I had an unpleasant experience here. I came in looking for Anadama bread which I had bought at their location in Wenham. I didn't see any so I asked the young woman near the bread section. She couldn't speak English and just pointed at the bread and began giggling, as did the other worker next to her. I asked again and asked if there was anybody that spoke English. She called over a guy who apparently didn't speak English either. I asked him and he did the same - pointed at the bread, while the two girls giggled. There was no Anadama bread and apparently no English. This is poor customer service. If you're going to hire workers who can't speak English, they shouldn't be dealing with customers. It's very frustrating trying to communicate with people that can't understand and act disrespectfully to customers. I emailed the business to express my disappointment and frustration with my experience but have heard nothing back which is a further disappointment. Update: After another attempt at contacting them, this time via FACEBOOK, I heard back immediately and was taken seriously and assured it would be dealt with. She explained that those workers are bakers and aren't required to speak fluent English but will still talk with them about what happened. read more

This place used to be good. Not anymore. Prices are insane and they overcharge you for things. Today they charged me $12.89 for two tomatoes!! When I told the cashier, a young kid, they were not heirloom he insisted they were. The manager took ten minutes to refund me, no apology and she walked away to another register. Should have been $3.02. I walked away as she was so rude. I go there only when i am desperate for 1 thing (as was the case tonight). No longer going to pay $4 for a turnover or $6+ for french bread. The produce is also low quality as is the fruit. The barn has atmosphere but at these prices I can get cheaper and fresh food anywhere. Meat is good quality (not great) also very overpriced. I am a fan of local. There's a review down below that talks about the parking lot being filled with people who drive Mercedes and BMWs... this is true. You're also in Newburyport. So that doesn't bother me one bit (I'm driving a 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee BTW!) anyway my only bummer was the lack of some staples. On this trip I had a few staples to grab as well as come for their farm meats. The grass fed ground beef was fantastic- I made burgers with it and literally just seasoned with salt and pepper and they came out superb. I also got chicken breasts and thighs and it was refreshing to see that they weren't these insanely gigantic pieces of meat and seemed to come from standard sized chickens! I was wishing for more deli meats - like any - and some various condiments but was pleased with the friendliness of the staff and the quality of what was there! read more

Like most speciality stores there are going to be some hits and misses. The produce always looks good and is well displayed. They do offer some unique produce. This last trip I picked up some small containers of their bean dip and bacon horseradish dip which were awful and ended up being tossed out after sitting in the fridge for weeks. They just didn't have much flavor. I'll be staying away from the dips for sure in the future. I bought a wonderful loaf of sour dough bread. I also got a peach pie which was fantastic. You could tell they used fresh peaches (at least that is what I concluded from the texture) and the crust was good. It is a little pricey and much more commercial than your typical farm stand but still worth the trip if you are in the area. read more

Guy working at register had a very loose mask on, kept raising his hand and coughing a long gross sounding cough into his hand and I couldn't tell if the mask he was wearing was actually covering him - plus he was touching his face under the mask. He then just continued taking my items and I had to stop him and say hey, can you please use the hand sanitizer that is sitting right there in front of you since you were just COUGHING?? He looked at me like I was nuts. I was so disgusted I almost just walked out of there and felt like leaving all my stuff...but then I knew someone else would have to put the things back AND I'd have to go another store and start over. So, I just hoped for the best and wiped items when home. Also - during this pandemic PLEASE get some kind of line going that is not in the smaller narrow aisle between berries and pastry. How about the wider aisle where the apples and lemons are?? The last few times I've been in line, nobody social distances and people are coming right up to me, bumping into me to pick out berries and then make their way back out of the line area. I KNOW it's small store - but c'mon Tendercrop. Get it together! I won't be back at this point, but get your protocols in order with employees for health and safety of all your shoppers. read more

Tendercrop raises and butchers a lot of their own meat, and it is great quality...and about what you'd pay at Whole Foods...yet it's locally raised. They also grow a lot of veggies which are great quality. I took a trip down there and picked up a whole chicken, some pork butt, grass fed ground beef, pork tenderloin, chicken wings, chorizo, pork chops, and hangar steak. I'm stocked up on meat for awhile! I also got some of their potato salad to try and it is fantastic! Visit here and support a local farm instead of buying the factory farm meat/chicken you get at the grocery store. You won't regret it! read more

