I wouldn't let her operate on you. Everything she told me about the procedure was heavily padded with descriptions of how simple the surgery is and how easy recovery is. I just passed two years since she removed an ovarian cyst and my body has never been the same. About three weeks post-op, I developed severe lower abdominal bloating and distension and related GI issues that have never, ever left me. Not even for a day. Despite doctors determining that my abdominal wall has changed as a result of the surgery, Varkey insists the surgery, which took place in the same exact spot as all of my symptoms, all of which occurred suddenly one night only a few weeks after my surgery, has no relation to it whatsoever. When I pushed a bit harder that the timing is not a coincidence, she insisted that I, "wanted the surgery," as if the complications were my fault??? 1. She is the Dr and I followed her medical advice, I never forced her to operate on me. 2. I never accused her of doing something wrong during surgery at all, and she quickly pointed a finger at me. I was trying to get her to see the relationship so that she could help me and flag this as a potential, but rare, negative outcome from the surgery. Instead, it triggered her, when its just a fact and not personal. and I have seen her be emotional on multiple occasions that make me feel uncomfortable with her. Seeking medical help is not an attack, Dr. Varkey. She said she has never had patients with complications or complications of my kind. I implore her to consider that she will never have a patient with complications if she is in denial that their health issues have any relation to the surgery. Her denial of the reality is why I feel inclined to leave a review, that's what was the most concerning part of this. As I was having yet another terrible night in pain, I coudlnt help but feel so hopeless that ive suffered so much and she doesn't even see it as related. Hopefully someone who is considering her as their surgeon will see this and know that this is something that happened, even if it was a rare outcome. That doesnt mean this will happen to you. She also doesn't take insurance, which is a really, really notable behavior in this economy. I will seek a doctor who treats my medical needs as legitimate and also believes poor people deserve healthcare too. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Varkey ever since I moved to LA and it's been 6 years. Having Dr. Varkey as my OBGYN is the best decision I've ever made medical wise. Not only is Dr. Varkey very experienced/skilled at what she does, but also she's super friendly and personable. You rarely find a medical professional like her these days. Review is for billing staff. Have been a patient at Dr. Varkeys for 7 years now and previously had no issues. Staff was accommodating and great at call backs, scheduling appointments etc. Began having problems with this office when I reluctantly agreed to speaking over the phone with Dr.Varkey's PA, Chelsea instead of Dr. Varkey. Office failed to inform me I was being billed per minute of having a phone conversation with Chelsea the PA. My insurance didn't cover the entire amount of speaking to Chelsea over the phone and Chelsea failed to mention I was being charged by the minute as our conversation dragged on. Office handled the situation unprofessionally when I contacted them explaining the situation. Emailed me saying I would be "discharged as a patient" from their office if I didn't pay the same day! On top of their threat of discharging me as a patient , they intentionally didn't submit my insurance with the labs I had testing with, so I received several bills from the labs. I had to call myself because Dr varkeys office failed to add my insurance onto the lab work. Also, I referred my friend to Dr. Varkeys office in the past and she mentioned she would never go there as whoever answered the phone was extremely rude and had an attitude. read more

