While I admit I haven't been out and about lately enough to frequent them, I feel that the service has gotten more loose and casual - not in a good way. For example today, I walked in and stood in front of the ordering area only to receive no acknowledgement from seemingly 3-4 staff members who didn't seem like they were actively helping anyone. The cafe wasn't empty but it wasn't that busy either to me. It just felt like the staff were having fun by themselves or maybe they were with their friends. Which is fine by me, but after they help customers. Oh, also I asked for one of drinks for dining in and my other drink hot. I received them in a to-go cup and iced. Still both flavorful, but just shows that the staff's attention may appear to be elsewhere. read more

Just had a chill 5 star experience at Tea on Piedmont. They've done a great job at creating a relaxing space conducive to enjoying a cup of tea and a dessert. It's light and spacious with a minimalist Zen vibe. I immediately recognized this was a true tea place, not just a boba shop. It's clearly for people who appreciate high quality tea. I went in only knowing I wanted a boba tea after seeing someone inside enjoying one. The person at the counter was friendly and patient. He asked me a few questions and suggested the hojicha boba, and my tea was ready even before I found a place to sit! It was fantastic! The hojicha flavor was subtle but bright. The boba was fresh, mild in flavor, and had the perfect chew with the right amount of softness. There's also a nicely curated assortment of teas, tea accessories, and books about tea to choose from. Elegant tea in Oakland! Tea of Piedmont's tea selection is great. It is clear that the tea is high quality. They all have a very dynamic flavor. The flavors are strong but not overpowering. The drinks are not incredibly sweet so it lets the earthy flavors of the teas shine. The boba was a bit hard but it wasn't much of a bother. The drinks were very pleasant! They definitely are a bit pricey (averaging around $7+). I don't believe you can adjust the size so this price is a bit steep although the quality is very good. The cafe itself is very cute. It is pretty minimalist but has a lot of seating. This seating isn't necessarily the most comfortable with wooden benches and low tables, but it fits the vibes well. The barista was super sweet and approachable. She finished the drinks super quick too. One of my favs. Small menu compared to most. Paid lot or paid street parking so it's def not the easiest to get in or out of but their drinks are tasty, without being too sweet. Unique enough that it keeps me coming back, friendly staff, and my fav sitting nook around. They've got seating n music going but the seating is perfect for ppl watching. I came here for a little tea pick-me-up after lunch at nearby Kitava. I was going to order the strawberry fruit tea, but they were out of strawberry, so I opted for mango fruit tea instead, as it was the only other fruit tea option. I got mine with jasmine tea and requested less ice and sugar and added boba pearls to my drink. I sat down with my friend and waited for my drink order to be called, but I never heard my name, so eventually I got up to check and saw my mango tea sitting on the counter. The cup had a plastic lid, so when I inserted the straw, tea spilled out and got everywhere. Once I tried the drink, I wasn't that impressed. It tasted like pasteurized mango puree - definitely not fresh mango. The boba pearls were very firm and seemed undercooked. I wouldn't get it again. read more

The menu isn't as extensive as other tea shops, but each of the offerings are of the highest quality. My wife will bounce around and get different drinks each visit (her current fav is the barley tea latte with oat milk), I always choose the Matcha Latte with whole milk and house made strawberry puree. The matcha is ceremonial grade; it takes a little more time to make than the other drinks, but very much worth the effort. Street parking can be difficult, but there is a paid lot across the street (near the CVS). read more

This spot caught my eye on Yelp because of the aesthetics! We stopped in for post-dinner caffeine. I was planning on getting the oolong macadamia but once I tried a sample, I wasn't too big of a fan. It tasted way too light and not enough of the roasted oolong flavor. But after having their hojicha latte, I think that's just the style here! Even the hojicha, which typically has a very strong roasted flavor, tasted very light in this drink. But overall it was a smooth and creamy drink. I think you just need to know what you're getting coming here! I did try my friend's strawberry fizzy tea though and that was very refreshing! I appreciated that they had a kids menu too. Tea On Piedmont is such a cute place! Decided to give this place a try since I was in the area and have been to nearby spots already. And it was a good choice! I was able to get in and out quickly but this place was giving coffee-shop-support-local vibes. They were selling teas, books on teas, tea bundles, souvenirs like pins/stickers, and some pastries. I got the jasmine strawberry fruit tea and it was refreshing. :) I couldn't taste the jasmine too much but it definitely hit the spot. My friend tried the iced joco latte and he had no idea what to expect-- but he liked it after a few sips. I don't go to the East Bay a lot, but when I do, I'll probably come here whenever I'm craving boba. I tried a few of their specialty drinks and just a regular black milk tea with boba. I get less sweet for all my drinks too, so it may differ for some people. However, the tea is great. It's brewed really well that it's a strong enough tea taste with little astringency. The milk doesn't overpower the tea either, even with more delicate teas such as jasmine. I find myself coming back to here whenever I'm in the East Bay. read more

I appreciated that the chai had an oat milk base (rather than paying extra for milk substitute) and it was nicely spiced. The assam tea was also good and strong, and it kept me awake as I had hoped! Tried the barley latte with oat milk which sounded delicious but mine was really bitter and lingered on my tongue after. My friend got the same but with whole milk and the color and taste of hers was much lighter & milkier. One of the baristas attributed the difference to using oat milk vs. whole milk but it was such a stark color and taste difference from my friend's that I think it was likely due to inconsistent preparation. I love barley tea and drink it at home but it usually doesn't leave a bitter aftertaste unless it's oversteeped. However, the cashier I ordered from was so kind and adjusted it with more milk / sweetener until it tasted more balanced (and I'm someone who usually likes things not too sweet). At that point, it looked and tasted more similar to my friend's. My husband ordered their hojicha tea and said his also tasted bitter / oversteeped, while another friend ordered a hojicha latte and liked it. It seems like they could work on more consistent brewing methods in their operations since it was hit or miss. The matcha here is SO good and reasonably priced! I generally like my matcha strong, unsweetened, and with soy or oat milk, depending on availability. They don't charge for using alternative milks (they only charge for oat milk I think). And they have an option to add an extra shot of matcha to make your drink stronger for $1. Most other places charge $1 for using milk alternative so I'd rather pay the extra $1 here for a stronger matcha instead. I can't believe how good this place is. The pick up counter is oddly placed and they would benefit from an accessible screen that lists when drinks are ready as their drinks don't come with order numbers on them. The service was nondescript and after ordering an unsweetened high mountain oolong, I was given a four minute estimate but it took 15 in an uncrowded space. The drink was good but not worth the wait, so I'd recommend they switch to having a couple daily iced teas already made (one herbal, one green/black). Dropped by on a Friday a bit before noon, and I realized it's a popular spot for cafe-goers to come and do work, chit-chat, or grab something with their colleagues. I was initially split between trying their matcha or their hojicha, but I figured I'd start with a popular one in the reviews. Iced Matcha Latte was a solid 4/5. Not as matcha-y as I'd like, but I think the sweetness was perfect - Not too sweet after mixed, so I could at least still taste the matcha. The Chai, which my friend ordered hot, was surprisingly good. It was spiced (most importantly part, imo) and sweet, and although I gravitate towards my ice cold beverages, I'd stop by on a cold day, grab a hot chai, and sit and do some work for a bit!
