Was craving bubble tea for the drive back to NJ, and noticed that there were a lot of places to choose from in the area. I chose Tea Do because it had the most reviews and good ratings. Ordered two standard bubble teas with grass jelly added, and my wife and I thought that it was good, but the tea flavor was really strong. I guess that shouldn't be a complaint, because you would be getting your money's worth, but the stronger the tea, the less refreshing the drink gets. The two teas were sans sugar, so the extra bitterness was even more pronounced. Don't get me wrong, the drinks were good - the boba and grass jelly were decent. It's definitely a popular place on a Saturday night. Couldn't believe that people wouldn't rather go to a bar to have some real drinks. It was still early, so maybe they were having some bites to eat. They serve shu mai, edamame, and onigiri here. There aren't too many tables and the space is small. It's amazing how fast the workers are getting the drinks out! They we quick, efficient, and friendly. Next time, I'll be adventurous and try a non tea drink! read more

I've come here a few times and this is my official fav place in Chinatown for bubble tea. It has more of a clean tea taste compared to Kung Fu or Vivi. I like the jasmine milk tea. The first time I visited Tea Do was back in November of 2012. I remember trying out the Tropical twister, I was like WHOA! I fell hard for Hulk, so hard that I order Hulk continuously for a month. Sunset, First Love, and the Grasshopper were ok, didn't impress me. Didn't ever order them again, maybe I will in the future to refresh my memory of their tastes. When Tea Do introduce Onigiri for the first time, I was WOW by their looks, sushi in another form. I got the spam, shrimp tempura, and Kani. Fell instantly with love, when ever I get pocket money, I would rush to Tea Do just for their rice balls, insane right lol. Last night, after hubby pick up my Hulk and Twister, he told me Tea Do sell the light bulb drinks I was looking for. I immediately jump out the car and ask the staffs about it. Great place to stop by for an afternoon pick-me-up or an after-dinner treat. It's a small place and can get pretty packed, but they get your orders in fairly quickly. They have options for everyone: milk tea, regular teas, smoothies, hot, cold, various sugar levels, and a plethora of extra toppings. You really can come in everyday and basically never get the same thing twice. When I visited, I saw that they had a few winter specials. Got the Tiger Milk Tea (which is just brown sugar milk tea). Wasn't bad; you could actually taste the tea in it (In case you didn't know, real brown sugar milk tea is not supposed to have tea in it despite having the word "tea" in the name.) which for the record I didn't mind at all. On a recent day trip we got to stop into this tea shop. My friends had never experienced bubble tea before and this was a great opportunity. I tried the black tea with passion fruit and it was delicious. The tapioca bubbles are perfectly cooked, chewy but not mushy. My friend tried the mango popping bubbles and she loved how sweet and light and refreshing the drink was. This was quite a Hopping place when we were there, and as individuals in our late thirties we were surprisingly the oldest people in the room. I was really craving bubble tea after visiting Reading Terminal and walking around Philly's Chinatown. As someone who hasn't been here in over 5 years, I was pretty overwhelmed by all the options. However, this establishment seemed comparable to Yaya's in NYC as they both serve unique drinks and rice balls. The menu was overwhelming and took a while to narrow down what I wanted. I eventually asked the cashier for her recommendation on the holiday drinks in a light bulb shaped cup. These are relatively common in NYC but I have never seen one this big before. I eventually got the Beast (completely forgot what flavor it was) with lychee jelly. It took a while for it to come out but the store was super busy. Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the taste and size of the drink. It's in a super convenient location (5 min from Reading Terminal) and right next to Ting Wong, a great lunch spot. Always good drinks, I think I've had everything on the menu minus the food. My fav are the specialty drinks: the hulk, grasshopper and tropical twister are a must try! One drink I'm very fond of is the papaya smoothie its probabaly not all fresh fruit but the drink is sooooo good! I've been to the other locations esp the one in Newark but this is my go to place after dim sum or after lunch/dinner in Chinatown. It's a bit crowded on weekends and the line can go out the door but they work fast to get you your drink/food. Seating inside is a bit weird but they do the best they can for the space they have. Inside, if u can grab a seat and a game, you can play Jenga or uno. The games are a bit beat up since the place opened a while a ago. One thing I can say is the restroom is a bit messy and they could fix the lock to make it look more "safe to go" Other wise I will always come back for my teado fix here or if I'm around the area. I quite enjoy bubble tea as a frequent indulgence, and Tea-Do is one of my favorite grab-and-go spots in Philly, it is not your average bubble tea. Also, I'm sure it's not off-the-radar gem since it's always packed (good sign!) So what's Bubble Tea anyway? Mainly it's a tea based drink, either milk tea & tapioca, or fruit tea & jelly. Milk tea is made usually made with freshly brewed tea and milk: Coconut milk, taro milk, or Thai milk and slightly sweet, black, chewy pearls sinked to the bottom. Fruit tea on the other hand, is made with fresh fruits or flavored syrup and jellies made out of coconut water, not gelatin. Since Tea-Do offers wide selection of bubble tea; few of my favorites are the Tropical Twister (mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and lychee jelly), First Love (red guava, passion fruit, and aloe jelly with kiwi bubble) and the traditional Thai Milk Tea with boba pearls. Quick notes: - Boba balls are fun and strange, however, some people don't like the consistency or texture of it, so be aware. I guarantee you, you'll be surprised. Just don't spit them out, try to enjoy them and you won't be disappointed. (if you were adventurous!). - Jellies are usually soft and neutral in taste and/or crunchy, and Tea-Do carries various flavors of jellies: coconut, lychee, mango, or aloe jellies. as an alternative to tapioca for bubble tea. Although their other drinks can be decent, most of them are lacking in tea. If I'm around Chinatown, I would usually drop by and get a cup of black milk tea. I thought the regular one is too sweet, so I usually get it with half sugar. During the summer, I would get the cold black milk tea with bubbles or pudding. During winter, I would get hot black milk tea with bubbles. Bubbles get pretty soft in the warm drink, and I'd get a spoon to eat those soft and chewy bubbles. Their bubbles are usually pretty chewy and slightly sweet. Not all bubble tea shops can make their bubbles as delicious. I would know because I used to work in a bubble tea shop in college! My friends have tried several of their other tea flavors and they usually like it. Unfortunately, I never tried other flavors because, well, I love my black milk tea with half sugar!! I wouldn't expect any service from this place. It can also get very crowded at times because it seems to be a hangout spot for high school and college kids. If you managed to get a seat, though, you can relax and play jenga with friends. It's fun! Oh yea, they have a couple sets of jenga laying around for customers to play with. read more