TW: Use of profane language by the doctor I've hesitated on posting this because doctors have power and I didn't want to risk any retaliation by sharing this interaction. Still, she was so rude and presumptuous. I've been a patient of this doctor for 2 years: I saw her once for my 2021 annual, and then again this year. During this year's exam, she suspected fibroids. Following that appointment, I have gone in 3 additional times for: a pelvic ultrasound, a hysteroscopy, and then she referred me to get a pelvic MRI. I saw her on 22 June 2022 to review the results of the MRI and go over treatment options for the fibroids. I'm writing this to warn current and future patients of her unprofessional behavior. After reviewing the purpose of the visit (which I appreciated), she said she was going to list treatment options. The first thing she said was, "We can remove your uterus." To confirm I heard her correctly, I repeated it back to her "Remove my uterus?" and she said immediately to me in a snippy tone, "Don't lose your sh*t! I had a sixth sense you were going to lose your sh*t. Just listen, ok." I did not yell, scream or raise my voice when I asked this question. I was shocked at her behavior. I got very quiet and nodded. I kind of shut down while still trying to process the information she presented. I'm a grown woman. I've never had any medical professional address me in such a way. In life and in my appointments, I ask questions in a calm, methodical way to make sure I understand. If this were a male gynecologist who said this to me, I would have immediately gotten up and said the appointment was over. It was my mistake to take her abusive language and sit there quietly. After listening to the information she presented, she asked, "You know your uterus is enlarged, right?" I said to her I didn't know because I don't know what the size of a regular uterus is supposed to be. She responded, "Ok, that's fair." I'm not sure how or what she is judging to be "fair". I'm not a medical professional so my knowledge base is not the same as hers. It's part of her job to answer questions a patient has when discussing a condition or treatment, and to explain things in such a way a layperson understands to make an informed decision for their body.  This comment confirmed a couple of earlier interactions I had with her when she came across to me as arrogant, condescending and presumptuous and I, mistakenly, let those interactions slide. I would ask a clarifying question and she looked at me like I was stupid and said, "Yes, we're still talking about your fibroids and uterus. It's all one thing." That was not my question. Her immediate response was telling and again my fault for not stopping and correcting her there. I asked all the questions I could manage to remember while keeping my composure. It came across that I was wasting her time with my questions. At the end of the appointment, still in some shock and not sure how to process or handle things, I said to her, "I'm sorry you think I was 'losing my sh*t' when I asked you a question to clarify." She waved it off and said, "Yea, I get it, it's removing an organ." She never apologized for her choice of words and behavior. She then said, "I don't know what it is but I get a lot of patients who are into the holistic thing and they don't want surgeries or medications." If she was frustrated during this appointment, she had many choices of how to respond without being condescending, sarcastic, cruel and out of touch. She is quick to draw conclusions without having all the information, and is NOT keen to listen to the patient. My impression is that she immediately wants to box people into categories without fully taking in information. I will not return to this practice. The only good thing to come of this was getting to interact with her nurse Jennifer. She was kind, communicative, had a warm personality and when she takes your blood, you don't even feel it. We all know that doctors are under pressure from insurance companies to see X patients per day so they want to spend as little time as possible with each person. We're all under pressure from insurance companies in every way. Still, if you're talking to a woman about possibly removing her uterus, it's a big decision. Her demeanor demonstrated a lack of compassion in more than one instance. And what's really disappointing is that she had so many choices of how to speak with me...none had to include cursing or being condescending. read more

I am so angry reading these false statements about Dr. Varkey and her staff. She literally saved me from an unnecessary hysterectomy, that another Dr was going to do, for no reason at all. Not only is she the kindest and most caring Doctor, but by far the most current and trained out there. I gained a lot of weight during menopause, and not once has she judged me or made me feel ashamed. Instead she made me feel accepted and cared for. Her staff has always been wonderful and caring. As far as the annual payment, a great deal of medical professionals are charging this since Covid. It has cost thousands for Doctors, in private offices to pay for the necessary supplies to keep us safe. Lastly, statements made that she uses profanities, is an absolute lie. She is beyond professional and has never used such language. This is a ridiculous attempt by someone wanting to defame her character. This is absolutely wrong and unprofessional of this person. If you truly want the best OB around, this is her. I drive over an hour and half, every year to see her. I will always support her and her staff. read more