Worms in my fruit. Caterpillars in my corn. Mold on the strawberries and blackberries underneath the top layer so I wasn't able to see it. I gave this place another chance after I found some "friends" inhabiting my corn but after today, I am done. If you buy anything from here, be sure to INSPECT it well before taking a bite out of anything. Cut open that nectarine, don't just bite into it because you may just find a cute little worm inside! (We had to toss 60% of the fruits we bought here for this very issue. NO exaggeration, seriously!) Husk the corn before you bother paying for it because there's a good chance you'll have to toss half of what you buy when you find it worm-eaten or full of giant green caterpillars. Yes, I get that it's organic and they don't use pesticides. I shop at many local farm stands and Whole Foods and have NEVER seen a worm in anything. What's the point of buying food when you will have to dispose of over 50% of it? Edit: OK so apparently they are not organic?? Then there is absolutely no excuse to be selling wormy or moldy produce. So what's up Tendercrop? I know you buy veggies at local stores and pay kids to pick off the grocery store stickers.. Why not at least source your "not your own" veggies from a place that can prevent this pest infestation? If you're going to be deceptive, at least do it correctly. I know farmers share crops but this doesn't seem like what they're doing when they send staff to local grocery stores and have them pick off the produce stickers before putting them out. What a shame. Addendum: TC gets two stars for their lovely dried flower, wreath, and fall pumpkin selection. But for anything else, just avoid. read more

If you shop here, make sure you check your receipt at the register. I have been OVERCHARGED here FREQUENTLY! For example I have been charged for a quart instead of the pint I bought by a untrained cashier, other times, the automatic price on the register is higher than what the item is marked. Also, I have seen the back room stockers in Wenham and Newbury wandering the store with masks around their chins! Tendercrop Farm is as good as it gets for organic produce, free range poultry and meat, baked goods, fresh and dry plants and flowers for all seasons, and assorted gift shop foods. I shop at Tendercrop about twice a month to load up on green peppers, scallions, tomatoes, vidalia onions, strawberries, blueberries, apples, chicken drumsticks, maple sausage, lean ground beef... The prices are reasonable, if not dirt cheap compared to big box supermarkets and because everything is either grown on premises or shipped in from other farms, there are no artificial "enhancements" added to the produce to make them shine. And it's an independent farm so every purchase adds dollars to the local economy. Be sure to stop by the rear of the property to say hi to Buffy the Buffalo and whatever the white llama's name is. read more

I am not one to write a negative review, but this is about the health and safety of our community. I went to Tendercrop Farm Store in Newbury today and was disgusted to say the least. The checkout line wrapped around the store and people were 2-3 inches apart. Despite the wearing of masks, this was so irresponsible when we are trying so hard in MA to get this pandemic under control. There is no excuse for this reckless management of the store. There was no responsibility on the workforce to even address this. someone was outside of the store letting people in, but no-one was even looking at spacing. I'll wait for a response before I report this. Second time I have experienced this. Won't go again. read more

Twice now I've had a terrible experience with one of their managers -- the same woman each time. Upon needing assistance, she was very rude and made me I was inconveniencing her. Love this place. I drive up from Swampscott MA to get meats and poultry. Just loaded up today. The prices are about the same as the grocery stores and I know the animals are treated humanely and cared for by good people. I rather hand my hard earned money over to a local business that treats the animals with care, then a grocery store that gets their meat/poultry from huge butchering plants. Even Whole Foods (which is just down the street from me) rates their animal care on a scale within FDA guidelines (which are laughable in a sad way). I like the way TCF labels their produce, dairy, etc as to whether it is their own or not. Makes it easy for me to decide what I will get while I am there. Organic is not as important to me as local because I know to be certified as organic is very, very difficult...and how "organic" is it to ship your organic vegetables/fruits using fossil fuels across the country? Large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, most of it grown there (if not the source is clearly labeled). The beef, chicken, and turkey are their own. My only issue is that they run out of some of my favorite cuts, but there is always an option. Places like this are rare. So if you enjoy fresh, great tasting food, please check them out, and support locally grown food. Oh--and they have real, unprocessed dog bones that your dog will freak over! read more

