Kamilah of Teas with Meaning is extremely knowledgeable and personable. I enjoyed the blended tea workshop and my tea was delicious.

My friend called ahead to reserve a table, and just a heads up--they do have a cancellation fee, so be sure your group is committed before booking. The space is small, cozy, and beautifully decorated, making it feel really homey. They have a great selection of teas, and with the afternoon tea set you get to choose three sandwich flavors. I picked the smoked salmon, chicken curry, and kaya toast, and they were all delicious. I especially loved that they incorporated Malaysian-inspired flavors into a traditional afternoon tea experience. For my tea, I chose the Earl Grey Lavender, which was fragrant and delicious. I also added the Malaysian pulled tea for an extra $7. It was a fun experience and a generous serving since you also get a full pot of tea. Overall, everything was delicious, the atmosphere was adorable, and the service was great. I'd definitely recommend Malaya Tea Room if you're looking for a cozy afternoon tea spot with a unique Malaysian twist for a special occasion or a catch-up with friends!

The set up is very tight - we got the window table and people had to scootch into the corner, with no way out unless everyone left. The staff were nice to wait for all of our attendees prior to starting, and then they promptly took our tea orders. We had already put in our food order when we made the reservation, so they brought out the tiered plates after the tea was served. - FOOD/DRINK - I enjoyed my White Tea, but unfortunately, I don't remember what it was called. Each pair got a tower, so since we had 10 people, we got 5 towers. My favorites from our selection: - Kaya Sandwich - Umami meatfloss with basil house spread Sandwich - Curry Chicken Sandwich - Scone The desserts were a bit lackluster in my opinion. I was really looking forward to the pandan cake, but it didn't taste a lot like pandan. - OVERALL - A cute spot for afternoon tea, or if you're celebrating something! Just would recommend a smaller party for comfort!

They have an extensive menu of tea, I decided to get the black mango tea, which is indicated as high caffeine. They told me to keep it to less than 1 min steeping or else it gets oversteeped. They were prompt with coming out with my tea leaves and teapot, and gave me a towel to put your teapot on in case of spills It was bitter, but definitely has the fruity notes I was seeking. I was able to make several potfuls of tea which still had some flavor in them, so the leaves seemed to do well with re-steeping. They provided me with a kettle so I could continually reboil the water, so I felt it was decent value (since total it cost only slightly more than the average boba costs nowadays). I'm thinking I'd like to get the lychee or hojicha next time. The worker didn't mention to me if they offer milk, which I wish they did. But they do sell snacks. The bathroom is clean. They have free wifi but the day I was there, unfortunately they were having issues with the wifi. They have a 2 hour time limit on weekends, but no limit on weekdays. I appreciate that they have outdoor seating, for those who are airborne illness conscious, and also so you can enjoy nature and sunshine while having your tea. A lovely spot overall, right on San Pablo Ave so you can take the 72 bus lines to reach it.

The staff member was super helpful and friendly in recommending us different teas. We ended up picking the Yunnan Gold and Moonlight White - a black tea and a white tea. The Yunnan Gold had more of a bold flavor and smelled and tasted wonderful. The Moonlight White was much lighter but still very nice and pleasant. Each table has its own kettle so we got to brew the tea ourselves. I know tea always comes with brewing instructions but I never really paid attention to those. However, this experience made me realize the importance of brewing tea as instructed to fully enjoy the flavors and notes each tea offers. Overall, my friend and I had a great experience. We were able to try new teas and catch up in a relaxing atmosphere.

There's a million boba tea shops all over California. The Bay Area is oversaturated with the next…read morebig hype. This small shop is not hyped up, they don't have long lines, there's no influx of influencers trying to take advantage of getting free drinks in exchange for advertisement. Just pure locals, IYKYK. See I'm not big on overly sweet milk tea that gets washed out from the milk and has minimal tea. I love the strong tea flavors with the hint of milk just to complement the tea. I love ordering their Tieguanyin Milk Tea. It's probably one of my favorites because of the floral hints. Even as a milk tea, you can still taste the tea itself while adding a hint of sweetness. As a hole in the wall in Chinatown, this is literally one of the good ones.

OVERALL: This place is gnarly. I think it's receiving rave reviews because of its uniqueness in and…read morevariety of offerings. Price point wise, it's slightly cheaper than other tea shops (slightly!). I gave it 2 stars because: 1) you don't come across "healthy" "medicinal" as well as massive choices very often at boba shops and the drinks ordered didn't give me the runs and 2) the location. DRINKS: I ordered 2 of the "blended" tea drinks (aka with goji berries, longan, etc aka replenishing, tonic, etc). They tasted like nothing. Very dilute. The one with ginger...all you tasted was the ginger. The boba was disgusting... rock hard with ZERO sugar or honey coating and ZERO chew. The clear boba is actually crystal boba aka store bought aka the usual crunchy texture you get at any other boba shops that offers this topping. SERVICE: I think due to ordering unusual drinks aka drinks that are obviously not very frequently/regularly ordered, they took FOREVER. I was third in line. People ordering after me were already receiving their drinks. I was there at 1:14pm and finally left at 1:58pm (if this tells you anything). VIBEZ: Indoor seating provided. Very intimate and a tight squeeze. Located in the Oakland Chinatown near the vast plaza comprising of Bank of America, the Oakland library, etc. Can park at this plaza or street metered parking. Free street parking on Sundays. Would I come back? Heck no.