It has been almost 5 years or so since I've established my care with Dr. Varkey. My experiences with her and Stephanie have been always top notch. Dr. Varkey has a great bedside manner and makes sure my questions are answered in a way I understand. When she was helping me get on a pill, she did a thorough research to be updated with most recent research studies and followed up with detailed questions to make sure it works with my body and health. Sometimes life happens and I don't get to give enough heads up on refills or questions but she has always been responsive on the portal to help me out in any way she can. With her, I already feel safe and comfortable to discuss pregnancy and anything related to women's health. I also wanted to point out how long Stephanie has been with Dr. Varkey and that says so much! Stephanie has always been so kind and professional - it's really not easy to find someone like her especially at the front desk of a medical office. They did start an annual fee of $250, which I gladly paid for knowing the insurance system is shit in America lol. I believe that every penny is worth for healthcare coming from people like Dr. Varkey and Stephanie. It might be hard to understand such fee for some people, but this fee gives more time and space for them to provide personalized, attentive care towards patients that the insurance system prevents them from doing so. Doctors are human too - as a patient, I would recommend going to appointments with an open mind and patience to let Dr. Varkey grasp the way you want to hear and understand medical terms and knowledge. Also...We live in LA where many people look for holistic approach which is awesome, but it's also important that people do some research in advance to realize that doctors didn't go to medical schools to highly recommend supplements over medications. Unfortunately, I have to update this review with more bad news. After the whole debacle with the cancellation of my hysteroscopy, I reached out to Dr. Varkey to change the medication I was currently taking because I was only supposed to be on it temporarily. Needless to say, her office manager said she read my review and that Dr. Varkey could not give me anymore consultation until I took it down. If I did not take the review down, they would have to "discharge me from their care." While I have no issues with this whatsoever, It makes me sad as a healthcare worker that patient care has come to this; specifically after COVID where myself and other healthcare workers put our lives on the line for our patients. One of the medical code of ethics is while caring for a patient, regard responsibility to the patient as paramount. This is obviously not the case in this situation. Years ago I was a patient of Dr. Varkeys - I had had multiple traumatizing experiences with bad gynos (I had a gyno tell me she had no idea what was going on with something (maybe it was cancer?!) that turned out to be a relatively common issue (definitely not cancer), etc) and decided to pay way more than I could afford for health insurance in order to get some decent care. Dr. Varkey was helpful and kind, minus a weird remark about my insurance. A couple of months later, I call to make an appointment, and am told that there is suddenly an administrative fee (which I was notified about I guess through their patient portal - which is not connected to my email), and I have to pay an additional "administrative" fee to make an appointment. I'm completely honest and tell them I have no way of paying the additional fee - which is only $60 but at the time thats a ton of money for me - and the person I'm on the phone with says "well I'm so sorry but we can't help you then" and hangs up. So my care was completely cut off, after I'd been paying for expensive insurance just to go there in the first place. Skip to now - its been years since I've been there, and I just got an email saying I need to PAY NOW a $250 administrative fee - for a doctor I don't even go to. Basically, if you are a rich woman you are wanted there. If you struggle at all (or care about people who are struggling), don't go there. Visited Dr. Varkey complaining of severe pelvic and abdominal pain, asked if it could be endometriosis. She was very dismissive and said I probably just had bad PMS and gave me a prescription for strong ibuprofin. Did an ultrasound and told me definitively I did NOT have endo. Six years and thousands of dollars spent on GI doctor bills later (I now have IBS as a result of my endo), I have been diagnosed with endometriosis and am practically infertile as a result. If she had taken me more seriously six years ago, I could have avoided a lot of pain and suffering. read more

After reading so many positive reviews, I truly had hope to spark a connection with this doctor or let's just say trust for one. She caused me an incredible amount of pain and bleeding during a normal well woman visit. She refused to prescribe me a basic medication which I needed to treat a small issue! I did a decent amount of research before selecting an OBGYN last year and landed with Dr. Varkey. I went in 2-3 times in 2021 and always had a good experience with her and her staff. I was grateful to have found an OBGYN that I could trust and was warm and knowledgeable. Fast forward to an e-mail I received earlier this month notifying all patients of a $250/year fee for her services, which will NOT be covered by insurance. The note said that this was due to sanitary measures the staff took during the pandemic, and overall inflation. It's truly unfortunate that an office whose focus is women's health (which is a heavily debated topic in this country - access, rights, etc) is charging a fee that a lot of women cannot afford. This is a classist policy, especially when some women only visit 1x/year and would be required to pay this fee. Additionally, health equity has been a major issue for women of color in this country, and with practices like this it's only bound to exacerbate issues. Let's all hope that this does not become the norm moving forward. read more

