From concept to implementation, this place is everything a tree hugging hippie like me adores. If you're unfamiliar with the store concept, please don't hesitate to ask a salesperson for the whole story. The gist is that all the products are handmade, using fair trade systems, in countries where jobs are in need. With the hippie stuff outta the way, I'll tell you that the products themselves are well worth a look!! They are unique pieces that all have a life of their own. A personal fave is the purses made from candy wrappers. It has a boutique vibe and the layout is designed to showcase all the various works. Staff is knowledgeable about the creation of the pieces and who makes them. In some cases they can tell you the exact person that made an item. The prices are higher, but still reasonable. Considering that they're fair trade priced, I don't mind paying a little more for a handmade item. I love to support charities and micro business, so this is win/win for me! Totally dig a place where I can find a necklace that I get complimented on each and every time I wear it and know that my money to purchase it went to good use. This location is all about fair trade. Everyone working here are volunteers and everything seems to made with love and respect. I get such a cozy feeling when browsing around this spot. "Fairly traded handcrafts from around the world." This shop sticks to this mantra--and a job well done I must say. Their merchandise was beautiful. And beautifully displayed which made shopping there a pleasure. I loved their jewelry--and the price tags attached. The pieces were distinctive and very cool. Bright colors and interesting bead combinations. I wish I could have bought it all. Their blue and white ceramic pieces were also a treat to view. They had quite a bit of house wares as well as decorative home goods like mirrors and candles. It seemed like a fantastic place to find your best friend a wedding gift (if you were to stray from her registry). I've been to another Ten Thousand Villages, in Raleigh, NC, but didn't realize that it has multiple locations till I chanced upon this one after visiting the Morse Museum (which BTW is totally a MUST-SEE.) If you like ethnic handicrafts, unique accessories and home goods, if you like shopping at World Market, Pier One, or Art Festivals, this place is totally for you!! Now, you may find the prices a bit higher, that's because Ten Thousand Villages is a fair trade retailer. They pay good wages to the artisans who make the merchandise in different corners of the world. Some of the materials used are recycled, like using dried orange peels to make a doll figurine, cloth from old swim suits to make colorful hair bands, old magazines to make paper boxes... They are hand made, so everything is unique, one of its kind. Sometimes there are description about the material and the artisans who make the products.There are also fair trade coffee and chocolate. This was the first Ten Thousand Villages store location that I ever visited, and I absolutely loved it! Nestled in Winter Park, this company offers wonderfully-hand made and unique gifts, jewelry, home decor, art, sculpture, textiles, accessories, and even dishware, representing diverse cultures (Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East). Ten Thousand Villages is also considered one of the largest fair trade organizations, and their mission is to improve the livelihood of the disadvantaged artisans. Just note that any purchases go towards helping to pay for food, education, healthcare, and housing for these artisans!!! I am obsessed with their Chilean 'Good Luck Pig,' made out of terra cotta - it has only 3 legs and is considered as a token of love and good fortune :D I also purchased several wool vicunas, handmade in Peru, for my collection. All the items are of great quality, and I love that any item you purchase, it is slightly different and unique, as they are all handcrafted. This place located on Park Ave in Winter Park is an adorable little gem of good heartedness. Filled with handicrafts from around the world, Ten Thousand Villages offers fair trade gifts and treasures at reasonable prices. Not only are the artisans being paid a living wage, but they haven't jacked up the consumer prices to do so. The store is small, but I could easily spend hours checking out all the cool merchandise. My latest purchase, a cookbook with recipes from around the world, and some other things for my mom's birthday, which I can't disclose - because she has a YELP. Oh, and they have a drum circle the last Friday of every month. I'll be checking that out :) read more

Among the posh, upscale shops of Winter Park sits a store that doesn't seem like it fits in, but it actually does surprisingly well...and it's called Ten Thousand Villages. This small shop tucked away at the end of the Park Avenue strip is known for it's handcrafted fair trade gifts and treasures that are sold at very affordable prices. It's one of the few places on Park Ave where I don't feel like I'm paying way too much and the merchandise is very unique and one of a kind in regards to other shops carrying the same merchandise. The list of items you can find in this small store is endless. They have everything from purses and bags to teas and coffee, little statues and trinkets, books and so much more. This is the perfect place to buy gifts for any occasion, especially for people who you often have a difficult time finding a gift for. What's even better is that the merchandise stands out and doesn't look cheaply made. Plus, there is always new stuff coming in.