Absolute delight shopping here. It's like a whole foods meets a local farm doing it right, non corporate style. Everything is local, and the setup of the store is great. The butcher was very pleasant and the prices were pretty decent. Grass fed beef options were great, and the fact that it was super clean always makes me want to come back. They had a variety of chicken marinated ready to go, and it seemed like such a popular item. The cookie selection was scrumptious. I had peanut butter, chocolate chip, and oatmeal raising-not me of course but my friends and I and they were tasty and well baked! I liked the dried flowers and herbs and plants scattered through the store as decoration. Cashiers all seemed to be very young high school aged boys but we're kind and knowledgable. read more

In addition to fresh and healthy-looking fruits and veggies, they have meats and some local dairy and cheeses. The staff is friendly and helpful, as well. I love Tender Crop! I get all my fruits and veggies here. Once I needed sugar, and they don't sell any, but they went in back and got me some from their baking stash and sold it to me on the cheap. That was the day they won my heart! Buffy the Buffalo is cute, and the llamas are awesome. It seems like anything that can be local is local. I got a batch of their own basil last week and it lasted a full 7 days in water. Crazy! What kind of basil stands up for a week? You can also get local milk, tons of fancy-schmancy grocery items, tons of dried herbs, breads (which are fantastic), dips, sodas, I could go on and on. My husband would kill for the blondies. Also, everything is super-cheap. I love it. There is plenty of parking, even when the place is packed. You can pick your own too! They make it so easy to shop local. read more

Alright, the food is absolutely phenomenal. I've been hearing about their good quality meats, meat pies and soups. The prepared food did not disappoint. The soups were all, delicious. My family and I purchased a little bit of pretty much everything, and 4 different soups. The upstairs decor is stunning. Now here's where the three stars come in. What is the deal with the attitude of the employees working downstairs? Let me specify, and I am not sure how to do so without putting people into a category... but, here we go. Specifically there was one polite lady working downstairs. ONE. Every other Caucasian lady working downstairs, all of whom are... older, were rude. When I say rude, I mean rude. Attitudes, nasty, unhelpful, one was even totally clueless. They all had major attitudes except for the one lady who checked us out. Let me re-specify, I didn't have much interaction with anyone behind the meat counter. So, I'm speaking about the two women at the one register in the front, the other lady who was walking around, in a green apron (I think) and the lady who was re-stocking something, and there was yet another. The only polite employee downstairs was the lady we were lucky enough to check out with. She had kind of curly brownish/red hair in a low pony tail and seemed to be younger than the other women. I was floored. The Latino and Hispanic employees upstairs were wonderful. Polite, helpful, sweet. Great vibes. But these... predominantly white haired, women downstairs. It was baffling. My family and I had to bite our tongues the entire time. The clientele was also lacking, lacking in manners and lacking in consciousness. We felt like we were surrounded by solipsistic zombies. It was a truly bizarre atmosphere downstairs between the rude, attitude filled employees and the creepy customers. So, I guess... maybe don't go on a Friday between 12-3pm. Amazing little place on the way to Plum Island Beaches. A great place to stop and get a few things on your way to have a picnic, or I guess loads of people shop there for real for their groceries. They had samples of all their spreads with pretzels today when we stopped by. Oh my god, they were amazing! Especially the one with pesto in it, the rest just tasted a little cheesy, and that is all. Great selection of fruits, but I would go with the fresh fruit, not the cut fruits, our cut fruits were all mealy and gross, but we got half a dozen peaches that were AMAZINGLY GOOD. The potato salad is really good too. Kinda have to stop in and check it out sometime, it's like a little store on the Cape, it's awesome. Loads of parking too, which makes me feel it must get mobbed sometime during the week...end... read more