YUM YUM YUMMMM!!! My favorite bubble tea place of all time (and I'm a huge boba fanatic, so that's saying something). Here are some of my favorite things... 1) Every drink on the menu is good. You can't really go wrong with anything that you get. The specialty drinks are so unique and all so delicious too. 2) They serve small food dishes as well... Including Takoyaki and Onigiri - my faves! And probably one of the only places you can find Takoyaki in Philly Chinatown. 3) They have such a wide assortment of toppings that even boba-lovers will venture out and try a new topping for their drink. I love the MANGO STAR JELLIES!!!!! A must try! 4) Free wifi and Jenga! Keeps the customers happy and entertained :) 5) You can pay with LevelUp. 6) Open late nights! 7) Clean bathrooms! I am on the fence between two or three stars. They seem to have a lot of cool stuff, but there are some concerns. The only drinks they make themselves is the smoothies (I asked). So I was about to get the red guava with strawberry popping bubbles because for reason I assumed they were blending guava fruit, but it's just manufactured juice with popping bubbles. Therefore, the three of us got smoothies - which was annoying in its own way. I got the papaya smoothie with lychee jelly. The smoothie itself was good, but the lychee jelly was way too much. I think it would be better if they mixed it a little better. What they did was put a dollop of jelly int the cup, and pour the smoothie (which is very thick and viscous) on top. So what ends up happening is you sip, the lychee is so overpowering it takes away from the papaya. But once I had enough, I was able to stir it up a bit and it was better. Perhaps using lychee-flavored bubbles would have been better instead of just jelly. My b/f got the coconut smoothie with coconut jelly. The coconut smoothie itself was very week. It just tasted like coconut water blended with ice. I'm not saying that's what they did, I'm only illustrating the (lack of) intensity of the flavor. To make his matters worse, the jelly was pineapple, not coconut. As with my situation, the pineapple was also overpowering so all you were able to taste from his was pineapple syrup with a tinge of coconut. Our friend got the green apple smoothie with lychee jelly. Like my case, the smoothie itself was a solid green apple flavor, but again, the lychee jelly took away from it. In terms of the drinks we had, I am not that thrilled and I don't think I would go back. The only thing I liked about this place was the popping bubbles - which they don't use in the smoothies, which is what I would be ordering in the first place. I really don't feel the need to pay $4 for canned guava juice with some popping jellies. Would I go back? Perhaps... I may just get a smoothie and ask for popping bubbles in place of the jellies, depending if the surcharge would burn a hole in my bank account. read more

I tried Tea Do for the first time almost two years ago, and I thought it was better back then... Pretty disappointed. My friend moved to Philadelphia and we wanted boba in Chinatown. She recommended Kung Fu but they recently opened up one in Northern VA where I'm from, so I chose Tea Do since I don't have it back home. The girl at the front wasn't very happy or friendly, so that was a bummer. The drink I got was the green tea milk tea, in medium which was $3, and my bf got the "Vietnamese Iced coffee" with boba. My drink seemed very powdery, which was evident in the strange aftertaste. It left my mouth feeling dry for some reason. Not very pleasant. My bf's drink was sort of offensive since I am Vietnamese, and it DEFINITELY was not how we make iced coffee. It was very bitter, and parts of it still lukewarm... I gave this place a try after having not been here for almost a year. I have mainly been going to Kungfu Tea ever since it opened. However, Kungfu tea does not have the extensive selection so I decided come here after a while to see if anything has changed. What a big mistake! It seems like nothing has changed since my last review. The wait time to place and receive my order was long because despite there being 20 people in the establishment, only 2 people were manning the counter. I even saw the girl making the drinks mess up an order and had to remake the drink for someone else. And worst of all, I FOUND METAL IN MY DRINK!! It looked like a piece fallen off of those stainless steel scrubbers used to clean pots and pans. I promptly got a refund. They didn't even offer to comp the drink for such a mistake like that. It could have cut my throat open. Needless to say, I am not coming back to this establishment EVER again. Tea Do really needs to stop hiring careless teenagers. I was in Philly for a weekend trip and heard good things and finally decided to try it but NO ONE in my group enjoyed it, and I'm a bubble tea addict. Everyone ended up tossing it and we ended up getting sharetea instead, which was so much better. However, giving another star as they did not mess up our relatively large order via Grubhub.