I've been coming to Dr. Varkey's office for several years now. I appreciated her intelligence & genuine care for her patients. Recently I've seen Chelsea (physician's assistant) & she's amazing too! She always makes you feel at ease. BUT! The actual reason I was inspired to write this review is bc of Stephanie in the front office. She makes the whole operation run smooth as buttahhh! She is so on top of her ish! Like, last night, something came up w work so I had to reschedule my appt coming up in a few days. I left a voicemail & set a reminder for myself to follow up in the morning. No reminder needed- Stephanie promptly called me in the morning & we moved my appt, easy peasy. I feel like she cares just as much as the medical staff & she deserves an award or like a basket of cookies or something :D Oh...last thing I just remembered. Even though her office is a 2-3 hour drive from my house, the incredible treatment and care I have received from Dr. Varkey is worth every minute in traffic! Dr. Varkey started offering a new procedure in her office that I was interested in trying called Fractionated CO2 Resurfacing Laser treatment. I've always struggled with deep acne scars on my face, and have tried numerous peels and micro needling in the past, but nothing really seemed to help. This treatment has actually made a difference! I finally found something that worked! The pictures attached are pre-treatment on the left, and post-treatment series on the right. I still have to wait three more months to see the final results after my last treatment, but I can already see how much more shallow my scars are. Nothing else I've tried has ever been this effective. I was really nervous to try this procedure, but Dr. Varkey and her PA Caroline were very patient and kind, and gave thorough explanation of the procedure beforehand, and answered all my questions. And now I'm so glad I decided to do it, and am very happy with the whole experience. The facility is clean, and staff is knowledgeable and compassionate. The PA Caroline did most of my treatments, and each time she made me feel very taken care of. I never felt rushed or like just another number on the to do list. She took breaks when I needed to, and clarified all treatment modifications throughout the procedure as well. She was an excellent communicator, and always made sure I was as comfortable as possible. I had a great experience, and would definitely recommend this facility if you're looking into this treatment to lessen acne scaring or wrinkles. I'm so very happy I did it! I also would recommend the CBD lotions they offer for post-treatment. They are on the expensive side, but so worth it, I promise! I didn't use it after one of my treatments, and the healing process took a lot longer than the times I did use the CBD lotion package. They feel heavy on the face, but you need an extreme moisturizer for recovery period, and those lotions really do the trick, and help lessen the redness and swelling at the same time. read more

After having made a tentative-Monday appointment on the Friday before (pending Dr. Varkey's verification of insurance coverage and cost which occurred the day of the appointment), my 18-year old daughter had to cancel that morning after finding out that even with coverage, the cost of the office visit was going to be too high. Given that she didn't have the opportunity to cancel within 24 hours of the "appointment" since it was made the Friday before, and even though the appointment was made contingent on the cost of the office visit, she was nonetheless charged a $50 fee. She stated as much on the phone and asked them to reconsider, but was told she still had to pay the $50. In my opinion, this is a business model wholly lacking in moral integrity, that took advantage of a girl who couldn't afford the appointment in the first place, and then charged her a steep cancellation fee despite the circumstances that merited waiving that fee. read more

This doctor is ridiculous, I saw her 10 years ago for a problem. When I went to see her I was in a very bad pain crying. It was the worse situation of my life. She told me she will have to clean with a small procedure. I was so desperate i agreed to it. When She put me on the bed for a procedure with my legs open she got so excited to see my problem she called students in the middle of the procedure to show them without my consent .they were admiring my problem when I was crying from the pain very uncomfortable. she made me very uncomfortable and insecure about it as they were almost laughing . She cleaned gave me medication sent me home. Three days later it got worse. I had to go see another doctor who took cate of it with completely different medication. And it took a month because she made it worse instead of curing it. She didn't know what she was doing. I had insurance otherwise I would never pay her since she never took care of the problem. Unfortunately she got paid through my insurance. Few Years later she starts sending me a bill for $150 I don't even know what it's for so I told her I will not pay that since it's been years and I don't even have that insurance and she never took care of the problem instead I was a show for her. And I had to go through hell because of her wrong treatments. She didn't give a damn about what I said her office manager talked like she doesn't cate about anything I said. . They couldn't even explain what it's for giving me the run around. Now this doctor has been sending me a bill for $150 for 10 years. She already spend more than $150 in papers for a bill for $150. Today was my first visit as a new patient. I want to start off by saying how amazing Stephanie at the front desk is. Before I even came to my first visit she helped me obtain my medical records from my previous OBGYN and let me tell you... it was NOT an easy task! She faxed the documents right away and even followed up with them several times until she got them, all the while keeping me updated. Dr Varkey is lucky to have her!!! OFFICE: Dr. Varkey's office is very clean and nice. I read in a lot of the reviews how people said parking is expensive, but when I went around 1:15PM on a Monday, I had no issues finding free 2HR street parking right in front of the building. Maybe I got lucky! DR VARKEY: Dr. Varkey is so intelligent. She really took her time with me explaining everything and making sure I understood, that is rare! She was genuine and seemed to really care. WAIT TIME: I got to the office at 1:15pm, with a scheduled appt at 1:30. I wasn't seen until 2:15 unfortunately but I think it just took longer because it was a busy Monday and I was a new patient. I didn't mind. Overall, I give Dr. Varkey and her office 5/5 stars!