Tendercrop Farm is a year-round farmstand (building) that sells locally produced items, mostly from their own farm. The food is a little pricier than a regular grocery store, but that is to be expected. They have a great selection of veggies and fruits, plus breads and bakery items, meats, lunch items, and miscellaneous goodies. And, there are always free samples of their delicious dips, and sometimes even free samples of meats. The building is very nice. It has two floors, with the top floor selling home items like wreaths, and scented candles. There is an outside greenhouse portion too which is always stocked with seasonal plants. My boyfriend and I always buy our Halloween pumpkins here because the quality is great, and the price is always reasonable. Recently, I bought several mint plants and they're holding up very well. My favorite section is the soup section. Yummy homemade soups! And their sizes are huge for great prices! I especially loved the corned beef soup. Get there before 5 though or you will miss out. I also think they stop serving soups once the warmer weather hits. If they're out of soup, try one of their wraps. I especially love to buy the chicken one because the label indicates it's made from their own chickens (and you can see a chicken coop on the outskirts of the parking lot) so I wonder if I'm eating a chicken I just admired a few weeks ago! The store does get crowded, especially prime shopping hours like Saturday and Sunday mornings. The lines can feel like they're going super slow, and that's a drawback. Parking is always ample since the lot is huge. Best of all would be the animals in the fenced in field right next to the parking lot. You can buy bread for 25 cents and feed the llamas and Buffy, the Buffalo. Really fun experience for kids! All in all, Tendercrop Farm is a great local produce farmstand that anyone in the Newburyport area should check out. I love it there, and you will love the food! read more

My husband and I are "those" city folk who drive their Zipcar up north and visit Tendercrop for quality food that is priced similarly to that in the city. We always get a few chicken breasts in a great marinade (the lemon one is a favorite, but we like the Greek and Italian spice blends, and I think we've had a solid teriyaki as well). The vegetables are great, and they always have signs up saying what is from their farm and what isn't. The baked goods are delicious, certainly worth the calories. This time around, we were thrilled when they had fiddleheads. So tasty, yet around for such a short time. I think we have enough for 2+ dinners. I also tried a sample of the chicken and beef pie and holy moly - THAT would make an incredible meal. They also have a nice assortment of seasonal plants and flowers, and if you have kids there are chickens, cows, etc. for them to pet and look at. read more

Tendercrop is wonderful. Sure, there are things about it that may not be perfect, like the '$6 dollar repackaged corn tortilla chips' but they do sell things that aren't made by them that are absolutely wonderful, so don't always stick to the things that only say 'our own' because Justin's nut butters are amazing, and many of the cheeses and sauces they sell come from other places as well, but are amazing. That being said, the things that do say 'our own' are all generally very good. I primarily buy meats here, because I know they're high quality, high flavor, and the animals are cared for while they're being raised. They also are more predictable as they butcher meat year round, and generally have a lot of it. Vegetables, while great most of the time, can sell out by the time I get there, and I get out of work well before the average person. This phenomenon is particular to greens and short season vegetables, where as roots, bulbs, and fruit are generally well stocked. This place is also great for high quality flower bouquets, herb bouquets, and seasonal festive decorations. It's also nice that they have a small area where you can see the animals up close and sometimes pet them. My wife used to raise goats so she always likes to stop in and say hi to the animals. The one star off is because it is a bit pricey (although understandably so), the fact that I often don't plan meals before going to tendercrop because I can't count on a particular type of veggie being available. It can also be ridiculously crowded and confusing on the really busy days and they can lack organization during those times. Really, I highly recommend this store, and I would give it a 4.5 if I could. read more

Tender Crop is a nice little farm stand. Their own produce and meats are really delicious and resonably priced for the quality. With that said, I will caution against assuming that everything they sell is their own, even if it is made to look that way. One example is the bag of yellow corn tortilla chips they sell for about $6 bucks. Now if those were hand made, I could see that it might be worth it. But one taste and you will quickly see that these are the same yellow corn chips that sandwich shops and bad mexican places give away and that Tender Crop has just repackaged them. If it doesn't say 'Our Own' on the package, I would suggest heading elsewhere as it is the same quality of food you can get at any grocery store. read more

I've been going to Tender Crop Farm for years. How can you beat it? Fresh vegetables, fresh eggs, fresh meats, great dips and spreads, a large selection of amazing soups....and Buffy the Buffalo and Llamas! They also have their own Root Beer, Orange Soda and Cream Soda. How cool is that? Yes, some things are a little pricey but I've always been willing to pay a little extra for great quality and service. Also make sure to check out the upstairs. There are some beautiful dried flower arrangements and it just smells amazing in here. I stop here whenever I go back home to the Newburyport area. I can't help myself.
