-indoor part-outdoor gardening center that has everything a green thumb could possibly want, from garden decorations to patio furniture to seeds and plants of all shapes and sizes. My boyfriend and I visited to find a new plant child to take home and ended up adopting two lovely houseplants: a triostar stromanthe and a snake plant! They had just about every type of houseplant you could think of though, and in many different sizes / life stages. The plants here are kept and tended to beautifully and every specimen we looked at appeared healthy and vibrant.
